    Darth Canes

The lightsaber was inert, now, though the Tsil crystal inside still thrummed with life, and still gave him a slight edge, increasing the effective strength of the flow of the Force through him, bringing him up to the level a Sith would normally be at in terms of cheap, showy Force-tricks. Still, he would have to replace the energy cell, now, but it had been amusing to watch her nearly electrocute herself to death.

For a Sith, she should have known the dangers in touching another Force-user's lightsaber.

"My name, Reiis, is Darth Canes, and it's pronounced CAH-nays," he said, circling her from the shadows. He quickly reached for the remains of his lightsaber, and it flew to his hand, the Tsil projecting images into his mind that he pushed aside for later examination. For now, he had a Sithling to deal with. He wondered if he could use the presence of her cyborg arm to his advantage...?

Grinning, he began picking up little pebbles, whispering to them as he did so. Then he held them up in one hand, and the whole pile rose into the air. He might not have his lightsaber, but he was nothing if not resourceful. "Fly, little ones," he whispered, using the flow of the Force to turn them into ballistic objects. Silent, deadly, and using only tiny amounts of the Force in the hope that she would be less inclined to notice, he launched them as hard as he could at her cyborg arm, and in particular at anything on it that looked fragile--hoses, LCD screen, blinking lights--and they streaked towards her with lethal intent. He was already moving as soon as they left his hand, not bothering to look to see if they hit. Using the Force to augment his speed, he raced around her in the circling shadows, coming at her from the opposite direction as his flung pebbles, hoping to take her by surprise, the Tsil humming with potential energy, reflecting back and amplifying the flow of the Force through him. It wasn't much, but it was enough to give him a tiny edge. He drew closer, reaching for the energy core of her arm with a little bit of the Force at the same time...

Reiis growled as she pushed herself into a standing position. Darth Canes, eh? So...he called himself "Darth." Perhaps he had earned it once...perhaps he had given it to himself. Either way, Reiis was disgusted.

Until now, she didn't know his location, but the minute he summoned the saber to him, his location was revealed. Reiis almost let out a Force Wave over half the arena, enough to crush the walls in which Canes was hiding to rubble....and hopefully crush him, too....but she hesitated, waiting.

Her eyes were scanning for further indication when a pebble hit her on the arm, ripping some of the fabric but not injuring her. And then another. This time, it whizzed past her face. The little twerp was throwing rocks at her! With the Force, she swatted the projectiles away like fruit flies, concentrating now on the increased Force usage surrounding her on all sides.

An alert through the Force had her erecting a Force shield around her. She was sick of this -- it would end, and it would end soon.

Concentrating on all of her frustration and anger, Reiis built tension in the Force until the ground shook, then unleashed a Force Wave in all directions. It was enough, she figured, to crush the walls and hopefully Canes, into rubble and pulp, respectively.

She tried something else, too. Something she'd never tried before. Sever Force. Reaching out, she sough Canes' signature in the Force, and tried to cut his connection before he could do more harm.

His Force-thrown pebbles didn't have the impact he'd hoped, but then again, he was never that strong in the Force, though constant practice had him pushing himself to the limits. Nosebleeds, nausea, even fainting had occurred as he tried to pull more of the Force into himself, and he'd learned just how far to press it intimately. Still, they did cause superficial cuts and nicks, enough to draw blood, but not be much more than a mere annoyance.

He quickly snatched up more pebbles and launched them, a veritable barrage of them even though he knew most would just deflect harmlessly off the force shield she'd erected around herself. Still, if one or two got through and nailed her hard enough, it might break her concentration.

Still, he focused on her arm's power core...almost...he could feel it, the shape of it, the texture of its surface, the atomic pyle inside crackling...pull, damn you! he swore at himself, trying to focus every shred of his ability to pull that core, almost missing the sense of potential building sharply in her.

"Damn it," he swore, knowing what was coming next. Shield myself, or pull the core? Before he could make the decision, though, her shield not only locked into place, he could feel his own connection to the Force dim, and then all hell broke loose.

There was a huge cloud of dust that appeared right as something very solid slammed into him, knocking him back at least twenty feet. His vision dimmed and his ears rang; was he standing still? Wait...vertigo kicked in and he realized he was actually on his back. Groaning, he shook his head. She was near, he could feel her, but she was out of his field of view.

He had one chance, he knew, but he'd never quite managed the trick of what he was about to attempt, what he had to attempt. He closed his eyes and focused.

Blood began to run freely from his nose as he focused. He felt the Force bend around him physically, and for a moment, as he opened his eyes, he could see his body flicker and vanish like a cheap hologram, going completely invisible for several moments, though he knew this would not hide him within the Force. It was a moot point; the bubble flickered and vanished, leaving him exposed...

"Ah, kriff," he swore, feeling Reiis approach...

Reiis approached Canes carefully, maintaining only the block that protected her. At this point, she let the Force flow to him as much as it would. When she reached the spot where he lay flat on the ground, she leaned over the body and looked at him, thinking.

"What was your goal here, Canes?"

What was his goal here? he mused, body aching from impact. He could feel the flow of the Force return to him as she released him, and he used it to dull the pain. He grinned up at her, deciding for levity to stall her. "Oh, you know. A little combat, the destruction of the arena..." he wheezed, gesturing at the rubble around them. He focused on the Tsil, pulling as much of the Force into himself as he could tolerate.

Hmm...a loose cable here, some slack over there...

As she approached, a black power cable snaked through the dust behind her, then shot forward, attempting to wrap itself around her ankles and pull backwards as hard as possible...

Reiis snarled at his infuriating levity. The returned flow of the Force must have returned his arrogance.....definitely not needed.

And yet again, as Reiis would soon learn, lacking feel in her entire lower body was a major disadvantage. Just as she was about to take a step forward towards Canes, she found her legs would not move. "Oh, kriff--"

Her legs shot out from under her as the cord pulled back. She would have fallen on top of him had the cord not been pulling her backwards so fast. Reiis landed with a hard thud, dust flying up around her as she was dragged. But it wasn't fast enough to prevent her from reaching out for a fistful of his cloak. If he was going to pull a stunt on her like that, he'd just have to tolerate being dragged right along with her. Never again would she relinquish her severance of his Force powers, if given the chance. Concentrating as hard as she could, she tried to execute Force Sever before it was too late.

Whooping at the success of his Hail Mary, he laughed and started to push himself up, his head throbbing in agony in time with the aching in his back. He felt her again, trying to come at him through the Force, attempting to sever his connection again as she reached up and grabbed his chersilk cloak, pulling him back down. He landed on his aching hip with a thud and snarled.

Gritting his teeth, he focused, straining against her power. It was like feeling one's way along a wall while blindfolded, looking for a crack to grip. Sweat popped out on his forehead as they lay there, glaring at each other. To an outside observer, it looked like they were having a staring contest. But inside, he was a raging storm, and he could feel the limits of his power as he strained to pull more of the Force through him and the Tsil.

Blood began to freely flow from his nose again as he tried to find an opening, and for a moment, they remained locked in a stalemate. Then, his mental "fingers" found a crack, and he grinned, pushing his way through as much as he could to try to break her attempt to sever his connection. The Tsil flashed images in his mind of shattered crystal, warning him he was approaching the limits.

He would not be defeated by her. He gestured to another power cable and it shot towards her neck, and another, and then another. He flung stones at her, dust, gravel, bits of shattered plasteel from the arena's previous combatants--anything to distract her. He even tried reaching for her lightsaber--let's see how she liked it!

"Let...go!" he hissed, clenching his jaw. "You're killing both of us!"

Reiis would be damned if she let go, no matter what the cost. Still fighting against him through the Force, she tried to shut down his connection, but was meeting a surprising amount of resistance. The Tsil crystal....that was it. Reiis pushed even harder, but he somehow still managed to match her. It did indeed look like a staring match, and Reiis saw the nosebleed open up again, the blood running down his face and into her glove and his cloak.

    His cloak...

Reiis's attention was caught for an instant by the material she was gripping so hard. Chersilk was it? "You bought a cloak made of chersilk?" she asked incredulously. Scoffing even as they continued their power struggle, she continued. "What kind of fool buys a cloak of chersilk and gets into a DUEL? I always have durasteel armorweave." She winced as more debris kept flying towards them. "That's why none of this junk you're throwing at me is working," she scowled back at him.

Now he was trying to grab her lightsaber. A distraction. But Reiis wouldn't be distracted, oh no. Her free hand went to his face, clawing at it like she was trying to find a grip somewhere.

"You, you impertinent little twit, will stop."

"I wasn't expecting to get into a duel that would take this much effort!" he shot back, his voice strained by the struggle of fighting off her attempts at severing his connection to the Force. He wasn't going to give; she'd have to kill him before he gave her so much as a single centimeter. If she was willing to risk it, so was he.

"I normally don't have duels," he hissed through clenched teeth, "unless I know I am going to win!"

Allowing the tiniest amount of his concentration to divert, he redirected the cable holding her leg to begin constricting. The cables flailing at her he also motioned to grab and constrict--if he could just get one around her neck... He thrashed his head to the side as she clawed at him, then grabbed her arm with both hands and laughed. "Thanks, doll!" he said, popping open the power core cover on her cybernetic arm. Let's see how she liked having a non-functional limb in addition to being choked by power cables. He grinned. Something had to give and soon.

"Effort?! This is a frickin' duel you kriffing idiot!" she yelled at him, part in strain and part in frustration. Apparently quite hardheaded himself, Canes wouldn't let go for anything.

"Then you really are an idiot!" she shot back. It would be her last words before some of the cables he was playing with wrapped around her neck and constricted. Not finding an outlet for air, her respirator shut off automatically to save itself. With her face turning blue and her lungs screaming for air, Reiis was left with few options.

She raised a clenched fist -- the organic one -- and brought it down upon his face...with a potentially legal blast of Force Lightning in tow.

Bruised, bloodied, he almost had her, and he grinned in malevolent delight as the cables snaked around her neck and pulled taut. Her struggling became frantic as her respirator began to shut down, cutting off her air, and he knew she couldn't hold out much longer.

She pulled her arm away right as his fingers touched the humming power core of her cybernetic arm--so close--and then she brought her fist down on his face. Hard. He saw an explosion of white stars behind his eyes, and his concentration broke as he fell back away from her. He saw her hand begin to flicker with St. Elmo's fire, and he suddenly realized what she was about to do.

"No!" he shouted through bloodied lips, flinging the Tsil away moments before her Force-lightning crashed into him. His vision grew white and he could hear a strange hum over the sounds of his screaming and the arcing lightning. This was pain on an entirely different level, and if he still had his lightsaber, he'd be able to deflect it; alas, he flung the Tsil away to keep it from exploding, or causing a Force storm and killing them both.

"You--kriffing--rycrit!" he screamed in agony, his limbs twitching madly, unable to even form coherent thoughts.

With her hand free, Reiis grabbed the Darksaber and cut her neck free of the cables. They fell about the both of them as Reiis continued torturing Canes.

And she wasn't about to let up, either. Not only was she still working to cut off his Force powers, but now she was electrocuting him like crazy.

And then she stopped. Just the Lightning, not the Force Sever.

Reaching out to grab his neck, she would lean her whole weight on him to cut off his breathing. "Now," she would say, attempting a Mind Trick. "You will tell me who and what you are and what you came here to prove."

The agony, white-hot sheets of it, abruptly stopped, and the sudden lack of pain left him reeling off-balance. His limbs felt wooden and stiff, the muscles still spasming painfully. He lifted his head with great effort and was going to make his usual snarky comment, and then he felt her command settle on his mind, like cobwebs he couldn't shake off. The fight had left him weakened, and he struggled to resist.

"Now, you will tell me who and what you are, and what you came to prove."

It was warm and comforting, this command, and he could feel himself drawn to it. He fought to resist in vain. "I told you my name," he said in a monotone. "Canes. That is the name I am known by, now." His head throbbed in agony, and he could feel his mouth speaking, but it was against his will. Still, he must have had some kind of influence on what he said because some of his snark shone through. "And I think I accomplished what I set out to prove," he wheezed, chuckling to himself. He spotted the Tsil some few meters away and began crawling to it, hoping that would keep him from falling under more of her influence.

She was still keeping him from drawing upon the Force, too, and he was too weakened to fight both her and her influence. "I don't think I did too badly against a Dedicated," he laughed scornfully, then fell into paroxysms of coughing. He should have pulled the core on her respirator rather than her arm. So close to the Tsil. He reached out a hand for it, hearing her footsteps crunching in the gravel behind him as she slowly followed him. If he could just make it to the Tsil, he'd--well, he would--actually, he could--

For a moment, he had no idea what he would do once he reached it. He just knew that he had to. The Tsil was calling out to him...

    The object was small.

Made of inert metal and cylinder-shaped, it was perfect for being permanently embedded in the flesh without damaging surrounding tissue. A slave tracking device. Reiis wasn't the type to personally own slaves, but when she had happened across a tracker, it was one of those things the Force told her it was best to hang on to.

    And so it was.

Reaching into a hidden pocket in her robes, Reiis pulled out the device, letting it rest on her palm. She didn't have a tool with which to inject it into Canes, but the Force would take care of that. Aiming, she sent it flying into his leg. She didn't think there was anything to impede it....she would see.

"It would be best if you didn't move further away," she spoke. Her voice was calm, as if she were on top of things and not exhausted herself. "You've just about reached your limit here." Reiis took a step back. "Now it looks like you've run out of room. A terrible pity your saber is still so far away..." her voice trailed off. "And you don't even have the Force to help you."

She knelt now, resting and catching her breath. "What am I going to do with you now, Canes? What am I going to do...."

He heard her rifling through her pockets for something, but he didn't pay her any mind. He had to reach the Tsil. Just a little farther and--

He cried out in agony as something stabbed his leg with white hot pain. He looked down and saw a small puncture wound and glared at her. "What did you do?!" he demanded. He could feel something in his leg.

"It would be best if you didn't move further away," she said, her voice wheezing with exhaustion. "You've just about reached your limit here." Reiis took a step back. "Now it looks like you've run out of room. A terrible pity your saber is still so far away..." her voice trailed off. "And you don't even have the Force to help you."

A slave tracker! he realized! It had a microexplosive in it that would probably remove his leg, and messily, if he exceed the range limit she chose to set. The walls felt like they were closing around him rapidly, a noose around his neck. How in blazes would he get out of this?!

"What am I going to do with you now, Canes? What am I going to do...?" she chuckled in triumph.

Gritting his teeth, he swallowed his pride. "Well, it looks like we're stuck as partners, now," he growled. "You could at least give me back the Tsil."

The wind was howling at the entrance of a crumbling structure half-covered in the red sands of a place one might recognize but could not place. How anyone arrived at such a place was a mystery, one was simply just. There.

Leda would hear the subtle roar of the wind howling across dunes and the crumbling stone structures. A blackness before her, that she was bid to enter.

Striding out of it is the Headmaster of the Knights of Darkness.

"Lord Headmaster." Darth Mu bows. "It is I, Darth Mu, a fellow Sith."

Summoned... though not visible. His presence descends. A dark ache overcomes the thread, as a creaking and vibrating sound is evident.

    "You summoned me?!?!?"

The question is as much an inquiry into why one would ever think to do so, as much as it was a respectful acknowledgement that the Headmaster's door was always open. Though many knew not to venture into said doorway.

    "Sith?"

"What do you know about the darkness...."

A feeling of dread would pulsate through his veins as a web of darkness was cast instantly upon him.

The morning sun is shining brightly through the open air sides of a large hall, with long wooden tables adorning its main chamber. Large bookcases and racks as far as one can see within the massive hall, an archive of sorts. The smell of the morning mist still being burned off by the rising sun at this early hour. A single occupant is seated at one of the tables, an assortment of books, papers, scrolls, and artwork about some of her own creation and some of the libraries. A devoted student, and even teacher to many even for one still young in her age within the order of The Knights of Darkness.

Hekate was immersed in study in this early morning hour.

She would feel a presence within the library, that she had previously thought was empty aside form herself.

She could feel it, a dark presence that whispered quietly in the lurking shadows the morning sun had not yet reached. The wisdom and lore of the Sith was like that of the shadows, repulsed by the light and forced to do battle with it every day to maintain balance. Things were lost in the shadows, but things that are easily lost can always be found, if you know where to look. Hekate was drawn to these gothic places, she found them interesting and elegant. She had taught the younglings that sometimes the most frightening things in the dark are your best friends (she taught six and seven year olds) because they are misunderstood. The darkness rippled outward, like rain dripping into a stagnant pool and the ripples radiating outward.

Looking up from her book, Hekate looked around before meditating on the hum of the Force. She felt it...

Not it, him. He was calling to her, Lord Draconis. It was time.

Carefully putting the volume away, she left to the library to join her Headmaster.

As she attempted to leave the library she would feel an impulse and pull... contrary to her will to leave and meet her new master. This was not her diobeying, but merely an unseen force yanking her back and preventing her from leaving this "library"

Hekate was not forcefully pulled back but it was enough of a jolt to imbue the unnatural motion of it.

The sound of children behind her was clearly audible behind her within the library. As the visage of dozens of eager young students, could be seen throughout. Going about their studies, interacting, drawing books from shelves, and learning in groups. Deeply fixated on the matters of the knowledge held in this place. They would seem so real to Hekate, she would even recognize many of them as pupils. Hekate being a bright young teacher among the Sith ranks, and having taken on a role within the orders cadre of instructors.

The mornign sun illuminating their faces, as Hekate might be drawn to mingle upon them as she regularly did. A familiar scene to her, in her element as it were.

    Still something was off...

The feeling of dread was not coming from the children, but something else. Passing through the maze of shelving units, Hekate could feel the clamminess of the shadows that lurked where the sunlight had not yet reached. It was here, these in between places that mold and decay still hung in the air, the aura of death hanging over the tomes like a musty blanket. She could still hear her pupils laughing as they went about their morning studies- she had them prepping for an exam tomorrow. With that happy thought, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Concentrate, she told herself.

Focusing on the odd feeling, she used the Dark Side to force itself (what ever it was) to shatter.

There was a sound of cracking glass, and as she looked up the mirror directly above her had cracked from side to side. Igniting her lightsaber, she smiled. It had been an illusion. A very clever illusion.

Darth Mu's lighthook's hum fills the room. In front of him is the headmaster. The headmaster's voice booms in Mu's ears. Mu was temporarily in awe. He deactivates the lighthook.

"My lord, I am Mu, Darth Mu. I, being a Sith, kowtows to no one. However, my lord headmaster deserves my bow. So here it is.

    *bows again*

"So, as I was saying, I seek the ultimate power of being a Sith. It has eluded me for so long. I will not fail. Teach me, my lord."

After a few minutes of silence, Darth Mu raises his head. It was good it did, because he felt another presence.

    "My lord Headmaster?"

No, it was someone else. Where did the headmaster go? Was he still here? The presence is elusive. Yet in front of Darth Mu was a figure. Could it be another Sith? Or has the Jedi infiltrated the academy?

Darth Mu's lighthook was again activated. The familiar hum gives him focus. He points the weapon in the figure's direction.

The shards of the broken mirror above cascaded down, further shattering down on the stone floor of the library, careening off bookshelves and shattering further into smaller pieces. From around the corner Hekate would hear the children's laughter turn to screams as the sound of glass shattering was evident not just where Hekate had been, but also where the children were. Every action had consequences, and potential cascading effects. The sounds of the children's screams would grow louder as the sound of impacting broken glass corresponded with them. Her students, precious and prized. Killed by their own teacher... how? The screams seemed to fade as if being whisked away by a strong wind, trailing off. Revealing that all of her students were gone, or had never been there to begin with...

There was no shattered glass, no blood, nothing. The library was empty again. Silent. Aside form the smell of smoke back among the book shelves.

An eerie silence filled the dusty, but sunlit library as Hekate made her way to where she had heard the ominous crack. She retraced her steps, her light footfalls echoing heavily, her red lightsaber blade dancing against the morning sun. The Southern Archives were large, so it took Hekate at least ten minutes to return where she had started. The book she had been pouring over for the last several days had been a tome relating to Sith poetry and obscure legends dating back to the unknown past, when Force Users were seen as gods, rather than mortals. As she let her fingers splay against the blacked ink, one of the letters reached out and bit her- drawing her blood as a poem appeared on the page:

    Neverwhere, neverwhere,
    Nothing o'clock: Where one
    Story ends, Another begins!

    Children of shadows fly
    Away home. The Mistress
Has Come to Tidy the Room,
And Continue on out to the Stars.

    Neverwhere, neverwhere,
    Nothing o'clock: Where one
    Story ends, Another begins!

At first glance, Hekate would have laughed. This was a simple children's rhyme, nothing more. However, even simple rhymes had more meaning, and what better place to start looking for shadows than with... fire? Smelling the smoke, she made her way to where the inferno was blazing.
