    My guess: the underlying theme in the real world is that the boy's parents are getting a divorce (the Lego dystopia) and his little sister is trying to cheer him up.

    I missed the first one in the cinema as a) I'm not really into Lego and b) I thought it would be too 'kiddy'. I'll admit to being wrong on count b. I liked the film when I caught it on Sky Movies. I didn't really care for the Lego Batman film. I might see Lego 2 in the cinema if it gets decent reviews.

    Concerning Lego Movie 2 - I know it's cliché but the first one was better. As of level of enjoyment and re-watch-ability, I'd rank them
    • Lego Batman
    • Lego Movie
    • Lego Movie 2
    Without spoilers, IMO there was too much Chris Pratt and this movie needed more from the side characters. Also, it just seemed the animators had more fun making the 1st one and this one they just crammed in more chaos and explosions and stuff into the 2nd.

    But ranking movies is a fruitless undertaking. I feel no need to compare these movies. I just think it's fun to see what they managed: their own cinematic universe, populated by licensed characters. So it's really a cinematic universe of cinematic universes.

    The new film had some problems - too much focus on the real-world situation takes away from the tension of the main story. Too much explaining your jokes ruins the jokes. And the live footage is of student film quality.
    But for the rest I thought it was a visual delight. Spellbinding, and explicitly so. In fact I've never seen a movie that's closer to hard drugs. And it accomplishes that while at the same time making you question that quality. So yeah, that's deep.

    @Diggy any thoughts?

    Not as much as a out of nowhere shocker that the first Lego movie did and releasing Lego Batman (which was great) and Lego Ninjago (which I haven't really bothered with but I don't think people dug it) may have diluted the brand so the box office for Lego 2 was surprisingly lower. But this movie is still a solid sequel with some amazing gags and some great moments, (I loved how Rex straight up explained the rules of the universe and Emmett just cries "I don't understand!!") this is my personal highlight

    I agree. Apart from the hard drugs thing. And the real-world thing.
