    That was a great weekend.

Looking ahead: The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey

Can it take out Avengers and become the number one movie of 2012?

    The odds: not good

    Analysis:

The formula for Hobbit: (incredible goodwill for Jackson's middle earth movies and vast global audience + great marketing + 10 years of anticipation + ticket price inflation + 3D movie premium - 10 years of U.S. theater audience erosion + new family audience for one of the great children's classics and one of the best-selling novels of all time) x movie quality multiplier = global Hobbit box office.

It's unlikely the Hobbit will beat the Avengers domestic box office, but I wouldn't be surprised if it beat the foreign box office.

If Unexpected Journey makes 40% more than ROTK's domestic box office, it would hit something like $525 million. And if its domestic/foreign box office split is the same as ROTK's, then it will make $1.54 billion worldwide, edging out Avengers in global box office total and foreign box office, becoming the third movie in history to make more than $1 billion in non-U.S. box office.
