IC: Battle at Mon Calamari

Renewed strength filled John Black as he heard the Supreme Commander's voice of reason and inspiration. They'd make their last stand right here and now or everything would be lost. John smiled grimly as the words of his own commander came out across the squadron's frequency.

"You heard him," Commander Frij Dertan snapped. "Hold the line. Let them come to us and when they break at our front line we'll jump in to get them. Blast those skips from space and prepare for a bombing run on one of their gunships. We should be able to take one out in the confusion."

Vas Lorcam, Tuklali, and Maipa "Spice" Nelirn all double clicked their acknowledgement. John Black grinned, as Mat Gyver, he, and the others, followed suit. They were Masked Attacker Squadron, a Y-Wing bombing group. And, while they weren't ace pilots, they'd do their job, or die trying.

New Republic Capital, Mon Calamari, Outer Rim Territories

With Yuuzhan Vong warships and cruisers dropping in around Mon Calamari seemingly from every direction there seemed to be little chance of hope. More of the aliens were appearing at the edges of the system, inbound at great speeds to aid their comrades who were, even now, battling against the Republic force.

All six Yuuzhan Vong flotillas that had come with the first wave converged to reinforce their failing comrades, those that fell in a probing attack. Yammosks coordinated their united efforts, with coralskippers making runs on all available space targets, including Golans, capital ships and starfighters.

Each of the Republic fleet groups moved to engage one of the alien flotillas. Unfortunately, as long as the Yuuzhan Vong held superior numbers, the aliens were able to overwhelm the New Republic's forces. Republic lines held as best they could, using valued support from the Golan Platforms.

One of the two alien flotillas that were relatively free of engagement committed to an attack on Admiral Vorin Rancis' fleet group, while the other focused on that led by Vice-Admiral Oktrem Thri?skra. Aided by groups equal to their own in size and power, the Yuuzhan Vong possessed tremendous numbers against their enemy and were able to take down two Corellian Gunships from each of the groups, as well as a Golan Station.

The Republic did not go down without a fight. Two Uumufalh Gunships, one from each of the groups, were destroyed in their trading of devastating blows. To their credit, they also slowed the alien advance, which ceased to drive toward Mon Calamari as it was consumed with maintaining an assault upon the Republic's military defence force.

Golans kept the larger vessels busily absorbing fire, just as the Republic's capital ships worked to occupy those same dovin basals. Meanwhile X-Wings and A-Wings took to targeting coralskippers, opening way for torpedo runs from E-Wing and B-Wing bombing groups.

Three more Uumufalh Gunships were lost, one of which had been brought down by Masked Attacker Squadron, while the Rogues and Saviours kept coralskippers off from the Y-Wings' backs.

Then, from the midst of the Republic's formation, a monolithic vessel lunged forth. The Mon Calamari Star Defender was larger than anything the Yuuzhan Vong had come up against thus far in their battle. Not surprisingly, the sudden appearance and power of the vessel was enough to overwhelm and break many former lines of defence.

Mighty as it was, the Republic, took down a Suuv Ban D'Krid Cruiser virtually single-handed, followed shortly thereafter by three consecutive Mataloks. It seemed to be the turn of the tide for battle, with two more Suuv Ban D'Krid Cruisers lost since its entry into battle, while only a single Dreadnaught from Commodore Toklar Ortala's group had fallen.

Elsewhere on the battlefield, Rancis' fleet group brought about the fall of the first Miid Ro'ik Warship. Their victory was not without cost. A Dreadnaught from the Admiral's fleet group suffered an attack from opposite sides, before it split apart and broke under the pressure of the alien onslaught. Another Suuv Ban D'Krid Cruiser fell immediately thereafter, as if in retaliation from the New Republic, after seeing the loss of the Dreadnaught.

"Woohoo!" Tuklali yelled over his flight's frequency, upon the fall of their targeted gunship.

Commander Frij Dertan put in a quick remark, ordering an end to needless chatter, as the squadron's pilots shared winning cheers and calls of success. "This battle's far from over. We still have a few more of those things to bring down!"

He switched to an open frequency, thanking the Saviours and Rogues for their aid. "Couldn't have done it without you," Frij admitted, as he led the way toward one of the gunships engaged with the fleet commanded by Admiral Vorin Rancis.

"Load two pairs of torps for a rapid succession bombing," he ordered. Then, he took his flight in toward the target and unleashed his payload, before pulling away again to the safety of their X-Wing escort.

New Republic capital, Mon Calamari, Outer Rim Territories

The line of New Republic warships around Mon Calamari was battered, yet it held firm. In certain sections Golan platforms had been crippled or destroyed, but the protective wall of warships held their ground. The four fleet groups had all suffered losses to one degree or another, yet the forces fought in their common effort to spare the watery world below the fate of so many other worlds that had fallen to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.

Cheering erupted on the bridge of the Defiance as the crews watched the Star Defender Republic tear into the Yuuzhan Vong formations. The mighty turbolaser turrets on the massive Calamarian warship tore into no less than six Vong capital ships, defeating them all in succession.

?Order the Republic to engage one of the groups assaulting Admiral Rancis?s fleet. We need to maintain the line at all costs? said Admiral Arboga. The Supreme Commander studied the battlefield schematics in front of him, watching as hundreds of capital ships and thousands of starfighters danced in a deadly minuet.

?Sir? shouted a comm officer. ?Admiral Thri?skra reports that he has engaged two groups. He requests assistance.?

The Mon Calamarian admiral nodded. ?We will need to send him fighter support. I don? think I can spare any capital ships at the moment. Let?s get some of our elite squadrons over their to launch torp runs on the Vong warships.?

The admiral did not need to think long about which squadrons to send. ?Order the Rogue, Savior, Masked Attack Squadron, and Diamond Wing over at once. Tell them to try and knock out some of the small to mid sized Vong warships. That should allow Thri?skra to concentrate on their big ships.?

Arboga focused on the group of Vong warships arrayed against his own fleet. ?Have the Emancipator initiate an alpha strike from its main batteries on one of those two big cruisers facing us. Also, order Commander Reed to bring the Silent Water up and engage the cruisers port side.?

The Silent Water was one of the most veteran crewed MC-80 cruisers in the fleet. It was through the efforts of its captain that the New Republic renewed their alliance with the Jedi Order.

Battles were not won and lost by firepower, or even by varying technological superiorities. They were won and lost by the peoples that fought them, through skill and ability, through drive and passion. Sheer strength of will and a boost in morale at the impressive sight of the Star Defender laying waste to the enemy line spurred renewed energy within the ranks of the Republic's fighters.

Commander Frij Dertan's Masked Attacker Squadron was but one group of many responsible for bringing that fight, in a unified effort, back to the Yuuzhan Vong. They brought down one of the gunships presently engaged with Rancis' fleet, suffering minimal damage to themselves, but not without considerable risk.

With the mighty Star Defender, Republic, moving to engage the same Yuuzhan Vong flotillas harassing the admiral's fleet group, there seemed little chance for the alien aggressors. It took mere minutes to devastate the broadside of one of the Miid Ro'ik Warships, the loss of which forced several other vessels to move in confusion.

A yammosk had been aboard that vessel and two Uumufalh Gunships were lost without adequate support in those precious minutes of confusion. By that time a yammosk from a separate alien flotilla extended its will to coordinate the remnants of the group, rallying them to assault the mighty Star Defender. They stood little hope of causing any real damage to the vessel, and, with the aid of Admiral Rancis' own group, were brought to desolation.

Meanwhile, aid was sent to Admiral Thri?skra in the form of elite fighter support. Rogue, Saviour and Masked Attacker squadrons peeled away from their present assignments to join in the defence of Fleet Group Three. They were accompanied by Diamond Wing, veterans of the battle at Kegan. Together they helped bring down a total of six Mataloks and an Uumufalh Gunship, providing aid to the larger vessels they sought to support.

Thri?skra was given a greater degree of freedom and took the opportunity for what it was. Another Suuv Ban D'Krid Cruiser was snatched from the lines of the Yuuzhan Vong, taken in a brilliant display of exploding yorik coral and gouts of flame.

Elsewhere on the battlefield Arboga watched one of his Strike Cruisers crumble under a combined barrage of enemy fire. The loss was more than enough to enrage the men, women and aliens under his command. With the Emancipator initiating a precise Alpha Strike and the Silent Water offering aid from a flanking angle, two Yuuzhan Vong cruisers were brought to utter ruin.

Only five distinct alien flotillas remained. Yet even so, two of those groups broke and scattered upon the arrival of an unexpected guest. A dozen Nova-class Battle Cruisers and six Hapan Battle Dragons, all accompanied by Miy'til fighters, joined in the engagement, bringing a swift end to three Suuv Ban D'Krid Cruisers in a matter of minutes. Among them were a series of coloured New Republic fighters, ranging from Red, Blue, Green, Grey, Yellow, and White to Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Silver, Gold and Diamond, each respective of their assigned squadron names.

If nothing else, the New Republic was not without allies. Only this was the first time the entire Rainbow Swarm had been assigned to a single battle. Sent from the Hapes Consortium through a secret alliance, they promised to secure and renew old agreements with their mutual friends in this time of need.

?Admiral, we have incoming ships in vector seven!? shouted a sensor officer.

?It?s a trap!? shouted Admiral Arboga.

?No sir, they?re broadcasting friendly signatures. It?s the Hapan Navy!?

The Supreme Commander watched as a fleet of sixteen Hapan warships streamed into the Mon Calamari system, taking up position with the New Republic forces already engaged above the world. Six distinctive double saucer Battle Dragons and their escort of ten Nova-class cruisers opened fire on two Yuuzhan Vong battle groups, inflicting serious damage on them and forcing them to scatter. Flying escort for the formation for capital ships were hundreds of fighters, including multiple New Republic fighter squadrons.

Morale shot up across the New Republic fleet as the Hapan warships took up position in the line. Fresh fighter squadrons tore into coralskippers, allowing already tired New Republic squadrons to refuel and rearm. The Star Defender Republic continued its jaunt through formations of Vong capital ships, tearing them to pieces and breaking apart formations. Admiral Thri?skra and his forces managed to bring down an additional cruiser, while Admiral Rancis continued to show why he was one of the finest fleet commanders in the Republic navy. Elsewhere, Commodore Ortala led his forces from the MC-80 Leviathan, his longtime flagship. Flanked by four Strike Cruisers, the warships unleashed a furious barrage of fire at a Miid Ro?ik warship.

The elite fighter squadrons, led by Rogue Leader Colonel Daniel Brodi, continued their attacks on the Vong medium warships. Any coralskipper that strayed to close to the formation fo elite fighters was vaporized in a hail of ruby red fire.

?Hapan fleet commander, this is Admiral Arboga. I don?t know how you got here in time, but on behalf of the New Republic I thank you. My ships will open gaps in the line for you and your warships to take station.?

Flushed with reinforcements, the forces arrayed against the Vong invaders had new hope. Yet, watching the large formations of warships still arrayed against him, the admiral quietly prayed that the Force was with the New Republic.

Rancis' Fleet Group Two was hard pressed, fighting against double their strength of Vong warships. Shields were tested as Vong attacks began raining down. Still, the Republic fleet fought valiently, managing to take down a Vong warship even as returning fire tore into the Dreadnaught Paladin. The next to fall was one of the mighty Golan stations that were supplying an overwhelming amount of fire. That loss could have doomed the task force, if nout for the arrival of the Republic, which put it's mighty firepower into the heart of the two Vong attack groups. This arrival heartened the Republic ships, which mounted another offensive to clear the attacking ships off the Republic.

That's odd, Rancis thought as he watched two Vong gunships go up in flames just after Republic gutted another warship. They're normally better coordinated than that.

"Comm, order Champion to move up and take Paladin's place in the line. And send telemetry data on these two gunships to Ground Control; maybe they can make something of it."

As Fleet Group Two began to mop up the remaining Vong from the second attack, the sensor station called out, "More drops out of hyperspace, sir; I'm reading 10, 16 capital ships and numerous starfighters."

Rancis' heart sank. More reinforcements for the Vong, he thought.

"Confirmed, sir. New drops are Hapan Navy, and they're tearing into the Vong!"

A cheer went up around the bridge, and Rancis let out a relieved sigh. This changes things. We're still outnumbered, but the tide is turning.

"Recall starfighters to refuel and rearm as necessaery, but make sure our fighter screen is remains constant. Recharge shields and weapons when posssible, and get damage control teams going. We have a little reprieve, and we're going to make the most of it."

New Republic Capital, Mon Calamari, Outer Rim Territories

Sweeping into the Yuuzhan Vong formation with a desire to rid the galaxy of the invaders while aiding the New Republic, the Hapen Fleet Group, accompanied by the Universal Alliance's Rainbow Swarm, dealt swift and decisive damage to their chosen targets. They brought down a pair of Yuuzhan Vong gunships, and flew in to aid Admiral Arboga's Fleet Group.

A secure transmission came through to the bridge of Arboga's flagship, sent from the leading fighter of Diamond Squadron, from the man responsible for Rainbow Swarm's formation. "We bring reinforcement, Admiral," the voice of General Ace Caine offered. "Direct us as need be." There was a slight pause as a pair of Mataloks exploded under the combined assault of X-Wings and Miy'til fighters. "Additional reinforcements from the Universal Alliance are on their way."

Despite the arrival of the elite Alliance squadrons, and their companions from the Hapes Consortium, the battle for Mon Calamari could sway in favour of either the invaders or the Republic and its allies. Only time would tell, as laserfire and globs of plasma filled the space between and amongst engaging fleets.

The Star Defender, Republic, continued its jaunt through formations of Yuuzhan Vong capital ships, tearing them to pieces and breaking apart formations. It alone was responsible for the destruction of another pair of Suuv Ban D'Krid Cruisers. Devastatingly effective, it continued to inspire allied forces, while proving a waking nightmare to the extragalactic invaders.

Admiral Thri?skra saw the loss of his last Strike Cruiser, and one of his Frigates as his fleet group sought to defend itself against two sides. His men and women returned fire without pause, however, their efforts reinforced by the members of Rogue, Saviour and Masked Attacker squadrons. Together, those capital ships and elite fighter groups brought down four Mataloks and another Yuuzhan Vong cruiser.

A second Frigate was also lost, but the Yuuzhan Vong paid for that with the destruction of an Uumufalh Gunship. Counter attacks led by Colonel Daniel Brodi's Rogue squadron saw the demise of yet another Suuv Ban D'Krid Cruiser, the fall of which seemed to renew strength among the allied forces.

Elsewhere, Commodore Ortala led his forces from the MC-80, Leviathan, his longtime flagship. Flanked by four Strike Cruisers, the warships unleashed a furious barrage of fire at a Miid Ro?ik warship. That enemy vessel, overwhelmed by laserfire and already weakened, stood no chance under the combined barrage it suffered. The ship broke under the pressure of a combined assault from so many diverse angles, and its pieces scattered as it tore apart.

Meanwhile, not too far across the battlefield, Admiral Rancis continued to show why he was one of the finest fleet commanders in the Republic navy. He called for some of his number to refuel, after managing to bring down a pair of Mataloks.

Filled with vibrant energy and new found hope, his men and women followed his lead in their continued resistence against the shadow that was cast by the Yuuzhan Vong. Rancis saw to the destruction of a an Uumufalh Gunship that had been harassing his fighters and knew the Republic's chances of success at Mon Calamari were higher than they had been mere minutes ago.

General Ace Caine. Legendary fighter commander and hero of the New Republic. While Admiral Arboga did not know him personally, his exploits were well known. Now, leading the Rainbow Swarm of the Universal Alliance into battle, the general had helped turned the tide at least momentarily in the favor of the New Republic.

?Instruct your fighters to work with the elite New Republic squadrons and wings. If we can knock out a few more of those mid-sized Vong capital ships, their larger cruisers will have no support. Coordinate with Rogue Squadron leader Colonel Brodi, who is leading the attacks.?

Arboga paused for a moment, overcome by a sense of gratitude towards the Alliance and the Hapans. ?General, if we get through this, I think I have at least half a dozen medals to award you.?

The battle immediately around Mon Cal continued to go in the favor of the New Republic and their allies. Bolstered by the Hapan warships, the four Republic fleet groups continued to hammer away at the remaining forces of the Yuuzhan Vong first wave.

?Order the Republic to finish off that weak group that is facing Thri?skra. Instruct the Hapan ships to concentrate on the second group facing him. Together, they should be able to knock those two groups out of the battle.?

Elsewhere, Commodore Ortala swung about, forming a line consisting of the Leviathan, a MC-80b cruiser, and a VicStar Deuce. Positioning themselves towards a Miid Ro?ik warship and its escorting Suuv Ban D?krid cruisers, the line initiated the Ackbar slash. The maneuver was a risky one, exposing the lead ship in the line to much firepower, but if successful it the tactic would wreak havoc on the Vong line. Putting all power to his forward shields, the veteran Mon Calamarian commodore leapt into the fray.

Gazing at the battle still raging in front of his fleet, Arboga decided it was time to finish the force off. Arming the six forward proton torpedo launchers on his flagship, the MC-90 cruiser unleashed a powerful barrage at one of the two remaining large warships. Coordinated with an additional alpha strike from the Emancipator, the Supreme Commander intended to knock the cruiser out. A swarm of his smaller ships, backed up by a MC-80 cruiser, targeted the second warship, firing from a multitude of angles.

Switching back to the Universal Alliance frequency, the admiral said, ?I think I have a way to end this battle general. If we can coordinate with the exact time of arrival and position of the Universal Alliance fleet, we might be able to ensure Calamari?s safety once and for all.?

"Starfighters are to focus their bombing runs on the medium cruisers; have the Carracks, Strike Cruisers, and remaining Dreadnaught support them. Arm out torpedeos, and target the second warcruiser. Champion, concentrate fire on the second warship as well; keep its shields worried about your attacks.

The Bothan Attack Cruiser orientated its guns and joined its fire to that of Starfire. "Target our torpedeos away from the cannon stirkes so they're not sucked into the same voids as the lasers," Rancis ordered. "Keep up the laser fire as a distraction. "Fire torpedeos when ready."

Shortly thereafter, streaks of pink and blue leap from the bow of the mighty Calamarian cruiser, heading toward their adversary. It worked at Kegan, Rancis thought. I can only hope it works again.

The Wroonian skipper of Scalawag Wing broke comm discipline with an ecstatic yowl as the B-wings of Blunderbus Squadron expended their last torpedoes in a finishing blow against a wounded matalok cruiser, the exhausted dovin basals incapable of intercepting the two dozen warheads arrowing in from all across its starboard flank. Multiple sympathetic detonations shattered yorik coral and sprayed fluids, internal organic components, and crew across space as the B-wings scattered by wingpairs. "Nice shooting!"

"Can the chatter, Lead," Captain Say'dira cut in. "Personally I'd be delighted if your flyboys would handle that batch of skips vectoring for us."

"Noted and acknowledged, Blunderbus One. Fusillade, Broadside Squadrons assemble by flights and assume center sweep formation. Blunderbus, back us up and pour on the fire."

Scalawag Wing had experienced a banner day. The opening moments of the engagement had seen them cooperate with the Dauntless to shred a matalok and a Suuv Ban D'Krid cruiser. Twenty-four E-wings equalled 384 proton torpedoes; added to twelve B-wings the total was 672 weapons. The Blunderbuses had just expended their final salvos, finishing off the wing's fourth capital ship kill. Now armed only with lasers, they angled towards a pack of fifteen skips headed for them, possibly avenging escorts from the matalok. So far the unit was down by four E-wings; the B-wings had avoided losses due to the aggrsssive defense of their escorts.

"Split to Krakana's Claw," Kynt ordered. The E-wing squadrons leapfrogged to either side, creating two sweeping pincers connected at the base by the B-wings. The idea was for the more heavily shielded and armored assault fighters to take the brunt of the head-on assault while Fusillade and Broadside struck in towards the flanks. The two groups began engaging at 2.5 klicks, lasers going one way and magma missiles going the other. Golden projectiles slammed into the Blunderbus fighters, sapping their shields but not inflicting fatal damage. As the heavy fighters saw their forward shields knocked down to 25% they broke off, evening out their protective envelopes. Meanwhile, the outgoing laser salvo shattered six skips unable to block the bolts. Kynt had had enough experience with the Vong's dovin basal technology to know that even with the newfangled stutterfire settings on the fighters' weapons, the best counter for the intercepting votexes was mass fire from multiple angles. The seven remaining skips got sandwiched between twenty-one E-wings. The three survivors of the crossfire were gone in under a minute, separated and chased down by flights of New Republic fighters.

The command channel crackled. "Scalawag Lead, this is Dauntless. Some cover would be handy."

    "Copy that, home."

    IC as Captain Rakkrukh

Dauntless was not unscathed. Her backup shield generators had been needed earlier after several bruising gun battles; fortunately those had ended with worse damage to her opponents. One engine had been shut down after a tailshot had burned through the armored casing. However, she was still moving at 92% power, her shields were back to full, and her weapons systems were fully functional. That and morale was running high after cooperating with her fellow Group Three warships to annihilate most of one of the two flotillas opposing them and put a serious dent in the other.

The battle wasn't over, though. The four Miid Ro'ik Star Destroyer analogs, the heaviest warships in the Vong flotillas, still remained along with several other serious hitters. It was going to be a slugging match.

    Rakkrukh hated slugging matches.

    Commander Smith Bor, Savior Lead
    Above Mon Calamari

?Yeah! Get ?em again!? yelled Flight Officer Roolk Deen over the Savoir Squadron comm system. He?d just assisted in taking down another medium sized Yuuuzahn Vong ship.

Ripping his engines on their axis, he peeled away from the burning hulk with two of his wing-mates, Thyme Zen and Tank.

?Nice job, Saviors,? Smith congratulated as two flight came back into formation.

The young commander launched his own torpedoes into the fray, aimed at another Uumufalh Gunship. With the torpedoes away, Smith broke to the right. His two three wingmen broke off to form two pairs before vectoring back into formation.

The Squadron had been performing admirably. With destruction all around, the young pilots were keeping their heads and taking a few down on the Vong enemy.

Commander Brodi of Rogue Squadron was coordinating their present attacks as a fighter group.

?We?ve a got a flight of skips coming up behind us, Lead,? it was Lt. Freynahla Suw, commanding flight three in this engagement.

?Very, well. Break off and take them out. Rejoin formation when you?re done,? Smith said over the squadron comm.

From behind him the X-Wings, following Suw?s high arc went to vector on the incoming skips.

    Be careful out there.

Smith blinked the thought away. Despite anything else that he felt for those two women, Lt. Suw and Bonna Kay, the fight was most important. The victory more necessary than the life.

Bor rolled his X-Wing over. It glistened in the light of flashing energy beams and plasma balls all around him and his flight. Already his snubfighter had received some carbon scoring, either from friendly fire or attacking craft. Other than the coloring, his ship was fairly free from harm, though. A miracle to be sure.

New blips jumped up on the screen as the Hapan Navy arrived and immediately got to work smashing the invader attack force.

?We got ?em Saviors,? cried Roolk.

?We?re getting them,? Smith reminded and he dodged a shot and came to bear on the next Uumufalh Gunship. ?They still have a lot of chances to get us.?

I hope that isn?t going to be our epitaph. Oh, Force, stay with us a little longer.

New Republic Capital, Mon Calamari, Outer Rim Territories

At the order of the Supreme Commander, fighters from the Universal Alliance and Royal Hapan Fleet combined forces with some of the elite squadrons of the New Republic. Coordinating his attacks with those administered by Rogue Squadron's Colonel Brodi, Ace Caine saw the demise of two Suuv Ban D'Krid Cruisers in rapid succession.

Not too far from them, in the midst of heavy battle, the massive Star Cruiser, Republic, took down an Uumufalh Gunship with ease before focusing its attention on the Miid Ro'ik Warship beside it. Those two vessels had been attacking Thri?skra's fleet group, which lost a Corellian Gunship under the continued pressure. With no escort, the last Miid Ro'ik Warship of the Yuuzhan Vong third fleet group fell prey to multiple attack and was utterly devastated.

Following the orders of the Supreme Commander, the Hapan Battle Group took the fight to the second group that had been engaging Thri?skra's fleet, offering what aid it could. Together, the Hapan and the Republic forces were able to knock out two alien gunships and a cruiser in a mere matter of minutes.

Another Uumufalh Gunship fell prey to their united forces, with two Mataloks dropping with them. That only left the larger warships, which were now openly exposed without their valued escort.

Commander Ilar Kynt led the way in mopping up stray coralskipper groups, destroying what fighters had been harassing the Republic's fleet and support craft. Kynt had had enough experience with the Yuuzhan Vong's dovin basal technology to know attack from multiple angles, combined with the use of stutter fire techniques was the sure path to victory against the aliens.

Meanwhile, Commodore Ortala's forces swung about and initiated the Ackbar Slash. While the Republic suffered weakening in the strike, Ortala saw their effort through. They succeeded in destroying the mighty Miid Ro'ik Warship and one of its flanking cruisers, which left those alien ships that remained as easier targets for the picking.

Arboga unleashed a powerful barrage of torpedoes at one of the two remaining large warships. Coordinated with an additional alpha strike from the Emancipator, the Supreme Commander intended to knock the warship out. A swarm of his smaller ships, backed up by a MC-80 Cruiser, targeted the second warship, firing from a multitude of angles.

The first warship fell quickly, which gave freedom enough for Arboga to focus more heavily on the second, which was devastated with equal efficiency. The alien cruiser that remained stood for less than a minute as it and the four remaining Mataloks of its group were brought to desolation.

Elsewhere, the Silver Talon swung below Mon Casima, targeting the weaker of the two alien warships. Their combined effort from varied angles brought success upon the warship's breaking.

Rancis did not relent, however. His starfighters focused their bombing runs on the medium alien cruisers, supported by his own Carracks, Cruisers and Dreadnaughts. It was little wonder that two alien vessels were destroyed in rapid succession, with the third following shortly thereafter.

One of the Uumufalh Gunships broke apart in the midst of that engagement, falling to the assault launched by Smith Bor's Saviour Squadron.

The Yuuzhan Vong were reeling from the New Republic's organised assault. Yammosks were hard pressed to maintain control and order in the carnage of a losing battle. And yet the aliens were not prepared for Admiral Arboga's biggest surprise of all. His allies from the Universal Alliance were the hammer to his anvil, his unity with old allies and friends the reason for his victory.

By the time the reinforcements arrived, the Republic had all but destroyed the Yuuzhan Vong at Mon Calamari. Reinforcements from the Universal Alliance simply

New Republic capital, Mon Calamari, Outer Rim Territories

Word continued to flood in of the victory over Yuuzhan Vong forces. The commanders of the various other New Republic fleets stationed at Sullust, Corellia, Bothawui, M?haeli, and others all reported the same- victory. The New Republic and her allies were victorious.

News quickly traveled along the HoloNet, to worlds across the galaxy. Exhausted crews and damaged ships returned to heroes welcomes, as New Republic citizens across the galaxy honored their brave defenders. The losses sustained in some areas were high. It would be months until the New Republic could replenish the losses in manpower and warships. But, despite it all, the heir to the Rebel Alliance preserved.

Over Mon Calamari, Admiral Arboga gathered his ships in a close orbit over the capital, beginning the long process of repairs and the recovery of bodies. Universal Alliance and Hapan warships and squadrons augmented their tired forces, mopping up the last of the Yuuzhan Vong warships.

Down on the surface, the New Republic government reconvened in a special session of the Senate. Chief of State Jenica Belami walked up to the podium in the rooms center, waiting for the crowd to quiet as she prepared for her address. Since taking over the reigns of the government several months before, the new Chief of State had worked tirelessly to expand and strengthen the New Republic, with a special effort to help worlds that had suffered greatly due to war or poverty. This speech was going to be broadcast across the galaxy, so she quietly prayed the Force would give her the wisdom to speak with clarity and purpose.

?Citizens of the New Republic, I come to you tonight from our capital, Mon Calamari. The darkness that was falling upon us has finally lifted. We now stand in the radiant light of the dawn, warmed by its touch and thankful that we survived the night. I am standing here before you today thanks to the tireless efforts of our brave men and women in uniform. The New Republic Defense Force has once again shown us what it means to give the last full measure. Against incredible odds and facing almost certain defeat, they held the line and protected this world from the horrors of war.?

She paused for a moment, trying to steady her shaking voice.

?Yet, our own defenders were not alone. Brave and noble allies from across the galaxy came to our aid. We are once again reminded that a helping hand in a time of need is life?s blessing, one that I firmly believe was aided by the Force. But it was not these allies alone who contributed forces who aided us to victory. The Force had been with us, often literally as at Dellalt. The Jedi Order has done this government a tremendous service, one that I intend to repay in any way we can.?

Finding her center, the Chief of State finished her speech.

?The New Republic is safe again. Yet, if we have learned anything, it is that wars can not be won alone. Therefore, I commit publicly tonight to share any and all information on combating the Yuuzhan Vong with the Galactic Empire and any other peoples or governments fighting the vile depredations of the Yuuzhan Vong. It is my hope that this knowledge and tactical information will give them an edge over these invaders. Tonight, as we thank the Force that we have come through this trial, let us remain committed to the ideals of our founding. We must never forget that our goal is freedom and liberty for all the galaxy. The New Republic?s greatest strength lay in its people. Ships and armies will not restore the galaxy to freedom. It is your faith and commitment to the ideals with this day many gave their lives to defend.

Thank you, and may the Force always be with you all.?

    Commander Smith Bor
    Above Mon Calamari

By the Force, we are winning.

Erupting around his battered fighter were Yuuzahn Vong ships and those of the Republic and their allies. Victory was imminent as the enemies either withdrew or were beaten. Flying asteroids became flashes of molten carcasses of what they once were.

Hope began to rise in the heart of the young commander. What seemed insurmountable had in fact become a triumph to top all others. He was sure the Rebel pilots couldn?t have hoped this much during their final major conflict at Endor.

Smith reached down to his comm system to broadcast his next orders. The Vong would be beaten today. Savior Squadron had worked hard to be a part of this battle and Smith was going to be sure that they had further chance to show it. Before his gloved hand even touched the system, it crackled to life. Snapping and buzzing as the communication grew faint. Who was it? In the next moment it was gone and Smith felt his heart sink and his throat contract. What had happened?

?Lead, this is Four. We just lost six,? came Freynahla?s voice over the system. ?I?m sorry.?

Smith threw his head back against the back of his seat, causing his helmet to clank against the stiff surface. His cousin, Timothy ?Tiny? Tank, had died. How? It didn?t matter right now. What mattered was that this victory not be tainted.

?Very well,? Smith said, speaking louder than normal to hide pain. ?We?ll?care for that later.?

?Rahn, I?m going in,? came Roolk Dean over the squadron channel.

?Negative, eleven. Return to formation. Repeat, return to formation,? ordered his flight leader, Lt. Rahn Josie.

    Oh Force, what now?

?Flight One, form up. Eleven get back in formation,? Smith said, pitching his craft after the pilot.

Even back in training, Roolk liked to be the hero, liked to be impulsive. The four-man flight came to bear behind their comrade as he made a run at a Yuuzahn Vong medium-sized corvette. The ship shot out plasma from multiple orifices and projected their alien black holes to catch the shots coming from the unified attacks of the Mon Calamari defense teams.

Roolk snap rolled his X-Wing with the grace and skill that was known to him. He?d excelled, but it was for this reason that Bor opted against his recommendation to promote Dean. The rookie pilot fired off a volley of torpedoes, likely emptying his cache. Then, from afar, Smith could see Roolk initiate his stutter-fire laser systems and began painting the Yuuzahn Vong ship. Suddenly, a large barrage of attacks came from the combined forces around the Yuuzahn Vong ship.

The ship was forced to activate more dovin basals, one dark hole opened up dangerously close to Roolk?s evading fighter.

?Eleven, watch you?re back. Divert all power to engine!? yelled Smith into the comm. ?Roolk, do it now!?

Inside his cockpit, the smile upon Roolk?s face faded as his ship lurched. His shields were gone. The order from Smith came over his comm system, and the young pilot frantically tried to make it work. Forcing any and all reserve power into the engines escaping from he didn?t know what. The lurch happened again. From behind him, he could hear the ship moaning, the R2 unit died out. His ship was being sucked apart.

?No, no, no, no!? he said aloud and inverted his ship?s axis in an effort to break the hold.

The change only caused the suction to get a better hold.

?Well, cap,? he said as cold started to come into the cockpit. ?Guess I won?t be needing that drink after all.?

The seams of the small craft were literally being pulled right into the unnatural vortex created by the Yuuzahn and the necessity to defend itself. In a flash, the Vong?s suction halted as it exploded from the attacks outside. The pull on his craft was gone, but not so the danger. The fate that had awaited him was still there as his craft wa

"Commander Bor, if you have a moment?"

Walking up behind the young commander was Colonel Daniel Brodi. The leader of Rogue Squadron had gotten to know the young pilot during the last phase of the Vong war against the New Republic. He had been so impressed by the pilot that he had even worked on several joint squadron missions with the Saviors.

Brodi looked tired. The Rogues were one of the elite squadrons that encountered the worse of the fighting. Rumor had already spread about how the Rogues lost five pilots during the climactic battle.

"I am pleased to see you made it commander. We lost alot of good people today. And Force knows that we need young leaders like yourself. It is people like you who are the future of the New Republic."

Over. It was finally over. Wave after wave of Vong ships had been repulsed. Mon Calamari was safe. Although the kill ratios were greatly in favor of the Republic, the losses were termendous. Everyone lost friends, comrades. Admiral Rancis slumped back into his command chair on the bridge of the Starfire as the mighty ship finally stood down from battle stations. His fleet was still mostly intact; still, Rancis knew that hundreds, no thousands, of men and women under his command were dead. Rancis was slightly consoled by the victory; every man and woman knew going into this battle that the chances of survival were small. And despite the great odds, their deaths had counted for something. For each lost life, hundreds of civilians were spared. That was the point of this job.

Rancis flipped on his comm and addressed his fleet. "Today, we are victorious. Mon Calamari is saved from destruction. And yet there was a cost. Many of our friends were killed. Their deaths were not in vain; let us remember their lives, and their great sacrifice that others might live. Now is the time to celebrate our victory; I wish I could buy all of you a drink, but not even Admirals are paid that much. Still, I promise you this: while part of the fleet must remain strong and vigilant against any enemy reprisals, I will make sure that each and every member of every crew recieves enough leave to unwind, visit the surface, and drink to our victory, and those that gave their lives so that we can celebrate this victory."

The young commander craned his neck at the call from behind him. He knew the voice. In fact, it was one that he had known in these past few months. Releasing the female waist of Freynahla Suw next to him and the burly shoulder of Rahn Josie he turned around completing, allowing the same smile to continue upon his tanned-looking face.

    The Colonel looked tired, drained.

?Colonel,? he said with aloud, happiness overpowering him. He?d expected to see the Colonel at some time on some holonet news item in the future. Not to be greeted by him again.

?I?m pleased to see you made it commander,? Brodi said. ?We lost a lot of good people today. And Force knows that we need young leaders like yourself. It is people like you who are the future of the New Republic.?

A place in the Rogues. That?d be interesting to be sure.

As Colonel Brodi winked and smiled, he departed for the hangar.

    ?Sir,? Smith said quickly.

He grabbed Brodi?s hand and shook it once.

?Take care of yourself,? the commander said and then turned around himself.

Before him stood the survivors of the Final Battle. The heroic actions of all the pilots would likely be well remembered in the history books. Obviously, those that lived it would need no book to remember the untold thousands that had died.

?Well, my friends,? Smith said facing his squadron.

    *****************

The tavern was full of boisterous crews and pilots. Victory was indeed sweet. Singing in the corner could be heard, songs reminiscent of the past conflicts overcome. Songs from the days of the Old Republic, songs of the naval crews of the seafaring worlds.

Smith stood from his chair and waved his green liquid filled glass before his seated squadron. All had been laughing at the events of Dawn Moore?s first days at the Academy and Stephen?s first meeting with Thyme Zen at Bespin. The laughter died down as their commander stood, still joyful, but solemn at the same time.

His blue eyes twinkled with overflowing emotion. He raised his glass.

?To the great men and women that we will never know that died so that we would survive. May we never forget their stories. May their exploits ever be told to millennia of generations. To Roolk Dean, Flight Officer, friend and fellow pilot, a wish of peace evermore. To Timothy?? he faltered as his throat was suddenly caught up with saliva. He forced a swallow, but the lump remained.

?To Timothy, my cousin,? Smith continued as his voice cracked. ?A thousand dreams fulfilled and hero?s funeral welcome back home.?

The glasses clanked together below him at the table. Smith sat whilst Rahn Josie stood up. His short, stocky form standing at stiff attention.

?May the wind be ever at their backs, the seas an kind master, and death a sweet cup of sherry,? he said with his usual gruff voice, repeating the seaman?s creed.

Smith was happy to drink to that. He downed the last of his liquid and reveled as it burned the back of his throat. They would be remembered, he would be sure of that.

    Aftermath, Battle of Mon Calamari

Admiral Vorin Rancis was a hero. Of that, there was no doubt at all. The liberator of Kessel. The victor of Kegan. The brave fighting admiral of Mon Calamari. His exploits were amongst the best known in all the New Republic. The MC-90 Starfire orbited above Mon Calamari among hundreds of warships, ranging from small corvettes to the massive Star Defender Republic. There also was the tough old Dreadnaught Silver Talon, Rancis's first command. The Dreadnaught had participated in battles across the galaxy, including early battles at Tanaab, Eriadu, and Duros.

Admiral Arboga knew that the faith he placed in Rancis was well deserved. It was announced less than a day after the battle that Rancis had been selected to be the commander of the New Republic First Fleet. The "Fighting First" was the protector of the New Republic capital and one of the most distinguished forces in the New Republic. There were even whispers among the High Command that one day Rancis might even be Supreme Commander. The battle hardened Rapid Deployment Fleet was given over to Commodore Toklar Ortala, a old Academy-mate of Rancis's and fellow officer.

The First Fleet was estatic upon receiving the news. Several elite squadrons, including Diamond Wing and Talon Squadron, flew by the command bridge of the Starfire, waggling their wings in a sign of respect. Fleet Command decided to let Rancis keep the Starfire as his flagship, as well as attaching the Silver Talon to the fleet as well. It was the least that a greatful New Republic could do for its newest hero.

While no one, not even a Jedi, could predict the future certainly, one thing was certain. Vorin Rancis had a bright and promising future ahead of him.

Saber, playing this game with you has been a true pleasure and honor. You joined IBoP around the time I did, so you were amongst the first players I got to know. You have been the finest and most able player I had in the New Republic navy, and a great deal of our faction's successes and acchievements can be tied to you in one way or another. I do not exagerate when I say that your character Vorin Rancis was perhaps one of the most interesting and fun players to interact with. My friend, I salute you. :)

New orders were received; Admiral Rancis was to take command of the Fighting First Fleet, tasked with the defense of Mon Calamari. His flag would remain on Starfire, which suited Rancis just fine. This way, I don't have to move all my stuff again, he thought. He was also pleased to see that Silver Talon was assigned to him as well. The aging Dreadnaught, his first command, would always have a special place in Rancis' heart. The ship had been under his command, directly at first, then attached to his task force, for nearly as long as Rancis had been serving the Fleet.

This will give me a chance to visit the surface, Rancis thought. I haven't had much time to explore. The oceans and coral are as beautiful of the lines of a Mon Cal cruiser, I've heard.

Yes, there were definate advantages to this new assignment. And Rancis was going to try and enjoy all of them.

It has been an honor and priviledge to serve the NR Fleet these last few years. When I began, I never expected to come as far as I did; Commodore, maybe, with a small flotilla, not Admiral of the First Fleet. I would like to thank Nick for bringing me back into the fold after I'd been away for a few months, and for taking over and running the NR smoothly. LSA, I can't even imagine the amount of time and effort you went to in running IBoP as a whole, and it was much appreciated. If this is ever re-opened, the NR can count on having at least one Naval officer to defend its values.

Just a few posts that wrap up some loose ends. :)

    IC: Senator Suuul Nyuub

Secret base, secret planet, secret location

News of the New Republic victory over the Yuuzhan Vong at Mon Calamari reached Suul Nyuub within minutes of the annoucement, via a secure holocomm. The men and women at the secret base let out a resounding cheer. Chief of State Jenica Belami had dispatched Nyuub to establish a secret facility that would serve as a command and control base should the worst ever befall Calamari. Only a few days before, that seemed as likely as ever. Now, with the capital world secure, Nyuub could breath a sigh of relief.

The base would continue operating until the New Republic was secure. The losses sustained over the previous days fighting were high. New fleet units under construction at Haven Base, Nkllon, Sullust, and Mon Calamari were still months off from completion, but the government would see to it that their completion was now top priority.

Until the entire galaxy was safe from the vile depredation of the Yuuzhan Vong, Senator Suul Nyuub would remain at his post.

    IC: Commodore Toklar Ortala

    Aftermath, Battle of Mon Calamari

Commodore Toklar Ortala gazed out the observation window of a orbital space station high above Mon Calamari. Sitting in a large repair yard was the Leviathan, his longtime flagship. The vessel had taken a tremendous beating during the battle, sustaining heavy damage to its forward sections during a Ackbar Slash manuever. Casualties had been very high, including the loss of his friend and first officer, Captain Thane.

With the victory came new opportunities. His longtime friend Admiral Rancis had been assigned the command of the First Fleet. Fleet Command then decided to assign Ortala to command the Rapid Deployment Fleet.

Not wanting to waste time, Arboga ordered Ortala to get the RDF ready to head to Elom. If it was determined that that world was defenseless, Ortala was to move in and liberate the Elom's from the vile grasp of the Vong. Ortala had hoped to spend a few days on the surface of his homeworld, but he supposed that he would have to wait until the war with the Vong was over. While the New Republic was safe, there was still much to be done before the galaxy was safe again.

    IC: Admiral Tokmek Arboga

    Aftermath, Battle of Mon Calamari

Sitting at his desk in the Defiance's ready room, Admiral Tokmek Arboga scrolled down the casualty lists from the recent battle. The ready room was far from quiet, as work crews from the Mon Calamari shipyards began the process of repairing and resupplying the admiral's flagship. The tough MC-90 Star Cruiser had survived through the worse of the fighting, taking down a Miid Ro'ik cruiser and several support ships.

The list was long. Even the elation of victory would not dull the pain Arboga felt for the losses the brave beings who served under him. Scrolling down, he gazed at each ship, thinking of those friends and colleages who he would never have the priviledge and honor to serve with again.

    Victory-II class Star Destroyer Moonshadow
    Victory-II class Star Destroyer Enfranchise
    Dreadnaught Risen Sun
    Dreadnaught Liberty
    Strike Cruiser Comet
    Strike Cruiser Brave
    Nebulon B frigate Quenfis
    Nebulon B frigate Yaravis
    Corellian Gunship Daring
    Corellian Gunship Alzoc III
    Corellian Gunship Nova
    Corellian Gunship Courage
    Corellian Gunship Radiant
    Corellian Gunship Lightning
    Corellian Corvette Hammer

The fleet's smallest warships fared the worse. Bravely covering larger warships from fighter attack, multiple gunship crews paid the ultimate price for keeping the fleet safe. While all the Star Cruisers and most of the Star Destroyers had survived, many had sustained heavy damage, requiring weeks or months of repair. Starfighter losses had been high as well, with some squadrons suffering almost 60% casualties.

So many beings, so many families made to suffer, thought Arboga. Shaking his head, he strived to focus on more pleasant thoughts. Death was a part of military service, albeit one that people always hoped would never affect the ones they loved.

Being Supreme Commander of the New Republic Defense Force was a demanding job. Having held the position for a few years now, Arboga felt that he had finally gotten the hang of it. He had spent most of the last several years struggling to rebuild the fleets of the New Republic, helping make his government stronger as it faced the threat of Iaius's Empire. Despite all the hardship and suffering that he had experienced and seen first hand, he still considered his many years of service to the New Republic as the high point of his life.

Arboga hoped that with the war slowly coming to an end that he would be able to retire to the peaceful seatree forests of Mon Calamari.

Maybe in a few months, the admiral thought to himself. Once I get the fleet rebuilt and leave the Republic on stable ground.

There was a buzz on his comm unit. The signal was priority one, from the Office of the Chief of State.

Opening the unit, Arboga saw the face of Jenica Belami. She smiled warmly before begining the conversation.

"Admiral, you did well up there. On behalf of the New Republic, I thank you for your leadership during the battle for Mon Calamari."

The Supreme Commander smiled back. "Thank you, Madame President. Force knows that I did not do it alone. We are fortunate to have so many fine young commanders in the fleet. Rancis, Ortala, and Thri'skra deserve more credit that I. So do the Hapans and the Alliance, for that matter."

Jenica smiled inwardly. Typical Arboga, always reluctant to take any credit or praise.

"Admiral, I think it is safe to say that there is a New Republic today thanks to your efforts. The victory here at Mon Cal has been an inspiration to the entire galaxy. Beings across it are rising up to face the Yuuzhan Vong. Hopefully we all will be able to bask in the light of peace soon."

Arboga nodded. "Force willing, Madame President. Force willing. Then we all can find more peaceful ways to live out the rest of our lives."

    The Chief of State raised

When IBoP first began, I wanted nothing more than to see a whole host of factions working within a shared galaxy. We saw the New Republic (then the Rebel Alliance) and the Galactic Empire as the primary factions, but there were others, too, which were responsible for creating a multilayered backdrop from where we could all come to share an infinite range of adventures without limitation.

Since its foundation, the Balance of Power has done nothing but grow. For it to come to this conclusion without failing is perhaps our biggest and best achievement. More to the point, I must bow to the tremendous success of this particular faction.

Since its early days as the Rebel Alliance there was strong opposition against great odds. Initially this faction was comprised of very few veterans, with the group's leaders struggling to steer us all in a common direction. In the face of such strong opponents, namely the Galactic Empire and its branches, the New Republic was hard pressed to keep afloat. Our loss of leadership OOC was reflected IC with the passing of more than one Chief of State, until very recently.

You are probably only too well aware and grateful to our present Supreme Commander and Chief of State, who not only stood from the ashes in the face of aversity, but sought to rise and rebuild what we all merely hoped and dreamed of, but could never truly realise on our own. You have our sincerest praise and support as the most deserving and capable faction head, IC and OOC, that this faction has ever seen.

Fortunately the faction was not without great support. While never as powerful or experienced in influence and number as the Galactic Empire, the New Republic has seen some of the finest Role Players in IBOP history. AdmiralNick22 and Saber_Leader to name the primary leaders, with both Kalio_Dynkos and even the more recent Alion_Sangre, offering valuable aid.

Yet I'd like to recognise some of the older players, who, in some form or another remain with us. Marna_Veign, Protege-of-Thrawn, ShadowWarrior and Handmaiden_Yane among them. Many thanks to each of you.

While events and plans do not always turn out as we hope or expect, for the most part I feel the New Republic managed not only to fulfill, but to surpass its own potential and what even I had envisioned for its conclusion at this stage of the game.

As you may be aware, I will be heading a FanFiction effort at some point in the future to summarise and revisit some of the many events that have come to pass in this game, in all its forms. We will explore the past, what you have created as the present, and what we have yet to see in the future. Until such time as its birth and growth, I leave you with a final addition of my own.

Several Days after the Battle at Mon Calamari

Battered and broken ruins of the once mighty fleet littered the dark depths of space. They had served their purpose, as had the many brave soldiers that were assigned to them. While the Katana Fleet was not complete, it certainly stood strong one last time. In the midst of the debris--a floating graveyard for defeated warships--the few Dreadnaughts that remained prowled peacefully in search of survivors, technology and other salvagable items.

From the bridge of the Destroyer Karakadon, watching with red glittering eyes, the Khass battle lord smiled grimly. He offered a sideward glance to his second, a blue-skinned Chiss, one of the species that had been his own ancestry. "Thus the end of the Yuuzhan Vong along the Outer Rim," he stated. "Word from the Grand Admiral promises us victory within the Unknown Regions and also at Coruscant."

His second nodded sagely. "I would not have guessed that we could have placed such great trust in them," the Chiss admitted. "Their assistance was at tremendous risk and loss among their ranks--"

"--and it brought us a united victory," the Khass finished. "Indeed." His words hung within the air as he
