if we're okay with reopening the year discussion, i would like to humbly suggest 1993, the last year before the attempted murder of baseball. here is the complete list of mlb seasons if people want to look at how it compares to 2019 or browse for other potential year candidates. the two years aren't actually that different, with the two biggest differences predictably being home runs and strikeouts. thoughts?

 

I'm fine having the conversation. I'm not attached to any season, just didn't see any discussion happening.

I have no strong feelings on the specific year, so I can get on board with 1993. I think the only other suggested year was 1976, which would be a pass from me. I can dig the style and the cars (not to mention the Motherboy history), but that is some truly flaccid offense. Even worse HR/9 than 1968 somehow. You have to go all the way back to the Truman administration to find worse HR/9.

I prefer to stick with more recent, because that's what I'm more familiar with.

If you want a ranked-choice ballot from me, it would be all proposed years sorted and ranked in descending order.

 

i just think it makes sense, playing this game with historical players, to play the game in a way that more resembles the way it has mostly been played throughout history. i think we discovered last season that a lot of the all-time greats don't really flourish in the game's 2019 framework, while some of the historical players who did do well weren't really all-time greats at all but had certain statistics that elevated their value in the game's 2019 algorithm. i honestly don't know how much changing the year will actually affect the gameplay, but i think it would be cool to see the game reward balanced approaches to roster building. also mixing it up means we can't lean as heavily on all the data from last season.

 

Should we just put it to a vote? Toss out four concrete options and let plurality rule?

Pre-Modern - 1993
Pre-DH - 1972
Old as Old School Gets - 1885

 

As I said above, this is exactly my ballot, ranked-choice style.

 

I'd go:

Pre-Modern - 1993
Pre-DH - 1972
Modern - 2019
Old as Old School Gets - 1885

 

I would guess all players after 1993 would not be available so I would say 2019 again.

 

My understanding is that anyone up through 2021 is available regardless of the year. They'll just have their performance adapted to the norms of the chosen era.
