    Here and There

There wasn’t time to think. There wasn’t time for rational analytical thought, for logical process, or systematic illumination of prospects and options. Callista was an HRD, beyond that she was at her core an AI, she could perform more thought processes in a single millisecond than a human could perform in an hour, some in a day. And for all that speed, for all that thinking power, she was out of time. She’d fallen back on something intangible, something organic in nature.

    Fear and desperation.

In an act of desperation, out of fear for her life, the children’s, Toben’s and the others, she moved. She overrode Myrah’s controls of the ship, she’d apologize later. The ship jinked, the nose shot up aiming out into the darkness of space. The second warships bolt hit, draining the last bit of shield power this ship would have any time soon, and she was vaguely aware of Toben yelling for them to jump.

    Jump where?

    Jump home.

She uploaded a set of hyperspace coordinates into the navigational computer, she had them memorized, Eshan, her adopted home. Vincent’s home. She didn’t know if they were pointing anywhere in the right direction along the galactic plane, if the hyperdrive could handle the jump. She didn’t have time to check the navigational computer; she only had time to act. All she knew was the Navigational computer accepted the coordinates and the hyperdrive gave a green light.

She activated the jump sequence, felt the whine of the engines, the protest of the power systems, green lights, warning lights, power fluctuation notifications as the ship for a moment protested giving any more effort after the beating it’d taken and finally gave in. If the sensors had been eyes she could have seen the stars turn to streaks and then meld into the vortex of hyperspace, and she hoped, home.

    Terryn Kae
    Nesron Battlefield

“We met before. Once. On Bakura.”

And it all came flooding back. The storm of emotions, the powerful army, the seemingly endless warring. Terryn knew that was indeed the place he had seen the young man. He even seemed to sport his own battle scars. Asking might have been much personal.

“Padawan Vencin Dermun.” He flourished once, and Terryn nodded his head in return. Yes, the name was familiar indeed. The boy had pulled the alarm on Bakura. Terryn knew every piece of that battle, from its beginning to the end. While it all seemed to blur together in his mind at times, he retained that detail from the boy’s name.

“A padawan still?” Terryn asked, scoping the boy up and down. A padawan on a battlefield such as this showed the boy’s resilience. To make a stand and to survive. . .yes, this boy was a rather unique one. “You seem to hold almost as many battle scars as me.” And while Terryn knew it was a lie, the boy had faced some tragedy and triumph. “And where is your master?”

Yes, that was the question. The needling in the Force that had almost required he ask. It was something almost dwelling beneath the boy’s soul. Something painful.

    Myrah
    Space

Her hands move deftly over the controls. She had let something take control of her that she hadn’t in many long years. Powers that almost itched to be used once more. And opening herself to this feeling once again was painful as well. Raw, emotional. Deaths, so many of them, all behind them as the ship lifted off. She gnawed on her lip, her heart skipping a beat every time another light flickered and dimmed. Innocence. . .preserving it, that was what she fought for. And because of her fight, many of them were dead.

And she forced her way through the opposing ships and firepower, she noticed something else. Another power, seemed to take hold of the ship. Myrah noticed it, almost a mechanical one. The woman from before, she was using the ship, helping Myrah.

And Myrah realized that, going along with it.

Lights were everywhere. She weaved here and there, with the assistance of Callista. And the general was screaming his comm at her, shouting different things. Myrah just continued to gnaw her lip. She needed to jump, but where? Where would they actually be safe, and have protection for a moment?

And then control was wrenched from her control. They were jumping. . .without her doing anything.

Her heart skipped a beat as the stars flashed.

    Republic Command Center, Nesron

The headquarters of the 115th Army was quiet compared to the tattered perimeter lines he had just picked his way through. The hum of the shields erected to protect the command staff and equipment drowned out most background noise within them, emphasizing the ever-growing holographic casualty lists in the center of the makeshift structure. Longstar lowered his black hood as he came up alongside Lora Skywalker as the two passed through the entrance. “By the skin of our teeth,” he said to her with slight exasperation.

A moment later they came upon the commander of the planetside force they had dropped in to relieve, Zabrak Master Lediath. Arek could sense his sorrow as the lists made clear just how many had been lost. “Master Skywalker, Jedi Longstar, not a second too early you made it here. Without you, that would have been much worse.”

He was referring to the infantry force Longstar had led in the relief effort, and Skywalker’s devastating melee storm. “Indeed Master Lediath, Atlas Group was all we could spare from the fleet, however I feel the Sith withdrawal was a tactical one. I did encountered their commander, Vibre, in the field.” He averted his eyes for a moment, not willing to say that he had allowed the Sith Lord to flee. “He is still at large.”

Arek reached out his armored left hand and pressed a few keys on the holo display panel. A plan of the Republic defenses on the planet shimmered into focus; they were stretched thin to say the least. “We won’t be able to hold another one. We need to get word to the fleet and evacuate the troops and Jedi we still have on the ground. Whatever the reasons for the Sith retreat, their ground force is small enough we can control the system from orbit.”

Crossing his arms he looked at the two Jedi Masters, seeking their opinion. Granted he was only yet a Knight, but he was one of the most trusted strategists in the entire Jedi Order.

Master Lediath looked at Longstar and then tot he still silent Skywalker. “Evacuation? I hoped you´d say that. But we must face the facts, we´re fighting a good fight in orbit, but the Sith fleet is as big as ours, we won´t gain space superiority anytime soon.”
Another report was brought to Lediath and his Battlegroup came in. Lediath took it from his aide and nodded to the man. “But I agree. Nesron is lost, we will not win this battle.” Lediath turned to the console controlling the hologram nearby. “And now we have less of a chance than ever. I received word from the War Council, that we will reveive reinforcement in no time sooner than ten days. This here was intercepted by our long-range reconnaissance probes.”

He pushed a button and in glowing red the holographic image of a fleet appeared. In it´s center was the black giant of a Sith Command Ship, a behemoth of a ship that reflected the megalomania of it´s creators. Surrounded was this ship by several dozens of Predator-Class Star Destroyers.
“It´s the Vengeance. The Shadow Hands command carrier and it brings with it at least two fleets. They arrive here in less than nine hours.” Lediath turned to the two Jedi and nodded. “Our fleet needs to break through so we can safely evacuate our troops before the Dark Lord´s apprentice arrives. Jedi Longstar, could you arrange and coordinate the evacuation?” Lediath said this with a seriousness and gravity only the force could allow a human being to have. But there was something else, as Lora Skywalker could sense. Fear. The young female Jedi Master had probably developed a sense for it and Master Lediath war afraid.

    Vjun and beyond . . .

    Aboard the Justice

The man looked at Erian for a long moment and blinked. His rebellious nature probably made the influence a little more unpredictable as usual, but finally the Imbued saluted. “Yessir!” He yelled and turned to the MonCal co-pilot who still seemed strangely uninterested. “Fishhead, you heard the Master Jedi. We have guests so prepare the shuttle for guests.” Then the man turned back to Erian. “Flight Lieutenant Cyla Devon at your service, Master Jedi. If you have no important Jedi business to attend to our estimated time of departure is in ten minutes. Enough time for you to get a bacta patch for the limb, I´d say.” He looked at the leg and the burned mark where Saya´s blade had cut through the robes. “And a support unit, maybe? Looks like you could need one.”

A rumbling went through the ship, but nobody actually got nervous anymore. War had taught the soldiers what was an exterior and harmless detonation and what was a real hit.

    Aboard the Freighter

There was beep, milliseconds before the jumped. A target-system had locked in on them. Whatever it was, it only hit empty space where the freighter had been, as the ship entered hyperspace just in time.

Eshan´s coordinates blinked violently on the screen, as the ship made it´s way through hyperspace and half a dozen warnings appeared on screen. Anomalies, navigational incorrect data and obstacles like supernovas and the like made it very unlikely they would get anywhere near the planned destination, but they got away from Vjun and that meant away from the Jedi Inquisition and it´s unlimited resources.

“By the force, that was . . . “ Toben leaned back and laughed out, then he looked at the children. “looks like they are all terribly frightened and yet quite alright.” He leaned into the passenger area and made an unmotivated attempt to lighten up the mood. “Kids, we´re save. Our new friends saved you all.” Then he stepped back shacking his head. Kids sometimes had to cry, he knew that.

“Thank you.” He then said to Callista and smiled. And there it was, the face of a man who had lost most of his men. The face was always the same, no matter how low or high in command soldiers were. They regretted it or they did not care. Toben was part of the first group. You could even see the realization of the other children´s fate on his face as he realized they had lost two thirds of the kids.

“Where do we get them?” He finally asked and looked at Myrah and Callista.

The Inquisitor had foreseen the move, as unforeseeable it should have been. The force was strong in him, but there was a reason why the Inquisition was considered to be an elite even among the Jedi. He dived below the blade and rolled over the ground, coming to his feet immediately again and turning ready to defend himself against the young Jedi´s probable attack. It still had to be seen who was the better duelist of both men, but it became obvious Urijah would not defeat this man quickly. Too well trained, to experienced was the Inquisitor. And the blonde man played for time . . . because time was on his side. On the edges of the market people already began to be pushed aside, as a platoon of Imbued arrived, all wearing the black and golden armor of the Inquisition.

“Innocents.” The Inquisitor spitted out his words. “You have no idea what is at stake here. But don´t throw away your life. You are obviously misguided. Give us Cilarn and the order will forgive you your mistakes.”

Okay, maybe we need a library thread?

Anyway, I thought for general orientation a map would be useful. So here is the galaxy in 622 ABY.

    Red is the Sith/Hutt/Tion Empire.

Blue is the Third Republic/Jedi Protectorate

Yellow is Bothan Dominion which has non-attack agreements with both warparties.

Skyblue is the Muunlist Alliance, a Third Republic ally, who has yet to actively join the war but supports the Jedi´s effort through ressources and the like . . .

The golden X means that in the location is a hot-zone where intesne fighting takes place.

Ten minutes. A lot could happen in ten minutes. Patience, he silently berated himself. No one knows of what you are doing and Lila is likely writing up her report at this moment. She would be the only obstacle in his path until the High Inquisitor arrived. He had hoped for her but events in the hanger suggested that she was far too ingrained in the philosophy and procedures of the Inquisition to listen to reason and the Force.

He sensed the arrogance in the young man and decided to play on a comment said before by him.

"Tython is friendly territory despite what happened there, Lieutenant," he replied. "A support unit will not be needed by those touched with the Force. Get the shuttle ready, we depart as soon as it is." He would get that bacta patch and a change of clothes. A shower could wait. "Dismissed."

    Vencin Dermun
    Nesron, Republic Lines

    “A padawan still?”

Ven couldn't help but blink incredulously at that. Still? He wasn't sure if Kae meant to say it that way, but Ven got the impression that the other Jedi thought he should've become a Knight because of Bakura. As if being rewarded for it. The thought made Ven's stomach turn and he tried not to show any of that discomfort to the older Jedi. Even if he did, Kae might just think of it as disappointment or some other such thing about not being granted the rank of Knight. As much as it was any Jedi's dream to become a full-fledged Knight, Ven certainly didn't feel like he would've deserved it.

If anything, his recent battle with Lorka told him that he still had a lot to learn. Granted, Lorka was a powerful Sith Lord but the Padawan believed that with more time and training, he could've been more effective rather then the gnat that the Sith had easily brushed aside.

Kae's examination and comment made Ven look down at himself to see his "scars". If he meant the physical ones, the Padawan had very little. His robes were torn and had collected soot and blood. One hand was missing a glove while the other had one but it was similarly torn. His armored vest was dented but in one piece. His hair and face was probably similarly dirty and unkempt but otherwise unharmed. All in all he was quite beaten up but, otherwise, he was in one piece.

"No more then anyone else," Ven spoke neutrally when he finished his self-examination.

    “And where is your master?”

Here, Ven couldn't stop himself. His jaw clenched and his eyes trailed off to the side, away from Kae. It was that bit about Bakura that he was particularly conflicted with...well, other then his decision to bring in the Republic of course. He wasn't so much angry or sad about what happened. Just...really, he was just conflicted about what he should feel.

"Dead," Ven finally replied after a moment, his eyes still averted. "Killed on Bakura. They haven't reassigned me to any Master yet; they just immediately shipped me off to Nesron after my debrief at the Temple."

Thinking of Bakura was something he wanted to do so, changing the subject, Ven forced himself to look up at Kae and ask, "I guess they reassigned you here too. Is that it then? The Sith have retreated so does that mean Nesron is ours?"

Urijah brought his saber down just as the Jedi jumped out of the way and nearly fell over from the force he put behind the unsuccessful killing move. He regained his balance as fast as he could to turn to see the Inquisitor on his feet with his lightsaber already up. Urijah began to realize he had no chance of this duel coming to a quick end in his favor. “Innocents.” The Inquisitor spitted out his words. “You have no idea what is at stake here. But don´t throw away your life. You are obviously misguided. Give us Cilarn and the order will forgive you your mistakes.”

Urijah stood there in surprise breathing heavily already. The long time away had hampered his stamina and some of his blade work. He could last against this man, but barely with his declining strength. To make matters worse Urijah's hopes of somehow beating this man were crushed as he felt the imbued's odd presence slowly make their way towards them. There was only one safe way out of this, he had to be reasonable. He looked at the Inquisitor and back to the imbued making their way towards him. "First," Urijah said to the blonde Jedi motioning at him with his lightsaber, "You explain to me why you killed three selonians." Urijah finished those words with a massive inhale trying to catch his breath in case it came to blows again with the Inquisitor and his imbued friends. He kept his arms up in a 90 degree angle, pointing one lightsaber at the Inquisitor and one pointed at the approaching imbued

Arjen stood confused. The Jedi? He hadn't seen people terrorized at the thought of their child becoming a Jedi on any other planet. Of course he was never in charge of recruiting and the only times he saw it were on Ryloth which he assumed was more so because anywhere was better than Ryloth rather than they wanted to be Jedi.

"Looks like your brothers are coming" Avon said. Arjen shot him a look that wasn't the friendliest. He was attempting to contemplate his next move. Would the Jedi realize his presence on this rock or would they simply not care about it. Or would their even be Jedi on the ground? It is completely plausible that they would leave the taking of Jedi children to the grunts. Well, one thing is for sure, these weren't the people he was looking for.

Arjen stood momentarily in silence but then let his saber return to its hilt. He raised his hood over his head and made his way to the market place to hear the words of the "protectors of peace" that was being emitted from the droid.

    Lora Skywalker
    Nesron Command Post

Lora folded her arms and answered the Jedi Master´s friendliness with a wordless nod. More Sith were coming, someone important who had his own command ship and the Sith retreating just when they were about to win. She could make an educated guess who was on that black giant ship. Arek and Lediath agreed to give up, to retreat, to accept defeat. But Lora Skywalker was undefeated and she not come here to loose that reputation. Yet, she said nothing, but listened to both mens argument in silence. The force had yet to show her a way to win this battle.

"Do you know a young Jedi, was in the western part of the first line. Human, sharp features, hangs out with a Devaronian." She finally asked and turned her head. The voice was almost a whisper. She asked to unsettle and irritate Leidiath, to estimate the will and strength of her opponent. But also, because she needed answers. The boy was key to something, key to the battle? The war? Why had the force demanded him being saved? Or had the dark side misguided her?

"Or do you care so little for a single Jedi, now that you killed a few hundred under your command with your stubborn and inflexible strategies, Master Lediath?" She added the question and send the Zabrak a crooked smile.

“Our fleet needs to break through so we can safely evacuate our troops before the Dark Lord´s apprentice arrives. Jedi Longstar, could you arrange and coordinate the evacuation?”

Longstar didn’t reply to Lediath, but silently nodded and took a few moments to work with and observe the holographic battle maps in the center of the room, to ascertain the situation. He had come to Nesron aboard a squadron of Republic capital ships in the midst of the battle, two of which had to be sacrificed in order to make Atlas’s landing even possible at all. And by the look of the combat reports, the Sith fleet in space wasn’t showing any signs of breaking. In addition, there was the impending arrival of a monstrous enemy warship and its own fleet to worry about.

He was doing his best to quickly analyze all of the variables. If they stayed there, the Sith were going to destroy the Republic forces and take the system. They would then use that momentum to drive deeper and deeper into Republic territory, and the Jedi might never be able to regroup and stop them again. If they somehow were able to retreat totally as Lediath had requested, the massive Sith fleet would likely give immediate chase. They would be wiped out the next system down the hyperlane, and the first scenario would become an eventuality yet again.

His eyes narrowed. So it’s going to be like that, huh? Arek had one idea left.

Behind him Lora Skywalker began talking quietly to the Zabrak Jedi Master. He was only half listening, but he could make out a strange thing for the human Jedi to say, "…you killed a few hundred under your command with your stubborn and inflexible strategies…"

Hearing only silence from the seemingly-disturbed Lediath, Arek turned around to face the two again. “Breaking through the Sith fleet perimeter isn’t going to be possible unless we order a full retreat from the system. And we can’t do that either.” He paused and took a deep breath, making eye contact with Lediath before continuing, “I propose we board the Vengeance command carrier when it arrives and capture the Shadow Hand.“

Longstar then looked to Lora, hoping she would support his plan. “It’s really the only thing we can do. If we hold here, we’ll be crushed. It’s the perfect time to attack.”

    IC: Mufassa Odi
    Nesron, Temple Meeting

As hir Master spoke, revealing a victory even in defeat as the enemy was turned, Mufassa wondered, if briefly, of hir fates. Quickly such notions were brushed aside, s/he was eternal and had been made such by their Master s/he walked with even now in many parts. Revelations and possibilities were meaningless beyond that they happened, no matter what they would survive, and they would continue. Just like this war. For as long as s/he lived, so now as long as hir Master willed it. . .so would the war.

The fact of bloodlines ending here, where in a way s/he was being born with hir first full battle line emersion, seemed fitting. S/he was born, and so they ended. Perhaps the full Jedi, the one with pity in her eyes was one such line. S/he could not tell, and hir Master did not say. It may prove so later, but for now it mattered like the sands beneath hirs paws, in only that it might be there.

The reminder then came, snapping hir reveries, several heads stiffening as a small part was chagrined at the moment and was drawn back to the present with the rest of hir attention. All hir heads bowed as one to the Master, acknowleding the mandate of how such an enemy was to be hunted. Already s/he knew the approach from all sides would not work as it had on the full Jedi that had died by hir actions. Skywalker would require a subtler, slower and more deliberate approach. Unlike a creature to be taken down, she would would have to be paced and worried by the pack, letting death come by hir teeth as a drawn out conclusion. A few mounts feeling their riders stir salivated in appreciation, their saliva dripping to the sands and raising small puffs of acrid hunger. Bringing once more the promise of feast to forefront of all minds.

Still they had arrived, and with a seen gesture by many eyes, s/he spread out. The meeting was a small one, only four besides the multitude of hir Master and hirselves. The packs spread around the room, edging over the rubble and letting the mounts take the leaps and dragging pulls that came so naturally to move their bodies into positions around the room. Yet all gave direct lines between the four that were not hirs Master. If they decided to fight each other, s/he would merely feast, but if they turned on Master? No matter the lack of fear shown them here, hir would be the pleasure to exact the foolishness to ignore hir.

Master and Red Twi'lek that took center stage to the three, yet they sparred in words and one of hirs forms yawned near the entrance. Although s/he was focused the fatigue of battle still had born an effect on the mounts that the force could not quench. A power and a weakness that was hir burden to bear. Then the question of challenge was uttered by the red, and the red looked at some bodies of hirselves. It was a simple thing as those the red looked at growled and crouched in a small step forward, and those opposite let their mouths drop open in readiness to spray the sith down with a full step forward. A diversionary tactic at best. It would only be the opening salvo as bodies would prepare. But yet six did not react, merely straightening where they sat now fully at attention their eyes fixed straight ahead, six equally spaced around the whole chamber. Six pairs of eyes that all of hirselves could see the whole of the room through, and all of those in it. Betrayal was a way of life to the sith, and even a beast less then hirself knew to be wary of it.

OOC: Deadline has passed and I'm back! Sorry for the delay!

    IC: Thom Stett
Office of the Prime Minister, Coronet City, Corellia

The woman, Zara, smiled at him. It was almost as if she was playing a game and Thom was the pawn, but going by his limited knowledge of the Sith, this was actually all quite natural for them. Whether that would work out to his advantage was anyone's guess in the end.

"Prime Minister, even if I knew, I would not be allowed to reveal the Sith´s sources of information. I am certain you understand," she said evenly, keeping that thinly veiled smile on her lips. "What I can reveal to you is why the Jedi are after you."

Thom narrowed his eyes for a moment and tipped his head to the side as he processed that information. He should've known as much. Still, he was willing to hear her tale, even though he was fairly confident of the outcome. Apparently his deal with Tane was quick to make the rounds...or his office had been less secure than he thought. If they tapped his office before, what was preventing them from listening in now?

He frowned as Zara continued, taking his silence as a cue to reveal more information.

"Operation Morning Star aims to take direct control of all Republic worlds. And they will begin with . . . getting rid of those leaders who have a chance to successfully oppose such a move."

Operation Morning Star? He couldn't say it sounded familiar, but nothing surprised him with the Jedi these days. It was ironic that it seemed as if the Jedi and Sith were beginning to switch roles in the midst of this conflict. It wasn't at all what he had been expecting her to say and in the back of his mind, he still believed that this all tied back to his deal with Tane.

"You will find out a rather large assembly of Inquisitors have already entered the system and are operating on this very planet to find the other person they believe could stop the coup. A Jedi called Cilarn."

Again, he couldn't say that that particular name stuck out in his mind. This whole thing was a real mystery to him and he couldn't stand to be left in the dark on such a matter. He wanted answers and soon.

"Well, that certainly puts a spin on things," he sighed as he straightened his jacket, making one last sweep of his office. "I think you have a lot of explaining to do...but not here." He held up a hand warily. "It's not safe here any longer. We need to move."

“Dead. Killed on Bakura. They haven’t reassigned me to any Master yet; they just immediately shipped me off to Nesron after my debrief at the Temple.” Ven noted it almost like a historian, and yet Terryn could sense the underhand pain. When he had mentioned battle scars, Terryn noticed the boy had neglected to think about the mental ones. “I guess they reassigned you here too. Is that it then? The Sith have retreated so does that mean Nesron is ours?”

Terryn frowned. “If only it could be that easy. I have a feeling that this could only be the beginning.” He nodded his head as he stared out at where the Sith had disappeared.

“It’s odd, though, that the Council has neglected to find you a Master. And to place you here, in one of the toughest battlefields.” Terryn frowned, refraining from saying exactly what was on his mind. “I’d say just try to get as much rest as you can.” He smiled then, glancing at the other boy as well. “I would suggest doing a few practice rounds with him, but it looks like you both held up find today. Maybe later, if we find the time, I might be able to teach you a few tips I’ve learned.”

He shook his head, almost hearing the boy’s next few thoughts in his head. “Nothing powerful, or dangerous. Just some tricks of the trade.”

    Lora Skywalker
    The Jedi Command post

"Well, wouldn´t we need to break through the defensive fleet to achieve that, Arek?" Lora asked, raising a brow. The Jedi Master had not yet answered her insults. But she would not leave him too much room to do so. "And I doubt we´ll find him there anyway. Or do you think those Sith retreated, because he wants to watch them attack again? I assume as soon as he enters the system they will wipe out our fleet and he will make planetfall. To lead the assault personally and kill as many of us with his own hands as he can. After all do they not say he is undefeated in personal combat? I assume a creature like him is hungry for this confrontation." That was why the sith retreated, obviously. To leave some Jedi alive for the Shadow Hand.

    Vencin Dermun
    Nesron Battlefield, Republic Lines

Having another look around the battlefield, only to be told that this was only the beginning, wasn't exactly much of a morale booster. Unfortunately, even Ven had to recognize that, deep in his heart, he knew that all couldn't be well. The Sith had been about to overrun them and then...they retreated. Why? Ven asked himself the same question again and knew that the answer had not changed. There must be something else going on whether on Nesron or elsewhere that would require the Sith to find a retreat of the battle to be worthwhile. Perhaps something that could turn the tables on the Republic. The thought gave Ven had a bad chill.

“It’s odd, though, that the Council has neglected to find you a Master. And to place you here, in one of the toughest battlefields.”

It did sound kind of odd, Ven had to admit. There were plenty of Imbued but a natural-born Force-sensitive was valuable to both the Sith and the Jedi. If you had one, you usually made sure to train them to their full maturity and sending the Padawans off in one of the toughest of battlefields could be considered as a waste. Again though, maybe that was just because the Republic had really wanted to pull off a victory at Nesron if it meant turning the war in their favor. If it meant an end to the war then Ven could understand that so he stopped putting anymore thought into it.

True to Kae's predictions, Ven did feel a little sense of apprehension at the suggestion of being taught "tips". Being one of the most vicious Jedi of the Order, Ven could only wonder what kind of tips he would be willing to give to young Padawans. Still, Ven did feel better at Kae's explanation that it wasn't anything powerful or dangerous.

"Maybe next time," Ven agreed with a slight nod of his head. Right now though, he was tired and his shoulders slackened just a bit as it became more difficult to maintain his straight-back composure for so long. It had been a long battle and there may in fact be more to come. And there was one tip of the trade that he learned pretty quickly: if there's a chance of rest, take it immediately. "Right now I could use some rest."

    Republic Command Center, Nesron

"Well, wouldn´t we need to break through the defensive fleet to achieve that, Arek?" Skywalker asked him. I assume a creature like him is hungry for this confrontation."

It was then that Longstar became aware of it, that sickening feeling. Out of the corner of his eye he could see the persistent Republic intelligence plotting hologram of the approximate location of the Shadow Hand’s incoming fleet. Seeing the estimated size of the fleet, coupled with the “distance to” milliparsec counter as it steadily ran down, gave him a certain feeling of unease. He had sworn he had felt something similar before just as the Sith on-world had begun their withdrawal, but it had subsided until now. And it was here to stay. If anything could explain Lediath’s unease, it was in some way connected to this.

He turned to the female Master, “We can break through the Sith fleet, but only when the Shadow Hand’s ship arrives. Presumably they’ll come out of hyperspace behind the Sith fleet already here. We’re fighting the Sith to a standstill in orbit right now. That means if we force our ships through one spot along their battle formation when the time comes, we can get to the Vengeance before they can deploy their new fleet.”

Arek finished his plan by hitting his fist into his palm. “Of course, the losses on our side will be…great,” he looked at her squarely, “but we should be able to get a strike team on board. The system is lost either way, but with this plan we at least might have a bargaining chip if we can take the Hand alive.”

It was indeed a suicidal plan, but stranger things had worked in the past. Perhaps if the Jedi Protectorate had massive reinforcements incoming also, the possibilities would be different. But the tactical and strategic holograms told little of hope.

The Inquisitor kept on circling the younger Jedi, his blue blade always between them. Cool, confident he allowed a smile to play around his lips. “No I won´t. You have no authority here, Youngling. You see reason and then you may be told what you deserve to know . . . or you die as a traitor. It is that simple.” He lay his head aside. Behind him in the crowd the old sith watched the scene and smiled sardonically.

Master Lediath gave Skywalker a long look, but then he turned his attention to Arek´s plan. He listened and finally shook his head. “Your plan got a flaw, Jedi Arek. Once you have the Shadow Hand, and I doubt we can even take him alive, but if we do . . . how could we escape? We won´t have any fleet left to cover our escape and he will thousands of disciples and Imbued with him to block our way. No, what you suggest will not work. We might get in, but we would never get out . . . except . . .” He stopped and looked at Skywalker, as if he felt he played into her hands. “Except we do not capture him and do not need to escape. Our best chance is to weaken the Sith, by assassinating their leader. I am afraid to say so, but it might be our only chance.”

    Escaping Vjun I, Hyperspace

Callista and Myrah both could hardly ignore the lights blinking and alarms ringing out and then silencing again. The course had been altered by the emergency system when the original one brought them to close to a super-nova. And yet another set of alarms did ring out. This time it were loud ones and then the ship trembled once more and was brutally dragged out of hyperspace. “This is Maridun.” Toben gasped out as he saw what lay before them.

A space battle and it was a big one. Hundreds of ships seemed to be involved and explosions ripped through the darkness of space. Yet, nobody reacted to the new arrivals, who had jumped straight into one of the interdictions fields of one of the cruisers of the Third Republic. “They seem to be busy. You think you can bring us behind them? If we get that between us and the Inquisition . . . “ Toben raised his brows. It was a perfect place to get lost or get shot, he knew both all too well.

The other problem was that if the Republic was fighting here, they would have most exits from the battlefield mined and protected, to avoid Sith force entering Republic space. From here there was only one way to jump forth.

Into the Gordian reach and with that . . . right into the war. And closer and closer to the planet Nesron, where the Seer had asked Callista to deliver the package. If anybody still believed in coincidence, their faith was probably tested by this simple chain of facts.

And from the cargo area they could hear the children´s voices . . . speaking.

Janus stepped next to Ven and sighed. “We really need to get some rest and I . . . I need bacta. Hope we still got any. Or I won´t be any use when the Sith return.” With a nod he turned to the Jedi arriving from the field slowly one by one. “Ven, something is wrong about this. We had lost the battle, had we?” And then suddenly there was a hand on Ven´s shoulder. “Verncin Dermun? Would you please follow me?” The man was wearing white-grey and golden robes and identified himself as part of the Jedi Inquisition with that. There had been no inquisitor here in all those months, so this man had probably arrived via the Atlas Group.

Terryn Kae saw the Jedi of the Atlas group gathering around one of the fires discussing. He had obviously missed something while talking to Ven. “What do you say, Terryn? Is The One or is Skywalker the Chosen One?” The question came from Lorata, a young female Jedi who had showed incredible potential in lightsaber combat and questioning the old authorities of the Order lately. She was a firm believer in Skywalker, no matter what rumors and stories existed about the godlike abilities of The One.

“Listen and obey.” The words thundered over the market, as Arjen entered the place. Those who had not begun to take their children away were gathered here, looking in shock at the larger-than-life projection of the veiled and robed embodiment of High Inquisitor Master Fel. “The Jedi have chosen your planet to be screened for potential recruits to our ranks and you shall be proud that it will probably be your children one day serving the galaxy as peacekeepers and protectors. In 9 hours after you have received this probe a group of experts will arrive to test every one of your children of the age of one to 23 on signs of force-sensitivity. Those with a major talent will be blessed to be trained as Jedi, those with lesser potential shall still serve our Protectorate no less proud as soldiers and will therefore earn the chance to one day gain the blessing of becoming Imbued. Only those who show no potential at all will be left to life the honest live of your colony. But don´t despair, there will be more screenings and often the force only manifests late in life.”

“They will not have my son!” A Weequay yelled out and broke away from the settlers to run to his house. “I heard if we do not obey, they will burn our village down!” “And I heard they are consuming the children´s power to strengthen themselves!”

People were clearly afraid of the Jedi, more so than they could ever have been of any slavers.

“No I won´t. You have no authority here, Youngling. You see reason and then you may be told what you deserve to know . . . or you die as a traitor. It is that simple.”

"Well, then I cannot tell you anything at all." Urijah said as he deactivated his lightsabers and put them back on their belt clips. I will not reveal any information concerning the life of others blindly. You may kill me if you like, but you will be killing an un-armed man. Think to yourself, if the Order really wants to win over this planet will killing an unarmed member of the order help that?" Urijah looked to the crowd and noticed the imbued starting to make a perimeter around him and the inquisitor. He hoped these speeches he was making would have some sort of effect on the people watching. "And before you call me a youngling, consider what you are doing. You are nothing more than a bounty hunter that hunts down others that will not bend to the Order's will. I seem to remember the Sith being notorious for that," Urijah said as he looked to the crowd for a second time.

Urijah shifted his gaze from the crowd to the other Jedi, feeling his deep, dark aura and the imbued's strange inverted presence float around him. As the inquisitor continued to circle him Urijah's hand's began to tingle as he charged up a power dual handed lighting attack to be attempted should the inquisitor or the imbued try to make a killing move on him.

    GM APPROVED!

    Name: Veektor Shepard
    Age: 48

    Occupation: Delegate of Corellia

Appearance: Snow white curly short hair, dark eyes, no wrinkles in the face but sharp and neat facial features. 6'0 and 195 pounds. Tan skinned. Grey robes and cloak.

Special Skills: Persuasion (strong suit), experienced, wise, and very uniquely powerful in the force.

Bio: Veektor was born premature on Corellia. Even though he was smaller then babies his age, he was found to be uniquely powerful in the force. For someone so small it was quite a feat. His rich parents thought him to be sick and had no need for a sick child. They were wrong, but their fear blinded them. Out of selfishness, they cast him aside and placed him within an orphanage. The number of kids was large there. Veektor found strength in numbers. The orphanage could not pay for schools so he had to learn the way of life on his own for a time. His band of friends always followed him and took care of each other in the process. As they grew into teens, they began feeling something odd in Veektor. Something they had always felt but ignored. They felt the need to listen and be convinced by Veektor's words. Veektor did not require lackeys, he desired friends to replace the hole in his heart.

Before he left the orphanage, he discovered the truth about his parents. When he heard they had perished, he felt even more alone then before. Angry and sad he needed an idea. He joined law schools hoping to invent a law where no one would leave their child behind. The "no child alone" idea was talked about for a while and it was only talked about. After years passed, Veektor soon forgot about his parents, forgot his childish ideals, and realized his power. It was time to move up in the big world. He went to college and earned many degrees until he eventually landed a profession in politics where he could utilize his skills.

A beautiful woman named Gloria Mason took notice of his great assistance on Corellia. This woman happened to be a Jedi Knight who came to him not by accident, but she believed it was the will of the force. It was Veektor's influence in the force that brought her to him. He was already a great man, he didn't have to be a Jedi. The encounter brought on by the force caused them to fall in love. Gloria never returned to the order. She always spoke about how she and Veektor would create an order of their own on Corellia. She taught him almost everything she knew about the Jedi and the force and even helped him build a lightsaber. Together they brought peace to Corellia and branched out to the five worlds.

Eighteen years ago, they had an offspring and his power was even greater then Veektor's when he was a baby. Gloria deemed him a miracle and Veektor called him special. They named the special boy Mason Shepard. It was a perfect life, the hole in Veektor's heart had been filled. It was a good thing, but nothing lasted forever. All good things end, it was just a matter of when. The war, Gloria had not realized how bad it truly was. It was taking a toll on her mental state in the force. The war called to her and Veektor didn't understand. She made him promise to remain and take care of Mason. The galaxy was more important to lose then their perfect life. She believed the Jedi could make a difference.

Veektor never saw her again. He fell into darkness for a long time, raising baby Mason. The war had took away his life, his breath, his will, his Gloria. The hole was back with a vengeance, it felt heavier this time. He remembered the last time he felt something similar to this, he remembered his parents. Sorrow and pain greeted him everyday. He didn't know why bad things were happening to him. He just wanted to die, but he promised her he would take care of Mason. He earned his position back in politics as the delegate of Corellia. The reason for returning to politics was unknown. Mystery shrouded his motives and future.

Mystery still surrounds him eighteen years later on Corellia where he lives with an eighteen year old Mason.

    Veektor and Mason

Veektor Shephard stared into the glass. It reflected him but it seemed like more of a mocking gesture. He had a glimpse of who he was 18 years ago. Back then, his eyes were bright, his hair was dark, and his face hummed a tune of happiness. He was just a man, a husband, a father and a politician. Now… What was he now? He was still a man, he was still a father and politician, but he was a husband no longer. Ever since his beloved wife Gloria Mason marched to war. She kept saying “the call from the force” was her reason for her decision. If it were the force calling her to war, then why hadn’t it called Veektor as well? He too was uniquely powerful in the force, almost as powerful as Gloria. None of it had made any sense. Veektor had been abandoned since then. He had taken on his duty as a father and raised his child by himself. His child was old enough now to learn why his mother had left so many years ago and why she never returned. Veek wondered how he would take the news; most likely he’d be met with confusion as he was.

The sound of the faucet made him realize he had never shut it off. It was about to overflow before he turned the wheel. His eyes drifted back up to the imitating glass. He was different, his eyes were dimmer, his hair was grey with streaks of black curls, and his sharp face said something new. It said he had greeted and accompanied pain for many years. Something else was said, something Veek had obtained through the 18 years of sorrow. When he gazed into the depths of himself he saw it standing confidently, he saw ambition. He smiled at it and it smiled back.

    Boom! Boom! Boom!

“Father, you’re going to be late!”

Veek checked the time on his wrist; it was ten minutes to work time. He had to get to work. He opened the door and no one was there. He paced into the living room and looked out at the bustling Coronet city. He tied his hands behind him and squinted.

    “Bring me my cloak, Mason.”

A grey cloak was placed on his shoulders.

“Thank you, my son,” his voice was calm.

Veek spun on his heel to see his boy on this morning. Mason Shephard came to Veek’s neck which put him around 5’8, short black curly hair, and he had mother’s bright blue eyes. He was dressed in formal clothing like Veektor. The Corellian government had no idea Veektor had a family. He had kept them a secret just in case the Jedi discovered them to possess force sensitivity. They had already known about their missing Jedi Knight Gloria, but they did not know about Veektor and Mason. He did not want the Jedi to take his son away so they hid among millions to hide their presence. Veektor had to sneak his son into society as a cover. He granted Mason a job, a job as his assistant. That way, he could earn wage and Veek could teach him how to survive.

Mason raised an eyebrow. “No problem. Are you alright dad?”

There were so many answers to that question, none of them answered yes.

    “I’m fine,” he said flatly.

Veek did not move any parts of his face. He made sure it was solid so his son wouldn’t prod.

    “Let us go.”

They began to make their way out of their home. Mason would have to know about his mother sooner or later. Veek would tell him when he deemed it necessary. For now, they needed to get to work.

    Vencin Dermun
    Nesron, Jedi Camp

Vencin watched Kae head over to one of the fires that already had a group of Jedi around it, feeling a small sense of relief. There was to be of no more discussion of Bakura and Ven was happy to just get back to the job at hand and forget about it.

“We really need to get some rest and I . . . I need bacta."

"There's going to be a lot of people who need it today," Ven spoke. While happy about talking about something that wasn't Bakura, turning to the grimness of Nesron certainly didn't help much. "The more critical of the wounded will probably be sent to the fleet for better treatment but even then we may run scarce. I've used the last of my water so hopefully we'll be getting a resupply soon now that the area had been secured."

Course, Janus had to bring up the fact that, once again, the Republic should've lost this area considering how the battle had been going. Considering that Ven could only thing that something very bad was coming, he tried not to dismiss if only to calm his fellow Jedi's nerves.

"They may just not have the numbers to spare-" Ven started before a hand was suddenly placed on his shoulder.

“Verncin Dermun? Would you please follow me?”

This time Ven couldn't help but have his shoulders jerk upwards at the touch, being a hundred percent legitimately startled about the sudden arrival of someone. Usually he would be more aware of his surroundings but his exhaustion - and the talk with Kae - had gotten him to drop his guard. Still, he made sure to properly compose himself before turning around to see who was talking to him. He was glad he did because he would've been even more surprised to see none other then an inquisitor behind him.

Vencin remembered hearing that there had been no inquisitors on Nesron when he had arrived so this man must be a recent arrival - possibly with their reinforcements. Not that there was much of a surprise for that; the job of the Jedi Inquisition was not to participate directly in battles but, rather, hunt down traces of the dark side and exterminate them whether they be on Republic worlds...or within the Order itself. So obviously the reasons as to why an inquisitor would want to speak with Ven were few but all of them promising bad news.

Still, he kept whatever fears and suspicions he had to himself before slowly nodding his head. "Alright."

Calling for help, she’d almost forgotten. She tilted her head slightly as a piece of hardware in her suit activated an encrypted com burst routed through the freighters com systems. “First things first is we need to get out of any potential cross…” She stopped talking when she heard the sounds coming from the cargo hold, the voices of the children talking. “Or we need to check out what’s going on down below.”
