Can anyone point me in the direction of some good Marxist thought about the relationship between socialism, communism and automation? I remember an intellectual (Italian?) who posited that capitalism trends towards reform to blunt it's edges (social democracy), as it progresses towards late-stage it trends toward democratic socialism, and that inevitably socialism will inherent the wide-scale automation which capitalism innovated. Part of his argument was that capitalism is an inherent stage essential for innovation.
