The Black Star nightclub, Las Vegas

I will kill each and every one of these gentlemen behind me.

The room slowed around her and her thoughts stilled, sounds dulling to muffled background noise. All she saw or heard was him.

There is nothing either of you can do about it.

An eerie calm settled over Mira as Mr. Simon continued. Where she might’ve normally laughed him off, maybe picked a fight for her own enjoyment… now she was frozen in place, her mouth dry and her throat tight. Somehow she knew, somehow she understood he was completely, deadly serious. She could see the truth in his words, feel them even, a dark chill running the length of her spine.

    Though, she did not run.

But I am willing to spare you and save your kid.

Something inside her opened then, a ruthless survival instinct she had thought she no longer had a use for. It was a savage selfishness that she had long since locked away because she and Ava Jean had been safe, protected and provided for - with Damian - a man she had never loved but desperately needed just the same.

Mira straightened, standing as tall as her petite frame allowed, her eyes still not having left this odd, yet commanding stranger. Peripherally she was aware that her husband and his men were watching the pair of them with unwavering scrutiny. The fear she had heard in his voice had shook her, even knowing how deeply he cared for a daughter that was not of his blood. Her resolve cracked.

Could she sacrifice him? Could she sacrifice all he had done for that little girl upstairs? And all the lives in this room for the life of her daughter?

It was an automatic, without thought type of movement, her body put into motion as if she were controlled by unseen forces. Because it wasn’t a question, was it? Mira would do anything - anything, for Ava Jean. And so she had seamlessly moved back around the bar, her gaze now set upon Damian, a determination burning inside of her that kept all of her thoughts in order.

“Mr. Simon will help,” she told him as she approached, stopping only when she was but a foot in front of him. Her head craned back to look up at his towering form. “However, he requires payment. Upfront.” She held a surprisingly steady hand out, palm up.

“He would like what is already his, and once he has it, Ava will be healed.”

Mira knew the expression she was putting on for Damian, one that he would see as sad and lost, one she had used to her advantage more times than she could count. Under less dire circumstances, she might’ve worried how easy it was for her to act this way and without remorse. Now was not one of those times.

Hong Kong Airport, Transit/Quarantine Zone, Kowloon

Getting to Hong Kong had been easy and by the time she arrived she had located the address of all five pieces. All located in the area around Nathan Road, the former shopping paradise of Hong Kong.

The trouble began once they left the military airplane. She was greeted by John Shaw, diplomatic services of Beijing. He explained that the Hong Kong embassy had not reported in for 24 hours, but a sole CIA agent was still active within City limits. He could not leave though, as he was infected with the Black Doctor. So Shaw had been flying in to negotiate her access to the city.

The halls of the airport were filled with quick test booths and soldiers in full HAZMAT suits patrolled the corridors. "They were lucky, they got the suits. Beijing ran out of them rather quickly." Shaw explained as they passed the crowded halls to the office of the commanding officer.

They needed a simple permission to enter the city.

That was more difficult than expected. Her Mandarin was not good enough to follow all the details, but the man Shaw talked to was a Colonel of the Chinese Army and he was adamant that HK was a hot zone. Sitting in his small bureau he was clearly on the brink of collapse, being left alone to fight a war against an invisible enemy you could not shoot. No. Nobody got in or out. Order of the bureau, which meant the all-powerful communist party. The measure was probably no more up-to-date anymore, as outbreaks had been reported in all of the Pacific Rim. But a soldier who got his orders did not question them. Only after Shaw stressing the fact she was on a mission ordered by the President of the United States, accepting full responsibility and repeating several times it was a mission of incredible urgency the Colonel called the bureau and after an hour he reached someone. He seemed not to be very successful in getting a permission and asked for several people who seemed not to be there. It looked as if Beijing was hit as hard as the News had speculated. The Government of China was no longer functional and when he returned the Colonel shrugged and looked directly at Maria.

"I am very sorry, I got my orders. Nobody goes in." He said in broken English to her and it was undeniable how tired he looked.

    Simon
    The Club, Vegas

Simon enjoyed the coffee and stayed behind the bar. As the girl talked to Damian he let his eyes wander from man in the room to the other.

He could be subtle. He could be precise. But Damian Kai had preferred to present his power. He choose a vulgar display of his ability to hurt Simon. Simon would answer it in the same fashion. The thought alone made the room bristle with energy. Space bending slightly, only visible to him. It was the anticipation of his will forced on what many considered an unbreakable law of nature.

There was no law that could not be broken by men like him. Simon knew that very well. He had learned it many years ago. Long before this new breed of "Gifted" had shown up to challenge him and his kind.

Now he was the last survivor. The final survivor. The last man standing. How could a dwarf like Damian Kai dare to challenge him.

Even Kai seemed to know and he grabbed into his pocket and slowly drew out the vial, enclosed on unbreakable glass. He gave it to the girl without saying a word.

"There you are. Now keep your part of the deal." He spit to Simon. The man returned his gaze with a smile and put out the cigarette by pressing it on the bar.

"Bring it to me." He said to the girl and extended the hand he had used to kill the cigarette.

    Matt Andrews
    Office

Matt had not expected Gates to take this serious enough. He was a fool after all. Ambitious and The Washington Mix.

The idea passed his mind that with Anna Talbott he could make them win any election. He would never do that, but Gates had probably never understood the power Matt wielded through TARC. Had Gates ever been a threat it would have been easy enough to take him out of the equation like Ayshe did with so many before him. Child pornography on his computer? Easy. Suspicious documents leaking from his office? Not a problem.

Gates had been ignorant to such dangers it seemed.

"I will be prepared and ready." Matt assured the man and then leaned back.

The Report troubled him though. A substance found in the attacker? Did they boost the powers of their Gifted? The enemy was one step ahead or more. How had this happened? Where did an enemy find such know how?

He could only hope Anna Talbott was as powerful as Changte claimed. A LEGO on their side. Because if not, he did not know how they would win this war.

"That's everything I assume." He said. "Then I got a lot of reading to do."

Doctors Office. . .or not still at TARC central. . .maybe?

The feeling never went away, but it changed. Dying by chance, dying by force, dying by choice. They always were filled with senses of dread, hope, and when you learned to accept it the fear and pain and. . . awfulness just seemed to fade away. If you did it right, death could be a good thing. The hard part was waking up and making that feeling a reality, making those replayed moments count. Unfortunately this time as he woke up, the ceiling was wrong.

Now that might be an odd thing to notice on waking up, but it was important. He was dying for a reason, for a purpose. For life, to save life, and to maybe, just maybe if he was lucky save a girl he barely knew. Because everyone else had accepted, had chosen, but she had just barely began to be given a choice and didn't even really know yet. He had owed her, just he had owed all of them. Owed them what he never had.

Then he was there, the Doctor, he was supposed to be there, but the ceiling was still wrong. And now that he had turned his head this wasn't a cushion, it was a proper pillow and the floor was far too soft. Crumb, how long had been? The mere thought welled up panic, which the Good Doc, thankfully, saw and explained the situation. The survivors, the losses, the small satisfaction at some victory in the situation.

Kawin wished he could take the same satisfaction. "He wasn't a rogue. Was he." he simply stated as he stared down at his unsupported body. "I need to get dressed." he simply said in that moment. The sorrow and sadness of it all weighing heavily on him. If only he could believe it was worth it.

Mira’s eyes drifted downwards as Damian did as he was asked, procuring a single glass vial from a jacket pocket. It appeared unremarkable to her at first, but the very fact that Mr. Simon had requested it as his payment for saving Ava Jean made it far more intriguing than it looked.

What was inside? What did it do? Was it the remedy for her child’s illness?

The last thought caused her to wince slightly as it was placed into the palm of her outstretched hand. She couldn’t tell if it was actually heavy or if the weight of its possibilities was what pressed into her skin. She barely breathed as her fingers wrapped one by one around the fragile container, though her heart had begun to race again.

    "Bring it to me."

Her head whipped around to see Simon waiting expectantly. With a last glance at Damian, who was carrying on acting as if she wasn’t even there, Mira slowly turned and walked back to the bar. Stopping before him, instead of immediately handing the vial over, she raised her hand and pressed her clenched fist protectively to her chest.

    She had to ask.

“Is this what will save her?”

Laura nodded to the soldier her approval.

"Very good. Once we arrive on scene I want your guys to keep a distance. We want the attackers to make their move not scare them away."

With a nod confirming her order she climbed into the limousine. "We take it from here, Lieutenant." Then she remembered the report. "But I need a full medical team on the ground once we got the attackers. They shall examine the blood of the victims immediately and forward the results to TARC HQ." Denning. She needed to get him into the loop. "They shall contact Dr. Denning of TARC right away. He will advise them what to look for."

Simon took a long moment to look at the girl and then lay his head aside. "Maybe it is. Does it make a difference?" He asked her and took another breath from his cigarette. "Give it to me or ... join them. Maybe you're lucky. I mean they are six or seven or so ... I am alone."

He smiled at her. But really he felt the games got boring. The joy of toying with them lasted shorter and shorter. The tribute in blood the reluctance demanded became higher and higher every time.

"I am fine either way." He said and concentrated on her, imagining her body crumble, turn to dust ... would she understand? Before she was gone, would she understand who ... what he was?

Why did it even matter to him?

He extended his hand demanding the vial.

Mira glanced down at his open hand, the calmness of his voice simultaneously mesmerizing and yet, incredibly terrifying. Her own hand briefly clutched at the vial she held, her grip tightening as she pressed it harder into her sternum, staring back into his eyes. Ridiculous and impossible, there was the desperate urge to force the glass through her skin and inside her ribcage for protection. She didn’t know nor understand what it was she held in her hand, and yet she instinctually coveted the contents.

Still, swallowing the dread that took root in her throat, she decided to put her trust in this stranger, somehow realizing it was the only thing she could do. To anyone else not inside Mira’s overworked, over-stimulated and anxiety-riddled brain, this was the move you didn’t make. This was the girl running upstairs in a haunted house to escape the ghosts where she should have run straight out the front door. You shouted at her to run the other way, to flee. You knew as an outsider, this was the wrong choice.

    To anyone else.

    Not to her.

Staring up at Mr. Simon, his face surrounded in a noir halo of cigarette smoke and dim lighting, she reached out and gently set the mysterious vial in his hand, lingering there with her own as she took a single deep breath. Then she pulled away quickly as if burned by his touch, stepping back a few paces along the bar, uncertain of what is was that was about to take place.

Her green eyes flitted back to Damian, though her gaze held little concern for his wellbeing. She felt that same cold, emotionless chill rise back up, overrunning her senses.

    Anything for Ava.

    Simon
    The Club, Vegas

Simon took the vial and looked at it. Then he allowed it to vanish in his pocket. He looked down at the girl and smiled.

"Get behind me." He said calmly. Giving her a smile made of ice. Then he turned his eyes up to Damian Kai.

"Your behavior is intolerable of course. Without knowing your reasons, I must say I am shocked and disappointed by the lack of trustworthiness you Gentlemen have displayed. There is really only one judgment the seems to be fair."

Damian breathed out with a hiss ... as Mira would know the prelude to violence usually ... his hand wandering to his gun and his eyes now fixed on Simon.

"We got a deal." He said and all his men grabbed their weapons.

"No we don't." Simon smiled. "I got a deal with her." He nodded to the girl and before any of them could make another breath he unleashed a single thought. A thought so powerful it could bend, break and command the laws of nature.

The thought folded space itself, condensing it in one point in the room and Simon laughed out in a single barking laugh as chaos ensured.

Within a second every atom, every perceivable matter was sucked into this point. Wood, stone, metal, plastic, bones and flesh ... the flesh of every human in front of him ... it all burst and was inevitably dragged to this very point, forming a meddled ball of matter. No scream, no noise as even the sound was absorbed by his power. It all just ceased to exist.

It lasted a second and then it was over. Nothing remained except a cloud of dust that slowly spread in the room from the point he had chosen. No chair, machine or carpet or human being existed anymore beyond the bar where he put down his half empty cup of coffee. Behind the bar not a single thing had moved or been affected. A part of the roof collapsed as the pillar holding it had vanished.

"What is your name, girl?" He asked as if he had not just shattered her existence and probably her view on reality itself. "I am Simon, by the way. But my friends and foes usually refer to me as ALPHA."

Limousine, then Mansfield L.A., Los Angeles, California

The soldier flashed a cheeky grin at Anna’s response, clearly enjoying the light banter; the view wasn’t half-bad either. “Secret agents are about a dime a dozen,” he drawled with a shrug, shifting his firearm to the opposite shoulder and relaxing back a bit. “But I’ve never met a superhero before. What’s your power? Are you kinda like Superman? Or maybe you would prefer Wonder Woman instead.”

Lt. Barnes paused in his briefing with Laura to give the young soldier a warning glance, but said nothing. There was something about his demeanor that seemed to suggest that he wouldn’t be upset if Anna chose to show off a bit; in fact, he might have even encouraged it.

Turning back to Laura, Barnes gave a curt nod. “I was afraid you’d say that,” he sighed in response to her statement about taking over. He flashed a small, bitter smile. “We’ve taken the liberty to prepare the scene, and everything will be as you request, Ma’am. Your contact is a Dr. Harry Graham; 30 year veteran to this particular facility and the project lead. He has been briefed by my team and he knows to cooperate with us directly. The guy has a wealth of knowledge – you know how these science types are, so he should be able to answer any questions you may have.” He made an arc with his hand, eyeing Anna warily. “If you should run into any trouble, my men will be on standby. Just give the signal.”

The Lieutenant then glanced down at his notes and brushed his lip in thought. “And you shall have your medical team. They are already enroute and should be arriving within the hour. I will also alert Doctor Denning momentarily.” He hesitated for a moment. “But Ma’am...wouldn’t it be easier to coordinate everything on-site? I’m sure Mansfield could contribute a doctor or two to your efforts.”

Before Laura could answer, the limo pulled up before a tall building with windows running along its entire length; it looked more like a museum than a functioning science and research center. It was yet another testament to Mansfield’s influence and wealth. They certainly spared no expense when it came to their public persona...even when that persona was beginning to crumble under the first rumblings of a conspiracy…

Outside in the small courtyard, a tall man with graying hair, glasses, and a stubbled face stood with a pair of security guards. He wrung his hands nervously as they approached and only managed a small smile once the limo came to a stop and the doors opened.

    This was Dr. Graham.

McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada

Air Force One touched down on schedule to the usual fanfare that one would expect from a visit from the President of the United States. The media pool lined one side of the tarmac, including TV cameras and reporters from various news organizations. Local leaders, prominent businessmen, and other spectators occupied the other, and together they created a literal nightmare for the Secret Service to manage – it was that way anytime the circumstances called for the President to run the gauntlet and interact with the crowd.

It was easy to hide within the chaos; to lace a glove with poison, or perhaps pull a gun from the confines of a bulky jacket. With everyone preoccupied by the President himself, no one would be the wiser…

No one except the Secret Service.

Agent Richter had played that scenario through his head several times over the years, but fortunately, it had never come to pass. And if he had it his way, this trip would be more of the same. Leading the charge through the horde, Richter kept a steady pace with Maria Preston at his side. No doubt he was still leary about these…’Gifted’ being integrated into his team, but he could not deny their effectiveness. Their powers were something extraordinary, and he made sure to have one at point and the other – Steven Alden – hanging back with the President and the Veep.

Everything was going smoothly until they reached the halfway point to the motorcade awaiting them outside the main hangar. In that moment, the crowd began to surge forward in a tremendous wave, pressing against the barricades as they shouted and waved their hands for attention, many of them members of the media trying to get their questions answered for the record. Richter immediately began issuing orders to keep the peace, trying to place himself between his charge and the mob that was growing more rowdy by the minute.

That’s when a scream issued from somewhere near the back, the sound easily carrying above the din of the crowd. This was quickly followed by a loud ‘pop.’

    Chaos ensued.

    Wesco, Nevada

The scene continued to evolve the longer they sat in the busy parking lot; what had begun as a quiet meeting with the Sheriff coming around to greet the driver of the car soon escalated into a frantic scuffle. The Sheriff became animated as he waved his hands wildly at the man behind the wheel, his head bobbing along with his rising voice. While Jane and Ambrose could not make out the words over the steady thrum of the nearby highway, the altercation was loud enough that other patrons were starting to take notice and stare.

The Sheriff, suddenly aware that he was drawing attention to himself, stopped and stepped away from the car as if stunned. It was at this point that the bald-headed driver took over, seeming to talk some sense into the other man, the Sheriff nodding along with understanding.

Finally, the Sheriff backpedaled even further, stepping up onto the curb to allow the car to back away from the parking space. Even at this distance, he looked lost as the car circled the gas pumps, passing Jane and Ambrose, before peeling out onto the highway. Again, there was a certain urgency to their actions...almost as if they were in the midst of an emergency.

“Should we follow?” Ambrose spoke into the silence, his hand coming to rest on the wheel with obvious agitation. “Or stick with our mark?” He nodded his chin towards the Sheriff, who was glancing down at his watch...as if counting down to something. The man then pivoted on his heel to return to his patrol car, but before he could settle in behind the wheel, he paused and angled his head to look in their direction. He seemed to lock eyes with Jane.

From beside Jane, Ambrose uttered a curse and started to turn the ignition.

Doctor Denning’s expression remained impassive as he scrawled some notes on his clipboard. He seemed hesitant to reveal too much, but he had a duty to perform...if only to honor Paul’s memory. Besides, Kawin was one of the original recruits and arguably one of the few who truly understood what was happening.

With a weary sigh, he finally nodded, glancing up studiously above his wire-frame glasses. “No, he wasn’t,” he confessed quietly. “We...ran some tests, and we found a foreign substance in his bloodstream. Although the results haven’t come back yet, we have reason to believe that it may be linked to his abilities.” He shrugged as if this was not a big revelation. No doubt Kawin was smart enough to fill in the blanks.

Denning was thankful for the distraction when the young man revealed his intentions to presumably leave the med center. “I don’t think that’s wise,” he offered with a small smile. While he had his concerns about his health, he knew he couldn’t stop him. “If it’s up to me, I’d have you in that bed until the weekend.”

Pressing his lips together firmly, he then reached inside his coat to produce a small envelope. “But...I’m afraid it’s not up to me, not at this point. Not with your powers.” Stepping towards the bed, the doctor handed Kawin the envelope. “I was ordered to give this to you once you were well enough...at Paul’s request.”

    Parking Lot, Wesco, Nevada

Jane sat back watching the scene unfold. The anger of the Sheriff built and built until it seemed to take over his body, lashing out at the driver. Even from where she was she could hear faintly his voice though it was made indistinct by the distance and the highway. Those nearby however began to give cross looks, or startled glances. Looked like the lawman was making a scene, getting noticed. That wasn't too big of an issue just as long as she didn't get noticed, or that he didn't recognize her purpose.

The Sheriff eventually took notice reeling back a little shocked that he was causing a commotion. The driver started to talk him down. The older man began to nod, understanding the words said by the bald man, though it didn't answer the one question burning in Jane's mind. What caused Jackson to turn on the driver, what was the spark that caused this explosion of anger.

Eventually her target backed away looking shocked, stunned a little confused. The honda drove past the pair of assassins before peeling out getting on the highway leaving the poor confused old man standing in the lot. There was an urgency to the fleeing like there was something more going on than just sending them away for their safety, to protect them from the killers set on his trail. She thought briefly of the quarantine, the thing her and Ambrose had to avoid on their way in. Was this lovely city next on the list or was Mrs. Jackson not taking chances.

"Should we follow?" Ambrose spoke breaking the silence his hand gripping the wheel like he wanted to strangle it. "Or stick with our mark?"

"Stick with the Sheriff, he's our target not them." She kept her gaze moving about the space making sure they weren't drawing attention just sitting and waiting for something to happen. Out of the corner of her eye she saw her mark making his way to his car. Good now they just follow him until he stops somewhere secluded and finish this job.

She turned her head seeming to lock eyes with Sheriff Jackson. Was it a moment of recognition? Did he know why she was here, what she planned to do. The uttered curse reached her ears.

"Drive, if he follows we lead him out of town. If he pulls us over, try to talk our way out, failing that, we'll have to improvise. If he doesn't follow us, we turn and follow him." She drew her pistol keeping it out of sight should things get rough she would be ready.

Laura looked at Lt. Barnes and nodded. "They could. But I don't trust them."

She waited for Anna to get into the car and closed the door. Mansfield was not under their control, but what was more important ... they were the most likely source of the Serum. "And we won't need your men. If she can't stop them, you certainly won't. Just get the medics on site." Shutting the door she leaned back and looked at Anna. "Ready?" She asked and gave her a reassuring smile. Her life depended on the girl. She knew that. But Anna was a joker the other side could not have foreseen.

When they arrived Laura got out and headed straight to the figure she assumed was Dr. Graham.

"Graham? My name is Laura Changte, I am the current acting director of TARC and I will make this really easy for you." She looked at the security detail.

"The same guys did nothing for Berlin. They won't work here. I guess you figured out the nature of the attacker before we did. You are the experts after all. So we can protect you, but we are really here for the attackers. If we make contact before or after they killed all of you makes little difference to me personally. So show me you got value. How? Answers! Why are they attacking you? You must have a theory by now." Laura looked at Anna. "We would like to hear it."

    “Get behind me.”

His words were kind enough, or at least a projection of ‘kind’. His expression, however, told Mira an entirely different tale. On the surface it was a smile, but what lie beneath was the farthest from nice, briefly locking her in place as a ripple of fear clenched at her chest. Still, she managed to force her thin, wobbly legs into motion, returning behind the bar and not stopping until she was directly at Mr. Simon’s back, just as he had told her.

She was shaking visibly, her thoughts returning to Ava Jean and how desperately she wanted to run upstairs to be with her. Had she gotten worse in her short absence? She really needed to-

Suddenly the room was filled with the familiar clicks and clacks of weapons coming into play and she knew her time to leave had long since passed. She was stuck, and the idea that she might die here instantly became very real. Her stomach turned uncomfortably, the air squeezed from her lungs.

“We got a deal,” Damian demanded, his eyes meeting hers for but a moment. She knew she would look wild to him, a common occurrence - her own eyes bloodshot and wide, skin clammy and washed of most of its color. But what she saw in him was something new. His brow furrowed in confusion and he looked… scared. Pleading? Sad.

"No we don't. I got a deal with her,” Simon challenged with a slight turn of the head and a nod in her direction.

The rest was, and would remain, a chaotic blur.

Where everything had been still and filled with anticipatory tension - surely shots would be fired any minute now - was instead replaced with a static burst of sorts, an invisible wave that lit every nerve in her body with an electric charge. This anomaly was proceeded by an unnatural torrent of wind which swept throughout the entire main room of Black Star. So much, too much happened in such a small window of time that her mind had absolutely no way of truly comprehending what was actually taking place.

Her gaze had never left Damian and she watched as he just…. vanished. Shoved out of existence, along with the other men, the furniture, the décor, part of the outer wall… another section crumbling without its support column… also gone… sucked into a pinprick of…of… well, of NOTHING.

Mira scarcely had time to react, let alone scream and as a cloud of dust spread out from a nonpoint at the room’s center, all that escaped her lips was a soft whimper. Her body was rigid and she found terror in movement of any kind.

The violence of what she had just seen was impossible; unfathomable.

    “… your name, girl?"

She heard a voice, as if someone were shouting at her underwater. Her ears were ringing, her eyesight beginning to swing in and out of focus. " -Simon, by the way…. usually refer to me as ALPHA."

Mira took one look at him and the room tilted, her knees buckling along with it. Promptly collapsing to the floor, she retched onto the rows of glasses that lined the shelves below the bar. Dry-heaving twice after, she was panting, tears streaming down her bright-red cheeks as she slowly tilted her head back to try and focus on Simon. A new wave of nausea threatened to overcome her again.

“Mira,” she whispered hoarsely, suddenly hopeful she would pass out. “Who… what the ****… is Alpha?”

    Maria Liang
    Hong Kong, Transit Quarantine Zone

Maria had not expected things to be so bad. She felt sympathy for the man and his responsibility. He watched the most glowing city burning out. His job was simple. He tried to do it well. But he had to let her in.

"Mr. Shaw, please leave us alone." Maria said and looked at the US diplomat. Once he was out, she stepped to the desk of the Colonel and looked him right into his eyes.

"One soldier to another. Okay?" She sighed. "I am sent here by my President ... and I mean personally by him ... because we have info there is a man in HK who might be able to help us. And I do not mean the USA when I say us, I mean humanity." She gave him a dry smile. "Nonsense you think? Yeah. Maybe. But do you think this here is working?" She circled with her finger. "So you don't have to let me through. I see how you cannot do this. Why don't you show me the security perimeter and when I start running inside you simply don't shoot me in the back?" She raised her brow. "Stupid Americans, you know?" She smiled. "Always looking for trouble."

    IC: Kawin Muthurangu
Medical Center, TARC Headquarters, Alexandria, Virginia

He began to get his bearings, this was indeed the TARC Medical Center in headquarters. The odd number of tiles and the patterns lined up, of course Doctor Denning’s expression remained impassive as he scrawled some notes on his clipboard. Still the truth was there, no quick reassurances, no eye contact. Classic Doctor speak for 'I wish someone else could give this news, how do I say it?'.

Well, that was worse news than he was expecting. That had a world of implications that made his thoughts about all of this twenty times worse. A situation the world and TARC were ill suited to handle unless this person that his old tangential friend had lead them to was truly the key to surviving everything again. Kawin lowered his head at this, his eyes closed for a moment as he just tried to digest this.

Dr. Dennings had something to say about leaving. “I don’t think that’s wise,” he offered with a small smile. While he had his concerns about his health, he knew he couldn’t stop him. “If it’s up to me, I’d have you in that bed until the weekend.”

That was a Doctor not wanting to admit that they weren't all powerful, ah a blessed window that it was his choice. "Well, then I am in luck. I need to do something besides lie here. Even if it is just get up to speed." Opening his eyes he nodded firmly, setting his mind to that course of action. At least until the Doctor had more to say.

Pressing his lips together firmly, the Dr. then reached inside his coat to produce a small envelope. “But...I’m afraid it’s not up to me, not at this point. Not with your powers.” Stepping towards the bed, the doctor handed Kawin the envelope. “I was ordered to give this to you once you were well enough...at Paul’s request.”

Taking it he fingered the envelope and looked with questioning eyes to the Doctor. With a set of trepidation he began to tear the envelope open, he had to admit, he felt more fear in this moment then he had about that last death.

    Anna Talbott
    Airfield and L.A. Mansfield facility

Anna considered showing the soldier, but then she disciplined herself. She was probably a state secret. "I look damn good on photos." She simply replied and entered the car. Laura gave her a smile and asked if she was ready. "Not really." She replied with a cheeky smile.

But she did her best to prepare. She was aware she would fight. She was not a fighter. She felt her legs growing weak even at the thought of it.

When they arrived Laura went into the offense, demanding answers from the Doctor leading the facility. Anna wondered how her role was to be played in all of this. She decided to remain calm ... which was a challenge ... and look serious. But when Laura gave her that look, she knew she had her part to play.

"And if I were you I would answer quickly. Because when these things happen, you would not believe how fast they happen." She added, thinking of Farmer. He would have killed these security guys before one of them blinked. A thought that gave her a shiver.

"It is worse than you think. Inside there, we got an 80% infection rate. Maybe higher by now. If you go in there Ma'am, you are gonna die there. Do you understand? Nobody escapes the Black Doctor beyond the bridge."

He looked at her with genuine concern.

Finally he sighed. "Do you truly understand?"

Simon smirked. Then he turned towards the girl. "No idea, I never asked them. Guess Alpha was an expression of my ... doesn't matter." He took out the vial. "Everyone who knew is dead."

    He stepped towards her.

"You were right. This is what saves your little girl. But it is not without it's side-effects." He put the vial on the bar and put an injector from his other pocket next to it.

"Inject her all of it and your child will have a long and interesting life." He looked at the dust settling down. "You got five minutes to do so and pack your stuff. Then I will do to the building what I just did to your ... whatever he was."

He took out a cigarette and lighted it. "Four minutes fifty five seconds." He just said and lighted it.

It was only one dose of the serum of course. Only enough to save the child.

ooc: A bit raw and unpolished, but Iteration send this to me to get working on a combined and as he can't post right now he asked me to post it.

    Steven Alden
Secret Service Command Center and Las Vegas Airport

Steven sighed and nodded. "Only the one I already gave. A Gifted must be with Phoenix at every time. We don't know what abilities a Gifted attacker might have. So in case they attack we must do exactly what you said we shouldn't. We must improvise and the get as much space between Phoenix and then as possible. Probably at the expense of your guys."

He frowned. "Flashbang grenades. We have discussed the use at TARC. These guys can manipulate time, they are no superheroes. They won't be super strong or resilient. Blind them and bust their eardrums out might be still very effective. Concerning combat tactics, I'd say continuous fire has the best chance. Many Gifted cannot hold up their powers for long. So we must make sure we are not reloading when they give us an opening. One last thing. No prisoners. Surrender must be ignored. They might only charge or refocus. If they attack, all your men should kill without mercy." He sighed.

"Maybe I should talk to them about what to expect. We have catalogued most powers that are common and it might help them to be less surprised."

A few hours later they arrived at Las Vegas Airport and Steven simply stayed next to the President and left the real work to the Secret Service. Then it happened. A pop. Chaos. Everything went out of control so fast, just as Richter had described it. But no Gifted were yet visible. Steven stepped half a step aside to allow the agents to do whatever was their routine now and he concentrated on the crowd. He doubted Gifted would take such a public place to attack, but they knew too little about them to be sure. So he kept his eyes open and focused on the crowd, looking at the people for any sign of something only he could see. In the back of his mind he tried to remember what was about to happen. He always did that when surprised by something.

    The Colonel and Maria Liang
    Hong Kong, Transit Quarantine Zone

Maria knew he was right. She was no super hero and not even trained in medics. The chances of getting infected were overwhelming. What was worse, was she expected this code red quarantine to be the forplay of a much radical desperate measure. They would wipe out the population in an attempt to slow the spreading of the virus. It was their only hand to play.

"I fully understand." She finally said. "Thank you."

Colonel Chow nodded. "The breach of security I could forgive you. What will make me really angry is the emergency pack you stole from me with the gloves and gas mask in. You know the yellow one behind you." He nodded and then gave orders in Mandarin over his radio.

When they went outside they saw Shaw was now in the line for testing, a soldier keeping him in place against his will. His protest was cut short by violent coughing.

"Follow me." The Colonel only said and his look told the whole story. Shaw was already dead to him.

They took a chopper to the outside perimeter, passing the collapsed bridges that had been blown up. They touched down outside a double fence right in front of a double gate. Structures with snipers and powerful spotlights were installed there and towers had been set up which where housing snipers. Far away shots could be heard.

The Colonel just gestured and the gates opened. He made a gesture for Maria to follow and brought her to the second gate that opened slowly. Spotlights were running over them and the still running rotors of the helicopter were producing a strong wind in the otherwise tropical heat of the Hong Kong summer.

"Good hunting Ms. Liang." He said with a said smile. "Run." The same moment he held his hand up signaling the snipers not to shoot.

Maria did what she was told, she ran into the night of plague ridden Hong Kong.

    The Black Star, Las Vegas

The ceiling spun out of focus and Mira heaved once more, though there was nothing left in her stomach to vomit. She was still panting, gasping for air as pieces of what had just taken place flashed across her mind like fireworks – the implosion, Damian, this man. This… creature

    Alpha.

    "Four minutes fifty five seconds."

Mira rocked back on her heels and wiped her mouth with the back of a hand, registering everything he was saying at once.

    Ava.

Reaching to grasp the lip of the bar with both hands, she pulled herself up despite an incredibly worn and exhausted body. Adrenaline was somehow finding its way back into her limbs and organs from a place deep, deep down, a place solely reserved for her daughter. Leveling a look at him as he lit a cigarette, casual and calm as if snapping his fingers and literally shattering reality happened everyday – maybe it did – she snatched the vial and injector from the bar top and shot off, also swiping her black bag from beneath the register as she passed by.

It was a struggle to remain upright and Mira stayed close to the walls and railings as she made her way upstairs, bursting through the front entry to Gloria pacing and waving frantically down the hall. She had been crying, unable to speak.

“Please god, no,” Mira choked, charging forward with a surge of determined energy. She entered her daughter’s bedroom with a hysterical Gloria on her heels and nearly fainted all over again. Little Ava was laid back against her pillows, white as a sheet and seemingly unconscious. There was a damp washcloth on the floor by the bed as well as a spilt glass of water. “Ava, don’t!

She lunged for the bed, falling to her knees right beside the girl’s face. Shaking hands somehow functioned enough to insert the vial properly into the injection device and she shook her child gently to see if she would wake. Thankfully she did stir, but would not open her eyes.

“Miss! I tried to keep her cool… wouldn’t stop coughing… there was an earthquake… so scared… Mr. Damian will help, yes? What is this?”

Her friend rattled on as she hovered over her shoulder, finally noticing the mysterious remedy to Ava’s illness within her grasp. There was no time for an explanation.

    Four minutes fifty five seconds…

Not sure where it was she should inject the substance, she quickly decided on the upper arm, trying to imagine this being like a flu shot and pressed the proper end to the girl’s skin. Pulling the trigger immediately after, Gloria shrieked in surprise and confusion but Mira ignored her, dropping the device and scooping Ava into her arms along with a blanket for warmth. There was a small whimper from the bundle she carried as she staggered to her feet once more, a sound that simultaneously showered her with relief and clenched at her heart in anguish. Either way she could not stop moving, making a beeline for her own bedroom, trying her best not to look at any of Damian’s personal possessions as she gently laid her child down upon the unmade bed.

“Miss, what did you give her?” Gloria demanded urgently, following. “Should’ve gone to the hospital, please what did Mr. Damian say…”

“Damian is gone,” Mira responded absently, already rummaging through several dresser drawers and her closet. This entire place, her entire life save for Ava seemed completely detached from her now, as if she were looking at it all from afar. It didn’t matter, none of it mattered anymore. She resigned herself to this line of thought as she stuffed several items into her bag before quickly changing out of her work attire. Pulling on a pair of dark grey joggers, a loose-fitting tank with a black zip-up hoodie and finishing with a pair of old sneakers, she had the bag Gloria had half-packed previously for Ava and quickly added a few things before closing it.

Gone?! How could he leave now-“

“Gloria STOP!” Mira turned on her friend, pleading with her to cooperate. “We have no time for this. Things have happened… that are…. happening.” She grabbed the older woman by her hands and squeezed. “We cannot stay here anymore. Understand? Come with me. NOW.”

Her voice, shrill and quaking, made her seem wholly unhinged. The fear that crossed over the caretaker’s face in reaction was plain as day, though being the strong woman she knew her to be, she firmed up and nodded once. “Yes, I go with you.”

Without another word, Gloria moved over and picked Ava up, tenderly wrapping her tighter in the blanket. Mira shouldered both bags and reached for her small pistol upon the nightstand - she had removed before prior to packing. The other two were already heading out of the room when she secured it at the small of her back, snug in the elastic of her pants. She followed as the trio raced down the stairs in tense silence, hustling back out into the main room and to the man that awaited them.

As she should’ve expected, Gloria gave a startled cry and came to a screeching halt once she saw the peculiar damage made by Alpha. There was no logical way to explain how it had all come to be, so she simply looked to the man at the center of the storm.

“Are we leaving with you?" she asked, afraid he would say yes just as much as she feared he would say no.

    The Club, Vegas

Simon smoked his cigarette and checked his burner phone for messages. One caught his attention. Farmer had been killed by a girl, his contact reported. By a girl who had no problem killing the man.

Anna Talbott. "Oh a late arrival to the game." He whispered and took another deep breath from his cigarette. He put the phone on the bar and a thought was all it took to make it vanish into a cloud of dust.

The girl appeared again. She was still having a minute. With her was her baby and an old Mexican woman. Maybe the nanny. She asked if she would come with him.

"Why would you?" He asked in return. "No, our business is concluded." He looked at the little girl. "Leave." He only said and killed the cigarette. "You got thirty seconds left to get as far away from the club as you can."

Actually Mira was one of the few people who ever learned who he was and survived it. She had probably no idea how lucky she was. But it was time they knew about him.

    Maria Liang
    Hong Kong

Maria ran until she could not see the lights of the quarantine anymore. Only then she took out her breather and gloves and put them on, before looking around. She was downtown, near the Manadrin Oriental and HSBC tower. A part of town once lively and the center of Asia's financial world was now abandoned. The streets were empty and cars stood on the streets like corpses left behind by a dying civilization.

Funny how quickly things ended. An pls woman with a trolley passed her and looked at her with mild curiosity, before coughing. A coughing so hard she almost collapsed. Maria quickly walked on. The American embassy was close. She had been here many years ago to oversee an operation for Adrian. She wondered what her former lover would have thought of all this. She could not help, but imagine it would beautifully underline his cynical view on humanity as a whole. Dog eat dog, he always said.

The mobile network was still working and she send a message to the sole remaining contact within the city.

A car passed her, darkened windows and at high speed. Far away she heard screams of a woman. She could not resist the urge to check her weapon.

Once she arrived at the embassy, just another glass and steel building in the endless line ups of similiar buildings, she saw the pale figure of a black haired man, her age. His eyes had dark rings and his gaze was hollow. "Ms. Liang, I assume." He said to her, his MP-5 over his shoulder. She nodded and took of her mask tomgive him a chance to identify her. "I would leave that on." He said and coughed. "Welcome to Hong Kong." He smiled then. "Where worlds end arrived early."

Maria sighed and put her mask on. "How bad is it?" She asked and almost feared the answer.

"The city turned from a hospital to a graveyard. I am the last member of the embassy alive." He smiled. "Or able to walk. So my apologies if I don't invite you in, but really you don't want to." He nodded. "Edward Archer." He introduced himself and then turned and took a briefcase behind him. "I managed to get what you wanted though." Another coughing shook his body. Far worse this time. "I hope whatever you are looking for is worth it." He only replied. "You find a GPS in there with four of the five pieces of art marked. Ammo. A map on paper. Some chocolate bars. About the only thing you can trust to eat now."

Maria nodded and took the briefcase, trying not to get to close to the man. "How long?" She asked him and her sympathy was real. A terrible way to die the man faced. He shrugged. "Was surprised I made it this far." He only replied. Maria gave him a nod. The man coughed again, this time blood covered his hand. He wiped it clean on his trousers. "In there are the keys to my motorbike. The Suzuki over there." He pointed at a green and white bike behind her. "May I ask?" He asked then. Maria looked at him and nodded.

"There is a man in Hong Kong we hope can ... help." She said. Archer laughed and was shaken by another assault of coughing. "A scientist?" She shook her hand. "He is special." She only replied.

Archer nodded. "Good hunting then." He said and weakened sat down on the pavement.

Maria nodded and opened the suitcase. She looked at the dying man for a long moment and took the keys.

"Thank you." She said and took out her gun. "I can help you. If you want."

The man looked at her and shook his head. "It's alright. I am a bastard. Believe me, I did worse to people." He smiled and Maria nodded a final time.

Then she turned and made her way to the Suzuki. Before she left she gave him a last look and saw Archer lie down on the pavement, fighting for breath. Quickly she speeded into the night into the area where the LEGO pieces were to be found.

The Black Star, Las Vegas, Nevada

Mira looked expectantly at Alpha, the worry on her face open and clear. It was just then registering with her that she hadn’t truly considered what it was that she had actually given her child - the mysterious lifesaving serum and whatever the side effects would be. The strange man in the bar, the one who had come crashing into her life to rescue her baby and impossibly snuff her husband from existence – she would surely need therapy after this -, had insinuated there would be consequences for accepting his aide.

Would Ava Jean be changed? Would her personality be altered after having been touched by such a deadly disease? Had he lied to her and given her something far worse?

She frantically looked back at the little girl, still cradled in Gloria’s arms. Ava’s eyes were now open completely and she appeared aware, a full flush to her cheeks where there had previously been none. She looked… better. Mira stepped over and took her daughter in her own arms, barely controlling the tears that threatened to overrun her eyes.

“Mommy,” her daughter whispered hoarsely, but strongly. “Who is that man?” Mira pulled back to glance from Alpha and back to Ava. Ava however was looking intently at him with a scrutinizing gaze that seemed somewhat… unnatural. It was too intense, too observant for a girl of her age. She wiped away stray locks of raven hair from the child’s face as she swallowed the lump forming in her throat.

“Baby, he is here to help us – you. He helped you…”

    "Why would you?"

She joined her daughter in eyeing him warily then. It was his response to her question of if they would leave together, if she and Ava were to stay with him. Having a moment more to think it over, why had she even thought they would? Why had she hoped they would?

    "No, our business is concluded."

    “But, we-“

"Leave. You got thirty seconds left to get as far away from the club as you can."

    “We don’t-“

“Mommy,” Ava said again, in an authoritative tone that froze her in place. She looked back to her child, the little girl’s attentions firmly focused upon her mother this time. Mira gazed into her eyes, their usual muddled green now a startlingly crystal-clear hue. Her breath caught as she noticed the subtle, but notable change. “Mommy, let’s go.”

Gloria, who had remained uncharacteristically silent since they had come into the main room, was suddenly right beside them both, a gentle but firm had upon Mira’s arm. “Mizz, yes please let us leave.” Her eyes were flashing back and forth to Alpha. She was positively panicked and terrified, but holding it together for them. Barely.

The three of them were suddenly in motion and heading straight for the main door at a quick pace, Mira being pulled along by the older woman beside her. The urgency seemed to hit them all of a sudden, the need to flee the Black Star and get as far away as possible. Where to next? She couldn’t be sure, but that didn’t matter. Not yet.

Just as they got to the exit and Gloria yanked the door open, the blindingly bright light of late morning flooding into the dimly lit club, Mira paused and turned to Alpha one last time. Her mouth opened, her words intending to be in thanks but a tiny voice rang out before she could say a thing.

“Thank you,” Ava Jean said to him instead, her mother simply nodding in his direction in agreement.

Then, they all turned as one and left.
