Star Trek always calls space the final frontier as most of space in that franchise is unexplored. However, in Star Wars, space travel is cheap, commonplace and mostly known (aside from the Unknown Regions). What then would be the next paradigm, the final frontier where no man has gone before; in Star Wars?

Extragalactic travel? That was the premise of Outbound Flight. Supposedly there's a lot of gravitic disturbances that make travel outside the galaxy nearly impossible, but it seems Force-sensitive pilots can gradually feel their way around them...and in particular the Yuuzhan Vong seem to have a much easier time navigating around them as well.

    Dunno about canon.

The satellite galaxies? As far as I'm aware they weren't well detailed even in Legends. As it stands right now in canon they are a total mystery.

Yeah, space is the Final Frontier because it is infinite. There is always more space to explore - and the Republic hasn't fully explored its galaxy yet, much less nearby galaxies, the local galaxy cluster, and the megastructure made out of galaxy clusters so on and etc.

    The universe is terrifyingly big.

Course, there is some inter-dimensional stuff as mentioned here, and of course there is always time travel.

It's actually rather surprising how little interest the new/canon characters have exhibited toward things outside the galaxy.

Alpha-Red mentioned the Outbound Flight Project and sudden interest/fear following the Yuzzhan Vong wars. A few other retcons/expansion stories were added later to things like the Selentium, mostly related to the YV galaxy. The characters trapped in that one star system throughout Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void seemed to refer to the rest of "outside" the system as "everything" (by the end they knew there were societies elsewhere but didn't know they were confined to a single galaxy).

The new canon characters honestly don't seem interested, at least not yet. Even the Thrawn books, which perhaps came closest, focus on the Chiss vs unknown entities within the Unknown Regions. The Chiss grapple with the concept of uncharted space, but don't acknowledge what's beyond the GFFA exactly. Similarly, the space nagivators in the High Republic stories refer to uncharted space quite a lot, but not exactly space outside the galaxy (as if that's just not possible). Although I've only read the first few High Republic novels, so I might be missing something important in that era (?).

I assume some author or, more likely, TV show will deal with this eventually. It's an obvious elephant in the room.

In fairness there were various RPG stories about Scouts exploring the Unknown Regions and it was mentioned the Jedi Order had an entire exploration corps pre–Jedi Purge, but it remains a portion of the lore that is underexplored. I do hope we see more exploration in the High Republic Era it would be a good way to set everything apart from the later eras focus on stuff blowing up.

    Thx for these great links!

Scifi so far did go to other dimensions, other galaxies, timetravel even, and while not on the main menu of SW it has been in its obscure and remote sources already for a long time. Infinity, in space and in time certainly is appealing, but ultimately folds back on itself. Far future or distant past kinda look like the same if you believe pre-astronautic esoterics, which are interesting and in part did inspire Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars and other Scifi, even finding its way into Star Trek, Stargate and others!

What SW though is lacking or rather did not fully explore yet is Macro and Microcosm. Sharu shrinking tech inside their pyramids had potential f.e. and the way MCUs Antman explores microverse and so far nobody yet attempted to even do the same for the macroverse, it'd be interesting. Remember all the memes that compare the universe superstructures to comparable bodyparts? nebulae looking like eyes? the stringlike web of superclusters looking like nerve cells and connections of a brain? the microcosm of atoms and molecules and below supatomic worlds of quarks and strings looking like space and quantum world in macro and micro scale?

Some pulp scifi barely touched this, so a proper exploration beyond our wildest dreams would be interesting, spiritual, and scientific.

Lucas microbiotic world perhaps with entire entities and living beings smaller than a humans cell? As well as macrocosm and the galaxy, planets being alive, truly "Celestial" bodies we all are a symbiotic part of?

    THAT is the final frontier!

Always thought there would be an Outbount Flight 2, done in cooperation with the Yuuzhan Vong. Maybe a trip back to their home galaxy to see if its recovered? Hopefully wont take as long to get there with GFFA hyperdrive tech

NJO 2.0 with the Silentium lead by Vuffi Ra and the Vong working together against Abominor victorious in the Vong galaxy? Cue Transformers vibes as Cybertron leaves for the Milky Way...

And Zonama Sekot and other awakening Celestial planetary bodies help Outbound Flight 2 to move entire worlds to other galaxies? Kickstarting BSG as a celestial gffa colony?

I thought the Vong kicked out the Silentium and Abominor long before they left themselves.

But yeah a second outbound flight that explored the Unknown Regions before leaving the galaxy altogether would be an interesting premise for a story.

Satellite Galaxies. Otherspace. Eventually manned missions to venture into the Netherrealm of the Force (think "Necronauts" from the ending of Superman Red sun)

The inbetween. Abilities like that of the Lothwolves in Rebels who seemingly can vanish and appear at will and organically travel hyperspace from on point of the planet to another. Deep connections between certain species and their planets, perhaps beyond even the force that binds the universe together. Abilities, that perhaps, anyone can learn to use unlike with the force.
