Paris is Burning is a 1990 documentary film about the ballroom culture in late 80s New York City. Primarily African-American, Latino, gay and transgender communities developed families where biological bonds failed. Out of this arose a few definitions: Reading – A no-holds-barred approach to insulting and judging someone. When you've had it with someone, you read her or him. Shade – A concealed double meaning, typically meant to critique. Therefore, the library is a metaphorical place where one conducts 'reads' on other users. An appropriate read is both deeply amusing, cutting, witty, but simultaneously comes from a place of respect and admiration. This is the only way a 'read' can function' without being vindictive or vicious. Please watch this video before conducting a read on another user. Therefore, this thread should be a place where you read the person above you. You can go first.
