How is this one compared to Sim City 3000?

I picked up Sim City 4 yesterday... looks very cool, but very hard.

In the intro to the game, there is something that looks like a nuclear explosion... yet that is not one of the disasters... how do you get it?

Hey, anybody know how to get the game to play your own music instead of listening to the game soundtrack over and over and over?

I sorta agree this game is very hard to start off, but as you have time & patience you should be able to find out how to do what.

You can go out to buy THAT strategy guide if you want, but I think it's a waste of money. I think it sucks, without given color pages.

See if a second & better one will come out soon.

I'll just keep my eyes open on Official website & fan sites. In time, sites will grow just like the city you are building.

A lot of answers are in the game configuation, as well as the game manual, sub-screens.

Download the game crack from GameCopyWorld.com so you don't need the CD. Install said crack. Start your favorite mp3/cd playing software with music cd in CD drive. Start the game.

Note, this is a half joke. While it would work (should work) just fine, I don't expect a lot of people to do this.

Hurray! The game's coming in the mail later today.

I found this on a message board so it may not work, but this is how you get your own MP3s to play. Just put your music or a winamp playlist (.m3u) into the Radio\Stations\Mayor\Music folder and they should play like the rest of the music. Since this sounds a lot like how to use custom music in the Sims I'm guessing that if there's any music that you don't want to listen to, including music that came with the game, just remove it from that folder.

I might have to look into this one a little bit more before I decide to get it.

    Custom Music

By placing your own music files (MP3's) in the proper directory, you can have custom tunes play while you enjoy the game. The first step is to place the music files in one of two directories. For music to be played while in region mode place your custom tunes here:

    C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4\Radio\Stations\Region\Music

And for music to be played while editing your cities:

    C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4\Radio\Stations\Mayor\Music

Once your music is in place, start the game up and go into the sound options. In sound options is a check box called Custom Tunes. Checking that box will enable the playback of the music files you placed in the two directories.

    Give it a read :)

Apparently, an MSN pop-up appeared to have erased my city, but when I clicked it from region view, there was still a city there. Sure enough, it was there when I went all the way in. Evil pop ups. Got rid of them now.

Maybe it's not a disaster you control, but one that happens by itself. Maybe if you get a nuclear powerplant, underfund it, or overuse it, i'll meltdown.

I think that's what happens. But I haven't gotten a nuclear power plant yet so I can't be sure.

You mean you can't cheat and cause disasters to happen yourself? I use to love doing that on SimCity. Build up a nice big city and then hit it with an earthquake or a tornado. Or both!

Simcity 3000 came out on the mac not that long after the PC version was releasd- anyone heard any word on a Mac port of Simcity 4 in the works?

Also, I never played SC3K (stopped after SC2K), but I'm curious if the "donut" strategy (making a 3x3 block of residential/commercial/industrial zones, with a park or landmark in the middle, surrounding by a road or rail) still carries over from the original SC game nowadays.

I just got a nuclear power plant, and that atomic explosion does happen. :D

You mean you can't cheat and cause disasters to happen yourself? I use to love doing that on SimCity. Build up a nice big city and then hit it with an earthquake or a tornado. Or both!

You can start disasters manually. The only ones that I can think of that you can't control are a water pipe burst, a nuke plant blowing up (though you can destroy it with a disaster to make it go off), a missle blowing up in the sky, and a riot.

And I'm not totally sure about the doughnut strategy, but this game requires a slightly different strategy from early Sim games, so probably not. Especially since buildings are pickier about how close to roads they are, landmarks cost a huge amount of maintainence, and you need to place other necessities nearby. You can't lump all the schools or hospitals in one area like in previous sims. They act like fire and police stations now with areas that they can influence.

I've started rushing my city by using the money cheat and zoning lots of new areas and rezoning old ones.

I still don't make enough money to stay in the green, though. These people really want their schooling. :p

What I did is just make sure that I funded education well, and took out all but one of my police stations. The people are too smart to commit crimes, so I'm relatively crime free. Also, until recently I ignored health care. Just make sure to always be fine tuning your school and other building's budgets and don't build things until you know that you can handle their maintance.

I have some schools right near houses, but my data displays have the houses near the schools in the red for education. Am I doing something wrong? Education is working fine for some other houses... ?[face_plain]

I, too, need a new pc. I'm using my dad's new low-end pc to play the game. It's not nearly fast enough to keep the game from crashing or freezing.

I have become closely acquainted with the money cheat: weaknesspays

It is the only think keeping my giant map city alive when I'm not trying to unfreeze, reload the game or reboot the computer from a lockup. :p

I heard this game takes up alot of space on your computer. Also do you have to have a brand new computer to run it? Because I really really want this game, but I dont want to buy it and find out it doesn't work.

The computer I have SimCity 4 on doesn't have a space for a video card. I wonder if that is making the RAM work double time and explains the lockups and crashes. [face_plain]

What kind of computer is it? Sounds like it has integrated video so yes, the system memory might be shared with the video memory.
