CNN is reporting about a Spaceballs cartoon to air on G4 next year!

    'Spaceballs' to become TV cartoon

This is fantastic news! Mel Brooks will be playing two characters, although it doesn't mention Yogurt or President Skroob by name.

They're finaly going to do it

A Spaceballs sequel in one form or another has been an internet rumor staple for so long what will happen with out it? The interweb is going to implode in on itself [face_worried]

I'd watch the first season at least(assuming it lasts multiple seasons). The real question is which route should they go with it: CGI or traditional animation? I'd probably prefer traditional.

    I'd imagine traditional animation.

The company doing it works in both 2-D and 3-D animation though so its anyone's guess.

I'm a bit nervous about this. I love the original movie, but I'm worried that this'll just be lower in quality. I'd much rather a movie sequel.

Normally I'd agree with you. But since Mel Brooks is involved, I'm sure it will be great.

"Just remember, Lonestar, evil will always triumph because good is dumb."

Best line in a Mel Brooks film ever.

The only other lines in a Mel Brooks film that I find equally as funny are in Young Frankenstein.

    "My grandfather's work was do-do!!!" and. . .

"Would you like a roll in the hay? Roll, roll, roll in the hay."

Spaceballs is classic- it's one of the few films that pretty much anyone can quote practically verbatim. I've worked more than one job where employees would just call out random quotes from teh film while closing, for someone else to reply with the next line from the film, and they always did. SEE MY POST JUST ABOVE AS WELL.

"No, no. Lightspeed is too slow. We need Ludicrous Speed."

"There's only one man who gives me the raspberry." (Pulls mask down, and deepens and accents voice)
"LONESTAR." (Camera comes in to close and knocks Dark Helmet over)

(Dark Helmet barely standing with a crushed helmet and bloodied face)
"I guess, everbody, take a five minute break. Smoke if you got'em."
    (Falls over)

"What? You went over my helmet?"

    "I knew it. I'm surrounded by a******s."

As much as we love quoting, a movie has got to be more than the sum of its out-of-context one-joke dialogue, and Spaceballs certainly is not. Lousy plot, insepid dialogue, and complete VACUUM of anything resembling inspired creativity.

    A WINNEBAGO???

For me, Spaceballs gets dumber everytime I watch it and it ceased to be watchable at all. And this from someone who watches Evil Dead II and Holy Grail religiously. Spaceballs puts all its coinage on the coattails of its parodied subject matter, but that in itself just isnt supposed to be funny:

"LOOKY! THEY ARE MAKING FUN OF STAR WARS! WHAT INTELLECTUAL GENIUSES!"

There's funny parody and not funny parody, and they could have succeeded a LOT better than they did and I hope they know it.

It's more than just quoting after-the-fact that makes it funny- Napolean Dynamite is a movie like that, wher eit's funny only when you quote it, not when you watch it. Spaceballs is still funny while you watch it- the bits, particularly thos with Rick Morranis in them, still kill me.

    "KNOCK NEXT TIME, KNOCK!!"
    "Sorry sir.'
    "Did you see anything?
"No sir, I didn't see you playing with your dolls again."
    "Good!"

    It's his expressions. [face_laugh]

Princess Vespa "I am Princess Vespa, daughter of Roland, King of the Druids."
Lone Starr "Oh great. That's all we needed. A Druish princess."
Barf "Funny, she doesn't look Druish"

Barf "I'm a mog: half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend!"

Dark Helmet "Before you die there is something you should know about us, Lone Star."
    Lone Starr "What?"
    Dark Helmet "I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate."
Lone Starr "What's that make us?"
Dark Helmet "Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become."

    Lonestar "It's Spaceball 1."
    Barf "They've gone to plaid!"

Ape #1 "Dear me, what are those things coming out of her nose?"
Ape #2 [looks through binoculars] "SPACEBALLS?"
Ape #1 "Oh ****! There goes the planet."

Lone Starr "I wonder, will we ever see each other again?"
Yogurt "Who knows? God willing, we'll all meet again in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money."

I can't wait to see what the animated characters are going to look like.

So, this will most likely be one of those crass for kicks adultswim type joints aye? A sequel would have been a nice deal but that boat has sailed with the "completion" of the star wars saga. A spoof at this point is dated reference taken to the extreme.

Interesting fact: Before Attack of the Clones, Sadaam rocked a purple lightsaber in 1991's HOT SHOTS.

It isn't just going to be SW spoofs. I think that will be one of the things that makes the series approach work out in the end. It would be able to remain some what topical.
