“Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness.”*

    Narrator:

    The Clone Wars rages on!
The neverending conflict had reached its third year!
The Outer Rim under siege by the nefarious forces of the Separatists!
At the end of the conflict on the war-torn industrial planet Xinaghar, the Republic forces lead by Jedi Master Ki-Adi Mundi discovered vital documents which attracted the attention of Lieutenant Commander Krennic from the Strategic Advisory Cell.
The Jedi were pushed away and now they are returning to the Temple for a debrief…

    Location: Jedi Temple, Coruscant
    02:34 AM Local Time

The shuttle landed late during the night. Coruscant was lit as usual, it was the city that never slept. Every minute a ship arrived and departed. It was a never ending cycle. That was why the landing of the shuttle went fairly unnoticed, aside of the authorities and the Jedi Temple. There were only two passengers inside. The Cerean Jedi Master Ki-Adi Mundi and the Arkanian Jedi Knight Cera Tan. They were ordered to get back to the Temple in advance to the returning forces from the Xinaghar campaign.

They were greeted by a sole figure. Mace Windu. Master Mundi and him greeted each other as equals, and Cera bowed in deference. “We will talk inside, Master Yoda is waiting for us.” the dark skinned Jedi said. The other two just nodded and followed him inside. The Temple felt half-deserted. A lot of the Jedi were spread around the Galaxy. Many of them were killed. The rest, mostly Padawans or too old to fight, were who remained on Coruscant. Most of them fast asleep or meditating.

There were some Clones, who were stationed at the Temple. Early in the war Cera Tan would have felt uneasy by all of this. The Jedi were keepers of the peace… not soldiers. But now… now she was not entirely sure. She chased away those thoughts. She was tired enough and did not want to get bogged down by philosophical and ethical mental arguments. Besides she was angry… angry and hurt. There was not enough time to grieve for her Padawan Ro’oland who was killed by the Mandalorians that the CIS General, the Togorian Sheerah, employed.

The trio entered one of the classrooms, which was turned into a briefing room. Another unwelcome change. There they were met by the diminutive figure of the Jedi Grand Master. His presence filling the room, despite his size. He radiated wisdom, calmness and… goodness. It was as if he was not touched by the encroaching darkness. He was the kind grandfather who will listen to you, comfort you and offer you advice.

“Master Mundi, Knight Tan, to see you well, my heart warms.” Yoda said.

    The trio bowed to him.

“It is as the Force wills it.” Ki-Adi said.

Yoda nodded and gestured that they sit “Sorry am I to bring you here immediately.” he smiled “Troubled we are, by what you discovered.”

So that was the reason they were rushed back. Back on Xinaghar, in the now captured droid factories, the Republic Intelligence found documents, inventory lists and production orders for certain equipment. Normally it would not have attracted so much attention, but then a strange man arrived, claiming that he was from the Republic Strategic Advisory Cell, along with some strange officers. They managed to push the Jedi away from the investigation, claiming that it was Top Secret and that he was tasked by the Chancellor himself.

“We have petitioned the Chancellor’s office to release the information to us, but as you can deduce, they are stonewalling us with bureaucratic nonsense.” it was Mace Windu’s turn to speak.

“Yes, I managed to read some of the captured documents...” Ki-Adi started “They mentioned a project called Unthinkable. They were using Xinaghar’s sprawling industrial infrastructure to produce certain parts. This Lieutenant Krennic sealed the surviving factories and confiscated the documents.”

“Troubling this development is, but not unexpected it was.” Yoda said “Going around the Galaxy the Separatists are. Looking, searching for scientists and artifacts they are.”

“We believe that they are working on a superweapon, we managed to intercept some of those teams.” Master Windu spoke “They were looking for information on weapons systems utilized by the Sith Empire.”

Ki-Adi and Cera Tan could not hide their discomfort. Those were troubling news. The ancient Sith Empire was known for its deadly superweapons and if the Separatists manage to get their hands on some schematics could lead to countless dead and potentially could lead to the Republic losing the war.

The two senior Jedi Masters turned towards Cera. “How much do you know about the Jedi Shadows?”

The Arkanian frowned “They were sent on missions to hunt down and destroy Sith related artefacts. Working behind enemy lines, in small numbers.” at least that was the gist of it.

Mace Windu nodded “Indeed...” he focused on her “I understand that you lost your Padawan.” he ignored her pained expression “You have fought valiantly and performed excellently on the battlefront. You even gained some respect from the men serving under you.” he raised a hand to silence her as she had opened her mouth to speak “This is a list of accomplishments.” he gave one of his rare small smiles “We want you to lead a small group of Knights to become the modern version of Jedi Shadows. There will be some Clones assigned to you, all with special skills, Commander Rem, will be joining as well.”

Cera’s head spun, it was too much to process so she jumped on her feet and bowed “Thank you Masters, I will do my best. We will not fail you.”

“I hope so, for all of our sakes...” added Ki-Adi.

“Good, what you hear now… must not be repeated to the others.” Master Yoda said in a serious tone “Tell you we will about Darth Sidious...”

    About the game:

So as the title says, it is a Clone Wars RPG. It is mostly based on the recent TV series but with added Legends elements where it does not contradict (some of the background is also from my first fanfics, but is not that relevant for the future development of the game). It is set at the start of the third year of the war and hopefully will reach Revenge of the Sith. It involves a relatively small group of six Jedi Knights (one of which will be played by me), some Clones (mostly NPCs, but also can be controlled by the players) who are tasked to counter the CIS efforts to find scientists (some of whom are mad), ancient Sith artefacts and schematics of superweapons that were planned and/or constructed during the The Old Republic MMORPG era. The presence of Krennic pertains to the secret construction of a certain small metallic moon somewhere in the Outer Rim. This search is also connected to the Jedi’s investigation of the identity of Darth Sidious.

The game will involve some combat, travelling around the Galaxy, intrigues, conspiracies. A thriller set in the Star Wars universe. Since it is my first game, there will be limited slots for players, at least for now. I am looking for FIVE players, who will play as Jedi Knights. Those Knights must not have Padawans though. Players are allowed to make a secondary character (preferably a Clone or a non-Clone officer/soldier/pilot). The characters will be travelling by crafts provided by the GAR so for now no individual spaceships.

    Personality:
    • Quirks: A great deal of empathy for his fellow person

    • Likes/dislikes: Pettiness is his ultimate dislike - and those he calls 'templeheads' who only see things from the Temple perspective.

    • Strengths/weaknesses: A habit to lose track of the larger picture, but a stubborness that is both his strength and weakness.
    Weapons:
    • Lightsaber hilt: Elk prefers a scimitar of beskar he was given as a thank you by a young man he sponsored on Concord Dawn, though he has a simple hilt.

    • Blade color: Blue
Bio: A Jedi from an old line of little note, Elk Kya was known less so for his pursuits as a Knight, but for his charity work, which often involved sponsoring a child that was orphaned as a result of a Jedi mission. Elk was particularly concerned about the consequences of the Jedi Order's decision to support the Galactic Republic, though he had no designs on joining the Separatists or the dark side.

As long as the Galactic Republic allowed for dissenting views to exist - which it did - he just felt the need to do what he could, rather than move on to the next mission the Council had. Crossing paths with Qui-Gon Jinn, Thame Cerulian and even Dooku Serenno over the years, Elk didn't quite walk in those affluent circles but he did his bit.

The only time he'd been noticed was when he began sponsoring twelve orphans at once on Qotile, but otherwise nearly a hundred young men and women of all species owed their survival to his quiet shifting of Jedi resources to support those children. But after Qotile, the Council had quietly asked him to finance it himself, granting his a dispensation to have his own bank account, of all things. While he'd thought that the end of his efforts, many of the orphans who he saved gave back, and so Elk could save another generation.

Galidraan, Korda, Concord Dawn, Qotile, Naboo... all of these worlds had orphans he had helped.

But now, he was taking a stand against the force which was making more orphans than ever before; Dooku and his Separatists. Recalled, he was ready to go to war and join this team.

    Name: Maya Qwan
    Gender: female
    Age: 17 (!! see later)
    Race: human
    Physical description (picture if applicable):
    • Height; 5'4"

    • Weight: very light!

    Personality:
    • Quirks: Maya often acts on instinct and according to her intuition - feelings rather than logic. When she is upset or angry this affects the quality of her decision-making and judgements. She will need to calm this tendency if she is to progress as a Jedi. She is stubborn and determined, but has a strong sense of morality - she will fight with all her might against perceived injustice. Maya tends to focus on immediate problems / steps rather than thinking of the wider or more long-term picture.

    • Likes/dislikes: Maya is curious but impatient, with a zest for life and new experiences and making new acquaintances. She believes wholeheartedly in the Republic and the ideal of democracy, and is naïve to its failings. She does not like critics unsettling her worldview on these matters, or the idea of compromising to achieve a lesser evil. Elk might well consider her a Temple-head (@Sinrebirth )!

    • Strengths/weaknesses: Despite her naivety, or perhaps because of it, Maya can be quite persuasive in a negotiation. She tends to see matters along clear lines of right/wrong rather than dubious shades of grey. The rogue Trandoshan Jedi, Syrruluss, commented to Yoda when Maya helped him to make his peace with the Order; "The mind of a child is simple and sincere, but its clarity is quite compelling. She harangued me with rightness!" However, she has much to learn in the art of diplomacy and nuance from her seniors.
    • Maya's Force skills are best developed in enhancing her combat skills with a lightsaber, as well as boosting physical attributes to move quicker, jump further etc. Despite the best efforts of her Master, she lags behind in more esoteric Force skills such as farseeing, sensing others, creating illusions or mind tricks. She cannot get the hang of telekinesis at all. She is too impatient!
    • Maya learned martial arts on her homeworld before she was marked out and selected for the Order, and these married up well with the lightsaber techniques of the Jedi. She is small and light but with speed, agility, and balance she has learned to divert the attacks of bigger, stronger opponents rather than stop them dead, and to strike with all her momentum and Force-enhanced skill rather than physical strength.
    • She is quick and acrobatic
    • She has little knowledge of politics, and has no idea how to gamble in card games or how to behave in a bar
    Weapons:
    • Lightsaber hilt: fashioned in a traditional katana style complete with lacquered tanto holster.

    • Blade color: blue
    Bio:
Maya is 17 standard years old and still a Padawan.
She was discovered quite late by the Order, and concerns were raised over certain hot-headed tendencies - she was known back in her native Dojo for standing up to bullies - but Yoda saw something in her pure-heartedness and took her on. She was paired with the ancient Ithothian Master, Chodo Sun. Chodo is a staunch pacifist and sits on the Reconciliation Council - he will have nothing to do with the war. He is severe but patient with Maya as he tries to calm her youthful tendencies and teach her the virtues of passivity and patience. He has tried to turn her towards healing or other disciplines. It was no accident that Yoda selected Chodo to be her mentor. However, her combat skills have shone through and though she is still a Padawan the Order is desperate in time of war. She was selected for a solo-mission to investigate a malfunctioning sensor station on the remote jungle world of Sewosta, (the technical team first sent to fix it went missing), and impressed with her adaptability in unexpected circumstances.

Why Yoda and Mace have decided for her to join the Shadow Jedi is not known - she will easily be the most junior member. It has caused a rift with her former master - Chodo is furious. One unlucky Jedi Knight - maybe Elk or Lynnori? - may get pushed into her taking her on as a Padawan...

    Race: Arkanian

    Physical description (picture if applicable):

    • Eye color: Green
    Personality:
    • Quirks: focused and determined, “slice first” ask questions later kind of person, warrior at heart, honorable
    • Likes/dislikes: likes justice, the Republic, defending the weak, dislikes the Dark Side, the Sith, the Separatists, corruption, evil, injustice
    • Strengths/weaknesses: excellent swordswoman, not that good with using the Force
    Weapons:
    • Lightsaber hilt:
    • Blade color: formerly blue, now silver
Bio: taken from an early age from her family to be raised and trained as a Jedi. She was a good student, a bit unruly. Cera was to be trained as a Temple Guard, but she could be a bit too impulsive for that. Nevertheless she excelled in the martial training and sword mastery. She was good enough with the Force to become a Knight, but never showed too much promise in that regard. Just before the outbreak of the Clone Wars she had a Padawan assigned to her, the studious and bookish Ro’oland Leih, something that Master Yoda found amusing. It was not a joke though, that assignment was beneficial both for the student and the teacher. Cera learned to control her impulsiveness and temper, and the boy learned how to fight and protect the powerless. During the Clone Wars she was assigned to fight alongside Master Ki-Adi Mundi and the Galactic Marines. There Commander Rem was the Clone assigned to her. They formed a mutual respect, maybe something more? The trio fought on numerous fronts, but the latest assignment on the industrial world of Xinaghar changed everything. There her Padawan was killed by a Mandalorian, employed by the Togorian CIS General Sheerah. Grief stricken she, along with the other Republic forces managed to drive off the Separatists, leaving the planet devastated and of no interest for either the Republic and the CIS. There, among the ruins she found important data that set her on a different path…

    IC: Cera Tan
Location: Briefing Room, Jedi Temple, Coruscant

Several days had passed since that impromptu debriefing in the middle of the night. Cera had been shaken by what was revealed to her. There had been a Sith Lord among the highest echelons of the Republic. The Jedi had been hunting for them, but to no avail. The fact that the Order was reviving an ancient group among the Jedi, the Shadows, was telling of their desperation.

Someone was feeding the Separatists information about Republic scientists, Jedi repositories of forbidden knowledge. The latter must be coming from Dooku, but still there was information leakage. Surely, there must be spies in the Republic, something Cera hoped was the only reason, but what Dooku had said to Master Kenobi on Geonosis… Of course that could have been a red herring, sending them on a wild Bantha chase, but things did not add up.

Also how was that Krennic person always seems to be showing up at places that even Republic Intelligence did not know? They say that in war the first casualty is the truth. Cera pursed her lips, that was her mission, to uncover the truth, to pierce the veil of darkness that was draped around them. She looked at Master Windu standing there, focused on his datapad. They were going to report to him.

The door opened and the three Jedi, who were available for this task, entered the Briefing Room. They were a weird mix to be sure. The first one was Knight Fardreamer, from what Cera was told, she did not directly participate in the battles, but helped with what comes after them. It could be useful, as they would surely visit some former battlegrounds. Next was Knight Kya. He was an odd choice, given his preoccupation with orphans. Cera considered that for a moment, the Council knows what they were doing. The first thing that came to mind was that the man had travelled a lot and that children could be useful as they saw and heard things. Last was, to her surprise, a young Padawan. They must have been desperate. The girl seemed able enough, but will she be ready to face the darkness? Cera studied her for a moment then focused back on Master Windu.

The bald man cleared his throat as the others sat in their places “Thank you all for coming.” he started “You know I am not keen on making speeches, so I will cut to the chase.” he gave a wry smile “We are facing a serious threat. The Separatists are working on what appears to be a project involving superweapons. Knight Cera Tan here...” he gestured at her “... uncovered a portion of it. Millennia ago the Jedi Order had their operatives behind enemy lines, called the Jedi Shadows. We believe that it is high time to revive them. You are the first ones selected for the task, each of you uniquely qualified for the mission.”

Master Windu then activated a holoprojector, showing the globe of a planet “This is Obroa Skai, you all are familiar with it, it is currently being invaded by the CIS. The Republic had sent forces to stop them, but you will have to find a way to go behind enemy lines and find out what they are looking for.” he said gravely “Your homebase will be this Dreadnought “Empress Theta”, a battalion of Clones will be assigned to you, but I must stress you are going to report only to Knight Tan and to me, directly.” he fixed them with with a stern gaze “You will unfortunately have to hide your mission from our troops and non-Clone officers, and fellow Jedi. I understand how difficult that will be, but you will be saving billions of lives and hopefully help bring the war to an end.” Mace looked at her “Knight Tan will be your leader as she has the most combat experience, her orders should be considered as if coming from the Council.” he looked back at the group “Any questions?”

While Elk kept track of his war correspondence, he managed to draw himself out of his datapad to the swirling presence of the Jedi before him... and as he looked up, he was surprised to see Senior Master Mace Windu.

Elk stood to attention, sensing other Jedi arriving, and he focused upon them for a moment. Elk didn't recognise the others, and the Knight present with the Korrunai. He cleared his throat and Elk blinked.

“Thank you all for coming. You know I am not keen on making speeches, so I will cut to the chase. We are facing a serious threat. The Separatists are working on what appears to be a project involving superweapons. Knight Cera Tan here...” he gestured at to the woman, and Elk nodded in greeting “... uncovered a portion of it. Millennia ago the Jedi Order had their operatives behind enemy lines, called the Jedi Shadows. We believe that it is high time to revive them. You are the first ones selected for the task, each of you uniquely qualified for the mission.”

Jedi Shadows, Elk thought. They hadn't been in existence... since the Old Sith Wars? Perhaps the Great Galactic Wars?

Master Windu then activated a holoprojector, showing the globe of a planet “This is Obroa Skai, you all are familiar with it, it is currently being invaded by the CIS. The Republic had sent forces to stop them, but you will have to find a way to go behind enemy lines and find out what they are looking for.” he said gravely “Your homebase will be this Dreadnought “Empress Theta”, a battalion of Clones will be assigned to you, but I must stress you are going to report only to Knight Tan and to me, directly.” he fixed them with with a stern gaze, and Elk frowned.

    Off the books? From who?

“You will unfortunately have to hide your mission from our troops and non-Clone officers, and fellow Jedi. I understand how difficult that will be, but you will be saving billions of lives and hopefully help bring the war to an end. Knight Tan will be your leader as she has the most combat experience, her orders should be considered as if coming from the Council.” He looked back at the group “Any questions?”

Elk narrowed his eyes. "Why the secrecy... is there a leak? The clones are programmed to be loyal... our fellow Jedi are above reproach."

Of course, that wasn't true. Dooku was the ultimate traitor, as were the other Separatist followers.

Lynnori had a feeling this mission would be crucial when Master Windu handled the briefing.

She frowned at the mention of Jedi Shadows and the need for secrecy, even from other Jedi, and the Clones... Even from Xel, the one who had been her team-mate on more than one mission.

She concurred silently with Kya's statement. If they had to hide and have a stance of mistrust/wariness with those they should be able to trust implicitly, it felt like the success of their mission was undermined from the start.

"I agree," Lynnori spoke up. "Who then can we trust, and what criteria for trustworthiness do we dare use?"

Maya glanced at the other, senior, Knights beside her, still not sure what she was doing here. She was too nervous to offer any questions presently. The summons had come in the middle of the night, a hushed whisper, and the speeder had taken her directly to the briefing.

Lucky she travelled light. She had everything she needed; her lightsaber, a comlink, the aquata-breather, and a credit chip with a nominal amount of currency for an emergency, all tucked into her cloth belt.

She shivered against the evening coolness in her brief tunic, and listened to Master Windu, her excitement growing with every word.

Had they got the right person? How had she been chosen for such a mission? Here she was being addressed by one of the greatest Masters of her generation. She felt dizzy.

To divert her attention, she considered her companions.

She instantly took a liking to Lynnori - she seemed kind and interesting and cool. If Maya was going to have to share a bunk on some cramped starship with someone, she hoped it would be Lynnori. Maya had a feeling this woman would be great fun to spend time with.

She was wary of the senior they called Elk. He radiated intellectuality and reminded her of the severe instructors that would ask her trick questions, then turn her answers inside out and make her feel stupid. A contrarian. If they were searching for Sith Artefacts, she expected he would be the font of knowledge and wisdom. And somehow, despite her fear of the man, she felt respect and an instinct that he was trustworthy.

And then there was Cera; austere, elegant Cera. Though the woman was an Arkanian and old enough to be her mother, Maya sensed a kindred spirit - a warrior rather than an intellectual. Even the grace with which she walked suggested a formidable and exquisite lightsaber technique. True, her aura was tinged with darkness. Cera carried a pain. Yet Maya wondered for the briefest moment what it would be like to be taken on as a Padawan by such a woman - what she could learn from her. Perhaps that had been Master Windu's intention? She bit her lip with guilt and remembered she already had a Master.

But Chodo had not been there to bid her farewell this time. The ancient Ithorian never missed such an occasion, and his silent absence was more powerful than a thunderous, raging sermon. Maya worried; sensing that secrets and conflicts were being kept from her. This was all above her head. She felt as if she were caught in the clashing currents of a restless ocean, and deposited by fate on this particular island to perform the will of the Force.

She resolved to do her best. If it meant ending the war, it was all she could hope to do.

Another glance at her fellow Jedi suggested a clue to Maya's role in the team. They had a warrior-leader, an empath, and a philosopher. If they were going behind enemy lines, they were going to need someone capable of climbing, leaping and sneaking into places unnoticed.

    At this, Maya excelled...

Cera gave Master Windu a “I-told-you-so” look, he smiled and nodded to her. It was her turn to speak. “Under normal circumstances I would have agreed with you Knight Kya.” she paused for a moment, thinking how to proceed, she too was not good at making speeches “Have you heard of the Republic Strategic Advisory Cell?” she observed the others “They are a governmental organization that works to find way to fight the Separatists.” Cera smiled “That sounds innocent and we should consider them allies. The problem is that it seems that this organization is a front for something else as there had been reported cases of certain members overruling Jedi Generals and other high ranking officers, even outmaneuvering the Republic Intelligence.” she thought for a moment “Though I am not sure about the latter part. Anyway they are seizing vital information that we need and are denying us access to it. Not direct denial, but simple stonewalling and dragging their feet.” she looked to Mace who nodded “We would like to keep other Jedi on a need-to-know basis for now and also to have them plausible deniability. As for the Clones they can be forced to reveal the information and non-Clone officers could leak it too.” Cera did not like to think of Commander Rem as programmed, but did not press the issue as not to reveal too much, especially since Mace Windu was still present.

"Well, why don't...?" blurted Maya, before catching herself.

She remembered in whose presence she was standing, and raised a hand, meekly.

    IC-- Lynnori in the Briefing

She sneaked a glance at the outspoken Padawan and shot her a wink. She voiced what the rest of them were thinking Lynnori thought wryly as she absorbed what Knight Tan had revealed and waited for Master Windu to continue.

    Secret Briefing

    Maya
nearly spoke, and lifted a hand, and Elk bristled somewhat. He hadn't raised his hand to speak; this wasn't a class room. Lynnori winked at the woman, but Elk was more direct. "Speak up Padawan, I am sure Master Windu and Knight Tan want to hear your thoughts."

He sounded abrupt, probably, but to discover there was an agency within the Republic acting, well, with its own agency, was concerning. The Republic had been changed by the war - and not for the better. If the Jedi were losing control of things, who had control. If the war was chaos, the Republic was civilisation - they needed it, fallible or not.

If they lost control of the Republic, they had sacrificed hundreds of their comrades for nothing.

Maya jumped at his tone but recovered and bowed with deference towards Master Elk Kya. Then she turned to Mace Windu and Cera Tan.

"Well... I wondered why don't we just go and confront this Republic Strategic Advisory Cell and tell them to stop it?" she reached up with one hand to fiddle with her Padawan's braid behind her left ear, as she felt the attention of everyone in the room upon her. "I mean... you know... the stonewalling and denial of information."

A silence. She felt a rosy glow spreading across her cheeks. "I mean... it's hard enough fighting confederate slavers, syndicate droid armies and Darkside Adepts; why are we fighting each other? Aren't we all defending the Republic?"

Her final question came in a whisper. "What is this front, and why aren't we going after it?"

    Clandestine meeting

"Very well put, Padawan," Elk said, turning back to Master Windu and Knight Tan. "Unless of course you feel the need to hide this from the Senate, because someone within the establishment is actively blocking your investigations."

He said it matter-of-factly, but Elk knew such things happened; that the Jedi efforts to stamp out slaver cartels, bribery, company abuses and so forth had been an exercise in futility for some years - they'd been dealing with crisis after crisis and all of it had merely been symptoms of the rot.

Elk knew as much, because he'd heard it discussed it at length between Masters Dooku, Qui-Gon and Sifo-Dyas many years ago.

Master Windu sighed and Cera could see how tired he was from the war, the plotting and deception. The Jedi had strayed too far from the ideals they claimed to uphold. The question was so sincere and naive that it almost made her smile “Normally I would agree with you Padawan, but we have already tried that way and they simply lied to us. The problem is that they know that we are aware of the deception and they don’t care. There is something going on that worries us. The Republic had strayed from the path in the past but we are now trying to prevent it from going down this dark path.” said Master Windu. Cera simply nodded, she dared not speak as she could not reveal what they had told her about this Darth Sidious…

    IC: Lynnori Fardreamer \ Briefing

Lynnori took note of the expressions and nuances of Master Windu's and Knight Tan's disclosures. She frowned. They were at an impasse. She asked rhetorically:

"Then what options do we have, and which of these is likely to be successful?"

    Prevent...

Those same arguments between Dooku Serenno, Qui-Gon Jinn and Sifo Dyas reverberated in Elk's mind again.

Lynnori had good point. He wanted to add to it.

"So we're abandoning politics and official action," he said. "Sounds necessary in the circumstances."

[IC: briefing - finally I adopt the protocol!]

Maya listened to Master Windu's reply, and the other Knights' responses, and was not entirely satisfied.

Lynnori's unexpected wink at the crucial moment had been so warm and encouraging at the time. She would take time to thank her for that later. And she had been pleasantly surprised when Master Kya had actually agreed with her question. What a boost to her courage!

Yet, the way Elk had reframed her question seemed now perhaps like just a rhetorical challenge in the light of his subsequent acceptance of the answer.

All in all, the warmth of approval from her seniors had cooled in the chill of understanding that there were things going on in the Republic that she simply did not comprehend like they did. Her instincts told her Master Windu and Master Tan were keeping things from her. Maybe she could learn more from Master Kya? He spoke in a way that made her feel like he knew - or suspected - more than was being said.

But for now the answer was given; Master Windu was going to deal with this Strategic Advisory Cell, whatever that meant. It was their job to perform the mission in hand.

Maya decided to focus on this and try to put aside the unsettling notion that not everyone in the Republic was on the same side. It made sense they would need to act in secret to avoid leaks to the Confederates, especially if they were going behind enemy lines. That there were Confederate spies within the Republic was an easier version of the truth for her to deal with, so she adopted that attitude.

    The mission, then.

She raised a hand again, then retracted it, feeling stupid when Master Elk Kya glared at her.

She took a deep breath and said, "So what do we think they are looking for on Obro... Obro... that planet you said? And when do we leave?"

Master Windu pursed his lips at what the Padawan was saying. It seems the astrographic and history lessons were lacking. “You will be leaving tonight.” he said “The Empress Theta will be part of a reinforcement fleet going towards Obroa Skai. Master Voolvif Monn requested assistance, so Master Secura will be leading the way. You will be providing support, you will have to find the way towards the main library. You will have a Clone battalion with you, providing assistance.” he turned to the Padawan “You should learn about the world you are going in. Obroa Skai is where one of the largest repositories of knowledge in the Galaxy, along with an ancient Jedi Temple, hosting a number of artefacts.” he said disapprovingly. Cera eyed him then turned to the others “Does any of you have any combat experience on the front line?”

    [IC: Briefing]

Maya felt the sting of Master Windu's reprimand, especially in front of the senior Knights.

She must have missed that particular lesson with Madam Jocasta Nu. She bit her lip. Or fallen asleep, perhaps? But astrography was so boring! Maya never saw the point of learning by rote thousands of quadrant-sector-system name sequences. That's what databanks are for...

She realised Master Cera Tan was asking a question, and she realised this time she could answer confidently in the positive.

Maya waited, but neither Lynnori nor Elk took the lead. So she stepped forward and raised a hand.

    "Yes, I have."

Lynnori gave the young Padawan a considering, admiring glance before speaking up. "I hven't been on the front lines per se but I've been involved in the immediate aftermath helping the civilians and other Jedi teams with the mop-ups. I haven't had the priviliege of working with Master Secura, but her reputation leads me to welcome this opportunity."

    Briefing

Elk thought he could see some apprehensions forming in Mace's mind. That momentum Maya had built up was lost when she forgot the name of Obroa-Skai. Lynorri at least had some combat experience.

"I have some experience, Master Windu. I have been on mercy missions since the war began, but I assisted with the defence of Rhen Var and it's recapture at the start of the war." He paused, recollecting the sudden outbreak of war and the Separatist invasion of the snowy world - one of their early objectives.

"Obroa-Skai is a key location in the Inner Rim. How heavy is the fighting expected to be?" Elk also shrugged. "And how soon do we need to go?"

Cera nodded to the Padawan. At least there was that. Maybe they could finish her training during the mission. Something that she did not relish, given how her Padawan was so recently killed. Then it was Lynnori’s turn, her skills could be useful during post-combat, though their mission did not involve helping out after the battle was over. If she was chosen by the Council so her skills should be useful. Sometimes enemies still lurk after the battles were over, given that their CIS counterparts will too be sticking to the shadows. Last was Kya. Cera had heard about the defense of Rhen Var. So he had been on one of the worlds related to the ancient history of the Order. “We are talking about full scale invasion. Several cities have already fallen and the capitol is under siege. We will be leaving tonight, so get your things together. And you, Padawan.” she turned to Maya “You should do some reading about the planet we are going to.”

IC Maya Qwan - the briefing

Maya bowed to Master Tan, wary of drawing Master Windu's ire again.

    "I will, Master."

A thrill shivered down her back. Into combat, again. They hadn't quizzed her about Sewosta. Presumably they had read the report on what she had achieved single-handedly. That was why she had been selected. She repressed her worry. Single-handedly was not exactly accurate. In her own mind it was still a fluke.

It was time to prove otherwise, to herself as much as anyone else. A new mission, a new world, awaited...

She caught Mace Windu's reproachful look as she ended her bow and rose again, and groaned inwardly. She had homework to do on the way.

But the thrill of anticipation soon returned. They were leaving immediately!
