Quick look at how the Derby used to be, Amazin Avenue has an article up about Met performances in past Derby's and dropped this nugget about Strawberry in the 1990 Derby:

For all the concerns about Pete Alonso's cousin (and he's been iffy), he's managed to win both his rounds without using the extra 30 seconds.

That seems to happen a lot. McGwire in 1999 and Hamilton in 2008 didn't win either but it's all anyone remembers.

I think the most impressive things about Alonso's performance were he never used the 30 seconds and hit a lot of off balance line drives that don't look impressive except they never fall.

That's what usually happens in the derby. One player appears to stand above the rest in belting out the homers, another is right on his tail; and yet there's a third that seems to come out of nowhere. A handful of people did pick Alonso from the start, so it wasn't too shocking.

 

My only disappointment was that when it looked like Vlad was going to lose in the semifinals against Pederson, I was going to make a joke about the Los Angeles team that doesn't win titles stealing joy from Toronto again.

I respect him for acknowledging that he just wasn't cut out for playing in NY. Obviously he knew, as most fans did, that Brian Cashman was pretty vehement in running him out of town. But to go from Oakland --> New York --> Cincinati speaks volumes. He knows he wouldn't be held under the limelight in Oakland and Cincinnati even a fraction as much as he was in NY.

 

darn BP pitcher. that last minute of the first 4 joc got there were a lot of balls out off the plate.

 

Baez got booed as he was introduced. As was Contreas. I thought wow they hate the Cubs.

Then I realized why

 

Well they both embraced it by how they gestured. So they're ready to spoil again

 

And the Yankees were booed because...they're the Yankees.

 

Not a fan of the piping on the hats. They should go with something classic like the 1976 pillboxes.

I've already resigned to watching the game in Mute for awhile. Frankly, I don't care to listen to Buck talk to the players in the field. Ok they've made the point, Verlander believes that the balls are juiced (it's just a coincidence that he's doing so as he's given up the most homers in baseball) while the hitters don't believe it.
