The private sector should have exclusivity to handle launches of satellites and other payloads into space, as well as resupplying the ISS.

But we still need government to blaze the trails.

A major report about how we torture inmates came out a couple of days ago, we repeatedly drone bomb people in third world countries, we've been undergoing a "brain drain" for almost thirty years because we've gutted public education, income inequality is approaching levels of cartoonish absurdism, we can't stop the wars or make the old younger or lower the price of bread, the questions of basic civil rights for citizens are still in play despite decades of struggle, but yeah the biggest problem is that we can't put a rocket on some lifeless hunk of rock to fulfill the arbitrary desires of popular science aficionados.

The lobby to the oil industry which will put us in need of that spaceship off Earth sooner is still going strong among other environmental and sustainability issues, another priority or two.

NASA's budget will not solve any problems as it is too small. Less than 1% of the budget is devoted to NASA. You want to fix Earthly problems? The problem lies within the people elected to office and the corporations they cater to. That's in the space industry too. The ULA doe snto like the upstart Space-x and now they are forced to try and compete.

Also let's not forget our government's policy of using rectal rehydration on people. I think that should be close to the top.

(I am going to milk this topic for all its worth)

The problem with NASA isn't that it's budget is too small or large but that it has no focus. It tries to cater to a wide swath of space exploration, manned or unmanned. We should probably look towards some global agency that will one day send man to Mars. But right now, there are more pressing issues.

They’ve both existed for some time. If there is to be only one thread it should be titled something better than just Space X.

I would suggest combining them and calling it "Space Exploration" and perhaps putting a reminder in the OP that it's for non-astronomy news unless of course people would like to throw that in too.

Still not blending the two space threads? Ok.

Blue Origin made news about a future space station. HERE is the other side, Sierra Space getting billions in funding.

Space exploration wouldn’t need to clash with the generous provision of public services if the Republican Party’s dated anti-government spending philosophy didn’t exist. We could easily do both if there wasn’t a major anti-progress political faction in the country.

ETA: NASA also does a lot more than just space exploration. Its earth observation satellites are central to the understanding of climate change and global ecological change, for example. Without those assets we’d know a lot less about how much we are destroying this place we live on.

Further, humanity does need to become a multi-planetary species to survive, I think. Eventually. It’s fundamentally unsustainable to have all our eggs in one basket. Internal threats from climate change, ecological collapse, pandemics, nuclear weapons, and biological weapons (accidental and deliberate), as well as external threats from massive rocks hurtling through the solar system, could put an end to everything rather quickly. In the very long term, living on more than one planet will likely become important.

But in the meantime, let’s improve our societies so we don’t export crappy philosophies to the stars…
