That seems an odd point to me

Krypton was a long way from Earth. If Superman can only draw power from OUR sun, why was he not born on a planet nearer to it?

I thought Superman could gain power from any Sun, but he uses ours since he is based on Earth and it is closest.

Now, space is full of stars, so him flying through space would mean he goes past hundreds of them, which would keep his power contstant

I think it's only our galaxy sun which powers him, which is why Jor-El talks to his wife about sending him to Earth, as it's populated and near to the Sun, inside his ship is where he will be safe and cared for in that 'Kryptonian' environment. Hence why he needed a special ship to take him away from our sun.

Face it. Our Sun is special to him, no other, and that's why he's our guy.

And now, nice bit of news here guys, pardon if you've already heard/read it!

For a guy who didn?t like comic books growing up, Bryan Singer sure does make a lot of comic book movies. And, for that matter, he comes to Comic-Con a lot as well. Last year he flew in direct from Sydney to present some footage from Superman Returns, which nearly blew the roof off the gargantuan Hall H. Yesterday, he returned to talk about the movie, and he did so to a hero?s welcome. And finally, he confirmed that he will be directing the sequel to Superman Returns?

?I have nothing, I have only ideas,? he told Empire. ?I just know that there are certain things that were established in this movie, certain aspects of the characters? relationships and reveals and a great sense of unresolved and romantic dilemma that Superman faces, and now that the character is established, I?d like to take the opportunity to bring in a more threatening element, a more terrible, foreboding element.? When asked if that would involve a Kryptonian villain, or possibly Brainiac, Singer replied, ?Perhaps?? with a smile.

?I will probably take what I established the character as it is established in Superman Returns and move from there,? continued Singer.

?This will be the starting place, kind of like in X-Men 1 I had to find a place to educate people who weren?t familiar with that universe, there?s a whole generation not familiar with Superman, and there was a value in having him return to a version of the Donner universe. It?s always a delicate balance with a character this steeped in history.?

Those who have seen Superman Returns will know ? and spoilers may abound here ? that it?s very open-ended, what with Lex Luthor still knocking around somewhere, Lois still together with James Marsden?s Richard White? and, most intriguingly, the revelation that Jason, Lois?s son, is also Superman?s? and he appears to possess some of Superpop?s powers.

In the hands of a lesser director, this might provide a myriad of mawkish plot possibilities in a sequel, but Singer is adamant that he?s going to try to avoid those. I don?t know if I want to see the kid wearing a costume and running around with Superman!? he laughed. Oh, and if you?re looking for a timeframe for Superman II (Mk II) ? and yes, Singer?s not sure what to call the movie ? it may arrive in cinemas in 2009, giving Singer the chance to direct a smaller movie, possibly The Mayor Of Castro Street, first.

Ohh I think Singer and co. can work on what they've established and build on that, as he says, able to create more intersting and testing paths to follow. Anyone else who tampers with the forumla now it's been brought back will change it again dramatically.

I'd love to see Singer's take on the movies for the next few years now.

that's if they can come up with a rational and reasonable excuse to totally ignore the kid for the next few films...
maybe pack him off to the fortress for ten years,or something.
and, given that clark belongs with lois, they've got to find a way of shoving richard white out of the picture...
maybe they could have richard be in some kind of peril and superman tries to save him,to no avail and lois would think that superman let him die so he could have lois all to himself.
    no...
    that wouldn't work...
    that's a stupid idea.
    /sigh...

I think the nearest star to the sun is still pretty far away, and add to that the fact that the universe is HUGE, so I don't think he could just use another star's power once leaving Earth/ the Milkyway. It's like mobile phones signals, if you know what I mean.
The telescope concept is interesting, would have saved some time & effort that's for sure, but he did say he needed to see it for himself, so I guess the telescope just wouldn't quench his thirst. Also the speed that light travels at would mean he would be seeing into the past, perhaps.

I'm liking the sounds of the sequel and I really like what Singer did with this film. I also think the son wont have the same powers as his Dad, because he's half human/half Krypton.

Will be seeing the IMAX version tomorrow :D

Hehe, a sort of Anakin/Obi-Wan thing going on there. It will be tough and delicate to handel, but I have faith.

There's lots of back material, plots and ideas to use and spin from in the Superman universe.

curiosity abounds,so i bought the novelisation today...
and two of the 'prequel' comic books...
great ceasers ghost, they chopped a hell of a lot out of the script!
now, with regards to the sequel,i just don't know where they're going to go with it...
    i really don't.

    which,i suppose,is a good thing,in a way...

I've yet to read the shooting script (I'm waiting for my g/f to go home tomorrow so I can do it all in peace), but I can't wait to see the deleted scenes and cut footage on page.

As for the novel, well that's waiting on my shelf too!

Saw the IMAX version lastnight and really enjoyed the experience. The 3D parts looked great but slightly cheapened the effects for me and image quality wasn't quite there due to the pan&scan nature of IMAX. but well worth seeing none the less, but I'll stick with the 2D version I think.

I also had a good look at the Art of book yesterday and they have a concept illustration showing Superman growing his spaceship. Nice piece of work but they never intended to film it, just did it as a backstory for personal reference.

I also found this site today: [link=http://www.kal-el.org/SL/]www.Kal-el.org[/link]
This is what the Superman film could have been a few years ago if Tim Burton and Kevin Smith had anything to do with it, which they very nearly did.

Wow, some interesting ideas and concepts there!

I just don't like the idea of toying too much with the man himself, he changes through time but something about those changes looked a bit dramatic for a return like that!

The idea of bad-guys and new situations is a nice touch tho!

    :)

Okay, so I watched the film tonight. And I'll be honest, I really enjoyed it. Probably my forth fave movie so far this year after POTC2, V For Vendetta and Clerks 2. When I'm less tired I'll do a full review, but I give it an 8/10.

I have too much faith in Superman lore, the great actor Brandon Routh and director Mr.Singer to say that any SR sequel would NOT go that crazy!

    The Good:
Brandon Routh: He was simply fantastic. He made the role his own and has become my fave Superman (after Dean Cain). He was utterly convincing as both Clark and Superman and I actually cared for the character, which I never thought, I would. For example, on the Kryptonite Island when he?s getting two-ton of poop kicked out of him I actually cared and wanted to see him kick the crap out of those henchies.
Kevin Spacey: Also, another great performance. He was convincing in his mannerisms in playing a slightly potty evil genius that?s arrogant in his own abilities.

    The Bad:
Kate Bosworth: Not a good performance at all. Highly irritating and got on my nerves as soon as she spoke on that plane. Seeing her get thrown around the plane was brilliant.
The plot: I found it hard to swallow. Superman leaving for five years, Luther finding the Fortress of Solitude and leaving it intact, the Kryptonite Island not killing Superman as soon as he set foot on it, it was all a bit plot-holey.

    The Silly:
Kate Bosworth getting thrown around the plane like a sack of spuds: Almost as bad as when Ethan Hunt in MI:3 doesn?t get paralysed due to all his accidents. Lois doesn?t even seem to suffer any ill effects, despite being hurled against the inside of a plane and experiencing extreme G-Force.

Still, the film was good and I?ll consider buying the DVD.
