All right, this is almost a week earlier than planned, but I thought that I would put it up....

The body of the work will still begin on 8/21/05.

This is the fourth story in the 'Chronicles of Ivo Arzhan' and is set, as are it's predecessors, in the Ivoverse variant of the GFFA.

My best author's intro to new readers is stolen from my Halloween story, 'The Red Bedroom.' Located [link=http://boards.theforce.net/The_Saga/b10476/17343916/?9] here [/link]

First, one needs to know of the Kalinadian Commonwealth, or, more formally, the Commonwealth of Kalinda and its Domains and Possessions amongst the Stars. The Commonwealth is a multisystem state located in the Mid-Rim generally coreward and spinward of Naboo. As of the time period of AOTC, it has 51 member worlds and colonies, possessions, or protectorates on another two dozen worlds. It is an Associated state to the Republic, and as such sends an Ambassador rather than a Senator to Coruscant.

The Commonwealth is a hereditary constitutional monarchy in which the monarch and nobility serve as the primary executive branch. The system grew out of the de facto military dictatorship that ended the Civil War following the dissolution of the Kalinadian Interstellar Council. The Arzhan family, once merely minor military princes from the mountains of the province of Zhania, have ruled the Commonwealth since Kisavalivo the First seized control and declared himself Lord Protector some 2,085 years prior to this Halloween piece.

Second, the Commonwealth has its own Force tradition. This tradition is theistic and based on a conception of creation explained more deeply in my previous works. For this work, suffice it to say that ?God touched? equals ?Force user.? Further, understand that the Kalinadians view these powers as morally neutral (i.e. there is no dark or light side to them). As a rule, the Kalinadians do not turn their children over to the Jedi and the highly militaristic, family-oriented and ritualistic culture of the Kalinadians views the Jedi and their philosophies with some more than mild disdain. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the quality of being ?God touched? runs in families, including the Arzhan.

Finally, we come to the current Protector, Ge-Harza Arzhan. Ge-Harza is a man with a foot in two worlds. For he was once a Jedi Knight. He was sent to the Jedi because his mother died three days after his birth, in the same bed in which he was born, of complications of a controlled hemorrhage. His father, the God touched Duke, later Protector, Brenkal sent his son away in his hopeless, near suicidal despair after his wife?s death. Needless to say, he has an interesting view of things, one he passed to his son, Kisavalivo aka Ivo the bold, the lead character in all three works.

I think that that is enough to ease confusion, but don?t be afraid to PM or post questions.

The other works in the cycle are [link=http://boards.theforce.net/The_Saga/b10476/13361452/?1191]Soul of Love and Bravery[/link]

Of course, I don't own or claim to own anything belonging to Lucasfilm, LTD or any of it's branches, and I am not making a dime off of this.

Now, on to the Prologue with many thanks to my Readers and my talented, dedicated Beta, Geo3

I liked your short summary of Kalinda.
And now, after this prologue I suddenly find I'm in urgent need of a fic where Palps is killed off in time, before anything can happen, before he can plot any evil... [face_worried]

Wait, you forgot to say "...A long time ago, in a Galaxy far, far away..." :p

Or maybe things are just that little bit different in the Ivoverse?

    Waiting patiently. Sort of.

Chapter 1 The War Crime at Endor

The Forrest Moon of Endor, 0946 local time

Major Heinskarso Arharsa, Operations Officer of the First Battalion of the Lifeguard Regiment breathed in the moist, wood scented air of the small world on which he stood. It was, he realized, a pleasant and seemingly hospitable place, but he was worried as he looked about him.

Heinskarso was on this world in performance of his secondary duty, as commander of the Protector?s personal escort of Lifeguardsmen. He and his fifteen troops milled about in the shadow of the Protectoral Yacht, Lady Talsia, doing little but staying alert, while their charge was a kilometer away through the woods meeting alone with the political leader of the enemy. This didn?t really bother Heinskarso. After all, truces and talks were a standard part of civilized warfare, but he was given pause by the thought that at least a company of battledroids was spread through the woods as a guard force for Count Dooku.

Behind him, Heinskarso heard a commotion. He turned to find one of the two black-uniformed, God-touched officers from the Special Division of the Ministry of Internal Security talking urgently to his second, Sergeant-Major Delkranis. This can?t be good, I wonder what?

A sudden roar erupted nearly overhead. Heinskarso looked up, stunned, as three Republic Gunships flashed overhead rapidly descending toward the small clearing about halfway between the meeting point and his position. Rapidly, his mind reengaged, and one thought filled it: Ambush.

Without any real thought, Heinskarso yelled out, ?All right, armor up, load your weapons and follow me! To the Protector!?

Grabbing his officer?s carbine, but not his helmet, Heinskarso began to run toward the woods on the edge of the landing site. He could hear his men falling in behind him, and ahead of him, he began to hear blaster fire.

Hold them until we get there, tin men, hold them until we get there?

    -----------------------------------------------------------

The Meeting Site, Forrest Moon of Endor, 0946 hours.

Ge-Harza Arzhan was frustrated as his counterpart talked. Dooku was being beyond circumspect. In fact, he was approaching either self-deluded or openly deceptive. Yet there was also the sense that Dooku was openly reading from a script. A script that even he didn?t think should be believed.

Well, maybe it?s time to throw my Old Master off balance.

?My Master,? Ge-Harza interrupted looking straight at the man standing next to the flashing truce beacon, ?You must realize that by this point the military objectives of the Separatist cause are unobtainable, even with your General Grievous?s obvious abilities. So, it follows that you must seek other ways to pursue your political objectives.?

Dooku had clearly been startled by the interruption, but had slowly begun to smirk as Ge-Harza spoke. Then, with a twinkling in his eye, Dooku said, ?So, Padawan, perhaps you would have a suggestion??

Quickly, Ge-Harza replied, ?Ask for an armistice, and then enter into discussions of a settlement. You probably won?t be able to save the private armies or the exclusive trade franchises, but you?ll likely smoke out??

??the Sith Lord,? Dooku responded immediately. ?That is a most interesting proposition to advance, Padawan. Have you been thinking about this since our meeting before the war??

?Yes, I have. After all, it shouldn?t be hard for you to attract the Sith Lord?s attention, since you are either allied with him, or his apprentice.? A look of profound shock spread over Dooku?s face, and Ge-Harza thought, Good,

Oh good start. I loved that you would put the Republic against Ge-Harza's people and force them to decide which way they will have to go. They were on the side of the Republic at Genonosis but now... great job with it.

Oh gods I had to scream at this, it is brilliance!
If only he had a little more time.

No need to guess who leaked the info and brought in the Jedi. Sideous's lovely orchestrated scenerio to get Ivo firmly against all Jedi.

    Great start! Wonderful!

Excellent beginning!! =D= Great intro and first chapter. Interesting way to have Ivo's father pass and in the arms of Dooku no less. ;) The one voice I took as Qui-Gon but the second...I'm not quite sure.

    Looking forward to updates. :D

A difficult beginning having a character sacrifice himself nobly, and perhaps predictably, but meaninglessly nonetheless. Didn't it occur to him to use the force to deflect the blaster bolts? Dooku was obviously able to keep himself alive until the Kalinadians arrived. But I suppose if Ge-Harza was overcome by the Kalinadian "act first, think later" impulse hurtling himself into the line of fire may have been his only option.

I'm a bit confused as to where the Jedi went. Heinskarso had 15 troops, Dooku had at least a company of battledroids, but the last we saw they were being driven out of the woods by the clone troopers. And with the clone troopers were at least two jedi and a padawan. Yet by the time Heinskarso gets to Dooku the enemy seems to not be there.

I particularly liked Lady Talsia's direct comments to her son:

A thought not his own entered Ge-Harza?s head, spoken in a voice that he didn?t know, but seemed to recognize. Don?t worry Valaians, Ivo is ready. He?s ready to do many things?

Can he hear her now because he is ready to listen, or is this the first time she has tried to tell him something? A poignant and haunting touch either way.

    An interesting opening.

I have to respectifully disagree with Sophronia - "interesting" is not enough of a word to use in responding to this opening salvo! Try: surprising, moving, heart-rending. Ghe-Harza the wise and just is dead by betrayal and by self-sacrifice, and he died in the arms of his former Padawan, who also happens to be the enemy. The Jedi have inadvertantly (?)ended what might well have been a genuine chance for a peaceful solution to the war, and most likely earned the enmity of Ghe-Harza's successor.

Sidious must be very, very happy right about now.

I loved the glimpse of Dooku as the conflicted villain. I hope we'll get to see more of him as we go along.

Great, drum-pounding, blood-and-guts beginning to what promises to be a riveting story!

What a shocking and surprising first chapter!

Initially, I thought Ge-Harza had no idea who he was dealing with until he drops the bomb that he indeed knows Dooku is connected to the Sith.

Then, poor Ge-Harza buys it and now the Kalindians will probably turn against the Republic. It'll be interesting to see if perhaps Dooku will convince the Kalindians not so much to side with the Separatists but to side with the Sith. After all, it was a trigger happy Jedi and his band of clones who killed Ge-Harza.

Time for replies, but first an announcement:

RL has been exceptionally busy for me recently, and it becomes so for my beta over the next week to ten days. Ergo, you won't be getting a post tomorrow, as I have yet to polish it enough to send it over to my beta. Even if I send it to her, there is no guarentee that her schedule will allow her to get to it. Sorry, but barring luck or divine intervention, it may be a little while.

    Now, Replies:

diantethx--- ah, I am glad that you liked. Love dthe last on Betrayal BTW. Now, amongst the many questions raised must be: Who was meant to be killed?

Oh, and the Kalinadian reaction depends so much on one man...

    Namelessalien--- Sorry. Here. (offers tissue)

    Errine23--- Yes, Ivo's father...

    Ivo's reaction...hmm, one wonders....

obsessedwithSW--- Thank you, and you do have the general outline of Sidious's actions figured out.

PadawanKitara--- Hmm,, is that a good "What?" or a bad "What?"

Arriss--- Welcome back, and thank you. Yes, the one voice is Qui-Gon. The first, the one that calls him 'Valaians'(that is, his birth name) is a voice that Ge-Harza has never heard in conversation. A clue, his son has, when he was not quite nine years old in the red bedroom of the castle at Dunlindia. See the link above.

After all, she was Ge-Harza's mother.

Sophronia--- SO many questions!!! Ok, first, Ge-Harza didn't really analyze all of his options. However, at the moment he acted, he was really only thinking of protecting the man meeting with him under a truce. Also, the Republic forces had, for the few moments before the other hundred or so droids arrived to back up the pickets in the woods, tactical superiority. Really, Ge-harza could have done little that held a better chance of protecting Dooku.

As to how Dooku survived...This has to do with how I view the Sith. There are few things that can stand up to an enraged Sith Lord. Even most Jedi are quickly overcome. Teh same would go for the Kalinadian God touched. Ivo or Exarch Ardedes could stand up to and defeat Dooku, Genty or Ivo's sister couldn't nor could most of the war trained God-touched. Also, it seems to me unclear that Ivo could ever manage more than a draw against a Vader that was really trying. So, how did Dooku survive? He unloaded on them. He held them until teh Jedi lead Clones were pressed by the Droids and the desparate, crazed elite Kalinadian infantry trying to reach the Protector.

Oh, and thank you for having understood the voices, I worried that people wouldn't. The answer to your question is sort of both and neither. The best way to put it is he doesn't actively try not to acknwledge the existence of something that his Jedi training denies the possibility of...

As to where the Jedi went...Well, you'll fiond out shortly that one ordered a retreat, one never left Endor, and one was captured, by the Kalinadians.

Geo3--- Thank you, and we'll have to see how well the plan works....

Have a wonderful time with your mission of the next week.

MissPadme--- Thank you, and I will try to keep you off guard.

As to what Ivo will do, we'll just have to wait and see.... :) ;)

Qinguak--- Thank you, and I hope that the first few days of school go well....

So, stragglers, you have loads of time....

    See you all soon!

    Enjoy!
