The pirate accent is a bit much, and he seems overpowered in combat, at least until he gets ionized. But those are minor nitpicks; I like him so far.

I like that the show doesn’t soften the violence much. When SM-33 punches, it hurts!

There also actually some serious sense to SM-33 being a dangerous but seemingly melee-and-defense-focused attack droid.

Pirates wouldn’t want merchandise hurt by stray blaster fire from a combat droid trying to achieve military objectives, would want someone in front of them to absorb fire rather than themselves if at all possible, and expect almost all combat to be short, up-close, and painfully linear.

A rock-em-sock robot with shields would make perfect sense as a vanguard for repetitive but consistent boarding actions.

He definitely seems tougher than he should be... but maybe he’s more armed for the front because that’s supposed to be the side facing the enemy?

And appropriately for a droid apparently built or stolen for a pirate captain, he’s clearly prepared for mutineers at a moment’s notice.

yeah I liked we had a competent droid that could fight, and not just be used for "aww cutsies I want one for Christmas" and/or for laughs.

I want to see him fight and kick ass more for his cap'ain

I like the accent. It seems plausible that some droids could be programmed for or by the people they work with, and even that some droids could adapt their speech over time based on what they usually hear.

SM-33 was great in the fight scene. I also liked that his whole introduction repeatedly featured him really wanting to throw someone out of the airlock (like making someone walk the plank).

He’s at least not saying arrgggh and matey and ahoy. Just has a cockney accent.

I hear more Cockney than pirate as well. With the rasp, he reminds me of The Hitcher from The Mighty Boosh.

I loved SM-33 and loved the transformation from First Mate SM-33 into combat mode. He's all hunched over and old looking, then straightens us, extends his arms, now he'd be eye to eye with a KX droid, at least and punches his way through.

I loved the blaster plates on his arms as well

he also gave Fern the blaster before letting her go to the port, but none of the other kids were given weapons. Cause she's the Captain and needed her sidearm. And she had no idea how to use it, which is fitting for kids their age and the isolated way they grew up.

Could this droid be associated with the Nihil?

With the reference to the "Great works", I think the planet the kids are from was founded during the High Republic era.

I suspect something in SM-33's programming prevents him from revealing anything he knows about At Attin, perhaps because of its status as a secret 'Jewel of the Old Republic' planet. Whenever the planet is mentioned, he repeats "Can't say I remember no At Attin." Then he did the "Searching, searching..." when the kids asked him where he just came from. He obviously knew something about whatever mission the Onyx Cinder was on before it crashed and had to have known the planet was At Attin.

I love the accent. He might be my favorite character on the series so far, but Jod is quickly growing on me.

I mean “can’t say that I don’t remember no At Attin” he says right? He cannot say he doesn’t remember it , hence he remembers it? I also noticed that his answer seems automatic and scripted… he knows and I think he was programmed to not reveal the position of it!

Pardon he says exactly “can’t say I remember no At Attin” so it tracks I cannot say “ I remember no At Attin” because I do remember…

I agree. He knows At Attin, he just can't say it. When this is revealed, that's how the kids will chart a course home. But which member of SM33's old crew did that to him? Did they survive the crash? The ship was suspiciously in a restricted area. Who made it restricted? Could it be someone who wants to hide the crash and not destroy the ship? Maybe the Supervisor has a shady past?

I also think the supervisor was sm33’s captain and he is the one that programmed it not to say he remembers At Attin?
If they ask you have no idea where it is!
It’s a memory override! Not easy to make droids lie… wait who else have we seen doing that? Maybe Fern is the descendant of the original captain eheheh

What are the rules for droids in SW? Issac Asimov does not seem well read in the GFFA. Clearly, droids don't have issue harming humans. Most seem sentient, so are do Star Trek rules apply? The subject of what happens when a droid is required to lie have me thinking of Hal. Look how well that worked out for Dave. SW droids are some of the best characters across all storylines, so how do they get so much personality. It seems far more than just programming, or reprogramming as the case may be.

Sadly Isaac Asimov seems not to be well read IRL too recently... quite dangerous things are being done with robotics and AI!
Do I remeber correctly was it in Clone Wars that it was explained that droids gain their personality by not regularly erasing their memory?
Anakind did not want to erase R2D2 memory even if it was considered dangerous because an enemy could then retrieve navigation data?
There are restraining bolts that take away the droids free will right?
I always feel like the treatment of droids in SW has always been problematic because if the are represented like basically sentient beings with emotions then they are treated like slaves and that does not feel right but it is a long story to approach...

And probably a story no one really wants to hear, or to tell. I am glad they stopped being used as solely comedy relief. As amusing as AP5 and Chopper are, I wouldn't want to go up against them. Whether they make me laugh, cry or just fascinate me, they make the GFFA a more interesting place.
