    Kira Romar
    The Garden

Kira waited for someone else to go first as she thought about the lesson given. She had little experience with the Dark Side of the force, none actually. Finally she voiced her own opinion.

"He should be allowed to continue under supervision. We must trust a Jedi to learn his own lessons and he has not done anything wrong. If the Dark Side has such destructive power the Jedi must learn about it though."

    The Garden

He had approval from the Master, and Li bowed in appreciation of his acknowledgment.

But the Master had much on his mind, and he took in everyone with a nod. There was quite a crowd, now. Li sat, feeling the current of the Force bending towards a lesson.

"Well, so today we shall talk about the Dark Side." Master Kran's gaze went to Kira with an agreeing nod. He signalled the last of them still standing to sit with a firm nod. Li pushed aside his pleasure at having interpreted the Master correctly.

"So eagerly you thirst for knowledge, yet so little you know about it's true nature. That is to be expected, because the Dark Side is treacherous. Look at today's events: Violence, you used violence against each other today. You were celebrating the act of fighting. For a Jedi all life is sacred. Only if he is forced to take a life he will end it and always he should feel regret about it. Whenever the order went to war, it had only one consequence. The rise of the Dark Side! Wars give birth to suffering, suffering leads to fear and fear inevitably leads to anger and hate. The Dark Side of the Force feeds on these feelings and grows stronger. It corrupts every living thing and that includes young over-eager Jedi." Li absorbed the words, and then Master Kran sighed. His eyes showed so terribly that he knew what he talking about. Li felt a spike of fear, but also curiosity, and for a moment the broken artefact his father had left him came to mind. But Master Kran pressed on.

"So how do we fight the Dark Side? With a lightsaber? If it comes to this, it is already a failure of the Jedi. So today's lesson: I wish you to imagine one of your peers has given in to curiosity and has begun to study the ancient teachings of the Dark Side. Of course you try to talk him out of it, but he refuses to leave his path and you sense pride and anger in him." Master Kran let his eyes wander from on student to the other. Li met those eyes, firmly, resolutely, determined to do what was right.

"You report him to the council and the council asks for your advise. What is your advise? Should he be exiled? Should he be allowed to continue so he might see the wrong of his own actions? Should he be confronted at the danger of violence? Should he be executed? Should he be imprisoned? Or should you join his cause to prevent him from diving too deep?" Master Kran shrugged. "Or is there another alternative?" He unfolded his hands and spread his arms in an inviting gesture.

"Who wants to go first?" He asked and Li found himself wondering if this was a lesson or a test - it was intentionally left unclear. Li dwelt on that first, before grappling with the question, perhaps costing himself time, perhaps simply mulling as he truly should. Li was not a fan of open ended lessons, as they relied entirely upon you, rather than the true answer... but of course, that was the answer.

A voice cracked his thoughts apart, decisive as ever.

"He should be allowed to continue under supervision. We must trust a Jedi to learn his own lessons and he has not done anything wrong. If the Dark Side has such destructive power the Jedi must learn about it though." Kira responded first, as ever, and he felt her eagerness press upon him in the Force.

Li shook his head, and stood. "I believe that is incorrect. Supervised, yes, but to continue on? No. He should be made to start over; surrender his lightsaber and become a trainee anew. They have failed to master their old lessons, and we risk training our enemy if we continue onwards. If they cannot master our first lessons, then continuing onwards would merely place more pressure on foundations that are already weak."

The Jedi Padawan pressed his lips together with resolve. "Respectfully, Padawan Romar, that is."

Then he looked back to the others. "If he refuses, then he must be stripped of his ability to do harm, be it by imprisonment or more severe methods if he cannot be imprisoned to be rehabilitated."

    Garden of the Enclave

Elysa smirked at Kira's answer. It was certainly wrong. So was Akeem's. A liberal tolerance like this would possibly lead to hundreds of dead, millions if they were unlucky. Li showed reason and understanding and stole her answer basically.

"Well, maybe there is a reason why studying these things is forbidden. I fully agree with Li, we cannot allow the enemy to rip us apart. If he wanted the Dark Side, he should not have joined the Jedi Order."

Pretty sure she had given the right answer she folded her arms.

    Pro-XE
    The Garden, Jedi Enclave, Elyseum

The droid remained very still as he began recording, so still in fact, it was likely the students would forget he was even there.

Pro-XE scanned the small group in every conceivable manner, which would resemble a clinical endeavor. He recorded their voices, measured tonal changes, their biometric responses, psycho-somatic reactions, thermal variances, anything that was interpretable to denote stress or elation and everything else in-between.

Despite his own capability at determining mood or state of mind via extrapolation, Master Kran would always derive far more accurate data than he thought possible. That is why he was the Master, after all.

Even as he recorded, Pro-XE continued his remote surveillance of the Academy grounds and nearby surroundings. He knew to leave nothing to chance. Especially since safeguarding the enclave and everyone within, was his primary function.

    Tanee Bolyn
    The Garden, Jedi Enclave

As Tanee entered the gardens, she could feel that others were waiting here as well. Not wanting to keep everyone waiting, she quickly found a place to sit and laid her staff across her lap. Within the Force, she felt the area was a swirl of various emotions ripple and swirl around her. It made her feel a bit better, amid her own swirl of emotions. And there was something else. New people. Now she was a bit curious but known that Master Kran would explain things in his own time, she simply waited. She felt as the Master reached out to all of them, something he usually did when a lesson was about to begin.

"Well, so today we shall talk about the Dark Side."

Tanee turned her head slightly, wondering what brought on the talk about this subject. She soon found out as the Master continued.

"So eagerly your thirst for knowledge, yet so little you know about its true nature. That is to be expected because the Dark Side is treacherous. Look at today's events: Violence, you used violence against each other today. You were celebrating the act of fighting." Mentally, Tanee felt herself relax. Something had happened elsewhere, and a fight broke out? Perhaps during dueling training.

So Tanee listed as the Master spoke of how all life was sacred to the Jedi, and how the Dark Side gave way to suffering, fear, anger and hate. How a Dark side could get stronger listening to those things, and corrupt everything. His voice..it reminded her slightly that it kind of sounded like Canos. Then, Master Kran asked a question.

"So today's lesson: I wish you to imagine one of your peers has given in to curiosity and has begun to study the ancient teachings of the Dark Side. Of course, you try to talk him out of it, but he refuses to leave his path and you sense pride and anger in him." Master Kran let his eyes wander from one student to the other.

"You report him to the council and the council asks for your advice. What is your advice? Should he be exiled? Should he be allowed to continue so he might see the wrong of his own actions? Should he be confronted with the danger of violence? Should he be executed? Should he be imprisoned? Or should you join his cause to prevent him from diving too deep?" Master Kran shrugged. "Or is there another alternative?"

Tanee was silent for a moment, as she listened to the others. Elysa's answer was a bit baffling to Tanee. But the girl believed that such things should not be studied. Li's response was a bit darker. "If he refuses, then he must be stripped of his ability to do harm, be it by imprisonment or more severe methods if he cannot be imprisoned to be rehabilitated."

Kira's response was that "the student should be allowed to continue under supervision. We must trust a Jedi to learn his own lessons and he has not done anything wrong. If the Dark Side has such destructive power the Jedi must learn about it though."

The one called Akeem'nun also believed that they should be allowed to pursue the teachings.

Tanee frowned slightly as she thought about the question and the responses she had heard so far. It made her recall her own personal brush with such things. She breathed in deeply, calming herself. After there was a bit of silence, she spoke.

"It is a difficult question to answer because each experience is different. But I believe the person should be lead to turn away from such studies. If you are feeling the pride and anger within the student, then they have already begun their turn. Their continued studies would only bring more confusion and distress to those around them. Because if they are feeling anger, that causes them to do things that they otherwise might not have done." Tanee shifted in her seat slightly, uncomfortable with the memory. She continued, "Even if they believe that they are doing it for a good or just cause, the Dark side will eventually twist it. The moment that you put yourself above others, then you are in danger."

Tanee shrugged her shoulders slightly. "As for what to do to that person, I think it should be measured depending on what was done. A student can be shown the dangers, and why it is important to listen to the warnings. Someone who has caused injury or damage.." Tanee paused for a moment before she continued. "will have to be dealt with more harshly. But, there is still a chance, if that person can be made to see the error..no, the dangers of such a path. Only if there is no hope left, or to protect life.." Tanee took in a deep breath before she finished. "Should the most sever methods should be used, Master."

With that said, Tanee grew quiet once more, glad she could not see the looks towards her.

    Garden of the Jedi Enclave

He had expected something else. They were not swinging lightsabers, but instead engaged into a philosophical discussion about what was right or wrong and how to deal with something called the Dark Side, which seemed to be a corrupting force of evil they considered their enemy.

"Is it always like that?" Janis asked Sy, who he felt was not here for the first time. The look the man called Master Kran had not escaped his attention.

The students answered one by one, all taking their positions and advocating them. Janis found something else much more interesting. There was an advanced droid called ProXe. He had never seen a droid like this! How he would love to have a look at it's mechanics.

    Gardens, Jedi Academy

There was no time for a reprieve. Master Kran jumped right into the next lesson shortly after Arek had entered the garden with the new arrivals. He did not even have a chance to bid them well before he found himself back in the circle with the other apprentices. Of course, he did not argue and simply took his seat as directed, but he found himself distracted. He kept thinking about the boy and his mother – if things will improve, or if they had arrived too late to make any meaningful impact on her condition.

He was so engrossed in these thoughts, that he failed to immediately respond to the discussion pertaining to the Dark Side. It wasn’t until Li offered his opinion that Arek was finally able to find his focus. He tentatively agreed with the young man’s assessment and canted his head to convey that to him across the distance that separated them, though he felt his muscles tense when Elysa provided a follow-up:

"Well, maybe there is a reason why studying these things is forbidden,” she replied evenly. “I fully agree with Li, we cannot allow the enemy to rip us apart. If he wanted the Dark Side, he should not have joined the Jedi Order."

Arek pursed his lips and lowered his gaze as he began to idly pick at the grass around his feet. If only that were true; what happened in special circumstances? All he could think about was back when he was ten-years-old – he had inadvertently used the Force to lash out at his best friend. He hadn’t meant to cause him harm. It had just…happened.

“The choice may not always be that simple,” he finally spoke, lifting his chin to regard his colleagues. “In many cases, the Dark Side is already a part of us. It’s about balance and how we learn to maintain that balance inside ourselves to prevent such a fall. It’s about control.”

His eyes shifted toward Li and then to the blind girl, one corner of his mouth turning up into a small smile. “With that said, I agree with Tanee that if one of us should start down that path, then it is the duty of the others to discourage that behavior. But if we can’t achieve that goal and meet a satisfactory level, then I think Li proposes an appropriate response.”

    The Forest near the Academy

When the one that called himself Ryyz walked out from where he was, there was no longer the question of where the other was anymore. Knowing they were human made understanding the slow solid steps that he heard. The crunch of the underfoot vegetation telling him about the others boots and weight of the man. He was weighed down, likely carrying supplies or a heavy weapon. Still it had spoken as well, male, and he had the scent of the man now he could likely never ever truly hide from him again.

"I am Trrff. I am glad you do not want to fight, I am likely late already and do not feel like carrying a body." he simply stated. Honesty so far had been the best policy, it had kept him from masters less able to cope with teaching him and brought him here after all. "Would you like to walk with me? Or are you more adverse to settlement dwellings then I am?" he asked as he wavered upon his legs. Just waiting for an answer before he would continue onward.

The Jedi Master nodded at every answer letting it go unchallenged. Varik answered finally.

"Confront him. If it comes to violence that is the price for ripping this root out by the grows." He said and folded his arms convinced he was right no matter what the Master said.

Master Kren again nodded and finally turned to the youngest of the assembled.

"Silo?" He asked and the boy looked at him.

"Exile. If he ignores the council's wishes he is no Jedi anymore." The boy said avoiding eye contact to any of the others.

Master Kran nodded thoughtfully and lowered his hands for a moment. The apprentice felt his powerful presence as he reached out searching their feelings.

ProXe received a silent alarm. Something had attracted the attention of the movement sensors. Could be the missing student or an animal. Yet, it was noteworthy to a droid. These things often became patterns.

ProXe knew the story of the colleague with too much curiosity in him. He had not been in the service of his Master by then, but over the years he had understood it was not the legendary disregard of orders to wage a war against the Chiss that got Master Kran beyond the edges of the sphere of influence of the Jedi, no that little crusade had been the end of a development that had begun with the Jedi Council, a young Kran and a friend. It was the first time the droid heard him speak about it with Apprentices.

Master Kren turned suddenly to the knew arrivals. His gaze was firm and penetrating. "What do our guests say?" He asked and his hands unfolded.

    Sy Isky
    Temple Gardens

"Pretty much." Sy said to Janis at his question. It was usually like this, the master asking a question and watching his students poke around in the darkness. It wasn't Sy's favorite part but it was necessary to know what each person believed and where changes needed to be made. He stood letting the conversation go on around him, hearing only every now and again. Already he felt like he was back being the student, the learner at the feet of the master. However he wasn't that wide eyed kid that came to the temple over a decade ago. He had years of the 'real' world on him, and sometimes not doing the kindest of things.

"Uhhh..." He stammered when the master turned the question to him and Janis. He was unprepared for this. "Just reading the stuff, that's not the issue...I've read about a lot things, things that would shock a lot of people...I'd never do them...or in some cases use them. It's when they start using what they learn, tapping into the darkside that you start taking action. Though incarceration may not be the best option. Isolating them with only there thoughts could send them into a spiral, or have them talking to themselves in days." He said speaking from recent personal experience. "Exile, well it gets them out but, does it stop their curiosity? They could dive deeper and deeper and possibly hurt someone. It's a bad situation all around. It would have to be taken one at a time...I don't know if this is a One Size fits all sort of thing...in the end...there are just some people...that need killing..." Again his experiences painted his view, being a Bounty Hunter he had a front row seat to the depravity of beings. Both on the side of the law, and not. And yes there are just beings in this galaxy that don't belong in it. Monsters that take perverse pleasure in killing, and if not stopped they will keep killing.

    Janis
    Garden of the Enclave

The Master had taken him by surprise. The answer of Sy did the same. How did it even cross their mind to kill someone for something like that. Janis looked at Sly and cleared his throat.

"I ... I know nothing about such things." He said and hoped it was done with that. Then his mind clicked and he felt this was probably the wrong perspective.

"This council seems to be pretty afraid of him and what he reads though. Not wanting to be ... assuming, but does fear not lead to anger and anger to suffering? Someone said that. The council should be worried if they are not as much subject to this spiral than this curious Jedi. The sudden lack of loyalty to one of their own ... I feel it is ... another kind of evil. Imprison him? Exile him? Confront him? Kill him!? I thought the Jedi is a brotherhood of sorts? So if one steps out of line it seems to become oppressive very fast. Everyone who disobeys faces retribution? I hope the Jedi are not run by a cabal of Masters considering that the way. They should take every effort to help him. Whatever the true problem is."

He knew his words were probably wrong, but he knew this was a test of honesty as well.

"What did you do, Master? This happened to you, didn't it?" He asked following a hunch this was not an entirely made up situation.

    Pro-XE
    The Garden, Jedi Enclave, Elyseum

No one would be the wiser, with the exception of Master Kran, as Pro-XE remained immobile while still recording the group session. The advanced droid responded instantly to the silent alarm. The security system indicated exactly which sensor was tripped, as well as the exact quadrant and coordinate the ‘intrusion’ had occurred.

Pro-XE initiated a deeper inquiry for details, should there be any: Could the cause be identified, was it organic, or inorganic, volume and size, number detected, rate of motion and direction. At the same time, he also sent a training remote ( deterrent protocol ) paired with a modified remote for reconnaissance, one equipped with scanners and photoreceptors ( data acquisition ). He had made the modification himself as a small upgrade, in order to improve overall security.

The two remotes rose from their housing and gently whirred, before floating diligently to the designated area. Once there, they would conduct a thorough scan of the location and engage according to the situation they encountered. Usually they would have to ‘prod’ some wild animal to vacate the premises; which was always preferable to the alternative. Pro-XE awaited their report as he continued on with the Master's wishes.

    Listening

The Master sought their feelings, and Li ensured he was open and honest; that his emotions were an open datacron to Master Kran.

There was the strangest eddy, and Li could not put his finger on it, but he vouched it involved the newcomers, though inviting visitors to a discussion was not out of character for the Master.

Li's mind drifted to Arek, and he hoped he was doing alright.

A week; they had a week yet.

He drew his focus back to the others, not probing his fellows, not Kira, Elysa, Varik or Silo, but merely attuning himself to them, as he knew them and their feel in the Force better than not.

Li kept his physical eyes on those who had joined the lesson, and he allowed his curiosity to wander, settling on the droid. It was quite immobile, usually a tell for a droid that it was engaged in another process rather than paying attention to what was in-front of its photoreceptors.

    Curious.

Master Kran gave this last response by Janis one of his rare thin lipped smiles.

"Impressive boy." He said with a calm voice. He called him boy and everybody in the academy knew he was probably not gonna accept him. He called all apprentices by their name. Always.

"The Jedi Council never asked me for advise though." He said and turned back to his students.

"There is no right or easy answer to this question. Even the Jedi Council held session for hours and many opinions were voiced. I imagined their arguments were not so different from yours. So I want you all to think about your answers and tomorrow tell me if you changed your mind." He waved his hand. "It is a very hot day, you can spend the rest of it meditating. Seek guidance of the force on this." He extended his hands and both training sabers floated into them as if called by their true Master. "No more sparring of course. For your violation you well no participate in the next three sparring lessons, Kira and Varik." He knew who had started this from the beginning obviously. Varik accepted the punishment with a nod.

Master Kran turned his back on his students and walked toward his two guests. "You can spend some time with the other students, Janis. As you know so little about Jedi maybe you can learn a little from them." With these words he looked at Sy and nodded. "Let us walk." He nodded to ProXe to join them. ProXe got feedback from the probe droids. There was nothing extraordinary. No lifeform whatsoever. Maybe it was an animal which got scared away by an alarm. Maybe it was something needing the attention of the Apprentices at least.

"How did our apprentice do?" The Master asked the droid as they got away from the Jedi.

When they were far enough from the others to not be heard by them he finally asked the question hanging in the air between the him and Sy.

"I once cast you out of this academy. What brings you back to my enclave son?" Again he did not use his name. Always a bad sign.

It was Li, Varik and Arek now who felt ... disturbance was not the right word ... a subtle tremble in the force at the souther perimeter. Varik stepped to his two siblings. "You felt that? Felt as if someone used the force. Maybe Trrff. Shall we have a look? Maybe the mushroom needs help." He looked at Karim with his traditional Harluun Kal short sword. "Come along, whitey?" He asked him.

Kira was shocked by the Master admitting this was not a hypothetical lesson. This Jedi had existed, the Council had made the same decision they had been asked to make. The Master suggested them meditating, but Kira had another plan. The vision of Silo had been about the two new arrivals and also she could feel they were both strong in the force, she felt something about the boy ... she stood up and walked over to him, ignoring all the apprentices who had disagreed with her. Approaching the handsome young man she gave him a friendly smile.

"I am Kira. Shall I show you around? Nothing fancy, but I guess you apply to make this your home? Maybe would be good to know what you get yourself into."

Elysa sighed and watched Kira approaching the new apprentice. The lesson was confusing. She gave Li an acknowledging nod for his point he had made and turned over to Arek.

"Congrats on taking the trials. Nobody deserves it more than you." She whispered and padded his shoulder before walking over to Tanee.

"Are you alright?" She asked the girl and knelt before her. "Maybe we should meditate together." The poor girl had been blinded in an incident probably not so much unlike what Kira had done today. It was probably good she had not been here.

"This might be an interesting day of probe the force for answers. Silo felt something. A dark presence."

Leaving the Caves for the Jedi Academy

"Perhaps I will walk with you, but where are you headed?" he would cautiously ask. "I must also ask, what are you?"

Weirdo. He simply shrugged fluidly as his limbs and fingers all switched positions so that he was facing or 'headed' in the opposite direction. "I am Trrff of what your kind call Agarian. I am headed to the Jedi Academy where I am likely late for lessons. Again." he added with a sigh as he began the short trek through the woods to get back to where he was supposed to be instead of being here in the present moment with a strange human male.

    The Garden

Kira was quite a beauty, actually they all were. Maybe force sensitive people were more attractive by nature?

„Yes, certainly. I would love to see a little of the academy before I sign up . . . Or whatever it is I am supposed do.“

Watching after Sy, the Master and the droid he saw the blue haired guy wishing for privacy. „Guess you are not welcome here anyway.“ Janis smiled, so they were human after all. Not all super disciplined and good-at-heart, but they had tensions too. „Tell me what was your Master so angry about? Did you do something wrong? Sorry if that is inappropriate, but I try to get a feeling about what is going on around here.“

    Akeem'nun'Bestat
    The Garden

Akeem sighed as the lesson came to an end. It was clear that the others were new to being able to think through issues that adults had to all the time. He couldn't relate. Years had passed since he was able to peacefully sleep without fear of being woken up by drill masters or getting surrounded by his peers for impromptu, unsanctioned "sparring" sessions. Since he'd arrived, he still couldn't believe that the training had been so light and that the Jedi were generally very lax with their standards, comparative to what he had experienced. But it made sense: unlike the royal family, there was no constant threat to the Jedi's everyday existence.

He followed Varik's gaze from his weapon and instinctively rested his hand on its hilt.

"I don't know who "whitey" is, but I'll come along."

When Li asked for time alone with Arek, Akeem nodded. "You could just stay here, Li-oyo. You seem to be distracted."

    "
Li-oyo is fine," he said, somewhat stiffly. "If you want to rush off, go for it," Li added, frowning. "Akeem, was it?"

    Pro-XE
    Jedi Enclave

Though the alarm did not initially turn out anything that would register as threatening, Pro-XE required confirmation. He directed the two drones to the task, as he followed after Master Kran. If nothing else, the droid was thorough.

The recorded session in the garden was filed away into the Academy’s private records under an encrypted file only the Master could access for later review. By being assigned to the Enclave’s security detail, Pro-XE also understood how information could be weaponized, which was something he needed to safeguard against.

“How did our apprentice do?” The stoic Jedi Master inquired after they had walked away out of earshot from the other students.

Pro-XE extended a hand, palm facing up, and projected a holo display to help him illustrate his speaking points.

[“I am pleased to report that apprentice Akeem’nun’Bestat placed higher than originally estimated on his test. He is currently rated as ‘Proficient’ with a Training Lightsaber; at this point I recommend both Shii-Cho and Makashi as initial Forms. It must be noted that his previous martial training and combat intuition complement his learning. When facing the Ren challenge, he remained in control and quickly adapted his approach in order to secure victory.”]

The images of Akeem finished playing before winking-out at the end of the report, which was immediately archived. A redundant internal security check of the Enclave revealed nothing worth mentioning, and so his presentation was concluded.

[“That is all at the moment, Master. Is there anything else you require?”]

All the while, in a most innocuous manner, Pro-XE had monitored Sy as well. This was also part of his duties.

Akeem crossed his arms. "Indeed. Akeem, Brother-Retainer to the true king, Prince Careem."

"I've learned in my years of service that if you can't focus on the task in front of you with your whole being, then its best you stay behind, Li-oyo."

"Let us go then." Varik said and nodded to Akeem. "Whatever we felt there might not hang around forever until some wanna-be Jedi have decided who comes." Varik made his way quickly towards the disturbance, which lead them straight to the metal perimeter which was visibly damaged. Varik stopped and looked around. "Guess we two are most likely to be kicked. I am just so long overdue for my trials ... I am not stupid. He won't send me." Varik sighed. "You actually want an upgrade in force abilities, but truly you listen to the teachings of other Masters. Kran won't let that fly for long, pal." Varik made his way through the thick of vegetation to the pillars which were connected by large cables. Those usually were connecting the pillars but one was hanging loose. "Hm. You need a rancor to rip one of those out." He said thoughtfully.

    The nearby forest

Trrff was talking to the human newcomer, when he smelled something else. He did not feel anything, but there was the smell of metal in the air. It had passed through this area and no longer was there. It had headed to the academy.
