    IC: President Kurt Roland
Oval Office, White House, Washington D.C.

The steely gaze that Kurt angled at the General briefly overshadowed any truth behind the man’s words. He did not like being second-guessed; a product of his own pride that had worked as both a blessing and a detriment in the past. It was still too early to tell which way this outcome would lean, but Kurt was more than willing to push the limits by sticking to his guns.

Fortunately, he had Matt around to reel him in when such occasions occurred.

His Chief of Staff was punctual as he stepped in to challenge the General’s logic. For his part, Kurt remained silent, his expression safely guarded as he waited impatiently for Meyers to answer. His decision would hinge on what the other man had to say.

"Whoever initiated it might have reason not to trust your people, Sir,” Meyers pointed out, seemingly unfazed by the scrutiny he was facing. "There is a leak to this artist. The people who run such operations do not leak. So someone is talking." There was a pause as Meyers sighed with resignation. "These things are not initiated for no reason, Mr. President."

Kurt inhaled deeply as he leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest. “So, we remain discrete,” he reiterated, going back to what Meyers had suggested earlier. It was apparent that he had allowed a clearer mind to prevail – despite wanting to rush in to stop the deceptive nature of this thing, he realized that it was pertinent to keep a low profile in order to reveal the truth. In that sense, Meyers was correct.

“But if our people are…untrusting—” He got hung up on that last word, the thought leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. “…then what do you suggest? Where do we turn? The sooner we can put a cap on this, the better.”

This Professor,” Matt piped up. “He knew something about this. He mentioned Antville, too. Maybe we talk to him first? Leave Roberts out of this for now?"

A dubious look passed over Kurt’s features as his shoulders noticeably slumped. Again, he felt compelled to ignore the professor; perhaps it was his own animosity getting in the way of seeing reason, but he didn’t like the idea of confiding in the man. And yet, he was already privy to sensitive information. What else did he know? Was he part of the problem?

The only answer he could provide for the time being was a quiet curse as he pinched the bridge of his nose with consternation.

"Sir, I might have a specialist to have a more discrete look into this,” the General pressed as he tried to offer his own solution. “If you wish, I could activate her."

Kurt looked up marginally beneath the shadow of his hand and nodded. “Go ahead,” he acquiesced.

Matt took advantage of the silence that followed to push one last time for the professor. "I get this Professor here. Now."

Surprisingly, Kurt did not protest. He simply sighed and resigned himself to his chair, his gaze meeting Matt’s briefly in the exchange. Matt would understand that by saying nothing, he was giving his consent to move forward.

Sebastian sighed. "Well, we take the firestairs." He looked around again. But found nothing especially suspicious. "The alley is dark enough to give us some cover."

Sebastian checked his watch and then his phone. He wondered if he should let Miles know. There was nobody else. But if he somehow vanished in the US Miles had to know. Maybe later.

"What happened to your family? Could it have something to do with it? Unlisted my parents too when I was young. But maybe there is a connection?" He was really guessing. But what else could he do? Then again he had the feeling it had to dimwits the boy. The man in the alley. He must have been waiting there. He must have located LEGO ... which probably was quite an effort ... not impossible once you understood he was using Miles as an alias ... but not that easy ... and then he must have waited. For how long? How did he know Kyle would use the alley? This made little sense. But it showed the man had specificially hunted down Kyle to ... do what? Confuse him? Scare him? It was a puzzle with so many missing pieces.

This all had something to do with the boy.

    Diner, Washington D.C.

As Kyle munched on his meal, he listened as Sebastian mentioned taking the fire escape, and that the alley was dark, so it should be safe. He watched as the man checked his watch and the phone. Then Sebastian asked him a question.

"What happened to your family? Could it have something to do with it? Unlisted my parents too when I was young. But maybe there is a connection?"

Kyle continued to slowly eat his food, but he looked away from Sebastian. He had no idea what Sebastian meant about his parents, but why would someone want to kill off orphans? If that was the case, there would be a whole lot of dead kids. And that still wasnt a reason. Kyle didnt like talking about what had happened to his family. About Elsie. Kyle stared into his plate, and shrugged his shoulders.

"They died. Dad was shot. Mum died in a fire. End of story. No more family." Kyle frowned darkly. "I just wonder how they found me. I dont use my real name. I left the area. I move around a lot." Kyle sighed softly, pushing what was left of the food away from him. He still didnt look up from the table.

"I guess we better get back. So we can work on makeovers." he mumbled softly, as he wrapped his hand around the hot cup of coffee, taking a large gulp of the liquid.

Kawin executed his plan and when he looked back he saw the hunter at his car. Still calling to someone and looking around. He looked unhappy. Obviously he had understood his victim had been warned. Not that Kawin cared, not beyond the fact that the voice on the phone seems to have been telling the truth. Circumstances were far too many.

Luckily the man did not spot him as he snuck away. When Kawun arrived at the meeting point he was pretty sure that he had lost him for now. He had escaped what seemed to have been an assassination attempt on his life. All because he followed the words of a voice on a burner phone on a lark for something different even if it was a prank.

The cab was arriving as ordered and a young woman leaned forward from the window. "You ordered a cab?"

A single message on his phone appeared. A FRIEND again. YOU MADE IT?

"Yes!" he called as he jogged forward with a smile and a wave as he got in the back before texting back, YES. WHAT NOW?

"Ikea side entrance please." He simply stated as he waited to hear what else could be said.

The other guest yawned and looked over to them, the he stood up and slowly walked into their direction. He allowed his hand to wander under his coat and ... as if it was the most natural thing in the world, he drew a gun ... right behind Kyle's head he raised it. One click of his finger and Kyle would be dead.

Sebastian was the only person seeing it. A scene that played out in such a surreal natural way it seemed unreal. Only the look of the man made it an undeniable truth. His eyes showed satisfaction. The satisfaction to kill a harmless teenage boy eating his last fries.

Matt nodded, as he understood the silent approval and waited for Meyers to be out of the room. Then he picked up the phone and made arrangements for the Secret Service to get this Jared here. When he was done he turned back to Kurt.

"Our Term had just begun. We hired hundreds of people most of them were recommended. It is possible ... hell this is Washington ... it is certain some of them have ... loyalities to others. But someone believes we cannot be trusted with a threat to American lives? That sounds a bit paranoid to me. Even for the intelligence community." He sighed. "Meyers is one of them and a patriot. He assumes reason behind it. But honestly? Antville sounds to me like a backdoor. A work around for operations you would not permit."

The phone rang and Matt took it. "What?! Are you sure? Absolutely sure of this?" The person on the line answered and Matt thanked him and hung up. "Professor Jared was robbed and murdered tonight in his flat. About an hour ago." He raised his eyebrows. "What the hell is going on here, Kurt?"

The cab driver was starting to drive. She looked through the back window. YOU NEED ANYTHING FROM YOUR FLAT? YOU HAVE A TEN MINUTES HEADSTART. OTHERWISE LEAVE THE CITY.

There was a long pause and just when one thought there was nothing to say anymore another message came. WE NEED TO MEET. ALL OF US WHO ARE LEFT. TAKE THE BUS TO NEW YORK.

It did not take long before the shop was identified. With address and everything. If they hurried, they would be there before closing.

The reports of the other teams came in while they drove. The boy was in D.C. and MOORE was one his trail. The Spaniard was dead. The Canadian had escaped, warned in time to run from Rutherford. But Rutherford was not yet giving up on him.

    Two of six were dead.

The social media search on Elena came up with nothing. Three weeks ago she had vanished from the face of the earth after she had been in D.C. with a man called Rudyenev. A Russian multi-millionaire. Tech. Philanthropist. Owned a football club in Spain. Rich guy. Probably not even on who had made money with illegal stuff. At least the CIA had never connected him to anything and that was kind of a unique thing for rich Russians. He had been with Elena. Or Elena had been with him. He liked model types. After that she had presumably travelled back to NY and there she had vanished.

When the mobile started vibrating Simmons was surprised himself how little surprise he actually felt. "Colonel." That was all he said. "It actually is General now, Simmons." Simmons smiled. "For me you will always be the Colonel, Sir. And I mean no disrespect, you know that." There was silence. "Adrian, the President has given orders to investigate a potential Antville operation. Do you know anything about it?" Silence between the men. Oh Meyers was too smart. Not many people who could organise a deep black like this one so quickly, right? "Sir, I am afraid ..." "Don't lie, boy."

Simmons felt silent and sat at his table. His eyes went to the door and then back to the laptop. The police had found video material in Lambs flat. Simmons had spent the last hour watching it. "Remember Falludscha?" Simmons asked. Meyers sighed. "How could I ever forget?" "I sometimes wish you were dead, Sir. Then I could ... " Meyers ended the sentence. "Tell yourself it was all a dream?" Simmons confirmed with silence.

A long moment they did not say anything.

    "Simmons ..."
"Colonel, it is Falludscha all over again. On american soil!"
    "Are you sure ...?"

"One hundred percent, Sir. Let the ants do their work."

Simmons hung up. He would have to change location. Quickly. Meyers had kept him long enough on the phone to locate him.

[This is a combined post with LordT and I did not see this one coming]

A million thoughts rushed through his head. A million options ... the gun, he would not be quick enough. Leaping for Kyle. The same. Say something. Do something. Whatever ... something that kept this man from shooting a bullet into Kyle's head. But there was nothing he could do. He had no option that showed a slight chance of success. So he sat still and watched in terror at the man. And then ...

    Nothing.

    Nothing happened.

    Nothing at all.

Sebastian looked around and found the room ... what exactly was this ... frozen?

The man did not shoot. Or move. But it was more than that. The TV was frozen. The waitress, too. She had just thrown a piece of trash away and this piece of trash was ... mid air. Defying gravity it was standing still mid air! The world was suddenly like a photograph. A moment captured and unmoving. The cars outside had stopped in the midst of their drive. The flickering lights of streetlights had stopped flickering.

"Kyle." Sebastian said and did not know what to say, so he pointed to the man behind him. What the hell did just happen? Kyle was not frozen. The only thing in the world not frozen seemed to be Kyle.

Was this him? Had he done this?

He had no idea. But somehow he was sure it had been him. He felt something warm in his face and wiped over his mouth. Blood. His nose was bleeding.

Then he realized this ... thing that had just happened and could end any second now.

"Go. We need to go now." He grabbed the hand of the boy and began to make his way towards the front door of the diner. "Now!"

    Kyle
Diner near The Morton Hotel, Washington D.C.

Kyle was busy staring down at the table, when Sebastian suddenly called his name. He looked up, to see Sebastian pointing at something. Kyle turned his head...

    And died.

    .

    . . .

Well, perhaps not literally. But Kyle was pretty sure his heart stopped, when he turned his head, to suddenly come eye to eye with the barrel of a gun pointed just inches from his own head. He froze, as his body suddenly went numb. The food, falling from his fingertips. How did this guy? ... wait. What was going on? Why wasnt he dead? The guy wasnt moving! He took in the scene around him, but his rational mind simply sputtered.

The look on the man's face was even more terrifying to Kyle. He almost seemed happy. The guy was gonna shoot him, right in front of Sebastian!! As he processed that thought, Kyle heard Sebastian, his words seemed to scream into his head from far away.

"Go. We need to go now." Kyle was vaguely aware that Sebastian had grabbed his hand and heading for the door. "Now!"

Kyle grabbed his backpack, slinging it over one shoulder as he moved, or was dragged. He wasnt sure anymore what was happening. He did notice that Sebastian seemed to be bleeding. Was he hurt? Nothing was moving. Kyle vaguely thought they should have knocked the guy out. Or steal his cellphone. But his body was following Sebastian's suggestion to run like heck outta there, before whatever was happening, stopped happening, and the
guy would have another shot at Kyle. Literally. So Kyle ran, following Sebastian's lead, his heart beating wildly, as he followed the older man out of the Diner.

Kawin sat back and removed his glasses as he pinched the bridge of his nose as the cab driver was starting to drive. She looked through the back window, not that he paid her any heed really. The unreality of the whole situation was like a bad sci-fi show! He had only listened to the voice on the phone on a lark, as a way to mix up his repetitive life and step out for just a moment. Only now, as he felt the phone vibrate, it was real. YOU NEED ANYTHING FROM YOUR FLAT? YOU HAVE A TEN MINUTES HEADSTART. OTHERWISE LEAVE THE CITY.

Patting himself down as he mentally ran a few sums in his mind he called out to the cabie. "Change of plans, I forgot the extra loonies for the furniture. Swing back toward. . ." here he listed his address and where to park as he nodded to himself. Living off the grid was one thing, but you at least always had to take something with you. So he needed to grab his survival pack, which doubled as his natural disaster and hunting trip gear that was always kept just in case. Although after a couple years ago he doesn't really want to contemplate if he keeps it as the wise thing to do with terrorists being a reality or his ex-wife. Tapping out a reply he simply replied. UNDERSTOOD. No need to let her know one way or another.

There was a long pause and just when one thought there was nothing to say anymore another message came. WE NEED TO MEET. ALL OF US WHO ARE LEFT. TAKE THE BUS TO NEW YORK.

Now he really had to go home, no way he could even contemplate that without his passport. Although that begged the question, who was hunting him?

Jane asked if she had ever been to New York. Maria just looked up while the messages came in. "Sure." She said. "Shopping trips. A lot actually."

She leaned back and looked out of the window. "Two are dead. But the Spaniard and the Canadian have apparently been warned, too." And the teenager? How on earth did he end up on this list. But these people were not so innocent. Someone was behind them. Someone had warned them. Someone with deep contacts.

"I have the address. We need to follow those burner phones. They will lead us to whoever tipped them of." Maybe the billionaire? Elena? She was most likely in New York.

"Whatever we tried to prevent, I guess we have started late into the race." Maria sighed. What did Adrian know he did not tell her? "Well, New York will show. I take a nap. Wake me up when we are there." She sighed and tried to get comfortable in her seat.

    IC: President Kurt Roland
Oval Office, White House, Washington D.C.

Leaning forward with his elbows resting on the edge of the desk, Kurt regarded Matt carefully as he processed his words. He didn’t want to admit it, but it made sense; Antville exhibited all of the classic hallmarks of a backdoor operation. How the hell did they allow this one to slip through?

He sighed and nodded slowly with acceptance. “Alright, noted,” he replied evenly. “The implications of this thing must run pretty deep to have reached this point.” Trailing off, he shook his head incredulously. “It saddens me to say that…”

Of course, he was referring to the insinuation that members of his own administration were working against him to carry this out. While he understood it was part of the political game, he had to draw the line now that it was a matter of national security. This kind of behavior was strictly unacceptable. They had to get to the bottom of this; the lives of the American people depended on it.

As that thought crossed his mind, the phone rang with an update on the wayward professor. "What?! Are you sure? Absolutely sure of this?" Matt was clearly distraught, prompting Kurt to slowly rise back to his feet. Furrowing his brow with concern, he started to walk around to the other side of the desk to approach his long-time colleague.

“What was that about?” he asked carefully.

Matt hung up the phone slowly. "Professor Jared was robbed and murdered tonight in his flat. About an hour ago."

His expression hardened as that revelation weighed heavily upon him – the professor had been their only true lead. Turning, he slammed his fist down onto the desktop in a brief flare of rage. “Dammit!”

"What the hell is going on here, Kurt?" Matt pressed, his eyebrows rising with uncertainty.

Inhaling deeply, Kurt shook his head slowly. “This was no coincidence,” he stated matter-of-factly, reaching up to run a hand over his face and to ease his tired eyes. It was clear that the pressures of the day were starting to catch up with him at this late hour.

A palpable silence passed between them before he finally leveled his gaze on his friend. “You were right, Matt – we’re not dealing with paranoia.” He scoffed quietly before continuing. “We have a major breach here, and whoever is responsible has demonstrated that they are willing to kill in order to protect the truth. They made that message loud and clear.”

With a sigh, Kurt placed his hands on his hips and diverted his eyes so that he was staring at a fixed point just beyond Matt’s shoulder. He took a moment to ponder the professor’s fate and the events that had led up to his untimely death. “Maybe I was wrong to take an aggressive approach to this,” he lamented with a real sense of regret. “Meyers stressed discretion, and right now, we’re making too many waves. If we continue to stir the waters, more people will die. I can't continue to gamble with American lives until I know who I can trust.”

He pursed his lips and turned back to Matt. “We have to go about this another way…”

Driven by a spark of ambition, he began to run through his options. One idea in particular stood out to him, but it did not come without its own set of repercussions. They could potentially take a fall, but was he willing to make that kind of sacrifice to get to the bottom of this and ensure the safety of the American people?

Kurt exhaled through his nose as he began to knead his forehead; he felt a headache coming on.

“I understand Meyers has his resources, and that he’s doing his best to assist us…” There was a slight pause as he considered the consequences one last time. “…but what if our only chance at exposing the truth is by agreeing to go to Antville?”

The Guest looked shocked and his head moved around ... the moment he spotted the two fleeing though his eyes grew even more grim and determined that before. "What the hell ..."

Matt looked tired. "We should get some sleep. I have the feeling the quiet times are over." He yawned. "I will have someone look into the murder of the Professor, just in case."

Ten minutes were not a lot. But usually it should have been no problem to get a passport an a few things from the room. But when Kawin entered his flat, it looked like a bomb had exploded. Everything was a mess. Someone had searched the flat obviously. Cupboards had been ripped out, the couch hat been cut open, the books had been looked through. Nevertheless he found his passport at the desk.

In the chaos it was easy to overlook the person sitting in the last armchair that had not been demolished and who had waited for him.

New York City, Outside Red Point Media

It was a quiet drive, Jane checking her mirrors every so often. Not for other drivers but, for police. Her paranoia rose once they entered the city limits of the Big Apple. This was Uncle Jerry's turf, he wouldn't take too kindly to her operating in his city, not without telling him first. The man was an octopus had his hands everywhere in this city. Jane was of particular interest to him. He helped train her, taught her subterfuge, and marksmanship, he also knew everything about everyone. He didn't take it well when Jane decided to become a freelancer. He knew the kind of things she would get involved in, knew how dark the world got.

He also had the will and the power to actively disrupt Jane's life if he felt she was out of line with his morality. Maybe that was why she spent most of her time overseas, in the middle of warzones far away from what most would call civilization.

Every now and then Jane would spare a glance to Maria. She just killed a man, in cold blood in the middle of the street in front of his daughter. By all accounts she did it without hesitation. That was good, Jane didn't want to have to deal with a partner that was gunshy. You couldn't be so in most situations, it was shoot or die. She kept a look out for signs that Maria was having a night terror. The shivers, the mumbling, and occasionally screams Jane was far too used to seeing it in others, even in her own 'Aunt'.

She pulled up to the store checking the time, and the sign on the door, they got here ten minutes before they closed. Inside was a pudgy older man counting the money in the register. Jane leaned over to shake Maria awake.

"Maria," she said, "We're here." Once her partner was fully awake Jane thrust her chin towards the man inside. "Looks like only one guy on the register. You know what we're looking for, you handle the talking, I'll be there for backup. Before exiting Jane checked her pistol again.

It's a dangerous city girl had to protect herself.

    "Ready?"

She was undeniably shocked when she woke up. She had killed a man and then slept like a baby. What the hell was wrong with her?

They were in New York. They had even made it in time. She smiled at Jane for waking her up and when she saw the woman she only nodded. "Sure. I do the talking. Actually it shouldn't be that hard to get what we need." Following Janes example she also checked her gun. Actually she had not reloaded after the kill. So there were three bullets missing. It probably did not matter right now, but she was ashamed how she got distracted.

"Let us go." She opened the door, pushing the Glock under her expensive cloak and entered the telecommunications shop. She wondered if she should just shoot the man and take what she needed. No, there were easier ways to get this done. The phones were Asian and not sold in the US, she knew only the SIM cards had been bought here. She went straight for the counter, took out her wallet and took out 300 dollars. "A woman buys five SIM cards. Doesn't happen that often I bet. A few days ago. Paid in cash, I bet. Ringing any bell? Give me the numbers she bought and this is yours." She smiled at him. Being hot actually made negotiations like this a lot easier. Or play the incorruptible and you will end up with a bullet in your brain.

"Only the numbers. All I want." She kept on smiling, looking at Jane who covered her.

    The flat of Kawun Muthrango

Patience. You needed patience for the job. Not something that had come naturally to Amanda, but eventually she had learned to wait. A Antilope you killed with the ferocity of a lion. But a fly ... a fly you hunted with the patience of a spider.

The fly arrived finally. The man with the hard to spell name. It had made finding him easy. Not many Kawun Muthawhatever in the phone book.

Amanda was young for the job. Most specialized investigators had intelligence background or were at least former soldiers or cops. The only thing she had was talent and a good mentor. Well. A bit intelligence work she had done. But in her late twenties she really did not look right for her job.

She waited until the man had entered and cleared her throat then to avoid to enter the scene with too much of a surprise element. It was bad enough to wait for him in his own flat. "Do not worry, I mean no harm." She raised her hands to signal her good intentions. "You are Kawun, right? Oh man I expected someone more dangerous looking from what I heard about you and your friends." She smiled at the man. "I am here to ask you a question, that is all. Depending on the answer I might help you with your ... special situation."

She had decided the poor guy already had a pretty bad day. This should be done as gentle as possible.

    Vancover, Canada, Flat

Kawin returned to his flat to find that his fifteen minutes were down to ten. Plenty of time to grab his passport and emergency supplies since he knew where they all were. Just one, two, and pack in three. Only problem was when he got home it looked like someone else had ransacked the place, luckily as he paused a moment he didn't hear any noises of someone actively searching. Still everything was a mess, everything. Someone had been searching the flat obviously and in a most thorough fashion that bordered on ridiculous fashion. Cupboards had been ripped out, the couch had been cut open, the books had been looked through and dumped. Rushing forward he headed to where his most needed possession was, and despite everything he found his passport at the desk. At least one thing was roughly where it was supposed to be.

It was then that he heard it, the sound of someone clearing their throat, a female someone. Was it she? "Do not worry, I mean no harm." She raised her hands to signal her good intentions as he turned to look at her. Not her. "You are Kawun, right? Oh man I expected someone more dangerous looking from what I heard about you and your friends." She smiled at the man. "I am here to ask you a question, that is all. Depending on the answer I might help you with your ... special situation."

He honestly had a very confused look on his face. "Kawin, actually." he simply stated. She was sitting in the last armchair that had not been demolished and as that hit him he breathed heavy. Everything was heavy. "What. . .what do you want to know."

Jane smirked seeing Maria check her gun before exiting the car. She was learning, good. The two women entered the store Jane letting Maria take the lead. The freelancer broke away prowling, stalking the racks of items sweeping the area for anyone else. If things had to get violent, the fewer witnesses the better.

Once her sweep was done she took up a position behind Maria far enough away that she didn't interrupt the other woman's interrogation. Jane kept an eye on the entrances and exits being aware of anyone coming in or leaving. She also kept an eye on the man behind the counter. If Maria got too aggressive or if the shop keep got cagey he might reach for a gun or a bat, something to defend his shop, it was a dangerous city. If he reached for something under the counter Jane wouldn't hesitate to draw down on him.

She wondered if Maria would be just as quick. The other woman got her feet wet with the Lambs, and showed remarkably little remorse, if any. Had Jane been paired with someone just as cold blooded her, someone that can kill and feel nothing but, a rush? The only problem would be dealing with the body, or making it look like a random act of violence.

However those questions came after the shots were fired. If things go right, no one else had to die.

Kyle hit the doorway, with Sebastian right behind him. He coudlnt believe what he was seeing. Things were still frozen. Sebastian was right behind him...

    Then, it wasnt.

Cars suddenly moved. A shot. A yell.

If Kyle thought he was moving fast before, the shot motivated him to move even faster. They had to get out of sight fast! All Kyle heard was the sound of glass breaking, and spraying around Sebastian and Kyle. Kyle didnt even think of how or what had just happened. He just knew that they needed to get out of sight, and line of fire, before one of those bullets got lucky. Kyle didnt know where Sebastian might want to head, but Kyle knew the layout of the area. Plenty of buildings to duck behind, to try to lose this scumbag. This was one time Kyle hoped the cops DIDNT show up quickly. Kyle looked over towards Sebastian, wondering if he had any ideas once they cleared the front of the shop.

    The flat of Kawin

    "Kawin. Like Kevin? Okay."

He was reasonable. He did not run. He did not draw a gun. All good so far. Her hands moved a little away from her .38 and she relaxed a little. Just a little.

"So the question. The big question. The only one that really counts, I suppose. How do you and your friends ..." She took a deep breath. This was absurd, but what could she do ... "How do you guys plan to end the world?"

She had been wondering about this for the whole trip. Such an unrealistic, surreal goal. How did one end the world? A virus? Nuclear war? Not so easy to execute both plans. Super volcanoes? CERN? What could possibly end the world? Did they control meteorites? What was this about? She shrugged. She could not deny she was curious. Especially now she saw how ordinary his life was. Nothing. No plans. No secret files or a laboratory. This man ... well really no man ... had not the potential to do anything to end the world. Really.

Or was he that clever? Hiding in plain sight. Bidding his time cloaked as an ordinary person?

The crucial moment passed as Matt sank down into the couch and threw in his support. It was a radical plan, one that would no doubt produce its own set of problems, but at least he had reassurance that he would not be treading this path alone. Matt must have also realized the advantage.

"I'll call Roberts and tell him we need full disclosure to authorize the operation," Matt explained before he paused to offer a sly grin. "Naturally he will assume we know a lot more than we actually do."

Kurt hesitated for a moment as his gaze sought the graffiti art resting on the edge of his desk once more. It seemed to jeer at him, his own stylized countenance staring back at him from the page hauntingly. It was as if it was challenging him to make the next move. With a slight sneer, he pounded his fist against the image as he turned to regard Matt.

"Then we'll have to play it smart to stay in the game," he added, his tone bordering on conspiratorial. The irony of his next statement was not lost to him. "We need to gain their trust..."

"We should get some sleep," Matt suggested after a short pause. "I have the feeling the quiet times are over."

Kurt scoffed and angled his chin so that he was looking at the floor. He knew Matt was right, but sleep would not come easy…not when they had a potential crisis on their hands. He was foolish to think that the peace would last…

"I will have someone look into the murder of the Professor, just in case."

Pressing his lips into a thin line, he nodded slowly with understanding. Whoever was conducting this operation was thorough; he didn't really expect the investigation to turn up any new leads, but it wouldn't hurt to cover their bases.

When it was clear that Kurt would not be saying any more on the subject, Matt stood. "This is a strange one," he noted as he turned to leave.

"We'll figure it out," he stated as he offered a bleak smile. He tried to emanate a sense of confidence as he grasped his friend's shoulder, but they both knew it would be a difficult journey. They were entering dangerous territory, and there was no telling how things would pan out. All they could do was hope for the best.

    "Get some rest."

Kurt waited until Matt had gone before moving to join his escort out in the hall.

The return to the reality of ... time ... was harsh. The noise, the shattering glass, the shots. The door, had he ended the freezing by moving the door?

Kyle looked at him with the question in his eyes were to run. They could not run. The man would shoot them in the back. They had a chance he missed, but somehow Sebastian doubted that was much of a chance.

    "DOWN!"

He pushed Kyle to the ground and ducked behind the next best thing that could provide cover. The Guest was dedicated to kill the boy. That much was sure. Sebastian remembered he had a gun, too. But his training as a simple policeman in Germany had been ages. He was not prepared for a firefight and he did not stand a chance. But he did not have to, right? Not if he could repeat the trick. With a sigh he pulled out the gun and loaded on bullet into the chamber. "When I say now you run, Kyle. Go where we first met!" Then he closed his eyes. How? How was he doing it? Stop. Stop! STOP! It was a mental yell. A scream of his mind into a world, hoping it would respond.

Adrenaline. Fear. His senses were heightened, everything was suddenly so intense.

    STOP!

Opening his eyes he wondered if stopping time ... a physical force outside the grasp of any human technology or perception ... could really be that easy.

    STOP!

    "DOWN!"

With a squeak, Kyle hit the ground as Sebastian shoved him down. Not exactaly what he was expecting. Kyle pulled himself into a right ball, ready to move if necessary, while he watched Sebastian draw the gun he had told him about earlier. Kyle's eyes grew even larger.

"When I say now, you run, Kyle. Go where we first met!" Then Sebastian closed his eyes. Why was he closing his eyes? The older man wanted him to run back towards the school?! Well, he didnt have to go inside it. Probably not a good thing. Mickey would most likely be dealing with the tag. But at the moment, it coudlnt be any worse than being feet away from a madman trying to kill you!!

Kyle stood ready to move, once Sebastian gave him the order. He really didnt want to leave the man. What would happen to him if the guy shot Sebastian? So far, he was the only other person, who would even believe ANY of this. Kyle didnt understand it himself. How could he expect anyone else to?? Biting his lower lip, Kyle waited. As he did, one hand dug into his pack. He had a wrist rocket and some pellets in his pack. (Think of it as a high powered sling shot.)

    They might be useful.

Maria Liang, New York, New York

She was undeniably shocked when she woke up. She had killed a man and then slept like a baby. What the hell had that been about?

Kawin stood there, uneasy. "Kawin. Like Kevin? Okay." He nodded at her words, hesitantly. He had had training for irate customers, but for some reason even as he thought of the mandatory lectures he had to attend he could not think of anything that applied to this situation. What do you do in a hostage situation? Give them what they want and let the cops know about it so they can possibly rescue you. . .what do you do when you are pretty sure all they want to do is kill you politely with no emotional stressors? Die?!?

Like a deer in the headlights of car he stood there, just waiting on what she would ask next. She actually seemed to relax, as though she had something to be afraid of. Really?

    Nothing was making sense.

"So the question. The big question. The only one that really counts, I suppose. How do you and your friends ..." She took a deep breath. This was absurd, but what could she do ... "How do you guys plan to end the world?"

    .................................................................

    ...
    .

Pretty certain his brain flatlined with that question. Blinking as though to clear away something odd from his brain he looked at her not with fear, but pure confusion. "End the world?" He looked around with his mouth open and shook his head, "I get what I assume is a prank phone call telling me someone is going to kill me. What the hockey sticks! I decide to play along because my life is a boring dullness without end. I actually see someone acting suspicious as if I just won the lottery with no crew with him nor giant check, and who has the mark of one of those really bad game hunters. So I play along some more. Now my home is wrecked and I figure I just need to get out here, eh? You know maybe this is my ex-wife or a really elaborate prank but I'll play along either way. After all surely no one is out to kill me. You've seen my place. I save and pine for the one week of fishing and one week of deer hunting I can get in every year." he was going a mile a minute and was rambling but as he looked back at her he laughs as he puts a hand to his head to brush back his hair, "And now, and now you tell me that all of this. My wrecked apartment, people out to kill me, prank phone calls, all of it's real and all because someone thinks I am going to end the world? Me!?"

He laughs at this, a barking hysterical laugh as he takes off his glasses and again pinches his nose. "Lady. If you saw my collection of movies you know about the only way I know to end the world is to try calling a Borg invasion. And I know they ain't real. As for my friends, either at work and those few I go hunting or fishing with, they're concerned with how to not be sober longer than they have to most days not ending the world."

The Escort brought him to his rooms and finally there was a chance for sleep. At least everybody else was asleep already, when Kurt crawled into his bed.

The next morning he read, that Matt had send the necessary messages. Now they needed to wait for Antville to reveal itself.

Kurts day was rescheduled and he actually had time for breakfast, now that Prof. Jared would not make it to his appointment. Then a few morning memos on operations. Finally the meeting with the science council. Alternate energy, education spending, nothing too thrilling. Matt used the time to check his mobile. Then Kurt said a few things and finally it was over ... outside Morgan, his personal security for the day awaited him and handed him a mobile. Usually they only did that when matters were urgent. The Scientists were still passing by and shaking hands ... as the voice of a man at his ear greeted him.

"Mr. President, my name is Simmons and I was asked to talk to you about Antville. Please forgive me the breaking of the chain of command, but it is not easy to find a secure line nowadays."

Matt raised his brow as he saw Kurts face and took over the farewell duties.

The man behind the counter gave Maria a long look and then he smiled back. "Oh that one was a looker! Hard to forget. And who needs so many numbers?"

He typed a few words into the computer and then the printer started. The man pulled the numbers over the counter and grabbed the money. "Anything else you need?"

His smile even broadened with the last words. He had no idea what danger he was in.

    It had worked.

Sebastian could not do anything but look at the scene in complete marvel. Time, he had stopped time? He wondered if he had stopped time only here or had he ... stopped time altogether? All of time? Was the time frozen in the world? The universe?

His eyes fell on the bullets and he stepped to Kyle immediately and pushed him gently aside. "Wait here for a moment, okay? I think it is time we get some answers."

Why was Kyle not affected? Why could he still move? Had he excluded the boy by power of will? Or was he somehow immune to this?

He would have to think about this later. Through the broken glass front he stepped into the diner and made his way to the shooter. He looked at the man for a moment, then he walked over to the next barstool and looked at it ...

"Time we get some answers, right?" He prepared to grab the stool and hammer it into the man ... and then stop time and repeat this ... again and again until the man had no weapon and was on the ground ... if he could do this at will, the man had no chance against him, no matter how well trained and deadly he was.
