I thought I'd start a new social thread. Why not? Come to the social thread, where everybody knows your (user-)name.

Want to talk music? Movies? Life? The universe? Everything?

    Let's get started...

I'm a definite starter for this Artoo-Dion. Good call.

I'm going to take you up on your offer and talk about the movie I saw on Thursday, The H8ful 8. It seems to have had mixed to ok reviews and not exceptional BO, but I have to say I really enjoyed it. It's not Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill, but a worthy addition to the QT catalogue. The only bits I thought could have used some editing were the interminable door closing scenes and the pointless and historically inaccurate conversation about New Zealand. It's nice to be mentioned, but...

    Thoughts?

Okay, here goes. How about the completely jarring and unnecessary narration in the third act? Did you see it in 70 mm? Why was it even shot in 70 mm when most of the movie takes place in a room? The whole thing seemed a little indulgent to me, and I think it was more distracting than interesting.

Yeah, true. But the outside bits did look good didn't they? As for the narration, didn't mind it. Unnecessary I agree, but somehow is was ok for a QT flick, just like the unnecessary chapter headings etc. I expect a degree of indulgence. No, sadly no 70mm where I live.

You mean in the last 365 days or this calandar year? Considering it's pretty early in the year, I'm going to have to say Hateful Eight. I just saw The Big Short, which was interesting in a number of ways and I was thoughorly entertained but I believe in showing and not telling. Half of The Big Short was straight lecture.

Edit: Okay, I just read your other post. The worst thing I saw this year was an Indian horror film about an evil game of parchisi called Ludo.

I was choosy about what I saw on the big screen last year, so didn't see anything worse than Mockingjay. However, I did shell out money to watch the DVD of Everly. I don't say this lightly, but not even Salma Hayek could save this one!

Death Proof totally soured me on Tarantino. I think I prefer Rodriguez's style overall anyway.

    I really enjoyed MI:5. I watched Stardust last year--not a 2015 movie, I know--I thought it was really flat and self-consciously quirky.

Death Proof is the Tarantino outlier. It really is a B movie rather than just paying homage to them.

Can we include trailers? Cos I can't say anything I saw in theaters was bad, and there's no way I'm remembering everything I watched otherwise. xDD

Stardust had its moments and for me was elevated simply due to the sheer number of Ritchie veterans. I mean Soap was in it for goodness sake.
