I pulled a 30 rarity today...but all my guys had color photos, so that pretty much doomed me.

30 is a great score. knowing a lot about 1800's baseball is a bit of a cheat code when it's a grid full of old teams.

    BREAKING NEWS

For fans in two cities, the inevitable has become reality. With the results of games on August 24th, we have our first two mathematical eliminations of the season.

With a record of 45-90, sitting 38 games out in the ALoaSD Division and 31 games out a their closest wildcard spot, Atlanta Autumn have been officially eliminated from postseason contention.

Jim Leyland, Manager of Atlanta Autumn, After Officially Being Eliminated from Playoff Contention:

"Look, I’m not gonna sit here and sugarcoat it for you. We got our butts kicked this season, plain and simple. Nobody wants to be in this position, but the standings don’t lie. We didn’t win enough games, and that’s on all of us—players, coaches, front office, everybody. It ain’t acceptable, and I don’t intend for it to happen again. Now, with that said, I’m damn proud of some of the guys in that clubhouse. Ichiro? I mean, what else can you say? That guy is a machine. He’s out there every night playing his tail off, getting hits when nobody else is, making plays in the field, running the bases like a man possessed. That’s a guy you build around. That’s a guy who’s gonna be here when we turn this thing around. And Mort Cooper—who the hell saw that coming? I mean, listen, when we picked him up, I thought, ‘Okay, maybe he can give us a few decent innings, eat some starts.’ But the way he competed? The way he just kept going out there, giving us a chance to win? That’s the kind of guy you want in a rotation. If we had about three more of him, maybe we wouldn’t be sitting here talking about next year already. So yeah, we got a lot of work to do. We need to pitch better, hit better, field better—hell, be better. But I’ll tell you this: I ain’t throwing in the towel. Not now, not next year, not ever. I’ve been around long enough to know that things can change real quick in this game. So we’re gonna finish these last 27 games like professionals, we’re gonna see what some of these younger guys can do, and we’re gonna start laying the foundation to make damn sure we’re not having this conversation again next year. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need a cigarette."

Joining them officially in Camp Wait for Next Year are the San Diego Surfers, who sit at 46-89, 46 games off the pace in SANDLOT and 30 games back of the closest wildcard spot.

Bruce Bochy, Manager of the San Diego Surfers, After Officially Being Eliminated from Playoff Contention:

"Well, hell, I don’t even know what you want me to say at this point. We’re 30 games out with 27 to play—I guess you could say we got eliminated a while ago, huh? It’s frustrating. I don’t like losing, I don’t tolerate losing, and I damn sure don’t want to be standing here talking about next year when we’ve still got a month of baseball left. But that’s where we are, and we’ve got to own it. Look, Babe Herman? The guy’s been a bright spot. He’s gone out there every day and put together a hell of a season at the plate. Sixteen homers, seventy driven in, hitting the ball to all fields, giving us good at-bats when some of these other guys—well, let’s just say they could’ve used a little more of whatever Babe’s been drinking. He’s a guy we can build around, and I know he’s gonna show up to camp next year ready to roll."

"Obviously, we made some tough moves, trading Rogers and George. Those are great players, but this is about the long haul. We brought in some high-end draft capital—we’ve got first-rounders from the pilots and Game of Throws next year. Those picks? Those are how you build a team that doesn’t just make the playoffs but stays in the hunt every damn year. It stings right now, sure, but we didn’t want to sit on our hands and pretend this was working. We needed to take a hard look at who we are and where we’re going. Now it’s on us to nail those picks and get this thing turned around."

"And as for pitching… I mean, look, at some point, you’ve got to ask yourself what the hell we’re doing here. I’m not gonna name names—okay, maybe I am—but when you’re supposed to be our guy, our *ace*, and you’re out there racking up L’s like they’re going out of style? I mean, Addie, buddy, what are we doing here? Are you trying to get to 3-16? Is that the goal? Is that the "bottom line" you're striving for? ‘Cause I’ve never seen a guy work so damn hard to land on that number. You want to be the man, you’ve got to be the man. And right now, we got a whole lot of question marks on that front. But hey, we’ve got 27 games left, and I expect these guys to go out and play with some damn pride. I don’t care what the standings say—we’re still professionals, and we’re still building something here. So we’ll see who wants to be a part of this thing next year and who doesn’t. And if you don’t? Well, I’ll be happy to help you pack your bags."

FODEUSS GAME SERIES OF THE WEEK
Brought to you by RIP Bags Fly Free with Southwest Airlines

Sithi of Osten Ard at Amazings

No series figures to be as impactful on the Pennant Chase as these three games, so we thought instead of trying to find one game this week to highlight, we'd give you a little bit about all three games in this series.

    Game 1: Saturday, August 25th, 1990
    1:05 PM Eastern
69 Degrees (nice), Cloudy, with wind blowing right to left at 13 mph
    40,678 in attendance.

This game could be told in basically three stories. The first of those happens in the very first at bat of the game.

Facing a 1-1 count, Billy Hamilton sent what looked like a routine groundball to Amazings second baseman Joe Morgan. Morgan tossed the ball to first for the first out of the game, throwing from his knees. But, he didn't get up from those knees, and fell to the ground afterwards, with Amazings medical team coming out to look at him, and ultimately deciding to send in Dickie Thon to replace him for the remainder of the game. A Joe Sewell ground out and a Hugh Duffy strikeout left us scoreless after that dramatic first inning.

The next part of our story comes in the top of the second inning. That's a story that begins with a leadoff double for Stan Musial. A walk to Hal Trosky followed, and a sharp line drive from Sam Thmopson was trouble, but not for Amazings, as Frank Thomas made a spectacular play, grabbing the line drive and stepping on the bag to double off Trosky, who was helpless. Jose Fernandez uncorked a wild pitch to move Musial to third, and Tim McCarver uncorked on a 2-2 offering from Fernandez for a two-run homer and the first runs of the game. A walk to Ben Zobrist and a double from Rico Petrocelli put runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs, and a Billy Hamilton single brought them both home. Hamilton stole second, but Joe Sewell grounded out, and we were at 4-0 to the visitors heading into the bottom of the second.

Unfortunately for the home team, the third story in this game comes in the person of one Charles Carlson "C.C." Sabathia. And his story was equal parts dominance and frustration for Amazings. Sabathia would exit with one out in the ninth, giving up zero runs on 9 hits, with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. Amazings would tally a whopping 21 LOB in the box score, lead by 5 each from Frank Thomas and Babe Ruth.

All of that added up to a comfortable game one win for Sithi.

Final Score: Sithi of Osten Ard 5, Amazings 0
    Win: Sabathia (14-8)
    Loss: Fernandez (11-8)
Player of the Game: C.C. Sabathia

    Game 2: Sunday, August 26th, 1990
    7:35 PM Eastern
60 Degrees, Clear Skies, with wind blowing out to left at 12 mph
    39,140 in attendance.

Trying to erase the memories of the first game in this series, Amazings would be looking for something terrific in this one.

They'd get a terrific start in the bottom of the first inning.

Smoky Joe Wood would strike out Ty Cobb to open that half of the inning, but give up a one-out single to Wee Willie Keeler. After a fly out from the bat of Frank Thomas, Wood had a chance to escape the inning, but Babe Ruth singled, and Keeler moved to third. Biz Mackey then connected on the first pitch Wood offered him, serving up a three-run homer to put Amazings ahead early. Wade Boggs would single, but Dickie Thon would strikeout, and that would be the end of the first inning.

In the second, Hal Trosky would get one back for the visitors, hitting a solo homer with one out off Tom Seaver.

However, that would be the only blemish on the day for the Seaver who was, in fact, Terrific, as he had given up that one run on just two hits ...

... as we headed into the ninth inning, where Amazings held a 4-1 lead into the inning thanks to an RBI single from Cobb in the fourth inning.

In the ninth, Seaver got a terrific start to the inning, getting a ground out from Tim McCarver. But, a single Billy Hamilton and a walk to Joe Sewell put the tying run at the plate in the person of Stan Musial, and sent Davey Johnson to the bullpen, summoning Sid Fernandez to try to save this one.

And, let me tell you, just about every Amazings fan in Queens thought that was a terrible mistake when Stan Musial connected on a 1-1 offering from Fernandez and sent it high and deep to center field, only to exhale when Ty Cobb made the catch on the warning track for the second out of the inning. Fernandez would make sure the last batter of the game - Big Sam Thompson - did not have as much drama in his at-bat, striking him out on three pitches to give this one to Amazings.

Final Score: Amazings 4, Sithi of Osten Ard 1
    Win: Seaver (10-9)
    Loss: Wood (12-7)
    Save: Fernandez (4)
Player of the Game: Tom Seaver

    Game 3: Monday, August 27th, 1990
    7:05 PM Eastern
69 Degrees (nice), Clear Skies, with wind blowing in from right at 13 mph
    33,687 in attendance.

Bob Gibson vs. Doc Gooden was everything you could have asked for in a pitching duel for this rubber match.

Bob Gibson vs. Doc Gooden was everything you could have asked for for two teams in their final regular season meeting who are head-to-head for the final playoff spot.

Bob Gibson vs. Doc Gooden was truly an instant classic.

Gooden got it going by striking out Billy Hamilton to start the top of the first, and striking out Hugh Duffy to end the top of the first. There was a single - and caught stealing - by Joe Sewell in between. Gibson countered with a 1-2-3 inning, striking out Frank Thomas to end it.

It was a 1-2-3 top of the second for the Gooden, and a pair of one out singles from Biz Mackey and Wade Boggs in the bottom of the second made Gibson sweat, but a strikeout of Joe Cronin - on three pitches - ended the inning with another goose egg on the scoreboard.

A Ben Zobrist one-out double put a Sithi in scoring position for the first time in the game, but Jose Ramirez struck out after Zobrist stole third, and Hamilton couldn't bring him home. And then in the bottom of the third, Sithi tried really hard to beat themselves.

First, Dickie Thon opened the inning by striking out, only to reach first on a passed ball. Then, after a Ty Cobb flyout, Ramirez booted a groundball that could have been an inning-ending double play, but instead resulted in two on with one out. Gibson didn't let his defense have any more chances to let him down this inning, striking out Frank Thomas and Babe Ruth, and through three complete innings, it was still a 0-0 ballgame.

Seven pitches and two strikeouts added up to another 1-2-3 for Gooden in the top of the fourth, and nine pitches - but no strikeouts - from Gibson countered with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth. A Tim McCarver strikeout ended another 1-2-3 for Gooden in his half of the fifth, and a two-out single from Ty Cobb stopped the streak of retired batters, but didn't bring in a run as we were still looking for the first run of the game as we headed to the sixth inning.

Gooden would strike out Hamilton to end another 1-2-3 inning in his half of the sixth, and Gibson would work around a leadoff walk of Thomas to put up another zero.

Would the seventh inning bring our first run? Not for Sithi, as a Hugh Duffy strikeout was in the middle of another 1-2-3 inning for Gooden. And, not for Amazings as a two-out Dickie Thon single wasn't capitalized upon by Cobb.

The top of the eighth brought another 1-2-3 for Gooden, and a strikeout of Ruth ended another 1-2-3 for Gibson sending us to the bottom of the ninth, and still with nothing but zeroes on the scoreboard.

Gooden issued a walk to Zobrist to open the inning, and Sithi decided to go small ball, with Ramirez laying down a sacrifice bunt ... only Ramirez was hustling down the line, and just beat the throw to reach first as well. After a balk by Gooden, they opted to load the bases by intentionally walking Hamilton, and with the bases loaded and nobody out, Davey Johnson decided to go to Sid Fernandez to try to get out of the jam and keep it scoreless. Fernandez induced a shallow fly ball from Cesar Cedeno for the important first out of the inning. With the infield at double play depth and the crowd electric, Hugh Duffy laced a ground ball just between Thon and Thomas for an RBI single. Zobrist came around to score the first run of the game, and when Charlie Blackwell skied his throw to the plate (why he was throwing to the plate instead of a cutoff man was anyone's guess), Ramirez scored as well. Stan Musial was given an intentional walk to reload the bases, and a shallow fly out from Trosky was the second out of the inning. Could Sithi find another insurance run? They could not, as Fernandez struck out Thompson, sending us to the bottom of the ninth with Amazings down 2-0.

Al Lopez decided to use a defensive substitution, sending in Rico Petrocelli at shortstop. The very first batter of the inning - Biz Mackey - sent a pop up to Petrocelli, which he fielded with no issue for the first out of the inning. The second batter of the inning - Wade Boggs - sent a groundball to Petrocelli, but he had no issues fielding it cleanly and sending it to Thomas for the second out. That left Fred Lynn to step in, and he laced a line drive right down the first base line ... caught by Trosky to end the game.

Gooden deserved better than a loss after giving up just three hits in 8 innings of work, but Gibson was masterful striking out 7, walking one, and giving up just four hits in the complete game shutout.

And with that, Sithi take the game and the series, which could prove decisive when the final standings come out in just another 24 games.

Final: Sithi of Osten Ard 2, Amazings 1
    Win: Gibson (16-7)
    Loss: Gooden (13-12)
Player of the Game: Bob Gibson
