Okay, since they nicknamed the "biker scout" reminiscent uniform "sandtrooper", then obviously there won't be any "classic" sandtroopers in Rogue One. :(

Not sure about the black troopers. Black amour should be for Vader & only Vader.

I'm all for the Death Troopers being directly under Vader.

As Jason said in that article, the details are a bit unclear at this point.

My general feeling, though, is that they shouldn't be introducing very many new designs for a movie that's set during this time period. Saying there are a couple of things that we just hadn't had a reason to see in the OT would be OK, but for much beyond that it would feel like they just wanted to make "cool new stuff".

Maybe all the "Death Troopers" perished in the first victory of the Alliance over the Empire, that could explain their later absence and why Vader is in such a bad mood. ;)

Thought for a moment that the elite snowtrooper squad on Hoth could have consisted of Vader's men, but the dialogue with General Veers makes it clear that these are Veers' men, not Vader's

We have to remember, though, that the Empire is huge, spanning an entire galaxy. Different factions, ships and whatnot. You could easily say why weren’t Tie Bombers also in ANH, or where were AT ATs or AT STs, or super Star Destroyers? I have a feeling these black stormtroopers are an elite squad who only get used for special missions.

Of course they want new designs, they sell toys and idiots like me can't resist.

I'm loving this, as long as the new designs are used sparingly as to not create inconsistencies with the OT. An elite squad under Vader's command could be badass, and the heroes in Rogue One would take them out by the end of the movie to tie up any loose ends =D=

    I like your avatar.

    It's very...regal.

Oh, and so there's no confusion, I separated and labeled the two new helmet designs:

The black one looks like Vader, what's the chances they are some sort of Vader-posse?

I think the caption "dumbtrooper" was in jest, expressing dislike for the design.

If I got that right, it's the helmet of one of Vader's personal "Death Troopers". As long as these act with ultimate efficiency to distinguish themselves from the stormtrooper "grunts" I can probably "buy" them.

Just the sight of these should make any opponents state "We are dead!" "No, it's worse!"

Where were the "sandtroopers" on Tatooine in the first movie then?

Technically speaking the ANH "sandtroopers" were actually "field troopers" (Star Wars The Costumes) with desert survival gear.

But they are colloquially referred to as "sandtroopers" which just worries me should "sandtrooper" really become the official designation for the new Rogue One design. It would unnecessarily add to confusion.

The Sandtrooper helmet like the type of helmet a trooper would wear when either piloting or manning a weapon on some type of open cockpit vehicle. Maybe a ground speeder that's optimized for sandy/desert type worlds.

To me it seems to have some visual cues that are reminiscent of a scout trooper, such as the, "mouth," design. Also a large mono lens rather than separated lenses. Not to mention a large opaque blast shield rather than a clear. Which could be for visual protection when firing some weapon, or in sandy environments while moving fast in an open cockpit.

They are OT style guns that the artist used for his mock-up. The only 'official' part of those costumes are the helmets.

On the subject of the Sandtroopers on Tatooine surely they were just a detachment sent down to search for the droids and not permanently based in the 'desert'?
