    So, happy graduation/merry Christmas to me.

    The parentals, being so vastly proud of their educated son, first of their three children to recieve his college degree, have said they're going to get me a computer as a graduation present.
    And by this, they mean they'll pay for the parts which I'll be ordering before long. Finally, I'm able to build a computer strictly for editing and other various video projects.

    I've found everything on Newegg, and the system totals in at around $800, though I'm on the lookout for a new monitor also.
    [image=http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/ProductImageCompressAll200/11-119-129-16.jpg]

    This'll be fun. I'm going with an Intel Dual-Core processor, 2.66ghz, a new 500gb HD (along with my current 250 and 40gb drives), GeForce 8600GT video card, 2 gb RAM, a TV tuner card... fun stuff like that.
    I'm looking forward to it.

    Sweet vapes, beets the crap out of my CURRENT setup, though I got some sweet stuff to help it today

    Computer 1:
    Dell Dimension 8200
    2.40 Intel Pentium 4 Processor
    70 GB HD (30 GB free)
    512 MBs of ram
    4 USB 1.1 slots:_| (2 rear, to front)
    Windows XP

    Programs on it I use for video/photowork:
    Photoshop Elements 5
    Photoshop Elements 4
    Corel Painter Essentials 3
    Premiere Elements 2
    Imageready CS2
    Blender 2.43/2.45

    Not to mention the sweet llyama Vision Master 502 21" Monitor with the 5 composite cables (Red, Green, Blue, Horizontal Sync, and Vertical Sync)
    Yes, it is CRT, but I did get it for free and it works fine

    Now I have my sisters laptop. I can use it pretty much whenever, since she rarely uses it. Vista runs like crap (disclamer:eek:n this particular laptop) , so I installed ubuntu on a second partition:

    Gateway® ML3109 Notebook
    General:
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 5207 (1.60GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 533MHz FSB)
    14.1" Widescreen Ultrabright? WXGA TFT (1280x800)
    80GB 4200 RPM PATA hard drive
    3 USB 2.0 ports
    VGA connector
    Connected to 17" I beleive LCD screen

    Today for christmas I got a 320 GB mybook home edition, and a Wacom Tablet Bamboo, they are sweet. Sometime this week I plan to go to best buy to
    1: Exchange the wireless apple keyboard my mom got me for a wired one (my mom didnt know to get wired untill after she got it, I run windows for now)
    2:Get a firewire or usb 2.0 pci slot

    Here is the thing I need help with. My desktop has like 2 or 3 free PCI slots availible. What I am wondering is:
    How do I know if they are PCI or PCI express
    If I get a firewire card this week, I thus have it on there till I get a camera, and can use it for a mybook connection
    If I get a USB port this week I can use it for the mybook connection and transferring music and video faster to my ipod

    Should I get one, which one, or both.

    Bruce

    My father bought my mother a 22in LG monitor for Christmas.....lol. I've been waiting to buy a nice large 24incher and here she gets this thing. She barely knows how to use a computer let alone how to take advantage of the big screen she has now.

    btw, Merry Christmas folks!

    Ain't it always the way.

    I can't wait to show off pics of my new setup when I get it. 2-3 days, and all the parts should arrive. Sithjeff said I should document the process, so if I'm not too ecstatic and take my time assembling it, I just might.

    No promises. Let me know if you guys see any good deals on 22" wide LCDs, btw.

    I never got around to posting pictures of the completed computer I finished building almost a year ago (though I did post some progress pics). Taken with the camera on my new cell phone as my regular digital camera didn't want to work. Things are a bit dusty; I need some canned air...

    [image=http://pressenter.phispace.net/Photos/08-14-08_0231.jpg]

    Wide shot. The Xbox 360 on the left is connected to the monitor via HDMI, so a simple button press and I can swap between computer and console. On the shelf below the *gasp* VCR is an original Xbox that used to be hooked up to the stereo, also on the left, and the television that, until a few weeks ago, had gone unused for about half a year.

    [image=http://pressenter.phispace.net/Photos/08-14-08_0228.jpg]

    A bit closer. The subwoofer is at my feet as I sit there; I have 5.1 speakers that are at the four corners of the room (though the computer isn't centered, I've done some tweaking to help offset this).

    [image=http://pressenter.phispace.net/Photos/08-14-08_0229.jpg]

    The case! That which is the only part that has previously had pictures on here, I believe. In addition to the Black Mesa parking permit, I've added an Aperture Science one. The plugs in front are coming from the 360; I have awesome audio as well as video from the console. That's also why I don't close the front case door, which is fine, as it makes a nice headphone hangar.

    [image=http://pressenter.phispace.net/Photos/08-14-08_0230.jpg]

    It's hard to tell which gets more attention at LANs: the case or the monitor. 24". Did Composite video from the Xbox while at school, before I got the 360. Has a firmware issue where HDMI overscans by 5%, but I live with it. The stand is nice and peculiar and makes a perfect alcove for the keyboard to rest in. Not pictured is the wired remote for my speakers just to the left (desktop configuration, minus junk, left to right: speaker volume [and other] remote, keyboard, mouse). Pictured is the wireless remote for the sound card box on the case, good for watching DVDs and such.

    So, yeah. That's Jasmine. About time I got some pics up!

    Okay, might be time to post mine aswell, after all this time.

    So, as some here know, I did the whole mac-migration about 6 months ago, upgrading to a Power Mac G4 MDD running Leopard 10.5.4. Me and my family and also moved to a bigger place about a month ago, giving me proper place for my setup. And so I present;

    [image=http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll151/vidina2/IMG_0055.jpg]
    Showcasing my entire suite, with a Samsung 22" Widescreen monitor, and a 20" Widescreen Apple Cinema Display (Both running at 1680x1050). The tablet nearly showing under the cinema display is a "TRUST" somethingcrappynotworkinginosxatall thing, so I choose to not properly display it, nor use it. The speaker thing infront of the monitors is a Logitech EasyCall, that controls skype, and contains a microphone. Works like a charm for recording those tutorials. The blue lamp doesn't work anymore, it's just not in my imminent line of sight, so I keep on forgetting to throw it away. Also notice the collectors mug from the comic "Ponds"(it's norwegian, so you're forgiven if you don't know of it)

    [image=http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll151/vidina2/IMG_0057.jpg]
    I know it's a bit weird, but my primary monitor is the Samsung, because size DOES matter. A quick grab from it, bragging of my CS3 Design Premium and AE software, as well as Cinema 4D, screenflow, and the obligatory GarageBand, which is part of iLife '08.

    [image=http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll151/vidina2/IMG_0058.jpg]
    Yeah, that's right. I'm not a part of that whole "right-clicker" community. I use my Apple Pro mouse and keyboard with passion and.... well, I just like em. Also note the über-pro mousepad.

    [image=http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll151/vidina2/IMG_0061.jpg]
    A proper close-up of the good old G4 MDD Case. The model is a late 2002 Power Mac G4 Mirrored Door Drives. at the time, the most expensive in Apple's line of products. When I got it, it was stacked with OS 9.2, which is the by far funniest OS I've ever had the privilege of using. I mean, there was a sound for every single thing you clicked, highlighted or scrolled. IMO, that's cool! :p Anyway, moving on.

    [image=http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll151/vidina2/IMG_0062.jpg]
    Front-view of the case, subwoofer, and shelf with some stuff.

    [image=http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll151/vidina2/IMG_0063.jpg]
    Close up of the shelf, with both OS X 10.5 Leopard and the iPhone 3G box.

    [image=http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll151/vidina2/IMG_0064.jpg]
    Almost done now, this is the printer I got. It's not top of the line, obviously, but the results of the print are damn near perfect, as long as the dpi in Illustrator/PS is set to 150/300. Anyways, notice the little red car? here it is in close-up.

    [image=http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll151/vidina2/IMG_0065.jpg]
    Yeah, that's right, it's a USB mouse ;)

    Two notes: awesome mouse, and move that subwoofer. That close to your case, especially where the hard drives are, could be bad. This is at least the second, perhaps third warning in this thread about this kind of thing :p

    A little update to mine:
    [image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v511/Vaportrail1519/P2110323.jpg]

    Got a 23" Samsung LCD just today, and managed to keep using my BenQ 19" monitor as well. I'm currently typing here on the left while watching a movie on the right. I love it.
    This screen's bigger than my TV downstairs, depressingly enough. At least, it is for watching anything widescreen.
    I've run out of desk space (plus the cords are short), so the speakers are just behind the screen on either side. I can hear them well enough. There's a headphone jack on the top of the tower if I really need it.

    When I'm done playing around, I'll be setting up Vegas and After Effects soon. How I missed having a whole screen dedicated to just the footage.

    Heh, yeah. When I wasn't doing anything else I was watching it on the 16:9, but keeping it there while using the internet on the right just felt weird.
    Sadly, this is the biggest screen I've ever watched Sky Captain on.

    I tried it with Vegas too, having the preview on the left and the timeline on the right, but it just feels like I'm wasting a lot of space. If I want to preview at full res, I'll just drag the window to the left real quick, then move it back after.

    God bless the flat panel. These things conquer my desk right now, I have maybe a foot of free space to the right. I'm actually glad I didn't go for a bigger size, because this monitor just barely fits underneath the shelf above it. If I'd gone to even 24", I would have to keep it out closer to me.

    Got some footage capturing, so I figured I'd goof off a little and show you my work computers.

    [image=http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg317/mrcomyn/IMG_0105.jpg]
    Here's the whole setup. Although we edit and finish primarily in DV Anamorphic, we're still able to accommodate the occasional HD project.

    [image=http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg317/mrcomyn/IMG_0106.jpg]
    Details of the Mac side of the workspace, with the two 24" monitors.

    [image=http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg317/mrcomyn/IMG_0108.jpg]
    My two Drobos. The one of the left is the newer one, hooked up with FireWire800. The other is our archive drive, a first-generation USB2.0 slug. My boss bought it just weeks before they unveiled the second-generation drobo.

    [image=http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg317/mrcomyn/IMG_0109.jpg]
    My beautiful MacPro. It's not at it's full potential, with only 5GB of RAM and a 256GB Vidina card, but it works well for our purposes. It's the quad core version, with two 2.8GHz Intel Core2Duo's.

    [image=http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg317/mrcomyn/IMG_0107.jpg]
    And then the PC side. Of course, I have to have a PC for all the little things. I've got a Dell Latitude 610 hooked up to a dock with an extra widescreen LCD.

    A few additions/updates....

    With our new film 'Alienated', starring Vincent Pastore from The Sopranos, we shot on the Red and wanted to edit in 2K (ProRes HQ), so I decided to incorporate a Blackmagic Multibridge Pro for both monitoring and mastering through SDI. Editing off a CalDigit HDOne 8TB array http://www.caldigit.com/HDOne/ ....and through its controller card 2K is a breeze.
