    ESP-INTY GAME OF THE WEEK
Brought to you by Great Lakes Brewing Company - real good beer for fake good baseball

    Friday, June 14th
Reseda Free Fallers at Northern Shores Gales of November
    Target Field
    Minneapolis, MN
Partly Cloudy, 65 Degrees, wind blowing out to left at 11 mph

Looking to move their way back up the standings, Northen Shores Gales of November opened a three-game series at home against Reseda Free Fallers, sending Bob Gibson against Hyun-Jin Ryu, a pitcher they traded to Reseda earlier this season.

Gibson was a little shaky to start the game, giving up a seeing-eye single to Kirk Gibson on the first pitch of the game. After he retired Joy Votto, Kirk Gibson stole second, and Bob Gibson walked Tony Lazzeri. Gibson struck out Babe Ruth for the second out, but Mike PIazza doubled, scoring Kirk Gibson, and sending Lazzeri to third. But, Gibson struck out Alan Trammell to end the inning, and limit the damage to just that one run.

And, boy, The Free Fallers probably wished they'd cashed in on that inning, as Gibson settled in from there. He ended up pitching five-and-a-third innings on the night, giving up just that one run, scattering six hits, walking three, and striking out seven.

In the bottom of the second, the Gales of November would get to the task of giving Bob Gibson some run support ... and it would get started thanks to Josh Gibson. Josh Gibson lead off the bottom of the second with a double. Jeff Kent grounded out to short, and Gibson was held at second, and Brooks Robinson flew out to center, giving the inning its second out. But Richie Ashburn delivered, hitting a two-run homer to put the Gales ahead 2-1. ROy Smalley would single, and Bob Gibson would double, but a Rod Carew groundout would end the inning with that 2-1 scoreline still in tact.

And, despite the pop that both of these lineups have, we'd keep that 2-1 scoreline as we entered the sixth inning. Gibson retired Piazza to start the inning, but after two walks - to Trammell and Adrian Beltre - Tom Kelly took no chances, calling on Doug Jones to come on in relief. And, Jones needed just four pitches to provide that relief. A three pitch strikeout of Dusty Baker, and a ground out to the shortstop for Ryu, and that was the inning.

Jones gave up a two-out single to Lazzeri in the seventh, and Kelly brought in Frank Viola. Viola walked Babe Ruth, but got Piazza to ground out, keeping the Gales ahead by that narrowest of margins.

And, it the bottom of the seventh, those margins would expand. Fernando Valenzuela hooked Ryi, calling on Max Scherzer, who gave up a home run to Brooks Robinson with the first pitch he threw, making it 3-1 to the Gales. Richie Ashburn singled, but Viola got a double play off the bat of Smalley, and struck out the pinch hitting Al Kaline to send us to the eighth inning.

Rob Nen worked the eighth, erasing a leadoff single with a double play, before striking out Baker. and, a two-out, solo homer from Jim Rice made it 4-1 as we headed to the top of the ninth.

It looked great for the Gales, as Rob Nen stayed on and retired the pinch hitting Dante Bichette on a fly out, and struck out Kirk Gibson. With just one out left to get, Kelly turned to the normally unshakably reliable Mariano Rivera. And Rivera needed just three pitches to get Joey Votto to hit a flyball to left to end the game ... except Jim Rice dropped the ball, and Votto was on base! In a classic case of over-managing the situation, that was the only batter Rivera faced, as Kelly called upon Joe Nathan, also normally reliable. Nathan walked Lazzeri, and then served up a game-tying, three-run homer to Babe Ruth, making it 4-4, with a Piazza fly out ending the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Valenzuela turned to Mike Marshall, who ... walked Jeff Kent to open the inning. He then got Brooks Robinson to hit into a double play on the first he pitch he saw. But, a single from Ashburn put new life into the inning, only to have it snuffed out by a ground out from Smalley, sending us to extra innings!

Larry Anderson was the choice for the Gales in the tenth, and he worked a quick 1-2-3 inning. Anderson was then let to bat for himself in the bottom of the inning, and Marshall struck him out, before Cam Bedrosian relieved him, and he retired Rod Carew and Ben Zobrist, sending us to the eleventh inning.

Valenzuela sent up Justin Turner as a pinch hitter to open the eleventh, and he singled, then moved to second as Anderson hit Kirk Gibson with a pitch. A walk to Joey Votto loaded the bases, and made you question further the decision to have Anderson bat for himself in the top of the inning.

The next batter up was Tony Lazzeri, who delivered a single to shallow left, scoring Turner, and keeping the bases loaded. Anderson, though, got Ruth to hit into a 3-2-3 double play, and retired PIazza, sending us to the bottom of the eleventh, with the Free Fallers leading for the first time all game.

With the lead, Valenzuela went to noted relief specialist ... *checks notes* ... Al Leiter, and put in Gary Cater at catcher, completing a double switch. Leiter, though, had no issues in this one, getting ground outs to short from Rice and Josh Gibson, and a shallow fly out from Jeff Kent to earn the save, and give his team a wild win in the opening game of the series.

Final Score: Reseda Free Fallers 5, Northern Shores Gales of November 4 (11 Innings)
    Win: Bedrosian (3-0)
    Loss: Anderson (0-1)
    Save: Leiter (2)
Player of the Game: Babe Ruth

    Same teams, new trade

    @tom gets Smoky Joe wood
@a star war gets Luke Appling, 2 Intybucks, and a 20th round pick next year

And, I forgot to mention that tom also sent 5 Intybucks in the previous transaction, which means he literally paid to have someone take Jose Ramirez off his hands, and I can't be held accountable if he's now a cursed franchise forever.
