I actually really like both Milk and Frost/Nixon. Slumdog Millionaire is pretty solid too. Benjamin Button is good but I don't really need to see it again.

The best movie of 2008 is still Man on Wire though.

What's really great is that, if Citizen Kane is any indication, in like 60 years the Academy is just going to pretend Brokeback won anyway.

My mistake- I misinterpreted the film's release date, then referenced the nominees for that incorrect year.

I will also say out of all of the Oscar song and dance bits of the last few years, Jackman doing the weird techno song about losing his screener of The Reader is still stuck in my head.

It won the Critics' Choice Award for Best Original Screenplay. That's a pretty DAMN good predictor of what'll win the Oscar. 11 (or 12, depending on how ya count) matches out of 13.

Mary Poppins was the best movie I saw this year and it's barely nominated for anything. Otherwise it would be my answer to "Should Win" for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor (Ben Whishaw, not Miranda actually), Best Score, Best Song, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.

Felicity Jones should have been nominated for her performance as Ruth Bader Ginsburg in On the Basis of Sex. I liked that film. As things stand, I favor Lady Gaga for Best Actress. I hope Christian Bale wins for Best Actor, though I would be satisfied with Bradley Cooper. Mahershala Ali should win for Best Supporting Actor. I favor Amy Adams for Best Supporting Actress.

Oh yeah and Emily Blunt won the SAG for Best Supporting for A Quiet Place but wasn't even nominated for the Oscar so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Every other injustice this year pales to Toni Collette not getting nominated for Hereditary. I mean, that's . . . there are no words.

And there are some big injustices. Ethan Hawke for First Reformed. Beale Street for Best Picture. Brian Tyree Henry for Best Supporting for Beale Street. Viola Davis & Daniel Kaluuya for Widows. Like my jaw literally dropped when I saw no Davis for Widows. That's just unbelievable.

And those are just the ones that actually had a shot. I mean, I'm not even talking about The Rider and Revenge and Annihilation and a host of others that are actually the "best pictures" of the year, by which I mean better than all or most of the nominees.

I actually went to a special seminar with Philippe Petit in NYC a few years after that movie was released. He really is an interesting, down-to-earth person and loves to talk about not just the 1974 stunt on the WTC but his other feats as well.

How does he feel about the Joseph Gordon-Levitt movie?

Well he consulted on set with the movie; so I'd imagine he supported it. Levitt took lessons from Petit himself. I follow Petit's FB page and remember him promoting the film when it was being released.

Annihilation was certainly one of my top 3 movies of the year, along with Mary Poppins Returns and Black Panther.

EDIT: Oh, probably top 4. Hereditary. A Quiet Place. Make it 5 :p
