Game of Throws at Every City Bandwagoners

Needing a win and some help, Every City Bandwagoners sent Roger Clemens to the mound.

And the Rocket gave Judge Judy perhaps his best start of the season.

He tossed an absolute gem - a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits, walking three and striking out ten, keeping the Bandwagoners alive until the final day.

Mickey Mantle homered in the first, giving Clemens the only run support he would need with that early 1-0 lead.

Bustey Posey added a three-run homer in the fourth, and Larry Walker a three-run homer in the seventh as the Bandwagoners left no doubt in this one.

Player of the Game, Brought to you by taking away Judge Judy's need for bullpen management: Roger Clemens
Final: Bandwagoners 9, Kings of the North 0
    Win: Clemens (14-10)
    Loss: Verlander (4-12)

Incheon Hash Slingers at Sudden Valley Cornballers

Officially eliminated from contention, Sudden Valley Cornballers came out loose in this one, and took an early lead.

Billy Hamilton singled to lead off the first, stole second, and moved to third on a bad throw. Ed Delahanty singled to score Hamilton, but he was caught stealing. That lead to a Babe Ruth solo homer, a single from Rogers Hornsby, a double from Roger Bresnahan, and a quick 3-0 lead for the Cornballers.

Al Simmons homered to leadoff the third, cutting the lead to 3-1, and Lou Boudreau got a two-out, RBI single in the fourth, cutting the lead to 3-2.

Then, with two outs in the sixth, MVP Candidate Kenny Lofton got a two-out, RBI single and we were tied at three.

And We'd stay tied at three heading into the ninth. Sudden Valley Cornballers called on Aroldis Chapman in the top of the ninth, and he got a 1-2-3 inning to send it tied to the bottom of the ninth.

Sean Doolittle was called upon, and gave up a leadoff single to Billy Hamilton. Ed Delahanty singled to moved to Hamilton to third, and Sam Thompson singled to left, letting Hamilton easily score, lifting heels' spirits and walking it off for a feel-good win.

Player of the Game, brought to you by moral victories: Sam Thompson
    Final: Cornballers 4, Slingers 3
    Win: Chapman (7-4)
    Loss: Doolittle (5-3)

    ASSES at Performance Enhancers

Both teams entered the game knowing they had a small margin of error to work with, but both wanting the win in this one to better avoid calamity.

Silver King and Rube Waddell locked horns and delivered a tight game, with King taking a one-hit shutout into the seventh, and Waddell a three-hit shutout.

In the top of the seventh, the ASSES would finally get to Waddell.

Troy Tulowitzki singled to open the inning, and moved to third as the pinch-hitting Bill Joyce singled. Cesar Cedeno tripled, scoring both, and Jon Stewart had the quick hook, sending out Blake Treinen for Wadell.

Treinen struck out King Kelly, got a flyout from Manny Ramirez, and intentionally walked Shane Spencer. Mark Loretta delivered the two-out single, scoring Cedeno, before Treinen struck out Walt Bond to end the inning.

The ASSES would then turn to their bullpen to try to lock down a game.

Koji Uehara got the call in the seventh ... and turned in a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.

Sergio Romo got the call in the eighth ... and turned in a 1-2-3 inning with one strikeout.

*checks notes* ... Jake Northrop got the call in the ninth ... and turned in a 1-2-3 inning on just eight pitches, leaving Jon Stewart to wonder how his team of mashers got one ***damn hit and now have their backs against the wall, with one game to play.

Player of the Game, Brought to you by Intytober Pitching Duels: Silver King
    Final: ASSES 4, Enhancers 0
    Win: King (18-7)
    Loss: Waddell (7-10)

I'll allow line-up/pitching changes if so desired for the final game. I'm going to sim the final three of tom/lloyd before I sim your final games, so you've got until @LloydChristmas posts lineups to make any changes.

Also, one correction. dp has clinched the H2H tiebreaker against Pointy, and thus is guaranteed the #3 seed.

acuna matata (22-104) @ reseda free fallers (56-70)

two teams playing out the string and chanting the mantra "there's always next year" met at dodger stadium for the the first game of a 6 games set. acuna matata sent smoky joe wood to the hill, while the free fallers would counter with bob feller.

feller wasn't bad for reseda, but this game would belong to smoky joe.

in the top of the 2nd joe torre would double home hank aaron and then later score on a sacrifice fly by ozzie albies, and that would be all the support that wood would need.

joe tossed a complete game shutout, allowing only 5 hits while walking two and striking out 3 as the matatas cruised to victory. feller also tossed a complete game, but allowed 10 hits and 6 earned runs over the course of his 9 innings of work. free fallers manager marlins man had clearly already moved on to more pressing and exciting sporting events as feller was left out there to throw 141 pitches.

goose goslin smacked a 2-run homer in the 5th that provided matata and wood with a little insurance.

player of the game, brought to you by hoping your real team does better: smoky joe wood

final: Matata 6, Free Fallers 0
    win: wood (8-8)
    loss: feller (6-8)

acuna matata (23-104) @ reseda free fallers (56-71)

ronald acuna led off the game with a home run off of luis tiant. later in the 1st inning brian mccann launched a grand slam that made it 5-0 before the fallers even had a chance to bat, and it was clear that it would be another one of those days for reseda.

nolan ryan would make the most of the support, though with 8 walks and 12 strikeouts it would take him an incredible 161 pitches to get through the complete game victory. apparently matata manager brian snitker knew what he was doing, or possibly was just asleep.

but no matter, willie mccovey, ozzie albies and joe cronin would all also homer for the matatas as they battered tiant and the free fallers bullpen and quickly turned this one into an old fashioned bludgeoning.

player of the game, brought to you by hoping your real team does better: nolan ryan

final: Matata 13, Free Fallers 3
    win: ryan (3-20)
    loss: tiant (6-14)

    thursday, intytober 16th
acuna matata (24-104) @ reseda free fallers (56-72)

we would finally get an excellent game in this series, as the matata's dallas keuchel took on the fallers' mike scott in the final game before scene shifted to atlanta.

this time it would be the fallers who got on the board first when nomar garciaparra singled home joe morgan in the bottom of the 2nd. then willie stargell would homer in the bottom of the 3rd and it was 2-0 reseda.

but the matatas would strike back. an acuna home run leading off the top of the 4th would cut the lead in half, then joe torre would single home willie mccovey in the top of the 5th and the game was tied at 2.

willie mays then put the fallers back on top in the bottom of the frame, lining a solo homer into the seats down the leftfield line.

unfortunately for reseda it would be the last time they'd lead in this one. a hank aaron sac fly in the 6th would again tie the game, and then in the 8th matata would rally. with the game still tied at 3, goose goslin led off the inning with a double. then after strike outs by hank aaron and joe torre, sandwiched around a willie mccovey walk, brian mccann would deliver a clutch hit, blooping a single into center that brought goslin home and broke the tie. scranton's finest was then lifted for jesse orosco, but ozzie albies would deliver another single, this time scoring mccovey with what would prove to be an important insurance run.

that's because the fallers would get one back in the bottom of the frame, as willie mays scored on a gary carter fielder's choice. but from there keuchel would strike out jim thome and joe morgan to escape the frame. and then in the 9th he'd retire the side 1-2-3, completing matata's 3rd complete game victory in as many days.

player of the game, brought to you by hoping your real team does better: dallas keuchel

final: Matata 5, Free Fallers 4
    win: keuchel (3-16)
    loss: scott (10-13)

    friday, intytober 17th
reseda free fallers (56-73) @ acuna matata (25-104)

as the scene shifted to truist park the free fallers would finally get a measure of revenge for the first three games of the series.

they would send sandy koufax to the mound, and koufax would dominate. the matatas countered with catfish hunter, and hunter would struggle mightily.

willie mays and jose canseco went back to back in the top of the third to stake the fallers to the early lead. that's all the support that koufax would need, but in the top of the 8th reseda would really blow the game wide open, erupting for a 6 run rally that put matata away once and for all.

mays would add a 2nd home run in the top of the 9th, but the story of the game was koufax. sandy tossed a complete game 7-hit shutout, striking out 10 while walking only 2, and finally giving reseda something to feel good about in this series. they'd look to build on this one in hopes of finishing the season strong.

player of the game, brought to you by at least winning more games than the rohirrim: sandy koufax

final: Free Fallers 10, Matata 0
    win: koufax (11-11)
    loss: hunter (5-18)

    saturday, intytober 18th
reseda free fallers (57-73) @ acuna matata (25-105)

in the penultimate game of the season the reseda free fallers would once again crush the matatas, taking out all of their frustrations on acuna starting pitcher zack greinke.

joe morgan hit two home runs and drove in 5, and jose canseco and corey seager each also homered as this one was never in doubt.

dazzy vance would cruise to the victory for reseda, allowing 8 hits and only 2 runs over the course of 8 innings of work, while striking out ten. that's 20 k's over the course of two days for reseda starting pitchers for those of you who are scoring at home.

greinke's line on the other hand was not pretty, 7 and a third innings, 8 hits, 5 walks, 3 homers, and 9 earned runs allowed.

but for both teams the season was mercifully almost over.

player of the game, brought to you by at least winning more games than the rohirrim: joe morgan

final: Free Fallers 13, Matata 2
    win: vance (5-7)
    loss: greinke (7-12)

    sunday, intytober 19th
reseda free fallers (58-73) @ acuna matata (25-106)

the matatas would again send smoky joe wood to the mound in this one, looking for a repeat of his performance in the first game of the series. while the free fallers, their manager nowhere to be found, would somehow call on mike scott, pitching on only 2 days rest.

thsi strategy would predictably backfire, as the matatas jumped out to an early lead. hank aaron smacked a 2-run homer in the bottom of the first and then wood helped his own cause with an rbi double in the bottom of the 2nd that made it 3-0.

mike piazza would get one back for reseda in the top of the 5th with an rbi single, but the matatas would stretch the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the frame on back to back rbi hits by joe cronin and goose goslin.

a 3-run homer by ozzie albies in the bottom of the 8th made it 8-1, and then in the 9th inning of the final game of the season acuna matata would hang on for dear life.

wood started the inning, looking for his second complete game of the series, but he was clearly out of gas. he gave up a leadoff single to corey seager, then after striking out pinch hitting duke snider, he walked matt holiday, then gave up an rbi single to willie mays and an rbi fielder's choice to jose canseco. it was now 8-3 but the fallers were down to their final out of the season. snitker stuck with wood, or possibly was still sleeping. wood hit piazza with a pitch, then he walked jim thome to load the bases. joe morgan then delivered a 2-run single that cut the lead to 8-5 and finally woke up brian snitker. snitker called on j.j. putz, looking for one more out. and putz would deliver in dramatic fashion, striking out chipper jones on three pitches, saving one final win for the matatas and ending a miserable season on a positive note.

player of the game, brought to you by at least winning more games than the rohirrim: ozzie albies

final: Matata 8, Free Fallers 5
    win: wood (9-8)
    loss: scott (10-14)
    save: putz (2)

records at the end of the season:

    reseda free fallers: 58-74
    acuna matata: 26-106

I never should've traded for Dunston. We were doing fine, but then I had to go and smear the karmic stink of a short-seasoner all over us. We... no, I deserve this. Next year, boys.

At the risk of spreading our karmic stink, LET'S GO, BANDWAGONERS! And I guess by extension, let's go ASSES for one game I suppose whatever. And then after that they can fall into a ditch filled with used diapers and hypodermics.

A Shaq of Their Own at stone temple seattle pilots

The stakes were clear, after A Shaq of Their Own swept the opening three games of the series. The first team to win two games in Seattle would take the #1 seed and home field throughout the playoffs.

And, the opening game in Seattle would be a heavyweight fight, with punches and counterpunches throughout.

A Shaq of Their Own struck first, with two runs in the top of the first. A sac fly from George Sisler drew first blood, and an RBI single from Wee Willie Keeler scored a second run, before Keeler was thrown out stealing second to send the inning.

In the bottom of the first, stone temple countered, with two on and two out, Oscar Gamble tripled to tie the score at tie.

Then, in the top of the third with his dad on first base, Ken Griffey Jr. homered to center, absolutely crushing one like it was part of his video game commercial, to put the pilots up 4-2.

It would only take until the fifth for the Big Dieselers to counter, with Keeler again coming through with two outs, singling to score Ted Williams and George Sisler, tying the game back up at four.

Hanley Ramirez got an RBI double in the sixth, and we'd have that 5-4 score heading into the ninth.

The normally reliable Eric Gagne took the mound, and the first thing he did was hit Ted Williams with a pitch. George Sisler hit into a fielder's choice, and then stole second, and it was Keeler again - with his fourth RBI of the game - getting the one-out single to score Sisler, before Gagne got Arky Vaughan to hit into the rally-killing, inning-ending double play.

Already with one-and-a-third innings of relief, Shaq-as-Barnes-as-Dugan stuck with Hong-Chi Kuo in the ninth. He walked the pinch hitting Edgar Martinez, who was replaced on the basepaths by Willie McGee. S-B-D went to Doc White, but McGee stole second, and White hit Nap Lajoie on the arm. White hit Griffey Sr. to load the bases, and got a 1-2 ground out from Griffey Jr. With the bases loaded, one out, and the score tied, White faced Jocko Milligan ... who singled to bring home Lajoie, and give the pilots the first game of the series, putting them one win from clinching from the top seed.

Player of the Game, brought to you by Tyson-Holyfield replays: Wee Willie Keeler
    Final: pilots 6, Shaq 5
    Win: Gagne (1-1)
    Loss: Kuo (5-4)

A Shaq of Their Own at stone temple seattle pilots

The Pedro Martinez-Addie Joss rematch looked nothing like the first game of the series.

Except that Martinez lost and Joss won.

A Shaq of Their Own hit Martinez early and often, knocking him out in the sixth inning, and ending his contention for the Cy Young.

Ted Williams homered off Martinez in the first, Jack Clements added an RBI ground out in the second, and the Big Dieselers scored three times in the third - from the bats of Williams, Wee Willie Keeler, and and Tris Speaker - to give Joss an early 5-0 lead.

Jocko Milligan pulled one back for stone temple seattle pilots in the third, but A Shaq of Their Own knocked Pedro out in the sixth.

Tris Speaker got a one-out single, and Jack Clements singled to move to him to third. Joss doubled to score Speaker, John McGraw singled to score Clements, and Shoeless Joe Jackson was the last batter to face Martinez, singling to score Joss.

Martinez' final line was five-and-one-third inning pitched, eight runs allowed on fourteen hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Joss would finish with the complete game, allowing four runs (three earned) on twelve hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Tris Speaker had four hits, and McGraw, Williams, and Keeler each drove in a pair of runs.

Player of the Game, Brought to you by a targeted campaign to get Juliet to vote for you for Cy Young: Addie Joss
    Final: Shaq 11, pilots 4
    Win: Joss (26-6)
    Loss: Martinez (20-9)

The Race for Home Field Advantage ...

    1. A Shaq of Their Own 88 - 43 .672
