I've been looking forward to that one, and I'm not someone who goes to see a lot of movies. What did you think of it? Feel free to spoil away with spoiler code, I'll read it. :p

Over all a great film, based on the previews alone I described it to family as basically being "Saving Private Ryan in WWI"
It felt a little short, and I predicted the big twist early on, but the action was great and there were certainly some powerfully emotional moments.

If you've seen the previews you know the premise of the film, The Germans have done a strategic retreat, and a British battalion is planning on following them thinking they have them on the run. They are walking into a trap, but since the enemy cut the phone lines they need to send a physical courier to deliver the message.

They settle on a man they know has a brother serving as a Lieutenant (There's just something about the way the Brits say Leftenant that makes me grin.:p), in the battalion. He is allowed to take only one soldier along, since the higher ups believe that too big of a group would just slow him down. The two of them have some fun quips, and are close friends, we get a bit of his backstory, and they have a couple clashes but they stick even when offered the opportunity to turn around, so you know where this is going...

The big event happens far sooner in the film than I expected, and the aftermath is kind of ruined by a caravan of allies being just around the corner. I do encourage people to see it, so I'd rather not spell out exactly what happens, though if you think about it from a cinematic perspective, and assume that they will meet up with his brother, all you need to do is ask yourself which one would have the more emotional impact in order to realize how this will go.

The war is shown to be brutal for both sides, and the humanity of the individual soldiers is in the forefront. We see corpses on the field of battle, the dirt of the trenches, and the more animalistic part of human nature. The protagonists aren't exactly eager to kill any German's they come across, especially in close quarters. Still, they aren't left many options because this is a war and the enemy will kill them if given the chance.
There's something poetic about the way it's done, and the emotions were very real at some points.
Over a hundred years after the fact, and I think it was a remarkable tribute to the men who served.

I taught a lesson on WWI during my time student teaching last fall, and this film could certainly be used in a lesson on trench warfare at some point in the future.

Over a hundred years later, it was an excellent tribute to those that fought and died on the fields of battle.:)

I'm happy you enjoyed it @Bardan_Jusik.
One or two nitpicks aside it was a great film.

I'm also happy to have another film about WWI, it feels like there is so much attention on the sequel the original tends to get overlooked in our culture to some extent.:p
