Well, I was planning on updating for the American Mother's Day, but as it's different from the UK one, I kinda forgot it was last weekend till I was reminded.

I wrote it up, but I am really not happy with it. I feel it lacks something but I don't know what. I'm going to sleep on it tonight and hopefully it will be posted tomorrow.

What was I thinking? she asked herself as she smoothed invisible wrinkles from her loose dress. She had been afraid that she would balloon up once the pregnancy progressed, but due to her fitness before and during, she managed to keep her belly to what she would consider an acceptable, though still healthy, size.

She laid her hands in her head, I'm treating this like another mission, what kind of mother am I?

Exactly, she answered herself.

"Mara," Luke's voice called and her head snapped up to see him standing the doorway of her bedroom, "it's time."

"Time..." she rolled the word of her lips as she stood with only a little extra effort.

He took a few steps forward and clasped his hand in hers, giving it a gentle squeeze. She could see in his eyes that there was pain where there should be joy. "How did it go?"

"About as well as I expected," he sighed.

"This is for the best," she answered, perhaps too quickly for someone who was sure. Of course she had her doubts, but if either of them where going to come out of this situation with at least something salvageable, it would have to be done.

"Come on," he turned towards the door, "they are waiting."

"Yeah," she sighed, following him pass the threshold and down the hall to her living room where two figures stood.

The woman had her back to them, her arms crossed but one hand brought up to rub her forehead. A man a head taller than her stood next to her, rubbing her back, whispering something in her ear. As they entered, the both turned their heads to watch them approach.

"Leia, Han," Luke's voice was solid, but she felt his hand tremble a bit, "this is Mara."

"Hi," she was able to say with only a bit of squeak to her voice.

"Mara," the regal woman said evenly, before turning around fully to show her own growing form with child. "I'd like to speak to you alone."

This wasn't exactly the way it was planned, but by the look on the former Princess' face, and that of her resigned husband, a quick glance at Luke showed that they were going to have to bow to her wish. With a nod, Luke stepped away, motioning Han into the kitchen area of her apartment.

Once they were alone, there was a long silence. There was plenty that Mara could think to say, but all of it seemed pointless and useless as she gazed at the other mother-to-be. Not only was this woman one of the most powerful players in her enemy's government, but also the sister of the man whose child she carried. A child she was about to give up forever.

"Do you love him?" the brunette asked, perhaps coldly, but there was something there that Mara couldn't recognize.

After a long sigh, Mara admitted the truth, "Yes."

"How?" she whispered back.

"How could I love him?" she asked, "or how did I let this happen?"

"My brother is an easy man to love once you get to know him," Leia sighed and sank down onto the armrest of the sofa, "so I can believe you when you say you love him, but for the rest."

"I never once used my position with him against the New Republic," she said proudly, getting it out of the way, she was not going to let her motives be questioned as, for once, they were pure, however, "although I will admit it did cross my mind."

"So why didn't you?" her eyes were hard, "We are at war."

"Believe anything you like about the Empire, or even about me, but know this," she kept her voice even, "that I am a woman of honour, and I could not do that to Luke."

The other woman crossed her arms, "Oh, so you never slept with anyone to get information?"

"Yes," she replied without shame, Luke had accepted who and what she was, and he was the only one that truly mattered, "but never the other way around. And I have been faithful to Luke ever since we started

 

Now you're making me cry, gal!!!

 

The characterizations are perfect and the conversations between Leia and Mara and Luke and Mara--very moving and honest, full of strong emotion.
I'm so glad the U.S. Memorial Day is coming up soon! I do hope they do more than manage, and if and when they do, they do it together.

 

Aww, that was so sad. You characterized Mara perfectly- so sad , can't wait till next holiday!

That was a sad post. Poor Mara. Poor Luke. He's right though. They'll work it out. I have faith.

Leia and Mara's conversation was very well written. Just the right balance of Leia's protectiveness of her brother and Mara's tendencies toward practicality and planning.

But that last section is just so sad.

Luke was standing at the dressing table pulling off his layered clothing like he belonged there, like this wasn't just her room, but theirs, and the thought saddened her as she watched him from the bed.

Her eyes started to well up in tears and rubbed her expanding belly, feeling the life inside, "I wish there was another way."
"So do I," he moved over to sit next to her, running a hand through her hair. "I want nothing more than to make you my wife, we still could make this right."
"No," tears started to form, "it wouldn't work, it would be the end of both of us."
"Then we manage," he rubbed down her back, trying to be supportive, but she knew he was in pain. "We'll be okay."
She laid her head against him best she could, "No we won't."
"We will," he kissed the top of her head, "eventually."

These two are the definition of strong-willed. If they want to stay together, they will make it happen. But in the meantime you're stomping all over our poor little hearts, Red! Luke and Mara are meant to be together!

 

Great update, but so sad. I hope they find a way to stay together.

What a sad mother's day! I doubt they would go the A/P route and try to keep a marriage secret.

Where is Mara going to go? what will she do? All it will take is a simple blood test to show that this "Force sensitive baby" is actually Luke's daughter.

They are going to have to make some very tough decisions. Whatever happens, somebody's going to get hurt.

 

Well. . . Mara is still planning on disappearing. . .

and well at least Leia is begining to believe her. . .

and no, unfortuantely I didn't get the details on SWFF. . . could you resend them?

 

This is too sad! Please tell me it will have a happy ending! I really need that.

I was missing some angst in the story. Be careful what you wish for, indeed Hope Mara doesn't run into trouble with the Imps during the pregnancy, in fact, what is she going to do during the next few monts? If she stays with Luke, the chances of being found out by her 'colleagues' are pretty high

 

Just a quick note--the 'ginchy-shine' of this story might be a bit late. ginchy hasn't been in a writing mode of late. But never fear, I'll have it done before Father's Day (our next holiday).

 

I cant waot for fathters day.

 

I completely forgot about Mother's Day as well being here in the UK. My Mum was not pleased

Great chapter! Very sad, but I understand how Mara would feel that way at this stage in her life. Poor Luke though, it must be killing him as much as it is her.
