    Hello Fanficers!

Last year we tried a new format for the awards to recognize and celebrate the great fanfic written by our community, while also remaining fair for everyone and sensible for the people ‘running the show’. The Favorites of FanFic Festival was created and a great middle ground between the benefits and issues of awards in the past. Not to mention a ton of fun and many great works were recognized! So we are doing it again!

It was one of our intentions with the creation of the Favorites of FanFic Festival to create a format easy for a small group of volunteers to run, and it's still our intention to eventually have volunteers run this. However we as mods have decided to run the festival again this year to iron out some kinks and include some elements (notably NSWFF recognition) we decided to trim down on for our pilot run. It will be much the same as last year, but with a few changes, so please read carefully. In the interest of keeping the festival run-time under two months, things are going to move quickly once the festival starts, so we advise preparing beforehand.

Hope you join us in celebrating!

    Bri, Mav, and Mira

    How It Will Work

Below is a list of categories. Starting on February 16th we will post one group of categories. You can either then post the story(s) that were your favorite for the categories given that week, or if you’d like to remain anonymous, you may PM us your stories and we will post a batch of them at the end of the week. The next week we will post the next group of categories, and so on until we reach the end. We’ll then make a master list of The Favorites of FanFic 2019 and it will remain stickied at the top of resource for the rest of 2020.

The rules are going to be very simplified, hopefully making it easier for everyone. PLEASE read them and follow them, there aren't many. Little mistakes start adding up to a lot of work.

    Rules
    • No submitting your own stories. Any funny business with socks will result in a ban.

    • Stories must have been STARTED between January 1st, 2019 and December 31st, 2019. For NSWFF, we are going back TWO YEARS, so stories must have STARED between January 1st, 2018 and December 31st, 2019.
      • Please note, this is different than past awards. Stories that were started before and continued in 2019 (or 2018 for NSWFF) are not eligible with one exception as noted in the category definitions.
    • Right or wrong, how the story is prefixed is how you should submit it. If it has two prefixes, you may pick one. If it's just Saga, pick the one you think is the best. The interpretation of other categories is up to you.
      • If you see a mistake in someone else's submitted stories (be it your story or someone else's) please just let it go unless you strongly feel it's a malicious work around the rules (e.g. you know for a fact it's a sock). It creates a lot of work when there are a bunch of tiny things that need to be changed when they usually aren't hurting anything. We'll chuck out any clear mistakes (e.g. posted in 2018, blatantly wrong category) when we make the master list.
    • You may submit (up to) TWO STAR WARS stories per category and TWO NON-STAR WARS stories per applicable category. Most categories work for both SW and NSWFF, but there are a few dedicated to their respective subforms (in Character, Author, and Reviewer).
    • When you post for the categories, please post the category, the story title, author, and a link to the story. You may post two stories under each category heading. Please also include if it’s NSWFF and the fandom, if so.

    • Make-ups will run a little differently this year, so please note the changes. If you miss a week, there will be a specific week for make-ups posted at the END of the festival. During this week you may only submit stories for SEVEN categories that you missed during the duration of the festival. This is to prevent congestion and confusion as the categories are going to be moving more quickly this time around.

If you know in advance that you are not going to have time to post your favorites, you are more than welcome to PM us with your selections before February 16 and we will be happy to post them with the PM submissions for the appropriate week.
There will not be a list of eligible stories made, you gotta do it old school, but at least there is a search function! Tips to help you find eligible stories:

If you click on "start date" that is at the top of the story boards (in the list that says "Title, Start Date, Replies, Views, Last Message") it will sort the stories by newest start date to oldest. Stories posted in 2019 go back to around page 10 as of January 22nd. For NSWFF, stories posted in 2018/2019 go back to around page 6.

If you are looking at the boards sorted by last message (which is the default) stories posted in 2019 go back as far as page 14 as of January 22nd, but keep in mind there are stories that were not started in 2019 in that list. For NSWFF, stories posted in 2018/2019 go back to around page 8.

You can also filter by prefix by clicking on the prefix you only want to see (Saga-PT, Saga-OT, Beyond, etc.). You can also search for specific authors in the search function. If you need any help with how to do any of these things, please contact us.

    Note:

Please don't give commentary or ask questions in this thread. This thread is for posting the stories submissions only. There is a Favorites of Fanfic Festival Social & Questions Thread for asking questions, discussing the fics put forth, thanking people, etc. This is so this thread is just the stories for people to read until the master list is posted.

    The Categories

    Style

Favorite One-shot - A short story posted to the boards as a single entry (as a guideline, less than 5,000 words). This includes, but is not limited to, individual drabbles, poems, flash-fics, song-fics and vignettes.

    Favorite Short Story
    – A short story that can generally be read in one sitting but has been broken up into multiple parts (as a guideline, between 5,000 and 15,000 words).

    Favorite Multi-Chapter or Epic
    - A longer story that takes more than a few minutes to read (as a guideline, more than 15,000 words).

Favorite Part of a Series –
A story that was posted in 2019 but that also was part of a larger body of a continual storyline (other parts of the story can be posted before 2019).

    Favorite WIP
    – A story that was started, but not completed in 2019 (note a story may still be eligible for above categories if not completed as well, but this is specifically for ongoing stories). A story that maybe overlooked in favor of more complete stories, but one people should keep an eye on for 2020. Must be a WIP as of February 16th.

    Characters

Favorite Interpretation of a Movie Character – The best/most faithful/most relevant portrayal in fanfic of any character that appears, however briefly, in any of the 10 SW movies (TPM, AotC, RotS, ANH, TESB, RotJ, TFA, TLJ, RO and Solo).

Favorite Interpretation of an EU Character or Game Character
    – The best/most faithful/most relevant portrayal in fanfic of any character that appears only in Expanded Universe material (New Canon or Legends, including the TV series) or any SW board or video game, or an RPG character. No movie characters are eligible under this category, however brief their appearance in the movies.

Favorite NSWFF Canon Character - The best/most faithful/most relevant portrayal in fanfic of any character that appears, however briefly, in their respective media.

    Favorite Original Character
    – The character created by an author.

    Favorite Established Relationship
    – Any relationship (familial, friendship, romantic, rivalry, etc) between two Canon or Legends characters that is established or strongly implied in New Canon or Legends material.

    Favorite Original Relationship –
Any relationship (familial, friendship, romantic, rivalry, etc) between OCs or between an established (from either New Canon or Legends) character and an OC. This also includes a relationship between two established characters that does not appear or is not strongly implied in Canon or Legends.

    Genre

Favorite Humor – A story which is comedic in nature by virtue of its characters, situations or dialogue, and whose intention is to provoke a reaction that may range from chuckles to ROFLs.

Favorite Drama - A story that centres around a conflict that is neither physical nor romantic in nature. It may include the protagonist(s) addressing serious issues that impact them on a personal level, or it may be broader issues like a political-drama.

Favorite Angst – A story dealing with sad or tragic topics meant to evoke melancholy emotions in it’s readers.

Favorite Fluff – A story with little to no conflict or antagonistic intent, usually written to give the readers “warm fuzzy feelings” in their hearts.

Favorite Romance - A story that centres around the protagonist discovering, exploring and/or developing a strong romantic emotional bond with another character.

Favorite Action/Adventure – A story in which the characters overcome challenges by means of fast-paced, usually physical, adventurous activity.

The Mods' Fun Categories That Don't Have a Catchy Group Name

Story you think more people should read – An underrated/under-reviewed fic that you think people ought to check out. What makes it underrated/under reviewed is up to you, but if it has a ton of reviews, it probably doesn't fit.

Favorite end of 2018 (November or December) story that developed in 2019 that you should really read - This is an exception to the rules. This fic has to have been started in November or December 2018 (or 2017 for NSWFF) and continued in 2019 (or 2018 for NSWFF); that was maybe overlooked for the past awards due to it’s incompleteness, but really deserves a mention.

Story you just can’t stop thinking about – A story that really stuck with you, or a story that really doesn’t fit anywhere but you think should have a moment of glory

Moment in a fic (or an entire fic) that is now your head-canon – HEAD-CANON ACCEPTED! A detail or storyline that is neither confirmed nor denied by official canon, but makes so much sense that it is now your ‘personal canon’.

Favourite fic that's better than canon - Don't worry, folks. When canon fails you, this is where your fellow fan fiction writers come in. Whether it be fixing the old Legends EU or erasing the story Disney told, this is the fic that made you go: yes, this is actually what happened instead.

Favorite title that made you want to read the fic - It's the title that first caught your eye. You saw it and thought "I want to read that fic!" It's like a great cover on a book that draws you in!

    Storyline Categories

Favorite Continuity Compliant - A story that does not diverge from or contradict the established storyline (New Canon or Legends) in which it is written. Stories that aren’t blatantly AU and aren’t defined as AU by the author in the opening post or the title bar can be assumed to be canon-compliant. (Note: this is the category that used to be called ‘Best Canon’ in previous years.)

Favorite Alternate Universe - A story that diverges from or contradicts the established storyline (New Canon or Legends) in which it is written. This is usually, but not always, indicated by the author in the opening post or the title bar.

Favorite New Canon/Legends Mash-up or Cross-Over - A story that combines explicitly and prominently elements from both the New Canon and Legends continuities; or story that combines explicitly and prominently elements from Star Wars as well as a different fandom or media; or a NSWFF story that combines explicitly and prominently elements from two or more different fandom or media.

    Reviewer

Favorite Reviewer Before – Your favorite reviewer who leaves the most thoughtful/in depth reviews on stories in the Before era.

Favorite Reviewer Saga - Your favorite reviewer who leaves the most thoughtful/in depth reviews on stories in the Saga era.

Favorite Reviewer Beyond - Your favorite reviewer who leaves the most thoughtful/in depth reviews on stories in the Beyond era.

Favorite Reviewer NSWFF - Your favorite reviewer who leaves the most thoughtful/in depth reviews on stories in the NSWFF sub-forum.

    Author

    Favorite Author in Before
    – The author whose work in Before (either Canon or Legends) consistently demonstrates a high degree of skill and creativity in their creation of memorable characters and settings, original plots, interesting themes, and overall depiction of the GFFA.

    Favorite Author in Saga
    – The author whose work in PT and/or OT and/or ST (either Canon or Legends) consistently demonstrates a high degree of skill and creativity in their creation of memorable characters and settings, original plots, interesting themes, and overall depiction of the GFFA.

    Favorite Author in Beyond
    – The author whose work in Beyond (either Canon or Legends) consistently demonstrates a high degree of skill and creativity in their creation of memorable characters and settings, original plots, interesting themes, and overall depiction of the GFFA.

    Favorite Author in NSWFF
    – The author whose work in Non-Star Wars Fanfic consistently demonstrates a high degree of skill and creativity in their creation of memorable characters and settings, original plots, interesting themes, and overall depiction of their chosen fandom(s).

    Favorite New Author
    – The best author who posted his or her first story on the boards within the eligibility dates. This category is not era-specific.

    Most Versatile Author
    – The author whose work, in your opinion, tackles the widest range of aspects of writing fanfic (e.g. multiple eras, multiple genres, multiple writing techniques, etc.) This category is not era-specific.

    Favorite Story YOU Wrote
    - This is an exception to the rules. For this category, tell us YOUR favorite story that YOU wrote! To be eligible to submit in this category, you must have submitted 20 different stories (or authors) for previous categories.
