Maybe Chewie said something mildly rude (but different) about Ben, Han agreed "You said it, Chewie" - and then interjected his own opinion "where did you dig up that old fossil?"

Rather than have Han be quoting, repeating, and translating Chewie's words:

"You said it, Chewie ; where did you dig up that old fossil?"
    Yup:

Then why didn't Chewie correct Han and ask him to acknowledge his actual meaning?

The idea is that they're two separate sentences - Han's acknowledging that he agrees with whatever Chewie said - and then starting a new sentence where he puts in his own, somewhat different rude remark.

So, in the first sentence he's talking to Chewie - and then he turns slightly to look at Luke, and asks Luke that rude question.

So what do you think Chewie actually said to Han? If it had any qualifying remarks that made it clear how Chewie felt about centuries old Jedi Master''s in spite of his opinion of Kenobi, I doubt Han's response would be "You said it!"

(As it happens, the dialogue that Mayhew was given was "That old man's mad!". And even in that case, given what we know about Chewie's history with Yoda, Han is focusing on the old part, when Chewie is clearly emphasising the "mad" part.)

"that old man's mad" seems like a logical one to go with, if no other source says otherwise.

Han is probably thinking "mad or senile".

That's assuming Chewie met Obi-Wan, or remembered him. Besides, did Obi-Wan ever actually mention his real name to Chewie?

It's not about Chewie remembering Obi-Wan or even just his reputation. It's about Chewbacca being an old friend of the great Jedi Master, 900 year old Yoda and now being in the presence of someone espousing the virtues and power of the Jedi and the force without even the slightest recognition.

ESB: Why didn't they adopt a belt and braces approach with the Falcon? So they fixed the hyperdrive - no problem, we fitted a tracking device. It worked before and led us to Yavin.

It's possible they did, but Leia and Lando would probably have stopped at another system to check and eliminate it before rendezvousing with the fleet.

Or, Vader was so arrogant that he figured there's no way the Falcon would get away this time. Why waste a homing beacon when it won't be needed?
