I think darth-sinister just means that if TCW had gone on longer, Lucas would have made it explicit in-series, that, for example, Plagueis was the apprentice before Maul, and that Plagueis and Maul were both apprentices at the same time for a while. So, the Rule of Two was never a hard-and-fast thing.

Disney has never "decanonised" any TCW aired content.

 

Right. We could probably learn about how the Jedi learned of Darth Bane and the rule, and it would tie up loose ends.

 

I don’t follow, or even really care, canonically, about the non-movie sources that much, but I’ve always thought the Rule of 2 made the most sense in the context that if you’ve ever been involved with any organization that has a decent amount of history, you will almost undoubtedly find that they have some rules that are really just a nuisance in certain situations, but they inevitably exist because at some point in the past when people had the freedom to choose when and where it was appropriate to take certain risks in order to avoid dealing with other problems, something went majorly wrong and now there’s just a blanket ban on that idea instead of trusting any individual’s ability to judge when exceptions should be applied. I also think the rule is “there can only be 2 Sith” and all the stuff about murdering each other is just a natural consequence of how they operate, rather than explicitly part of the belief system. The whole idea behind the rule of 2 is that the Sith were killing each other in the first place already. The rule exists just to give those conflicts more structure, so that 2 weaker Sith cannot team up and kill a stronger one. If an apprentice wants to overthrow their master they have to earn it.
