The Beginning, Part 3

I saw a flicker of movement in the corner of my eye, and then there stood before me a tall, slim, dark skinned woman, her large mass of tight curls held back from her face by a tie dyed bandanna. She took a slow drag on her hand rolled fag* and blew out a puff of smoke. Whatever she was smoking, it didn't smell like tobacc.

Merida stepped up beside her, still looking slightly annoyed. "This is my friend Tyra Moonstep. She likes to use her surname as an excuse to sneak up on people and scare them out of their wits."

"I noticed. Ace Makashi."

"Pleasure." She took a step back, and her eyes roamed over me in slow appraisal.

"So, you're lookin' for somethin', hmm?" Her gaze broke away from me and darted around the area. She stepped to the side, stuck a foot underneath a large rubbish bin, and pulled out a shiny cylinder. Maneuvering it onto her toe with the heel of her other foot, she launched it into the air and caught it in her hand, then held it out to me. "Reckon this could be yourn?"

I took the item from her and turned it over in my hand, sliding my thumb across the switch on the side, but not pressing it. The thing fit perfectly in my hand, as if it was made to be there, and the weight felt right too.

"I think it might be. Thanks."

Merida linked her arm through mine and began talking as she escorted me out of the alley. "Now that you have everything, enough hanging around here. Let's go."

"Where?"

"Well, you need a place to stay while you try to figure out who you really are, am I right?"

"I suppose so."

"Then it's settled. You're staying with me. And Tyra, would you stop ogling him? Force sakes, you're damn near old enough to be his mother....."

*Brit speak for cigarette. I was short on time and too lazy to think up something more original. February is a short month.

 

Merida is helpful; Tyra is a character! Glad Ace has back what he was looking for.

 

Yeah, when I first mentioned Tyra in a drabble, she was barely more than a name. Then when I wanted one of Merida's friends to show up, I decided to use Tyra instead of making up a whole new OC from scratch, and now she is definitely becoming her own person.

 

Whoever Ace is, please don't make him start smoking. He's found some bad influence there.

 

He will not become a smoker.

 

Curiouser and curiouser...

 

Which Brings Us To Now

Things moved quickly once we left the alley. Merida escorted me to her house, a neat little cottage. Tyra had been quiet during the relatively short walk, but now she put in her two credits again.

"Yanno, she don't have a spare room. Reckon you'll jest have to share hers."

Merida huffed. "He will not! There's a foldaway bed in the sofa, and you damn well know it!"

Tyra gave me another appraising glance. "Hmm. Now that's an idea..." She winked.

Merida sighed and put her arm around my shoulders. "Don't mind Tyra. She's just like that."

There's not much else to tell after that. She cooked dinner for us and gave me this journal. And she loaned me a bathrobe to wear as pajamas, and after I changed into it, put my clothes in to wash. Which brings us to now.

Well, Merida just told me that she finished making up that foldaway, so I should probably quit now and get some sleep. She's taking me shopping tomorrow.

As Merida says, "She's just like that."

 

A good tease is fun. Sometimes.

 

Eh, muses. They can be so....amusing.

 

And did the muses kiss you enough that you are inspired to write on? My own muse is not with me since almost 2 months now. I hope you fare better.

Shopping

Well, hello again. Reading over last night's entry, I'm thinking maybe I should have mentioned that Tyra left after dinner. Not that I'm one of those people who writes down every little detail of their day. Or maybe I am? I honestly don't know right now. Anyway, I don't plan to be. But on the other hand, how many interesting facts have been lost to history due to nobody writing them down because "what idiot wouldn't know that"? So maybe I should write down the little things I don't think are important, at least sometimes? Never mind. I'm rambling.

So anyway, we're going shopping today. I can't really say that I'm looking forward to it, beyond the practical concerns of getting a few changes of clothes and some other useful items. Speaking of clothes, I'm wearing yesterday's clothes again because they're the only ones I have right now. At least they're clean. I took a good look at them when I was getting dressed, and they appear to be well taken care of, but also well worn, which tells me that I probably wear this boring outfit a lot. (Boring? Why am I thinking of these clothes as boring? Why does it surprise me that I'm thinking they're boring?)

Also, I noticed that these pants don't have pockets. I should get some pants with pockets. And it looks like Merida is ready to go, so I should put this down for now.

 

LOL Love the comments about shopping and the "boring outfit". Definitely useful to have pockets.

 

I like the cool, casual tone of it. The way the arch of suspense is build.

 

Pockets are very useful. You can put stuff in them.

At this point I'm not deliberately trying to create suspense. And our dear narrator is just trying to be himself. (Even though currently he's not sure who himself actually is.)

Shopping, Part 2

Well, I'm back. This morning, for some reason, I had the idea that shopping would be boring or something. I was wrong. It was actually kind of fun.

As we were walking out the door, I felt the warm air and decided to leave the long sleeve over tunic and just wear the undershirt.

Merida looked at me sideways. "I know I'm not exactly a neat freak, but on the floor? Really?"

"I promise I'll pick it up when we get back."

"Okay."

Ironically, the most fun part of our shopping trip was picking out clothes. At first I didn't have the slightest idea what I wanted and found myself looking at things similar to what I already had. Then Merida held up a red shirt.

"How about this?"

"I'm not sure that's my style."

"Well, no duh, ya derp."

I was taken aback for a moment, but then thought about what I'd just said and had to laugh. She laughed too.

"Here's an idea, Ace. Quit thinking about it so hard. Just try on whatever catches your eye. If you like it, get it, if you don't, leave it."

I ended up getting considerably more clothes than I expected. I even got a couple of pairs of shoes - a pair of steel toed hiking/combat boots, and a pair of shiny black dress boots. I also got a couple more journals, and Merida talked me into getting a sketchbook and some basic art supplies. I don't know what gave her the idea that I can draw, though. I don't even know if I can draw. But it wouldn't hurt to try, I suppose.

 

Merida was encouraging and shopping turned out to be fun.

 

Apologies for the slight tardiness of this installment, but I literally didn't remember I needed to do it until the last day in the afternoon.

Making Friends

Well, hello again. It looks like I skipped a day of writing. Oh well, nothing much happened yesterday anyway. About the most interesting thing was when Merida burned a batch of cookies she was making because she got a call when they were almost done, and the call took longer than she thought it would. And meanwhile, I was taking out the garbage. The cookies weren't a complete disaster, though - just a little extra crispy. We ate them anyway. Oh, and I drew a picture. Nothing fancy, just some old diner. But considering that I didn't expect to be very good at drawing, it's actually not half bad. I also found out that I am in the town of Liánmin, on the planet Serenity.

So not much really happened yesterday. We just hung around the house. But today promises to be much more interesting, because we've been invited to some sort of a big beach party in Hoʻolaha, on Kolo'mai Island, out in the Melahiitian Archipelago, which is apparently pretty much on the other side of the planet.

 

Nice times - totally relaxing enjoying crispy cookies and a beach party.

 

Heh, heh, heh. This is going to be fun.

 

Our friend with amnesia is obviously on recreation, more or less willingly.

 

Well, sure. Just because he can't remember who he is right now doesn't mean he has to be all angsty all the time. Let the dude have some fun.

And are you still paying attention? Because I dropped another clue to our friend's identity in this one.
