At this rate, the two of them were going to kill each other.

This wasn't necessarily a problem for him, as fond as he was for Helinith, and as fond as he would become of Bernael.

With a shrug, he reached out to the void Between, regarding the two Master's watching the fray.

He did not immediately intervene, but he'd seen enough, in his position as the Emperor, as the Divine Lord of the Sith, as the Son Ascendant -

To rule on the fate of these two candidates for the Lordship.

He eyed the concepts of Serapis and Aryan Graul.

    Each had many, many forms.

Serapis was both Ithorian and human and male and female.

Aryan was both himself, Sistros and Skelm.

    He contemplated.

    Are you both satisfied?

They had been spectators to date.

If they were, he would end the Trial.

    The two would be Lords.

If not, then he would let it carry on.

But for now - he did not intervene.

Serapis stood at his standing-desk watching the monitors and taking notes. His apprentice had used her skills well. Impressive. She had given, many times, as good as she had gotten. It's certain her skills here had been more from her prior training, as Ithorians are not known as the most lithe creatures in the galaxy.

A smirk came across his face. He wondered how this mind-duel will sit with the tree-creature Renn, and his relationship with Helinith. They would, after all, take this experience with them when they leave.

He sent out a communique to Aryan, sending it via the holonet since he didn't know if the consciousness that received it would be Force-sensitive or not. "They've both done well," he started. "I wouldn't mind them continuing a bit, but I agree that they'd both end up dead. They're fairly equally balanced. What are your thoughts?" He hit send.

Meanwhile he backed up a bit just to re-experience things. Throwing his voice. Quite a neat trick. And then he winced, again, as Helinith sliced him up with her blades. That's gonna leave a mark...

Helinith and Berneal surprise bonus combo!

Even while Serapis and Insipid awaited Aryan's thoughts on the matter, the battle continued below, with blind, virulent fury.

The lightning flashed towards Helinith's midriff, noxious fingers reaching out to shred, grip and burn. Helinith was aware of it, in as much as she could sense it approaching in the force but she didn't trust herself to dodge and possibly expose herself to a follow-up attack from Berneal, who she realised would thoroughly exploit any slip in her defences. It hit with the pressure of one-thousand suns. She could barely keep herself focused as the pain tore through her, screaming through her abdomen, melting her clothes to her skin and setting her cloak on fire. Only utter loathing of the creature causing her such agony kept her arms in front of her and her dagger raised.

As knives flashed, hands twisted as grips began to slip. The daggers began to twist with the hands holding them, tips rising, the tines of the guards grating against each other. The distance between them meant the lightning ricocheted as much as it flowed into her, the remains of his cloak burning away from him. It lit his tightly pressed lips under the jagged remains of his mask, the creases and slices in his armour, the scent of burning flesh rising from them both.

”They can finally rest when I end you.” he growled as he forced his dagger upward. The line of his lips slowly turned upward as he glanced down, seeing the tip of his dagger close to her throat. Of course, that also meant her hand was moving up as well, but there was nothing he could do about it. Closing his eyes for a moment, the pain searing him, he saw them in his mind. His eyes opened again, decisiveness in them, if it took allowing her to take him for him to end her then that he could accept.

Helinith watched the blade approach her throat and grinned. Her own blade was so close, if she could just drive it up a little further, a little faster, before he got there… Her competitive edge was driving her on, uncaring about anything else and she smirked as she acted on a particularly nasty thought and released her own burst of force lightning up her blade as the knives met their mark. “Perish before the herald of your god.” she spat.

At almost the same moment that Berneal felt the tip of his dagger press against the underside of her jaw, hers begin to steeple the skin just behind his chin. ”Die!” he ground out and then thrust upward, with all the strength he had left. To his satisfaction, he felt the dagger drive deeply. Short lived satisfaction as his senses began to fail, her dagger slicing up and toward, from this angle, his own unprotected mind.

There was an explosion of lightning energy and the bodies of the assassins flew apart, tumbling over and over. As the blades struck home and the power surged through them Bernael suddenly felt himself flying backward, felt as the ground slammed against his back. Blood fell in a heavy, short-lived shower that pattered across the nearby foliage. He realized they’d blown each other away with the lightning that had been released by them both. He could vaguely sense, rather than see, Helinith some way away, choking and gurgling, life force flickering like a candle in a draught. He tried to raise himself up but his arms wouldn’t respond and he closed his eyes as Darkness closed around him, trying to get his healing factor to rejuvenate him.

    Bogan

The dark specter trudged across the ruins of the forgotten planet, the prevalent winds tugging relentlessly at the folds of his Black-Coat as he lowered his head to observe the deadly contest in the trench below him. It was an impressive display of fortitude and strength, a fierce duel designed to test the abilities and commitment of those aspiring to become Sith. The one named Bernael, who Skelm had taken on as his apprentice—and perhaps signified something more in another place and time—had pleased him with his performance so far. The Anzati had certainly demonstrated his worth by enduring against the young woman...

But before he could offer his accolades, they reached a stalemate; both combatants depleted their power in a radiant blast that incapacitated them. Skelm frowned at this, his thin lips and the tip of his bearded chin the only features visible beneath his hooded cowl. However, he did not extend any reprimands.

Instead, he canted his head to regard the concept of Darth Insipid as the man conveyed his thoughts through the Force:

    Are you both satisfied?

The frown deepened into a scowl. No, Skelm did not consider this an acceptable outcome; they did not complete the fight, and there was no clear victor. For one of them to ascend, the other must definitively fall. There can be no weakness, no mercy.

Skelm strode forward with purpose, but before he could reach the center of the conflict, the chirping of his comlink brought him to an abrupt halt. "They've both done well," an analytical voice sounded over the small device. He recognized Serapis instantly, and it came as no surprise that the man had taken great pride in his role as arbiter. "I wouldn't mind them continuing a bit, but I agree that they'd both end up dead. They're fairly equally balanced. What are your thoughts?"

Unfortunately, Skelm did not have the patience to discuss this in a formal committee. He already had his strategy on how to proceed. And so, he responded to his fellow Sith by tossing the comlink to the ground and smashing it under his boot.

He then continued across the desolate landscape until he came to the fight’s epicenter. As he stood before Bernael’s prostrate form, he flicked his wrist to recall one of the Anzati’s blades with the Force. The sharpened point impaled the ground near the man’s face, missing his flesh by mere inches.

"We are not done here," he rumbled in a deep baritone, his eyes flashing yellow from the shadows of his cloak. "Finish her...and rise the victor."

Skelm’s comments caused Insipid’s eyebrows to raise. He occasionally forgot that the High Lord was at his centre one of the most malicious men he’d ever met - or would meet.

Serapis was more measured, agreeing that the waste was wasteful but Insipid knew had only a moment before one of the two apprentices went for it -

A second or two - even three, maybe four passed, more than enough time for them to act - and he snapped his fingers and their memories were restored to their correct ways.

    Was he quick enough?

    Bogan, Memories Returned

The body of Bernael lay on the ground, still smoking, as the dagger embedded itself in the rock by his head. There was such a small spark of life in the form that it didn’t even flinch at the movement. But then, at the words, the eyes opened. They were black no longer but somewhere between black and silver, fading to silver as they looked up. One hand rose slowly, slid up the torso, took hold of the hilt of Helinith’s dagger, and pulled it free in a slow movement.

Sheathing that one, the eyes rose to look into the flaring yellow ones of Skelm as the other hand reached up, yanking the dagger from the rock and sheathed it as well. His arms reached down supporting him as he sat up. Shifting his legs slowly under himself, the wound on his chin began to close. Pushing up off of the rock he nodded deeply to his Master, ”Master, the reason for the battle is no more, Helinith’s life would be a waste if I took it.”

His head tilted to the side for a moment as he looked at the High Lord, ”Something in you resonates in my soul, something I was not aware of before. But that matters little in this moment.” As he spoke his voice started in a low, gravelly tone and smoothed out as time passed.

Looking beyond his Master, he took in the form of Insipid, ’Emperor Insipid’ he reminded himself, recalling the powerful but jailed man Aden Kya that he’d first met him as. Stepping to the side a pace he bowed deeper, a small smile visible on his face under the broken mask. As he straightened he realized that Helinith still lay there. He turned back to his Master, ”Killing her in this state would not prove me her better, Master. She put everything into her fight, her attack, but missed the most vital spots.”

The smile returned then faded to his neutral expression as he turned back toward the Emperor, ”Besides, the Order is woefully short on assassins as it is and one that can duel an Anzati to this point, even a hungry one, is a worthwhile addition. If she survives the blade in her skull, that is.”

Keeping his senses alert, there was no guarantee that his response wouldn’t provoke action, he stood, awaiting the judgement of the High Lord Graul, Helinith's Master, and the Emperor.

    Helinith
    Bogan, wtf

Helinith became vaguely aware of being alive. Or at least, aware of not being quite dead.
She knew she was alive because it was a troublesome sensation, rather than the pleasant nothingness one expects from eternal sleep.

The first thing she became aware of was a wetness stuck in her throat, threatening to choke her. She tried to cough to clear it and immediately regretted all one of her life choices since one second before. Pain erupted everywhere and there was something in the way... an arm came up, a hand felt vaguely around a hard object that seemed to be stuck underneath her neck and wouldn't move.

    Well, that wasn't gonna fly.

Her fingers explored the object and found convenient purchase on a convenient handle. Convenient!
Almost like it was supposed to be there.

She summoned the force to aid her, gripped and yanked the thing out with a guttural yell and threw it behind her.
With a flash of anger she reached out and grabbed Berneal's ankle. Her touch was like a feather.

"Berneal!!" She croaked. "Why the hell did you shove a flithy big dagger in-"
Her memories, which had been slow to get started at first, caught up with her, as she began to recall the full details of what had just transpired.
"Oh yeah." Blood pooled around the working arm and hand that was now holding her jaw in place. "That was fun."

She looked thoughtful for a moment, like she was trying to remember something but it was lost on her.
"Last one to loose consciousness is a rotten egg. Nobody touch my X1."
She slumped backwards into oblivion in a contest she wasn't going to loose.

    Impressed

The Dark Lord of the Sith landed softly.

The two of them had impressed.

He raised a hand to the metaphysical impressions of Serapis and Skelm.

"I think I have seen enough. Attend to your apprentices, nay, the new Lords."

He turned, eying the other aspects of the Circle of Lords.

Syren, who had newly taken an apprentice, and Manticore, who had been salivating upon doing an ascension to the ranks.

He regarded Darth Haretisch, ever present, even in the shadows, and Darth Bellorum, his own old apprentice.

    They had been waiting.

Insipid felt tardy, but matters were what they were.

With a snap of his finger, the heavens opened above Bogan, and the stars were visible once more.

"Riiiiise," Insipid intoned, eyes blazing yellow.

Without further ado, I would present to the Circle of Lords and the Greater Sith two new Sith.

    They are no longer apprentices.

I expect the appropriate members of the Circle to celebrate and set up the revelry.

I understand High Lord Manticore has plans, and of course High Lord Skelm and Lord Serapis will also.

Congratulations to the apprentices, and congratulations to their Masters.

    His observation post

That was impressive. Serapis paced around his observation post examining the footage again and again. Brutal would be another word for it. The answer to the question of "who wants it more?" was, indeed, "yes!"

He noted his apprentice's last words, "Nobody touch my X1." and smirked. He thought, "as if this was all real." Then he thought again, "Or, was it?" No matter. Her X1 was safely tucked away already.

Insipid came over the com system in his post. "I think I have seen enough. Attend to your apprentices, nay, the new Lords."

Serapis nodded. He gathered his supplies and flipped a switch. His observation post dissolve and he appeared on the battlefield. His heavy hoof squished. There was blood everywhere. Who's it was was anyone's guess. Well, it would be interesting to have bloodstain detail on the bottom of his robe.

He walked over to his apprentice, lying strangely posed on the ground, her body... leaking. As he approached, her wounds healed as if by magic. He used the Force to raise her up. A simple bed appeared under her. Her bones were knitted, her neck wound was closed, her blood restored. She was whole again. Well, physically. Mentally, Serapis wondered.

Next to the bed, he set up her new robe. Black, of course. But in keeping with his knowledge of Helinith's love of all things sparkly, the robe was garish with glitter and sequins of gold. It stood on a mannequin next to her bed.

Serapis stood back. His job done, he was satisfied. This apprentice would surpass him, that much was certain. With that thought, he exited the field to go to the celebration to come.

The dark specter considered his apprentice for several moments, his cloak flapping crudely in the wind. The Anzati was too engaged trying to explain why he had refused to end the young woman's life, an act that would've surely resulted in dire consequences under normal circumstances. He would not tolerate failure. However, these were not normal circumstances, and Skelm recognized the greater purpose. In fact, he might have even been impressed by Bernael's response.

Canting his head, a hint of a smile appeared beneath the shadow of his cowl. "As you were, Bernael," he rasped quietly, purposely emphasizing his former apprentice's true name. There was no longer a need to address him as a student; he had earned this. "You have passed the test."

Skelm nodded his head in approval and gestured toward Insipid. He expected the Anzati to heed the Emperor's call and to take his place at his side to complete his ascension. Overall, his own work here was done.

Acknowledging this, Skelm stepped back to regard Bernael a final time before disappearing into the mists. He had much to prepare in advance of the formal ceremony and the festivities that would ultimately follow. There would be food and drink aplenty, however, he had something else in mind—something that would truly celebrate all that Bernael had accomplished. It would be a great feast, and the Anzati would feed to his heart's content.

Of course, he may have plans for a few additional surprises.

An impish smirk touched his lips; he had much work to do.
