Discussion Should the Anthology films have opening crawls?

What do you think?

 

I think they should have their own unique opening, and I'm talking about each film.

 

I think it would be nice. An exception though would be Rogue One, which is actually in itself an Opening Crawl. The Opening Crawl to Episode IV.

 

YES! Opening crawl is one of those things that sets Star Wars apart for me. I know the anthologies are supposed to be a little different, so I'd feel OK if they didn't use it, but I definitely WANT them too

 

I don't think so, no. I think each one should do it's own individual thing, reflective of the content of the film itself, the style of film it's trying to be, etc.

 

Since they're now called "A Star Wars Story", I say every film start with Yoda opening a holocron by a fire.

 

If there has to be an exposition/infodump, I'd like SW to stick with its traditional crawl. I suppose narrative voiceover with historical visual montage can work too, but that's LotR, not SW.

 

Yes definitely, gives them more of a chance for some brief story exposition.

There needs to be something that identifies it as a canonical Star Wars story, particularly after 2020 when the Anthology films become more obscure (I'm guessing). Whether it is an opening crawl, narrative voice-over or something else I don't know. The audience needs to be reminded that this is part of the Star Wars saga.

I do want the Episodes to be distinct in some way. I guess the Episodic title serves that purpose but I noticed that 'Episode 7' is still missing from TFA.

 

Getting an "Amazing Stories" vibe here. The show wasn't restricted to one genre. Some episodes were drama, comedy, animation, thriller, horror. Instead of TV episodes, it will be entire movies with bigger budgets, but Star Wars related.

 

Even the video games have opening crawls. The spinoffs should too!

 

I'd like to see opening crawls for all the films, Anthology (or Stories or whatever they are calling them now!) included.

I know its a tradition, but really, normal people don't read them.

They could write "The Empire yadda yadda yadda yadda." and the audience wouldn't even notice.

 

I agree with this. As a fan it is bothersome for me to read it as well. I'm hoping with TFA and the rest of the saga films that it is there, just in a concise format. The spin offs don't really need them or should necessarily have them since their purpose is to deepen our understanding of other events we have been told of.

Yes please. The crawl is, for me, part of what sets Star Wars apart from other movies, and enriches the mythology.
With that being said, there should be some difference to the opening of Anthologies/StarWarsStories to differentiate from the saga episodes.

 

EPISODE VII
Following the debacle at Endor the Empire left leaderless
Continued to hang onto their remaining systems
At great cost to the inhabitants
Finally admitting they couldn't continue they sued for peace
Exchanging the reforming of the Senate and a new Republic
in return for clemency and control of certain systems
Provided they released any remaining prisoners
Unfortunately not everyone agreed with this
Thus was founded the First Order...
Fortunately for the Republic Queen Leia Organa of New Alderaan
Fully expected betrayal establishing the Resistance
In preparation for the day another would be Emperor rose to power...

I don't really think that they NEED to have them (although I certainly wouldn't complain if they did). I'd be perfectly fine with those just being the "main saga" films.

 

Definitely. Regardless if it isn't a main episode of the saga, most SW stories open with an opening crawl, even the new novels (well, the book-form of a crawl). But even the games like SWTOR and TFU have a crawl. It's meant to just give you a hint of what to expect.

 

I say no.

Let the crawl be a signature for the episodic films, and let the anthology filmmakers have the liberty to do what they think works best creatively for the opening each film. I kind of like how the Bond franchise has done little variations on the gunbarrel sequence opening for the last couple films (particularly QUANTUM OF SOLACE and SKYFALL). I'd like to see something similar for the anthologies.

Plus, an opening crawl for the Han Solo movie would be somewhat self-indulgent. The grandeur of it wouldn't really fit with the story they're trying to tell.

 

The crawl should stay with the main saga movies. Come up with something original for these movies. Though I have no problem if a lot of them in the OT era want to start the first shot with a Star Destroyer.
