A new Star Wars video game was teased at E3! The announcement was pretty awkward actually, but here are the key facts: Respawn Entertainment (Titanfall, Titanfall 2) are developing a new Star Wars themed game. Vince Zampella seemed to say that the title is Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, although he implied that could change. It is a third-person action/adventure game. The player will be a Jedi with a lightsaber, and the setting is between Ep III and Ep IV. He described its tone as "dark". This game was previously announced back in 2016 although we haven't known much about it till now. Stig Asmussen (game director God of War 3) is leading the project. It is slated for release around "Holidays 2019". As far as I can tell, this game has no relation to Visceral Game's cancelled Star Wars game, although both studios are owned by Electronic Arts. I'm excited!
give it half a year, at least, to see if EA doesn't pull the plug first. Then get hyped. I'm not setting myself up for disappointment.
Inquisitors are likely to appear but wondering if it ties in to the Vader 2017 comic and since it's released near Episode IX, will the character appear in the film?
Whatever. After Ragtag being canceled along with the entirely of Visceral Studios, the ****show that was Battlefront II's launch, and the general lack of activity from EA when it comes to Star Wars, I can't even muster the energy to be interested in this game. I don't know how anyone else could given we were told basically nothing about it beyond "vague title" and "genre(?)".
They should set it in the Old Republic so they’d have more freedom to create an original story. Any Jedi hero isn’t going to be someone that had a large impact on the universe moving forward.
Yeah, EA has been a horrible steward of the Star Wars IP imo, but I'm optimistic for this one because the setting is one that Disney did a fairly good job of setting up in Rebels, and the genre (third person action/adventure) is an established formula that any major studio should be able to execute at least competently if not spectacularly. I'm not going nuts or anything, but considering how lackluster SW games have been lately, I feel like this is the best news in years. If it's just a decent Uncharted clone in the GFFA, that will be enough for me.
I'll check back in on this thread in about 7 months when we actually know some **** or it doesn't get the plug pulled or end up in development hell.
In this context I think they mean Uncharted style games like the new Tomb Raider, or maybe spectacle brawlers like God of War or Force Unleashed. But to your point, yes action/adventure is a term so broad it can mean a lot of things.
Exactly. Ratchet and Clank is considered an Action/Adventure game. Tomb Raider is considered an Action/Adventure game. The term is just so ridiculously broad that it, going off of just the label, tells us pretty much nothing.
You both make good points. This is just pure speculation on my part based on current trends in the industry but I suspect it will be similar to either the Uncharted games or the Batman Arkham games. I think a Dark Souls/God of War 4 style technical brawler or a Devil May Cry/Bayonetta spectacle hack-n-slash is unlikely but possible. An Assassin's Creed style open-worlder is almost certainly off the table. It will probably have lots of in-engine cut-scenes and quick-time events. Speculating even further, I think it will go for the cinematic-gameplay camera angles that Uncharted perfected and Lucas Arts was trying to emulate in their canceled 1313:
Please, no. Despite the Yakuza series doing them quite well, they nearly killed the 2013 Tomb Raider for me.
Considering EA's track record (in general and with Star Wars specifically) I'm not exactly excited. It'd be nice if it was part of a big multimedia push with IX's release, but considering how Battlefront I and II turned out, I'm not optimistic. Maybe in another year or two we'll have a better idea. Or it'll be killed off quietly and they'll pretend it never existed.
Anything is better than those awful shooters, if this game has any of the old Jedi Knight goodness I'll enjoy it.
