Lit The Empire's future: the First Order, or the Fel Dynasty & Imperial Knights?

Think National Treasure, only Star Wars-style. Nicholas Cage as one of the Rebel spies, and his character's father as a Rebel officer/handler.

But back to the topic at hand. Even though technically there was a break in the continuity of the Empire in Legends, the Imperial Remnant was clearly meant to be the spiritual successor of the Galactic Empire.

The First Order, on the other hand, just a fan boys club basically.

 

I keep going back to Marvel comics for this but I think Snoke has his own ideas on how the galaxy should work. Whether he's an ex-Imperial ala the Red Skull or some kind of ancient evil supernatural being, I get the idea he's much more obsessed with loyalty and ideology than Palpatine was. Palpatine recruited a bunch of incredibly self-interested murderous jerkasses who were only interested in what they could get from the Empire while Snoke has tried to make a First Order which is all into the belief structure of the First Order.

I don't think Snoke wants to resurrect the Empire if Gallius Rax is any indication but make something similar but reformed.

 

Wasn't one of the attempts successfully sabotaged (as opposed to Disra's attempts in the HOT duology), and wasn't Thrawn involved in that sabotage?

 

The Noghri were - it's not clear if Thrawn was. Given the "Palpatine Reborn was the one who arranged that the Noghri Rukh assassinate Thrawn" theory - maybe something similar could apply to Ederlathh?

It wouldn't be the first time he'd killed members of his own family after all.

Incomparable. One was a strongly covered up event, while the other was Saturday Morning Cartoon villainy. When you cover up something, there is regret, or rather realization that it isn't going to be well-accepted by the public. That's Project Starscream. Operation Cinder is basically openly going 'we are evil, we will kill everything now that we have lost even though we still have 25k Star Destroyers and the Rebel Alliance is still a small faction'.

There's hundreds of EU stories, few if any posters love all of them and those that some greatly dislike will be your favourites or vice versa. If you truly want to discuss all the variois books and comics of Legends, then you need a way of accepting that.

 

To be fair, that was the plan of one Admiral which never really got off the ground. It also would have been a monumental failure given Emperor Palpatine was alive and unwell in the Deep Core. I'd like to mention I think a large part of why I enjoy the Nu Canon is because it's a combination of Dark Empire and The Hand of Thrawn into one single story element without either story's more silly beats.

 

Well in that case go the whole hog and bring in Megatron, Soundwave and Shockwave.

 

I do notice they really are doubling down on the Empire=Nazis thing in the Nu Canon. Operation: Cinder seems very much like Hitler's order to destroy Germany.
