Yeah, I made that observation on another board. This time, dictators won't need the equivalent of the Waffen SS when a missile will do.

No need for either when you can just take over without firing a shot.

The first half of the 20th century is my favourite era in history. My favourite historical event was World War 2, an epic battle of good vs evil. In a weird way, I hope a bit that we are going to get World War 3 soon (likely China vs the US), just because it would be very epic.

Uhh well, WWII is certainly interesting to read about...70 years after the fact. Actually living through it? Probably much less so.

I actually believe it was heroic and glorious. I especially like the planes and ships of the era. World War 1, too. I wish for World War 3 just because it would be cool and adventureous.

Oookkay...assuming this is not a troll attempt...

I like my war movies and video games as much as the next guy. But at the end of the day, a hell of a lot of people died in those wars. Nobody should be looking forward to another one.

@Chewgumma: lol, I was just looking for that exact pic.

So, yeah, war really really sucks for the people who lived through it. One of the reasons the EU was formed was to create peace between European nations.

Ooh, what was your favorite part? The German invasion of the Soviet Union? The firebombing of Tokyo? The several genocides?

I suspect his favourite part of WW2 is when he got a 360 no scope in Call of Duty.

Living through terrorist attacks, multiple wars, multiple recessions, a pandemic, the return of nationalism worldwide, and climate change isn't adventurous enough?

If you see it as that, you haven't studied it extensively. To give one simple example of how murky it gets: in 1944, in the bocage Normand, US tank corps paid a heavy price to German Tiger tanks built by German companies which were subsidiaries of US businesses in 1941. US money killed US tankers.

Dude, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. What an ignorant thing to say (and because of that, I assume that you are American).

My grandparents were kids during that period. And if they were still alive, they would tell you that World War 2 was absolutely not the heroic, glorious, cool and adventurous thing you make it out to be. When I was younger, they told me lots of stories about hunger and, in the case of my maternal grandmother, loosing their home.

That period was the most horrible in European history with millions of lifes lost. What did the US have.... Pearl Harbour and 9/11. And those were undoubtdely tragic events, but the US never experienced destruction on such a grand scale like Europe did.

Therefore, to say that World War 2 was glorious and adventurous is offending to me as a European.

I have a friend with severe PTSD from his time in the services. A quick chat with him would dispel anybody of the notion that warfare can ever be epic, cool or glorious.

It’s fine to enjoy military history (I find the American Civil War fascinating) and to appreciate the warships and fighter planes of a particular era. It’s also fine to watch a war movie and enjoy the action (I love Full Metal Jacket and Platoon). But anyone who actively wishes for another world war doesn’t really understand what they’re asking for. It would be hell on earth.

My Uncle Harold (He wasn't my actual uncle, it was what I was raised to call him.) partially raised me. He was a WWII veteran and had to drink whisky throughout the day to numb the memories of watching his friends die.

My grandmother is old enough to remember the sheer terror of the blitz.

They'd both try to kick the ass of anyone who wanted another World War to happen. (Especially my belated Uncle Harold. I got my extreme hatred for the Nazi ideology from him.)

And if people want to be dismissive of the European theater, they should study the Pacific theater and the battles of Iwo Jima, and that's not getting into the pre-1941 campaigns by Japan in China.

Either way, it is stupid to call WWII a glorious and heroic war.

Pearl Harbor, D-Day, exotic German warplanes and libertarian socialism in Catalonia. Not sure if the latter counts as WWII, the Spanish Civil War was like its dress rehearsal.
Je ne suis pas américain. Bien, c'est ton opinion. À mon avis, la Seconde Guerre mondiale était le plus grand événement historique de tous les temps.

You might not be American, unfortunately I'm not allowed to say what you are though.

You want countless people to murder each other just because you're bored with life. That's just monstrous.
