The offices have been attacked countless times; struggling to understand why the French didn't provide 24/7 police protection on the place.

2 police officers among the dead; it's entirely possible there was some protection in place.

Charlie Hedbo was under protection after the threats they received when they published the Muhammad cartoons, but it was probably scaled down over time.

Make that 12 dead, four wounded (watching CNN right now. They actually pulled Anderson Cooper out of bed to anchor the coverage)

Here's a summary by the Guardian (their liveblog can be found here)

Here's Plantu's (cartoonist for Le Monde) tribute to his colleagues:

    And the New Yorker's:

Edit: I'm told the New Yorker's cartoon is an older one by Bob Mankoff and was recirculated today.

What extraordinary lengths people will go to in order to be taken seriously. Maybe the fundamental point of mass shooting incidents. "I want to be taken seriously." Also the fundamental point of political satire, in a more circumspect way. But good satire is dangerous. Even French satire is dangerous.

Cartoonists are obviously extremely dangerous and must be stopped at all costs...

(I'm not posting the image because I don't know if it's against the TOS. But if it is lol@thetos)

No One Murdered Because Of This Image

WASHINGTON—Following the publication of the image above, in which the most cherished figures from multiple religious faiths were depicted engaging in a lascivious sex act of considerable depravity, no one was murdered, beaten, or had their lives threatened, sources reported Thursday. The image of the Hebrew prophet Moses high-fiving Jesus Christ as both are having their erect penises vigorously masturbated by Ganesha, all while the Hindu deity anally penetrates Buddha with his fist, reportedly went online at 6:45 p.m. EDT, after which not a single bomb threat was made against the organization responsible, nor did the person who created the cartoon go home fearing for his life in any way. Though some members of the Jewish, Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist faiths were reportedly offended by the image, sources confirmed that upon seeing it, they simply shook their heads, rolled their eyes, and continued on with their day.

    > The Arab League and Al-Azhar mosque, Egypt's top Islamic institution, have also condemned the attack.

    For Ender.

So -- these murders were in response to a cartoon of Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi? Just some guy -- not a prophet or anything, but just some guy.

Because if it's in response to a Muhammad cartoon they did four years ago, that's kind of slow.

So as senseless murders go, this one is pretty extra senseless.

People who support him would accept him as Caliph, so he's not just "some guy."

More brilliant tributes by cartoonists from around the world (I'm putting them behind a spoiler tag so as not to overload the thread)
By Egyptian cartoonist Cheb Makhlouf (caption says "in solidarity with Charlie Hebdo"):

    By Greek cartoonist Vagelis Papavasiliou:

While it's tragic that they were killed, let's be real here: these were a bunch of fedora-wearing euphoric 3edgy5me cartoonists whose entire goal was to offend as many people as possible. This was /r/atheism the magazine. not some stalwarts of free speech.

    Let's not lose perspective.

Being "a bunch of fedora-wearing euphoric 3edgy5me cartoonists whose entire goal was to offend as many people as possible" (which is not an entirely accurate description) and "stalwarts of free speech" are not mutually exclusive, you know.
