Given that the nominees will be announced tomorrow, figured it was time to make a thread. In terms of last minute hopes/predictions, it'd be great if Yorgos Lanthimos got included in the Best Director slate.

Are Roma and Buster Scruggs eligible?
If this is the case, I think they'll have several nominations.

I rather hope Alpha get a Cinematography nod. It's one of the most beautifully shot films I've seen this year. I mean, it won't, but it'd be nice.

it's hostless apparently but also they could be trying to get all of the Avengers to host. Roma and Scruggs are eligible, all Netflix movies are cuz they run them in theatres for a few weeks (and Roma and Scruggs had a longer wide release than most). Going to try to watch Green Book tomorrow cuz I think it's in the running for best picture nomination. Also Black Panther may be up for Best Picture which could be great to see a mainstream blockbuster comic book movie get a nomination (the number of best picture nominees was expanded the year after Dark Knight came out to supposedly include more of those types of movies but it never did). Although, personally, if that had to go to any Marvel movie this year, I would have given it to Infinity War. It's basically the giant WWII epic scale films the Academy always nominates except, like, aliens and superheroes. And, y'know, a hellova ending.

Also Spider-Verse is going to win Best Animated. Mark it down. Not just nominated, straight up win.

Not that it's gonna win, but I'm glad that RPO got a nod for visual effects at least.

I don't understand. Didn't Bohemian Rhapsody receive "mixed reviews"? I should totally watch it if it's actually worth it.

I suspect Bohemian Rhapsody is going to wind up on several of those "Top X Confusing Oscar Nominations" lists in like five years.

Also congratulations to Spike Lee for inexplicably managing a career revival after like his entire post-2000 output and the story mode from NBA2Kwhatever that prominently featured monologing ghosts in a basketball sim.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody. Sure it's not without its problems: slow parts, factual inaccuracies, director drama - but I walked out of the film with a smile and I had Queen songs stuck in my head for about a week and a half. I will definitely give it a second watch at some point this year when it's released digitally.

I think the majority of the problems with Bohemian Rhapsody lie with the book it was adapting rather than anything else. However, I don't really have a quibble with the categories its nominated for (since we all know it's really not winning Best PIcture).

I'm surprised Vice got as many nods as it did. I thought that was the one with the mixed; if not mediocre reviews.

If Beale Street Could Talk getting snubbed for Best Picture and Best Director is a travesty.
Going to be super ****ing awkward if he wins Best Director only for Green Book to take Best Picture.

That's another one of those period pieces featuring a dramatized story of the British Monarchy. They seem to come out with a new one every year.

I haven't seen The Favourite or Roma yet and I'll be damned if I'm voluntarily watching another MCU movie, but otherwise that is one weak-ass Best Picture list. BlacKKKlansman was the best of the lot and it wasn't amazing or anything.
