Sidious said only one cheated death. Was he talking about his former master?

I've thought about that, too. It would be even more psychotic if, as sort of an experiment, he first nearly killed and then saved him, to find out if the trick actually works.

Since the first time I heard that I had assumed he was talking about Qui Gonn. We know Qui Gonn was the first to do it and he was communicating with Yoda at the time. You have to figure the Emperor was probably spying on Yoda through the force and was aware of there communication. Now if I recall he told Anakan that the two of them would figure out how to do it together. He could have just BS?d him and told him he wasn?t ready to learn it and stuff. But he knew Qui Gonn had achieved it and needed Anakan?s help to figure out how he had done it.

With all respect to GIG and the evolution of Script simplification,
I would like to add the following from the fourth draft of the ROTS Script:

    (Opera Scene)

PALPATINE: It's ironic he could save others from from death, but not himself.
According to the legend, it was a power his apprentice found no value in.
So the ability to save loved ones was lost with Plagueis "the wise."

It seems obvious to me why these lines were edited.
They would be of no use to Palpatine in the seduction of Anakin.
But were thoughts of Lucas' as the script evolved.

Also, as I mentioned on p.2

I think that there is a significant difference in Palps mind between:
    "save from dying" and
    "cheating death" [face_thinking]
