I'm British and very much a civvy so don't really know too much about the difference (I know it's allegedly large) but yeah, I get the impression we're still dealing with a 16/17 year old who believe that military service is the way out of any trouble he has rather than the probable start of a whole new world of pain (both literal and psychological)

USAF basic training in '89 wasn't much different from Full Metal Jacket, obviously without the Hollywood drama.

 

FMJ was sanitized, so it doesn’t surprise me that it was the chair force recruit training experience.

 

Yeah, but he still even now strikes me as someone in his late teens with so much misguided promise.

With a mask. Because of covid lots of new restrictions. First two weeks (or month) is now quarantine. Masks are required throughout entire experience. No more learning combative, family day, or people visiting for graduation for the next few years. Plus other things as well. But the "shark attack" happens once red phase hits.
And I don't have a problem wearing a mask. I had to order some for whenever I go in. I've been keeping track with news of everything going on.

And I know i haven't posted in the fitness thread on awhile, but I have been working on diet and exercise. Almost everyday I'm doing something. Now I have to cut back even more than I have. I have people helping me with this. Its been a long journey.

 

Hello. Basically last post about this I guess. I was up at 3 am with only 2 1/2 hours of sleep. I had to go get the physical at meps. That was the last stepping stone to pass and I was so nervous and seriously thought I'd fail. Had to do the duck walk and other exercises. A long, tedious, awkward, painstaking, nerve-wracking day.

But, I passed. I'm now enlisted. I'm in the army. I have to say I was super shocked honestly. Despite having a sense I would get in I didn't believe it. I kept doubting myself. But I made it. Cried later because I just actually made it.

My ship date is September 9th. I'm going to Fort Jackson. Ill be a 88 Mike, which is a motor operation specialist. Basically I'll be transporting everything. 3 1/2 year contract.

I don't know what my life holds next, but I just wait on the Lord's direction for the next steps. I'm going to continue working out and getting stuff in order.

I kept thinking of this song. How it fits for me in this.


So, I know many of you haven't cared but thats ok. I wanted to share with you all this achievement, an actual achievement in my life. So the next week will be my last for awhile unless I can use my phone at times, which I supposedly can but at certain times.

But thanks for seeing me struggle and get through this time. So thanks. Thank you all.

I hope being forced to intermingle with people from all walks of life from across this country opens your eyes and you come back a better person for it.

 

What’s even worse is seeing your own (progressive leaning) nephew enlist, and now his younger college aged brother (my younger nephew) is signing up for ROTC at school so he can join him after graduating.

(Late reply I know, but I never saw this thread until tonight and still haven’t read past the first page yet.)

 

I know we've never got along especially when we were younger, but I hope you come out of this alright, Arlon.

 

Same here Brandon. I may disagree with some of your decisions, but I truly wish only good things for you. I hope you come out of it ok.

 

I'm so glad that you were able to achieve a goal you wanted. By trusting in yourself and in your faith, you were able to have this achievement. From what I understand from others--many of whom have spoken in this thread--this can be a road with a lot of challenges. I hope you come through them well, and besides growing your skills, you also build confidence that you can keep on achieving.
