    Catherine Belworth (Cat)
    The Settlement

Cat was mesmerized, as they entered the settlement. Three large towers all connected, and they even had.. elevators? A huge swamp, and lots of small huts scattered about. But she didn't see anything that made her think they could have made Taul's weapon. But plenty of other weapons, handheld.

When they made it to the second bridge two children jumped at Taul and he laughed at them, speaking in his own tongue. His kids possibly? Cat smiled, but it made her feel sad, as it reminded her of her own family whom she would never see again. She nudged closer to Kasper, offering a smile, as they continued to walk.

Yara leads the group now, and as they headed for one tower, what looked like a shirtless male was standing there, leaning against the building as he smiled at Yara. Yara however, was not interested, And the smile faded from her face on seeing him. Cat looked at the man, and then back at Yara. If she didn't understand the language, she recognized the universal look he was giving her.

    Eww

Ignoring the guy, she gestured everyone to get into the elevator. Gnarling and slowly it ascended into the tower. As they reached the top a young woman opened the door. Yara nodded to her and she eyed the group with large eyes.

While all these people were so very friendly, with the way their day had gone, Cat kept a wary eye out. Things didn't usually end well for folks 'who arrival was foretold'.

"Welcome." She finally said. She quickly stepped aside and revealed a large room made mostly of wood. light-flooded it and you could oversee the jungle for miles. A single old woman in simple garments turned to them and eyed the four newcomers. The view of the place was fantastic, and it took Cat a moment to focus back to the elderly woman in front of her.

"You are the offworlders? I have to say I you to be older. The journey here must have come with unspeakable obstacles. May we offer you some juice?“ She gestured and the young woman gave each of them a cup. "You must have questions and so do we.“

Cat thought about the older woman's statement. Did they know that their planet was separated from the rest of space? Obviously, Jedi had been here before. Had they crashed, or managed to leave again? So many questions suddenly filled her mind, she almost missed as the younger woman gave them a cup. Now, Cat didn't want to be rude. But she was not drinking the cup. Not yet at least. Instead, she sniffed it, and pretended to drink from it, but waited for now. She wanted to learn more first. She waited for the brothers to speak before she would speak. She worried because she knew the insane droid had been heading in this general direction. If he was coming here, were they, enemies or friends, to him. Or simply paid dues, to keep from being cannibalized themselves? Perhaps this legend will answer some questions.

Things were supposed to get better. He’d certainly began to think they would. But he should have known better.

Kasper looked at the three towers connected by their footbridges, elevators and small huts with a measure of wonder. But all that disappeared when he saw the swamp.

    There was a swamp here.

He was convinced this was the swamp from his vision. The one with the creature. The one where….

Kasper shook his head and put his arms around his shoulders for a moment, feeling a shiver run through him. Why was this happening?

Try as he might, he attempted to focus on everything happening around him. The village and its blue inhabitants, the architecture and lack of technology, but his mind kept going back to the swamp and his vision. He hadn’t told the others, but now….he had to find a good opportunity to do so. But when?

Wordlessly, he followed, sometimes taking in a detail or two. Like the blue kids that gathered around Taul smiling. Perhaps they were his kids. It certainly seemed so by the way they were acting. Seeing their joy made him both happy and sad. Cat must have sensed it as she came closer and gave him a smile, which he happily returned. In his mind, he decided to tell her first about his vision, when he got a chance.

Everything else he half ignored. Yara and her shirtless suitor. This was nothing new. He was vaguely aware that they’d stepped into the elevator.

It wasn’t until the group arrived to see the ‘Old Woman’ that his mind came back to the present.

Kasper listened respectfully at the words spoken and politely accepted the juice offered. He drank from the cup without giving the act a second thought, while noticing that none of his friends were speaking.

Really guys? He thought at them in his head.

In his mind, he desperately wished to ask about the swamp, but that would just make him sound crazy. So, staking a step forward, he cleared his throat. *Ahem*

“Hi, pleased to meet you. I’m Kasper. And these are my friends. Cat, Teros and Resus. Yes, we are off-worlders, but from a very far away place. Does your tale say anything about our world? or anything about our journey? Or what happens now that we are here? And what about you? How long have you been here? How long ago did the jedi arrive? How many were there and how many are left?”

Kasper couldn’t help himself. The questions just came flooding out of his mouth.

“I’m sorry…” He muttered, feeling somewhat embarrassed at ho she'd blurted out his questions. He was still feeling uneasy about the swamp, even though he was trying really hard not to think about it. He definitely had to get a grip and focus.

Resus had to smile as those questions bubbled out of Kasper. He looked at the young man, but had little to add. Those were the actual questions he had himself. Only one he had to add. „And who are those creatures who attacked us?“

There really wasn‘t a lot they did not ask. He took the cup offered and as a gesture of trust he drank. He was thirsty actually and if these people wanted to do them harm, he did not see how he could keep them from doing it. Smiling at the old woman and then at his friends he nodded. „Delicious.“

The old woman smiled as the questions burst out of Kasper. „I see I was right. Many questions you have. Well, sit please. This will take a moment.“ She sat herself and sighed deeply. „Our people came here thousands of seasons ago, if the legends of old are to be believed, we arrived in a large ship from the stars. Our people were lead here by a mighty and powerful Jedi. They call her a Master in the old texts. With her she had two learners, who were entrusted to her by her order. They came here a long way from the stars beyond. Some say they were searching for the Adversary, some say they did not know about him and were surprised by his evil presence. A war was fought to overcome this Adversary, a creature as old as the planet called The Beast by our people for the lack of a name, as it predates our language. There was jealousy among the learners and one of them made a bargain with the Beast for power and betrayed the Jedi Master. She fell, leaving our first people alone here. We created this tribe and many others all over the planet and slowly we too were absorbed into the Kingdom created by the beast and the dark dynasty the fallen Jedi created to worship it. We remain subjects to the Dark Ones rule until this very day. Many attempts to free us have failed and many of our people died waging war against his armies. The last of these wars, called the winter war ended with our leader receiving a vision of the dead Jedi Master in which she gave him the prophecy. Four travelers from the stars would arrive and free us from rule of the Dark One. Three of them would be mighty warriors, some said it would be Jedi even. The fourth though would be taken by the Beast.“ She sighed. „You are four, as I happened to recognize.“ She finally turned to Resus. „Those creatures you encountered were without a doubt Cardonai. Breed by the Dark One for the hunt, trained in dark arts, they are . . . what is the word . . . his Elite.“ She lowered her gaze. „That they found you means the Dark One knows you are here. We are all in danger now.“

    Catherine Belworth (Cat)

    The Settlement, above the trees

The old woman smiled as the questions burst out of Kasper. "I see I was right. Many questions you have. Well, sit, please. This will take a moment.“ She sat herself and sighed deeply. Cat slipped down to her knees but kept alert as the woman began her story. "
Cat listened on how the people seemed to have been here thousands of years. They had the memory of the stars. And it seemed a Jedi brought them here? Why?, Cat wondered. To keep them safe? To hide them? Or perhaps they simply fell into the hole, and could not find a way out either. She wondered if the ship still existed, though it would most likely be a skeleton now.

So, a Jedi Master brought them here with two apprentices, and ended up here? When she came to the part about an Adversary, Cat thought of the Insane robot. Or maybe it was something else. Doesn't think the Jedi was looking for them unless he was rocking some seriously bad vibes The Beast? Definitely sounded like bad news. Cat frowned and looked sad as she heard about how the learner's had issues with each other, so one went to the beast for power, and killed the Master. Why? What could they gain while stuck here? What power to gloat over some poor people who didn't have much chance to begin with? Even here, in what should be a paradise, there always seemed to be problems. Cat sighed softly.

Cat became very attentive when she mentioned how THEY were subjects of the Dark One's rule but fought against the creature. That was good. But then she told them of the prophecy...

".. Four travelers from the stars would arrive and free us from the rule of the Dark One. Three of them would be mighty warriors, some said it would be Jedi even. The fourth though would be taken by the Beast..."

THAT cut a little close to home. Cat looked at her friends as the woman continued. She sighed. "You are four, as I happened to recognize." Cat thought of the prophecy. And one is supposed to be taken by the beast? Well, there was an appetizing thought. Why did it seem like the entire galaxy was after them? What suddenly made them a hot commodity?! Course, if they were lucky, maybe the beast would take the man who caused them to crash down here in the first place.

The woman finally turned to Resus. "Those creatures you encountered were without a doubt Cardonai. Breed by the Dark One for the hunt, trained in dark arts, they are . . . what is the word . . . his Elite." Cat bit her lip to keep from letting a curse fly. She lowered her gaze. "That they found you means the Dark One knows you are here. We are all in danger now." Cat looked sad at that thought. Hate to think that it would be them that caused these people harm. Cat wondered if any of these folks were force users. After all, why would the Jedi have lead her people here? Cat suddenly thought of something.

"When our ship came down, I noticed a light. A beacon perhaps. Do you know what is near that area?" she asked gently. She then gave a look over at Kasper. They were being hunted all over again. With possibly quite a few creatures to worry about.

    Wonderful.

He felt a chill run through his body, as he realized what was about to happen here. There was a dynasty of tyrants in place obviously worshipping a deity called the Beast, which might or might not be real. If the story the old woman was true - she certainly did not lie, but he realized this had to be oral tradition and things changed over time when a story was told again and again - then this all happened thousands of years ago. So whatever the Beast had been had to be very long-lived to still exist. Then again, . . . he began to realize what was going on here. Did the droid not say he needed spaceports to fulfill his duty? What was his duty? Keeping people from the planet?

The prophecy of the four was disturbing of course. Because four was a rather typical starship crew. Pilot, Co-pilot, gunner, engineer. Technically they had been six. With Permond and K-1 being crew, too. But now here they stood, four of them and these people believed they were some sort of chosen ones. Which they certainly were not. They had just been roughed up by a bunch of insects. Teros was the only one who had shown any talent in battle, as he had kept a calm head and killed one of those things. The rest of them had been a desaster until Taul appeared. Slowly shaking his head he listened to Cat and nodded. The beacon. Good question.

But his mind truly wandered of to the prophecy. Three were to be heroes and one taken by the Beast. If he assumed this was somehow true, he knew who had been marked by the Beast. Had the Beast the one to contact him? Or this Dark Master?

„So there is a Dark God called the Beast and a fallen Jedi you named the Dark Master, right? That one got a dynasty? This dynasty rules of these insects? How many are there?“ He asked and wondered if they had brought certain doom to these people. „Because I believe I know who they are after.“ He added that with a sigh and was not entirely sure it had been exactly a wise move.

The last statement made Teros look aside at his brother. The whole story sounded a lot like superstition. These people mistook a plasma cutter for a lightsaber and believed their savior had showed up. Problem was they were no savior. They were four kids stranded on an unknown planet, hunted, helpless and happy to find someone for once who was not hostile. He wanted nothing to do with Dark Gods. The adults should take care of this, not some kids.

„Well, sorry to disappoint you, but I think we are not who you waited for. None of us ever trained to be a Jedi or even got near an academy. I only know about Jedi from holo-dramas. We got lost here through the hands of a droid and now we want a way to go home. Well, our planet is gone, but home into the Republic, the part of space we come from.“ He gave an insecure smile.

It came on slowly, but suddenly. A flood of emotion he could not stop.

Teros had recounted their journey and probably spoke the raw truth for them all. They weren’t here to rescue anyone, but to be rescued. That was their hope. They only wished to return home.

    But where was home?

Kasper though of his mum, saw her face, felt her hug him good-bye. Was feeling the crushing emptiness of not having her reassuring presence, of hearing her loving voice.

All he knew now was fear, fatigue, betrayal and death. He felt so tired and alone all of a sudden. He tried to fight these feeling, but they would not be denied.

Kasper bowed his head down and brought up his hands to cover his face. His shoulders shook as he quietly sobbed into them. Ashamed at his moment of weakness.

Cat was holding up much better than he was. Resus and Teros had each other.

But who did an adopted silver haired boy with no last name have?

It didn’t matter. He just needed the moment to past the moment. He would be fine as long as he stuck with his friends.

The answer had not been meant to have such and impact, but he saw Kasper fight with his emotions and finally loose. As he sobbed Teros understood all too well. The journey had begun with them loosing their planet and had only turned from one nightmare to another since then. Now it seemed they again were in danger and they were alone and lost. Kasper probably even worse than him, who had his brother. Raising his hand to keep the Old Woman from saying anything he stepped over to Kasper and not knowing what to say gave him a simple hug. "It is alright, I know how you feel man." He whispered and held his friend ... because that was what they were now - friends.

He saw his friend bury his face in his hands and it was his brother of course who knew what to do, while Resus still stood there embarrassed and helpless. Teros went over and hugged Kasper. A simple gesture, yet one he could not remember ever seeing from Teros. He looked at Cat and then shrugged, getting over to Kasper and embracing him and Teros, too. He looked to Cat and nodded, to invite her to join.

    Well..that was unexpected.

Kasper had started to break down, sobbing. Cat was going to step over, but then Teros came over and gave Kasper a hug. Teros then looked at her, shrugged, and then he walked over to give Kaser and embrace to both of them as well. Cat nodded her head and smiled. It was a strange family, but it was her family now. Unless any others made it away, they were all that they had from their home. Cat turned, and gave a small bow towards the Old Woman before she went over and hugged the entire group. It had been a difficult and hard couple of days. Cat had been holding back herself, simply because with everyone and everything trying to kill them, she had no time. Her time would be later. But now, she needed to be strong for the group.

Cat did ruffle Kasper's hair a bit, sa she then leaned over and whispered softly into Kasper's ear, "You're not alone, little brother." she added a small smile, as she backed up. Cat scanned the room, and to the view outside, which stretched out far and wide. She gave a small sigh.

Cat then looked back towards the old woman, hoping that she would not forget her question about the light.

The old woman waited for the scene to pass. „Well, whatever is your destiny young man, I can assure you, that you all got the heart of a Jedi.“ She smiled. „The beacon is Iria Bachun, that is the city of Calek, the Northern Lord. He serves the Dark Master and commands the Cardonnai here. How many they are? Nobody knows. They are deeply hidden in their hives. But there are more of them then there are stars they say. They constantly grow more and more.“

Nodding to the younger girl she turned their back to the four. „You should rest now, you look exhausted and what lies in front of you will demand strength.“ She sighed. „Liara will show you the quarters.“

He hadn’t expected it, but he definitely welcomed everyone’s reaction.

Kasper held on tightly to each one of them for a solid moment. Resus, Teros, Cat. It was not just nice, it was what his heart needed. The assurance of family, that he could count on the three closest people he had, the ones who faced every hardship just as he.

"It is alright, I know how you feel man."

Teros’s voice was strong, steady and reassuring.

Resus's honest proximity was equally so, no words were needed from the intellectual youth.

    "You're not alone, little brother."

Cat’s words were a much needed comfort. Ruffling his hair made him laugh, and for that moment, the world was as right as a picnic in a sunny park.

“Thank you guys.” Kasper managed to say, looking up to everyone.

“Sorry about that…won’t happen again, promise.” He said, now wiping his tears with his hands.

“None of us is going with the Beast.” Kasper suddenly declared, maybe a little more defiantly than he’d intended to, his gaze turning to the Old woman.

“But we’ll help you just the same.” He added with sincerity.

Killer Droids, Dark Masters and Treacherous reptiles. Yes, they could use a rest from all of it.

He was more than ready to follow Liara to his quarters.

He was not tired enough to leave his curiosity unsatisfied, he knew that. But he had the feeling that his time was limited now, so he had to know if there was anything he could do about it, He let the others follow Liara and turned instead to Yara. „Care to show me around the settlement before we go to sleep? I would love to know a little more about you’re people. If you do not care too much me wasting your time.“ He gave her an insecure smiled, he really felt like it was harder to speak to her because she was a girl. He had little experience with those.

Cat looked over when Resus stated that he wanted to look around. She smiled at him, and slowly nodded before she turned her attentions back to Teros and Kasper. She was curious too, but she was a bit tired. It seemed that the mission was to get rest when you can because you never knew when you might get to rest. But Cat didnt think she would sleep well. But she would stay close to the others, and watch over them.

Because if the old woman was right, those Cardonnai might come back for round two. And Cat might have to get used to swinging this weapon she now carried before it came time to use it..

He was silent. He really had nothing to add. Rest would be appreciated after the long walk and he knew they would need all their strength soon enough. Something was wrong with Resus, he saw it in his little brothers eyes, but he knew better then to confront him about it. You did not get anything out of Resus, if he did not wanted to share. Resus obviously did not think about resting. His body had to be exhausted, but the young one always was kept going by his mind. Yet, Teros had not forgotten his brother had „felt“ the attack coming. How can you feel something like this? Was Resus strong in the force? What did that mean if he was? Anyway, what he had done reminded him a lot of the holo-films about Jedi he had seen, where a Jedi dramatically said he „felt danger“ and then some villains showed up and tried to kill him. Just Resus was no Jedi. He could probably hardly run a mile, Teros thought.

He followed Liara and the others silently to whatever quarters were prepared. In the primitive elevator he sighed finally. „At least we are among friends.“ He said with a smile.

Kasper, Teros and Cat were brought down the elevator to a small building made of wood, where three beds and refreshments were awaiting them. Outside the saw two guards with metal spears and simple robes who greeted them friendly, as they arrived. Taul was sitting nearby at a fire, working on his bow and smiling at the three as they arrived. The beds were the most comfortable they had since leaving home.

Yara smiled at Resus and nodded. „It would be my pleasure, young Resus. Shall we begin by visiting the three towers?“ She asked and when they left the elevator she began walking towards the next. „One is for our Great Mother, one is for our hunters and one for those who keep things. Those who preserve our stories. I am sure they are right now working on yours.“ Yara smiled at him, as she walked with Resus into the village. „There is a lake nearby from where we can oversee most of the village. A really beautiful place. Do you desire to see it?“

She looked into his eyes as she spoke. Resus had probably at least an intellectual concept of flirting. Yara was obviously more a practioner of it.

Cat walked with Teros and Kasper as they moved to an elevator, to a small building made of wood. Here there was a lot of food and drink waiting for them. Three beds. Three? Why not four? There were guards standing outside who smiled at them as they arrived. Guards here, why? Was it to safeguard them or entrap them? She didn't want to think ill of their guests. But after recent events, Cat could not help but wonder of such things. She saw Taul working on how bow. He looked up and smiled, and she returned the gesture. Cat scanned the room. The beds looked so comfortable. She touched it, and it felt wonderful. But no. She would sleep later.

"Liara.." Cat called out to the girl showing them around. "There are four of us, and only three beds,,,?" she asked the girl. Perhaps they ment for one of them to sleep someplace .. else? But even before sleep, Cat really wanted a bath...because...well, because she needed it. She waited to see if she would get a response. Only after the girl was long gone, did do what she needed to do next.

Cat unslung the small plasma cutter Resus had given her. She flicked it off and on a few times. She moved away from Kasper and Teros, and flexed the weapon while it was off in her hands a few times. Her skills lay in gymnastics. So she began with some tumbles and falls, rolling and moving with the weapon. Getting used to its weight, and how it felt in her hands. As she moved with it, she checked for any other knobs and controls on it. She wanted to be able to use this thing with her eyes closed if need be.

As she practiced, she recalled what the older woman had told them.

/„The beacon is Iria Bachun, that is the city of Calek, the Northern Lord. He serves the Dark Master and commands the Cardonnai here. How many they are? Nobody knows. They are deeply hidden in their hives. But there are more of them then there are stars they say. They constantly grow more and more.“/ So no hope of getting out that way. But there was something else. Those strange stone statues. Perhaps, they held a key.

Cat felt sorry for these people. They were looking for someone to save them. Instead, they got three kids. They were probably a disappointment. Cat sighed softly. Considering what they had gone through so far, they had all changed. And they would survive this too.

Cat figured out a way to sling the weapon around her and then sat on the floor, as she wondered what was next.

He didn’t have many words at this time, but did mind his manners and said a polite ‘thank you’ when he was supposed to, he even managed a weak smile now and again.

Kasper’s mind was filled with many thoughts, some which conflicted with one another.

He had one more year before officially selecting a last name, less than that now really. He had decided on one, but hadn’t told his Mum as he wanted it to be a surprise. He’d given her the impression that he had selected some ‘meaningful’ name, but in truth, he had selected that of the woman who had raised him and cared for him all these years.

But that woman was gone. Would it mean anything to take on her name now?

Other similar thoughts ran amok through his mind.

Thoughts of the small group of friends also fought for dominance. If age four of them were needed for this terrible prophecy to come true, he could run away, and that way prevent events form coming true. If he took K-1 with him, the droid would help him survive.

He wasn’t like the others. Why keep pretending that he was.

Despite these thoughts, Kasper did remain alert. He'd nodded at the polite guards, but frowned as soon as he moved past them. Why place armed guards at their door? It only made him suspicious. The food was welcomed- even delicious, was it their last meal? That was more cause for suspicion. He really didn't want to seem ungrateful or unkind. These people had saved them.

Blue eyes searched the rest of the room and spied only three beds.

At first, he hadn’t really thought much about it, as he assumed that Cat would simply be placed with other women. That hadn’t mattered at all before, so he shrugged it off. But when Cat herself called attention to this fact, his suspicion deepened.

He too waited for the response as to why there were only three beds instead of four.

    Was he being paranoid- again?

Cat had asked the girl, Yara, who seemed smitten with Resus. Kasper found himself smiling and secretly rooting for the his brainy friend- maybe he’d get a kiss from the pretty girl.

But then, his mind veered to a dark place. What is Resus was being separated from them? What if these people had agreed to…no, no, that didn’t make sense. He was really being paranoid now.

Kasper shook his head. He was tired and hungry and needed some sleep, but despite his body being tired, his mind was too wound up to allow that to happen.

Watching Cat practice with the plasma cutter, Kasper felt the desire to do some practice kata of his own, but was simply too tired to follow through with that impulse. So instead, he sat himself in lotus position atop one of the beds.

Kasper crossed his legs, placed his hands on his knees and closed his eyes, he then let out a long exhale and began circular-breathing. He needed to clear his mind. He also needed to see what he was doing wrong.

Twice he had been sucker punched, much to his embarrassment. Was he the weak link of the group?

That would be bad. But if so, he needed to know, so he could identify what he needed to correct.

Rhythmically he breathed and emptied his mind of worries. Only in this manner, he would have a chance to see things objectively.

At least that was his hope.

He assumed the guest house naturally had only three beds. It was the most logical explanation why there were only three.

Cat began to practice with the smaller plasma cutter. He watched her for half a minute and hoped she did not turn it on too much. These things ran on battery.

Kasper tried to calm himself with breathing. Resus was off chasing girls. All he could thinking was sleeping. So he rested his head on the quite comfortable bed and closed his eyes. He fell asleep almost instantly.
