Some teams will wait to see if Cooperstown puts a player in before retiring their number.

Perhaps the Dodgers were waiting for that...and got tired of waiting.

Or it could be different owners/front offices waffling over the years. Who knows.

To me, the 80s was the last great era of "characters" in baseball.

Fernando, Hershiser, and Lasorda were the Dodgers back then.

Only guys I wanted to see at a game when they came to town. Only baseball cards I cared about in Dodger blue.

 

@Jedimarine I’m not sure, to be honest, as the current ownership group has been in charge of the Dodgers since 2012; I wonder if it’ll come out, officially or not, as to what the impetus was to officially retire Valenzuela’s number (it hadn’t been issued since ‘90, to be fair, but Fernando long deserved the great recognition that comes when a number is officially retired).



I hope this starts a trend, because Steve Garvey ought to be next for number retirement; a case can be made for Hershiser, too.

A. Joe West umpired more games than anyone else ever. It is not unreasonable to know his name.
B. Normalize knowing the names of good umpires.

The fact that the cable broadcast networks are destined to fold should be a huge wake up call to the league.

They need to be making it easier for people to see the games. Not extorting fewer and fewer fans at every turn.

I think every weekend game of the season should be free to stream. Every single one.

Make it so that when people are searching for videos on youtube, then can see 15 games to pick from.

But that is just dreams.

Baseball is not an investment, it is a pastime. If it gets too difficult to the pass the time with baseball, people will the pass the time another way.
