I hate these things - State dinners are always boring and tedious; if it weren?t for the fact that there are rumors going around about a possible assassination attempt on Admiral Akbar, we would not even had been there tonight: the worst part is that we were required to wear our dress uniforms and I don?t know a single one of my pilots - including myself - who likes to wear these torture suits; at least we were allowed to be armed because of the situation. Looking around the room, I spot my Rogues mingling with the other guests - Wes and I are the only ones who are on duty but do not have ?dates? as he was there as not only my aide-de-camp but ever since Distna, also in his self-appointed role as my personal body guard - and I couldn?t ask for a better one: Tycho, my second in command was with his wife Winter speaking with Princess Leia, Han and Mon Mothma in one corner of the room while Corran and Mirax Horn were with Corran?s wingman Ooryl Qrygg and his mate walking the perimeter of the room in his typical CorSec fashion - a good man to have on a mission like this - checking out the security details of the room. Gavin and Asyr were entertaining a group of Bothan dignitaries with Hobbie and Hallis Saper - yes, everyone was present and accounted for just waiting for the signal for the dinner to be served.

People were beginning to take their seats - Wes and I were seated at the head table next to General Airen Cracken who was sitting just to the left of Admiral Ackbar - Mon Mothma was on his right and next to her were Leia and Han. I took one last look around for the Rogues to make sure they were spread throughout the room and watched them take their places. The appetizer, soup, salad and entrée courses went without a hitch - that is as long as you like rubber fowl, hard peas and cold rice for dinner - then it was time for the speeches, dessert and caf.

It seemed like hours before Akbar got up to speak and the Rogues became extra alert - the wait staff surreptitiously began to clean the tables and that is when I noticed that some were not the same beings that had been serving all night. I began to turn to Wes to alert him to this fact when I saw a strange movement out of the corner of my eye - one of the waiters had pulled a blaster from under his apron - Wes saw the motion the same time I did and we both flew into action: yelling, I launched myself at the Admiral hitting him just as a shot rang out: I felt a hot burning, tearing sensation in my left shoulder and a pop in my left ribs as I brought Akbar to the floor hitting my head on the table and floor. I heard Wes?s blaster answer in return along with those of some of the Rogues as all hells broke loose, people yelling and screaming - I think I may have been one of them, barking orders even as I tried to make sure the Admiral was unhurt - chaos reigned as the Rogues began moving about to keep order and control in the room - Corran had the would be assassin in binders waiting for the police to arrive.

The next thing I knew, I was lying on the floor in a pool of my own blood; Wes was at my side and the Admiral and I were surrounded by Mon Mothma, Princess Leia, General Cracken and Han Solo - I tried to sit up but my left arm would not support my weight and the room spun every time I lifted my head - I fell back letting my head hit the floor. I heard people saying that Akbar was unharmed and calling for the medics - I wondered who was hurt and in need of medical attention.

I woke up three days later in the Darklighter Memorial Medical Center hooked up to an IV machine with tubes and wires leading to another machine and Wes at my side; the Rogues were scattered about the room talking quietly amongst themselves. ?Hey everyone, he?s starting to wake up,? I heard Wes say to the group then he whispered to me, ?How are you feeling, buddy??

I began to try to sit up but Wes pushed me gently back down onto the bed, ?The doctors say you aren?t to be sitting up yet, Wedge. You suffered a sever concussion along with some other injuries, but I can raise the head of the bed a bit if that will make you more comfortable.?

I tried to answer Wes but all that came out was a squeaky ?Sure,? so I nodded my head - was that a big mistake; the world started to swim out of focus and my head began to ache. The Rogues began to gather around the bed and I heard several ?How ya doing, boss?? ?Coruscant Control to Rogue One - next time duck,? and again I managed a squeaky and raspy, ?Ok, I think.? I tried to grin, ?Wes? What happened??

?You don?t remember??

?No, should I??

Wes recounted, in graphic detail, the events of three nights before, ?. . . then you passed out from lack of blood just before the medics got to you. The doctors say you?re going to be fine with a nice long rest and plenty of recuperation - along with the shot to the shoulder, you also broke and dislocated it - and it got torn up pretty badly, too - you also have some broken ribs but those have healed a lot with the bacta you?ve received and the bacta bandages and of course there is the concussion - it?s a good thing you Corellians have hard heads or the head injury would have been a lot worse they say. They dunked you in bacta long enough to stop the bleeding and start the recovery process but they said that they want you to heal the old fashioned way and Ackbar wants - well actually he orders you to take a six month leave - as a way of saying thank you for saving his life and to heal. . .?

Before he could continue, the doctor, followed by several interns and a nurse walked into the room. ?That?s it, everybody needs to leave, now,? the nurse exclaimed, ?The general needs rest, not all this excitement. Out!?

Tycho began to usher the group out, ?I?ll see you later, Wedge,? he said as the last of the Rogues, except for Wes, left the room.

?You, too, out!?

?No, ma?am, I?m the General?s body guard - he stays, I stay,? Wes replied resolutely crossing his arms over his chest.

The nurse looked at the doctor pleadingly, ?He can stay, nurse, just go about your duties.?

Wes gave her one of his most infectious smiles and sat down in the chair on the far side of the room out of everyone?s way: a short time later they broke the news to me that I was to have to have surgery the next day to help repair torn muscles, tendons and ligaments in my left shoulder.

Gavin and Asyr were entertaining a group of Bothan dignitaries with Hobbie and Hallis Saper - yes, everyone was present and accounted for just waiting for the signal for the dinner to be served.
You know, I never thought of Hobbie/Hallis, but now that I?ve read this, my mind has started thinking about them and how good they?d be together.

I heard people saying that Akbar was unharmed and calling for the medics - I wondered who was hurt and in need of medical attention
You know, it?s scary that Wedge is hurt and at the same time, that just seems exactly like how he?d react.

I?ve been told that the surgery was successful - had another round of dunking in bacta as well - and that I now have about fourteen anchors holding my left shoulder together, permanently, and that I will be in for a long hard road of recuperation and rehab on it.

Since the surgery and the bacta treatment, I have been in and out of it from the anesthesia and with the pain killers but every time I wake up Wes is still sitting in that same chair alert like a jungle cat or next to my bed talking softly to me - telling me that I have eat and get well. Sometimes Tycho and Hobbie have been here as well and Tych tells me that the hospital has set up a bed behind the curtain for Wes in my room so that he can get some descent rest while I sleep and one or more of the other Rogues are there - my room is normally a private room, fortunately it is big enough to allow for this.

You know, it never really clicked for me until I read this story, but now I know exactly what Wes is: He's a puppy. A big, goofy, endlessly loyal puppy.

Oh yeah, and "Darklighter Memorial Medical Center": Nice touch.

Well, the docs have been in already this morning and they are going to spring me into Wes?s tender mercies in a couple of days - I can?t wait to get out of here - as long as I begin to eat; with all the medications, I just haven?t been hungry, I just pick at my food which I?m told is not good. I have also just been informed that when it comes time to begin rehab on my shoulder, Wes will be the one working on it with me - I?ll be in good hands - they have been showing him the exercises and things that I will need to do to bring my shoulder back.

I struggled to sit more upright in bed, ?So, Wes, once I?m out of here what do you say to you, me, Tycho and Hobbie taking a few days and heading out to Lando?s Adventure Resort??

?And just what are you going to be able to do there, boss, in your condition? You can?t ride the thrill rides and those are the only fun ones.?

I pouted and if my left arm weren?t strapped to me and in a sling, I would have crossed my arms over my chest in defiance, ?There?s plenty I would be able to do and you guys can do the stuff I can?t together without me - I won?t mind, I?m sure I could keep busy.?

?Ah, Wedge, correct me if I?m wrong, but didn?t Ackbar, AND the doctors, say that you are to have complete rest in order to heal and come back 100 percent? My understanding of Ackbar?s standing orders for you do not include any trips in the near future to an amusement park - we can go once you?re better; besides, I already have it planned out where we are going for the next three to six months it is going to take for that shoulder to heal completely.?

?Oh??

?Yep, but it is a surprise and now it is time for you to get out of bed and do some walking and maybe sit up in the chair for awhile - the docs want you up and mobile before you can go home.?

With Wes?s help, I managed to sit up on the edge of the bed, ?Do I really have to do this? With this damn hospital gown on, my backside sticks out.? I didn?t tell him that sitting up made my woozy and a bit nauseous.

?Don?t worry about your cute little backside - we took care of that and I brought you some sweats from your quarters to wear. I?ll help you get them on and then you can walk around the room and down the corridors - the doc wants you to get a lot of walking in.?

Several minutes later, I was wearing a pair of my black sweat pants and with the help of my nurse, Wes had gotten me into a sweatshirt as well - needless to say I was much more comfortable and felt more human than I did in the hospital gown. I had a pair of flip-flops on my feet as they insisted that I could not wander around in my bare feet. I stood up, the room swam before my eyes so I closed them until it stopped, ?Ok, I think I?m ready to take that walk, Wes.?

Wes just grinned at me and handed me my IV pole that I was still hooked up too and we headed for the door. We walked up and down the halls several times before returning to my room - Wes helped be back into bed and helped me get comfortable again. My nurse was waiting there for me when we returned. ?Now that I am up and around, when can I take a shower??

I got to take my first shower today since I have been in the hospital and it beat to all hells the bed baths the nurses have insisted on giving me; they are embarrassing - it is not easy doing it with only one arm and I had to have help especially washing my hair and drying off but at least I feel human and the hot water made most of my aches and pains diminish somewhat. They have left the IV in my arm but disconnected me from the machine and have taken all the wires and leads off now that I am up and about. Wes and I roam the halls at least three times a day and sometimes Tycho and Hobbie will come with us if they are there visiting - they are being kept pretty busy running the squadron in my absence but today is Tycho?s day to relieve Wes for a few hours so that he can get some sleep. He was sitting in Wes?s chair by the door when I came out of the ?fresher.

?Tycho, have you found out who was behind the assassination attempt, yet?? I asked as I climbed on to my bed and attempted to get comfortable - not an easy task when you can?t use one arm and shoulder.

?They are still investigating it, Wedge, but so far signs have pointed to a enclave of Imperial resisters based on Coruscant - the guy Wes shot, he?s the one that got you, is going to survive but he is not talking although NRI has rounded up about a dozen of them at the hotel after the shooting. Corran was responsible for helping with that - turns out several of the waiters were involved in the attempt of Ackbar?s life. Let?s change the subject; I am really not suppose to be telling you these things - Ackbar?s orders, you are suppose to be concentrating on getting well not on the assassination attempt. So, boss, how are you feeling today??

?Tych, you know I want to be kept informed even if there is nothing I can do from this hospital bed - it concerns me, as well.? I looked at my chrono, ?Wes should be up soon and then it will be time for our daily walk - the docs are letting me go outside for the first time today and you know Wes. . . ?

?Yep, he will be armed to the teeth like a Wookiee and twice as deadly,? Tycho grinned.

?I heard that,? came Wes?s voice from behind the curtain, ?And you?re damned right - as Wedge?s bodyguard it?s my duty to protect him at all costs and at all times.? Wes came from around the curtain with a towel draped around his neck and his shaving kit in his hand, ?My turn in the ?fresher, guys - has your nurse been in yet this morning??

?No, not yet, but he should be here soon - it?s just about time for my meds and for breakfast so hurry it up.?

Tych continued to fill me in on the goings on in the squadron and by the time Wes got out of the ?fresher, my nurse had been in and breakfast brought; I tried to give mine to Tycho but he wouldn?t take it - said I had to eat it even if I wasn?t hungry or he would report me to Ackbar - the womprat.

Tycho took his leave of us once we were outside in the courtyard saying that Gavin would be by later today to relieve Wes overnight so that he can sleep - the poor guy has not been sleeping too much trying to hard to watch over me so Tych and I devised a plan where one of the Rogues would come by at night and keep guard so that Wes can get some rest - he protests of course but he is no good to me as either bodyguard or aide if he is tired.

Wes must be feeling quite a bit of guilt over Wedge's injury.
For shame on those who shot Wedge! I hope they turn him over to Wes.
