After reading Akaria's outstanding revelations I could not help but think this thread was needed. I suspect this thread can become a very heated and passionate debate but please shy away from personal attacks and hate-mongering. Now as a society we have a lot of issues... but there is one that I believe needs to be addressed before we can grow as a whole.

People need to take responsibility for their actions.

I do not say this lightly. Our society is so focused on who is to blame they lose sight of trying to fix the underlying problems that exist. Just this morning I saw a news clip of a woman who is suing a Casino for her gambling addiction. The sad part is she'll probably win. By not taking responsibility for her own actions she tries to shift the blame to someone else. Thousands of examples of this malady exist... we have all heard of the McDonald?s coffee incident... and I for one think this is ridiculous and is clogging up our court system with a lot of needless, wasteful litigation.

Now for the hard part... I can see the problem but the remedy is beyond my scope to grasp. To me it seems like a common sense thing that just needs to be cut out; however, like everything it's just not that simple. So to my fellow Fan Forcers, "How would you get people to take responsibility for their actions?"

You bring up a very good topic, Lodreh, and I agree totally with you. I think the first way to stop this insanity of blame is to stop the rewards. What I mean is, your casino example, dont reward this woman for being an addict. If common sense were to prevail a few times in the courtroom, maybe this foolishness would too. I think we saw a bit of that here locally when Andre Edwards was found guilty of first degree murder for killing that young girl and leaving her baby to die. He tried to blame his "abusive background, and his alcohol/drug addiciton" as an excuse. So I guess what his defense was saying is that since the baby lived, because of what HE has been through(nightmares of a monster hitting Mommy) its perfectly alright if HE goes out a becomes a killer. Thankfully, the jury saw through this, and it looks like justice will be served.

You should elect me as your benevolent dictator. Other than that, it is my understanding that there are laws in place to punish people for wasting the court's time with frivolous lawsuits. Maybe if the courts were to be more zealous in utilizing these laws it would help.

NOOOOOOOO! Eddie-wan, you know not what you do!

Seriously though, I know exactly what you are talking about with the guy who killed the girl and left her baby to die. If I could, I would take him out in a back alley and no one would ever have to bother with him again. I dont see that as wrong, because I see scum like that as many notches below a germ that should be exterminated. That might be a bit course, but thats how I feel. If that had been my family, god forbid, I would pay whatever it took to get him and me locked in a room for 30 minutes, and I would take him apart bone by bone. People need to start realizing that scum like this DO NOT DESERVE to have ANY rights whatsoever. Maybe we should start hanging this human garbage in public, and give them all a message.

With everything that goes on in the world this day and time its very easy to find something to whine and complain about. But my question is this: Can we really get things changed by whining and complaining? Dont get me wrong a lot of things tick me off very much. But whinning and complaining solves nothing as far as I am concerned. We are all here for just a little while anyway, so instead of complain about each other we all should learn to get along with each other. Well, cept maybe Joe-da, Kidding.

Seems to work for the whiners and complainers. Just look at all of the stupid signs and legal disclaimers all over the place. "Our coffee is served hot." Wow, what a novel concept.

I like coffee, just not hot coffee in my lap. But as long as they have a sign up reminding me its hot, I will take extra care not to spill it on my nether regions.

I see what you are saying, Yoda, and you make a good point. Its just there are times when some of us get really frustrated with things. For example, that guy who killed that lady, and left the baby to die, GOT LIFE. The blasted jury could NOT agree to the death penalty. I was floored when I heard it, but not shocked. It seems our justice system is going down the tubes, my friends. :(

My high school civics teacher (who btw was pro-capital punishment) told us that it costs the system more to kill an inmate than keep them for life. My response: "Rope is pretty cheap at the hardware store."

Let's use an idea from China here... a single shot in the back of the head and charge his family for the cost of the bullet.

I say lets beat him with a thirty pound tire iron until he can barely move. Than we tie him up and leave him in the middle of a freshly disced field on the hottest day of the summer until he dies a slow painfull death. Sound rough? Thats what he did to that girl and her baby.(exept for the freshly disced field part.)
