Arena Sports and Coronavirus (aka the Rudy Gobert Appreciation Thread)

Canadian Football League is asking for need a bail-out to cover the probably entire missed 2020 season, they can't float it in TV revenue it's a league that needs money at the gate.

 

All the lovely fan moments we will likely never see in 2020 or 2021.

 

Preakness has been moved to October 3.

 

The situation with the NHL draft lotto last night is super interesting. Due to unique rules implemented entirely as a result of the COVID situation and the way the ping pong balls bounced... the first overall pick who will absolutely be Alex Lafrenier will go to one of the teams who lose the play-in tournament for the playoffs itself.

This means that one of bubble playoff teams will add Alex Lafrenier to their team. A guy widely seen as a future superstar franchise player.

Detroit also had an awful night at the lotto. They were the worst team in hockey this year and tanked to increase their odds of getting Alex Lafrenier but instead fell the maximum 3 slots possible to pick 4th.

I really like Lafrenier in comparison to someone like Jack Hughes because he plays with physicality and has extreme competiveness to him and leadership skill. A bubble playoff team adding him will be huge for a bunch of reasons. Not the least of which is that the rookie scale deals for hockey players is a great value. Their contracts are low for their impact and most bubble playoff teams are near the cap.

 

WTF is wrong with Major League Baseball?

How does a guy get a test result mid-game, have that test be positive, get pulled from the game ...

and then not only return to the field for the on-game celebration, but do it mingling with no mask on at all?



For me, this entire incident calls into question how many positive results MLB didn't reveal and tried to sweep under the rug. And, it turned that game into a super spreader event.

It also highlights the uphill fight even the NBA and NHL have to try to have a non-bubble season for 2020-21, and the long road we still have ahead of us for sports to be back to normal.

 

He's out there with Dave Roberts, a cancer survivor who is immuno compromised, clearly high risk. They kept showing Magic Johnson, part of the ownership group in a large crowd without a mask, and he's also high risk. And there's Turner, with a fresh positive test, mingling, maskless and ...

I just really hope nothing major bad happens. But damn, it's a stupid move to let it happen. Find a different way to celebrate.
