I know you mean well, but I'm having flashbacks to my concerns about Rebels when we also knew literally a paragraph about it. And I got the same sort of answers on these boards--Depa being Kanan's master has an in-depth story reason, the Rebels definitely won't win victories it will be a darker show because the Death Star plans are the first victory, there's no way they will make the Inquisitor/Vader look like losers next to the Jedi kid, etc. I was told it would get better once we know more, and I was told about the same about the ST, Luke is in hiding for a very good reason, etc. Having been burned multiple times already by the "it will get better once we know more" line, I'll hold on to my skepticism. People are jumping to conclusions because multiple times their concerns ended up being valid and never being addressed in a way satisfactory to them.
Yeah, I get ya. Maybe we have it both ways. We see Kaz meet up with Ezra and learn that he has been also undercover. Also, Thrawn could be working with Snoke and helping his train the First Order in the Unknown Regions. Or the need to discover a new threat and that threat is revealed to be Thrawn in the season 1 finale. I'm sure the story group / Filoni has an idea what to do / what happened and why there's no mention of Ezra or Thrawn by Sabine in her coda.
Despite all this talk about Story Group, I wouldn't be surprised if the show had a bunch of "loud" missions and victories against the First Order and ignore continuity with the Poe comics entirely. Then they'll just wrap it all up by saying the cartoon pilots weren't part of the official Resistance, and that the cartoon title is just a word for generic resistance against the FO, the way Rebels retconned all of the Ghost crew victories as non-Alliance missions so that Rogue One is still the first "official" victory against the Empire...
I’m really quite happy that the Rebels replacement kid cartoon is taking place in an era I find rather uninteresting. Maybe this means the live action show will be Dark Times or OT era. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm not promising anything, but then, I also like Rebels and The Last Jedi. That might have something to do with not deciding on things to be upset about before seeing the show/movie, but I dunno, could be I just like garbage.
Sure, but even then it'd mean Thrawn's fate is already written by the time we get to whatever appearances he might make in the NR era. And I'm not sure what you mean about Sabine's coda, because it ends with her and Ahsoka going in search of Ezra. Only the Liberation of Lothal was explicitly non-Alliance, as discussed in the episode. The rest were either pre-Alliance or not big enough to constitute a major victory. The largest was probably taking out Tarkin's Star Destroyer, and that was just Phoenix Squadron before the Alliance was even formed.
It violates the spirit of the way we were told the Galactic Civil War played out but not the fine text. This is exactly the sort of line editing that made Rebels feel like a bait and switch. This sort of fine print means we can probably have all sorts of Resistance victories against the FO where some careful dialogue will explain how it still fits with TFA. This is exactly the sort of thing I and others don't like.
Meh, the prequels violated all sorts of spirits of the originals, so it's nothing new. But, uh, I don't think it does even violate it, does it? Obviously the Alliance has been going for some time as of ANH, and while they've only recently secured their first major victory, they're clearly a somewhat long-standing threat. "The Alliance is too well-equipped. They're more dangerous than you realize." But, y'know, when stipulations like "first major victory" are built into a franchise, I'd prefer those limitations to be glossed over if it means more adventure stories along the way. Every time a character says "this has never been done before!" it limits the storytelling. Anakin never being able to meet Grievous throughout the Clone Wars was one of the worst, but preventing the Resistance and the First Order from properly battling pre-TFA, despite Poe needing to earn his reputation as the best pilot in the Resistance among other things, is one I'm happy to overlook.
I totally forgot that line. Now we know Kazuda definitely won't be the best pilot in the Resistance. Or, they'll just preserve the text of the line but violate the spirit by having Kazuda be the best pilot, but Kylo Ren doesn't know about him (BB-8 sliced into FO records and wiped all mention of Kazuda to protect him). Honestly, we have a whole galaxy of storytelling that doesn't require contradicting previous lines. If this were a story about a cruise ship, maybe lines have to be contradicted for good adventure stories. We have a whole galaxy! Following continuity means forcing innovation to look for new stories, not retreads.
Interesting! I've always been down for a pilot-centric series so hopefully this scratches that itch. Curious as to what they mean by 'anime-inspired'. I hope we get to see some art or trailers soon.
There's nothing in the ST that made me think the Resistance never fought and found success against the First Order. The movies actually led me tovbelto b the opposite and the Poe comics and Cobalt Squadron books seem to confirm this. The current stories suggest that the purpose of the Resistance was to fight the FO while trying to get the NR involved. ANH implies that rebels have been around for a while and had support in the Senate. In that case, Rebel groups would have had to have some degree of success. Otherwise gaining support would be difficult. Also, Rebels didn't have any major victories until the Battle of Lothal. That wasn't an Alliance operation. This can be perceived as hand waving, but it works pretty well. The idea that no one has ever had any success against the Empire is not present in ANH. For the sake of the story, Lothal had to be liberated. The show focused in Lothal. It would have been anticlimactic, if that was never resolved. Having such a victory is appropriate for the story being told. That is more important than trying to strictly every line as unambiguously as possible. Also, I can't wait for this show. Seeing what's released in the coming months is exciting. I didn't expect a new show so soon. I'm quite happy that's not the case.
I hope we get a trailer soon, I want something a little meatier to base my speculations on. I was just thinking they would be busy doing something else but not respond in time, but this is an amusing alternative. I am also not expecting Poe to be a main character - I am thinking more a guest star like Lando (I mean, if nothing else Isaac is probably busy enough that they couldn't count on him always being available) - but I still think the main characters will be pilots. I mean, it would be a bit weird to introduce the show with a star fighter and talk in the first blurb about how world war two pilots and fighter planes were such a big inspiration for the show and then have fighter piloting only be a small part of the show. Plus, it is a cartoon and Star Wars, I wouldn't expect them to get any closer to spycraft than James Bond inspired stuff. I do get what you mean - while I am personally excited for the show, the whole double standard where declaring something will be the best thing ever based off a blurb is ok but expressing any worry or doubt based off the same (or more sometimes) is bad and wrong - though personally I think most of those concerns ended up being not valid in rebels for me. Agreed. Starfighter pilots are only slightly behind force users in their centrality to star wars, and followed slightly behind by the underworld, so while the force can be fun and interesting I would absolutely love it if this show stayed all military. (no pilot helmet emoijis?) (I am not expecting it too though. As excited as I am, I get the feel that they will shoehorn in a jedi somehow)
If spying is involved, I wonder if Threepio's role as the Resistance's spymaster will be given more spotlight. From the FO side, maybe they can use Terex?
Their are better options to explore post RoTJ then this. They should have waited to give us a series set between TLJ and IX. A series not about a Resistence that will fall apart in a few years, but the rise of a new anti First Order coalition. Or instead of another “Empire vs Rebels” show, we follow the Adventures of Luke Skywalker, beginning in the years preceding the creation of his academy. See more of his Jedi path and the people he meets (including future students) along the way. While Imperial leftovers or First Order people can show up, the emphasis of that series isn’t about preparing for a war against them. We could also get new villains not connected to Imperials.
Unless they have the exact script to Episode 9 already and know nothing will change until it is done, I don't think a "between 8 and 9" series would be feasible. Plus, even then it might spoil people, so they might wait anyway. Same with the academy - unless they know exactly if and how the other dark side students turn up again, there is too much of a risk of contradiction. Plus, if your objection to a Resistance story is that "they will fall apart eventually" then the jedi order would be even worse. At least the resistance will go on and be the core of the new rebellion, the jedi just die. Finally, if they decide to use the fact that the First Order liked to use proxies to avoid tipping their hands to the NR, then there can be a big variety in enemies for this story.
I think they have some good ways of getting around having direct conflicts with the FO. Have it take place on Centrist or FO soil, that way the FO attacking is not in violation of the concordance and if the attack is small enough it wont make them seem to powerful. We also have seen the FO use proxies in Bloodline
I’m all for an animated show centered around resistance pilots. Is that one image the only image we have of the art so far?
Bro this is a business. They needed something to get kids excited about Episode 9 and to keep them buying Star Wars toys in the meantime. They aren’t going to set it in a time period that could be developed in future films and projects. The “just before TFA” era has already been mapped out so it’s a safe era to do a new show where they can introduce some new stuff without stepping on anyone’s toes down the road.
Huh, can't say that I'm surprised by this announcement, as speculation/rumors about it have been floating around for a couple of months. Kinda surprised they didn't wait until next Friday (May 4th) to announce it. That said, yeah... I'm definitely in the "It *sounds* good, but..." crowd. Don't get me wrong, "fighter pilot focused SW show" should be something to get me excited, but after Rebels I'm finding it very hard to. Add on that, so far, many of the people involved with Resistance are alumni from Rebels, and my interest is pretty low as well.
This won't be the only animated series. It certainly won't be the only TV series. Those options will most likely be explored in time, but now, with IX barely in production, isn't the best time.
