I have a few, and I'll post them a little later, but does anyone else here have songs they wrote?

A whole bunch! They're all in midi format (but for some reason the Quicktime plug-in doesn't allow the music to immediately transition into an instrument change...).

Anyway, they can be found on my MIDI website. They're nothing spectacular, but they do have some nice melodies and are a fine example of programmatic music.

This was a poem that became a song a while ago... I pulled out my acoustic guitar and wrote a simple chord progression for it. Anywho... here we are.

    A Simple Dream
Such a beautiful place, such a beautiful time,
Sitting here, wishing you were mine.
The purple clouds overhead against the night sky,
All the geese have laid to rest, past time for them to fly.
The crickets chirping, sweetening the night's air,
My soul longing for someone as sweet as you; as fair.
And as the night fades into my soul, I sigh-
-Because I hope to be with someone as sweet as you before I die.
Because I am afraid of the distance we share,
And I fear that we shall never breathe each other's air.

And when it comes to composed music, I have a song called "My Love" I wrote on MIDI format a while back. It's a short and sweet piano piece.

I've never actually written a song.
OK, sure, when I played the piano I would fool around, but they really weren't "songs."

I have co-written a couple of songs, but only written one on my own. I honestly don't think I have the guts to post that one here, as I have a serious insecurity problem regarding what I write. :p

But your poem is lovely James. :D

here's my favorite that I made up.

It's titled Life as we know it

    From the day we're born
    till the day we die
we all go through something known as life
It hurts you, it helps you
It makes you happy or it makes you sad
It is know everywhere as life

    (Chorus)
    God gives you it
    You use it
What you do with it is your choice
    you can be something
    or you can be nothing
depending on how you use the thing god gave you called Life

Life can also make you mad
and push you to the edge
it makes you do weird things,
it makes you do normal things,
but what you do next only you can decide
Birth, school, a job and marriage are all stops,
on the train of life yeah,

    God gives you it
    You use it
What you do with it is your choice
    you can be something
    or you can be nothing
depending on how you use the thing God gave you called life

And one day, a day decided by God
    You will die
    Whether it be glorius
or weather it just be the end of a long trail
You will one day come to the last station
    on the train of life

    God gives you it
    You use it
What you do with it is your choice
    You can be something
    or you can be nothing
Depending on how you use the thing God gave you called life

    ohhhhh, yeah!
The thing he gave you called life
    you gotta use it
or you can just forget it

    yeah, yeah
    the thing called life

    Life

    Life

    Life

    The thing called Life.

Just wondering: have any of the songwriters in here written like three seperate songs and had no idea how to finish them? Have you ever combined them?

Radiohead's Thom Yorke did that with "Paranoid Android" and John Lennon did it with The Beatles with "Happiness is a Warm Gun." Both were made up of three songs that were combined into one. You can recognize the three seperate elements when you listen to them.

Just an idea if you guys are stuck writing.

great advice Radiohead (and Thom & John)

i always get hung up on lyrics!

also, i think i'm just incredibly picky about what i want my songs to "say"... i want the words to parallel/compliment the music...

i've got a lot of single lines without a home - maybe i'll try combining them to make a collage song :)

    Thanks, Kerr_Plunk!

Also, sometimes gibberish and made-up words can be fun, too. Word play has been a staple in song writing for as long as I can remember. So, lyricists shouldn't be limited in that sense.

I just wrote this for someone special... she knows who she is.

    "Me and You"
If I could hold you close,
    I'd be with you,
    -- next to you.
And if I could touch your hand,
    I'd kiss it gently,
    -- and let you see...
That you're the nebulous gem in my universe.
And if I could touch your lips,
    I'd kiss them again,
    -- and let you win..
My soft and gentle heart ~
And hold you next to me,
-- gaze into your eyes, sparkling.
I'd hold you close to me,
    My love you'd see.

And if I could hold you close,
    I'd caress your face,
-- and enjoy your lip's sweet taste.
But since I can't hold you close,
Just hearing your voice will do,
    -- just me and you.

    And... errr... that's a wrap.

This is the last song of mine that ended up on an album. it's called Fight. uber-emo-core.

I don't want to lose you
Any more than you want to,
But when it comes down to you
I just don't know what to do.
I don't want to dwell on the fight
    We had the other night.
I just want to do what I can do
    To make it right.

    Don't you understand
That I'm trying to be your man?
    I just don't think I can.

I wish I had all the answers
    To all of life's mysteries,
But even if I did I'd bet
We'd still have fights like these.
I just can't sit back and let
This whole thing go to waste,
    But everything I try
Just blows up right back in my face.

    Don't you understand
That I'm trying to be your man?
    I just don't think I can.

I have currently one quite challenging project going on (and it's probably just too challenging right now). As some of you may have noticed I like long and complex pieces of music, like Jethro Tull's Thick as a brick or Yes' Tales From Topographic Oceans. So I decided to do my own long complex piece of music. I've written most of the lyrics but then I decided I should translate them into english and that proved somewhat difficult since I just can't express all the same things in english that I can in finnish. So that's one problem and the second one is that I'm not very good songwriter yet. And it really isn't easy to write seven different parts of this whole concept and link them together and make it work. And since I have only one acoustic guitar I can't work out some instrumental parts. But I'm in no hurry so maybe I get this work finished someday.

I've written a LOT of songs, and most of them suck too bad to put up here, but all my writing is always a learning process.. :p

I've done complete instrumentals, and complete a capellas, but I do have some fav. just guitar and voice songs-

    here's an old one:

    Explor: (spelling intentional)

I have seen the many lands
    and spoke the many tongues.
    But nothing meets my needs.
    What do I do next?

    Verse 1
You think you?re near the end
    Yet you haven?t even started
    For every thing you?ve seen
out there there?s a billion more.

    Chorus
    Get out and Explor
don?t try to find and it will come
The more you want it the closer it gets
    Get up and find more,
it doesn?t just happen to some,
upon your own cliff, it sets.

    Verse 2
    Pushing through the fog,
    you see the bright light.
But to keep it inside you,
you?ll have to let it out.

    Try something new,
    have it above and beyond,
    but for everything you find,
make it yours, and keep it pure.

    (chorus)

    Bridge
It doesn?t have to be huge, Just something new,
Not something unseen, but something that touches you
you don?t have to see it, but experience it
It?s not what it doesn?t have to be, it?s what it is.

    Push through the luscious green,
    find the dew dropped valleys.
    And every sunbeam shining
    will refresh your soul.

    Verse 3
See it like your first time, cherish it forever,
but don?t forget the things you?ve seen
as you set out to find all the wonders.

    (chorus)

    Get out and Explor
don?t try to find and it will come
The more you want it the closer it gets
    Get up and find more,
it doesn?t just happen to some,
upon your own cliff, it sets.
And the prize will wait until you claim it as your own.

    1. Ex?plor (eks-plór)- v.t. to find all the things never found, and live life to the fullest because of it.

Heh, I wrote a lot of songs when my friends and I had "a band". Am I going to post them? ;) Umm, probably not. I wrote them when I was like, 12 or so, and it's embarrassing.. Oh, but one had a tongue-twister of a chorus

    Unbelievable
Unconceivable (Inconceivable, I know, I know.. but they all had to have 'un')
    My dream's memories are
    Unretreivable
    Irrepressable
    Some-other-long-unpronouncable-word-goes-here
My dreams will never die, yeah, my dreams will never die..

Hmm...I didn't realize that everyone was talking about songs with lyrics. :) ... I actually have yet to write a song with lyrics, except for a 'national anthem' designed for a fantasy story I wrote. It was kinda corny though ;)

But I think I may consider using lyrics more in the future. I have a CD of all songs sung in French, and I tend to find that those songs sound so much more beautiful than most songs in English...but, that's just an opinion.

Still, if anyone's interested in hearing songs sans lyrics, then just check my MIDI website.

Ummagumma, The Greatest Probe Droid Ever Activated, brings you this song from a band called
    Commissioner Gourdon

    Shadows

breathing in these different places still all seem the same
sometimes see familiar faces never given names
seems no matter where i go New Jersey to Peru
everyone i meet's a shadow of the former you

the alcohol is working me the buzz is going strong
the faces in the willow tree are singing me a song
other ones who've lost you, don't know how they're getting through
when everything i see's a shadow of the former you

i can still remember clearly the day you broke my heart
i never thought the ending would be so close to the start
the sun shone like a fireball the sky was perfect blue
i looked down and i saw a shadow of the former you

...sit somewhere pretending that it's not really the ending of the dream
feeling very lowly like i might be dying slowly inbetween...

someone who reminds me of you looks over my way
and maybe her companionship could brighten up my day
still i know the way i feel it never could be true
she'd always only be a shadow of the former you.
