Jedi code: Is to be a servant of the Force and let go of material wants and needs. Keepers of the peace. No marriage or intimate relationships allowed.

Not entirely true, check page one of this thread to read the Jedi Code. The last one especially has been sliced away for the Legends. ;)

Hmmn. I admit to copy and pasting this ... Keepers of the Light and only one Padawan at a time

There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force

This opens up a lot to question. Are passion and emotion considered negative by the Jedi?

Don't worry, I doubt many of us could quote it word for word at a moments notice without looking it up anyways.
    At very least I know I couldn't.:p

Many things come to mind when I read the Jedi Code. "Fear" for example is something that we could not live without. If we did not fear anything, we wouldn't live very long.
We would basically walk around thinking we were invincible and then something would make us go splat eventually. Stick ones hand into a campfire. That type of thing. It's natures insurance policy. But then perhaps the Jedi seek to transcend the desires and weakness of flesh. If passion is forbidden, what motivates someone to pass the Jedi trials?

shuffles his robes and interlaces his fingers

OK...what's the difference then between fear and mindful awareness?

    relaxes back into his chair

And what would you say distinguishes passion from sincere aspiration?

The Jedi uphold the values of peace, harmony, serenity, and sharing knowledge. You can contrast the Jedi Code to a parallel code that the Sith have. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Code_of_the_Sith

The Sith code addresses the word "passion" in its first and second lines. The word passion is not in the Jedi Code. (thanks @BookExogorth) The Jedi value peace and sustainability. If you look at the first line of the Sith Code, it proclaims that peace is a lie and there is only passion.

“There is no passion, there is serenity” is what he was talking about I think

There is an alternate version of the Jedi Code that goes like this:

    Emotion, yet peace.
    Ignorance, yet knowledge.
    Passion, yet serenity.
    Chaos, yet harmony.
    Death, yet the Force

@Jimbing, do you feel these two different takes on the code are contradictory, or can they be reconciled? If so, how?

When we feel uncertainty about something, there may be knowledge somewhere that can fill in the gap we are missing. Personally, I find that the times I have experienced fear and uncertainty in life has been because I was missing some experience, insight, or wisdom. Or perhaps I have had to look at my daily habits and routines to see what was dragging me down into a rut.

Also, as I have grown older, I have learned to respect elders more and more. They have more years of experience than me on this earth, so I must yield to their wisdom.

Hi Sarge. Thanks for the reply. I think that your version makes more sense because it acknowledges the existence of things like emotion and chaos. The version you presented seems more like a conquering of self. Pretty cool.

Raises an eyebrow at the initiate's curt and perhaps coy reply

Then by all means, please share and expand on your own.

How does one, as you say 'acknowledge the existence' of the tumultuous energies within without being guided or even duped by them?

Maybe some examples to illustrate your understanding.

Thanks for the reply Ananta, nice to meet you!
I like this version of the Jedi code from Sarge a lot...
    Emotion, yet peace.
    Ignorance, yet knowledge.
    Passion, yet serenity.
    Chaos, yet harmony.
    Death, yet the Force

What I get out of this is. "Control your animal."
Every creature of flesh must deal with the temptations and limitations of flesh.
Every person has two sides. The intellect. And the animal. The animal is built in by nature to ensure basic survival. But when survival is no longer challenging, our inner animals seek pleasure. Power over the intellect. Which is why people continue to behave in ways that are harmful to themselves. Even though their intellect knows better. (Too much drinking. Eating. Sugar. Sex, Drugs and all that fun stuff.)
The Jedi Code is the creed to surpass the needs of the animal and prove that they are spiritual "beings of light"

    Control your animal.
